Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
The snake-woman boss from Final Fantasy I was Marilith. Though it's entirely possible that we're thinking of different things.
And squid wizards are a Final Fantasy staple, because they're a D&D staple, and Final Fantasy basically just used D&D's bestiary.
And squid wizards are a Final Fantasy staple, because they're a D&D staple, and Final Fantasy basically just used D&D's bestiary.
- Boss Primer - Dark Elf:
HP: 23,890
Strength: 18
Magic: 1
Defense: 0
Magic Defense: 254
Weak: Holy (i.e. Cecil's palaswords - though the only one that TS could've found before now is his default palaweapon)As you saw in TS's update (and if you didn't what the hell are you doing you fool get your ass back up there), this boss has two forms. That HP is simply a nonsense number so that you don't kill him before he can change forms. Interestingly, though, in the DS version, his HP is exactly the same as the expanded damage cap... though you can only hit the expanded damage cap on a New Game+.Anyway, onto the fight. Whoever said he was weak to metallic weapons lied, because the Dark Elf is only weak to Cecil-exclusive swords. He casts Fira, Blizzara, and Thundara in one turn. Though this may sound threatening, his magic is shit and, due to how damage is calculated in FFIV, more pathetic because he dishes it out in one action. He can also cast Tornado, which is a very dangerous spell because it lowers your HP down to single-digits. Even his pathetic attacks will kill you then. His final trick is to Whisper you and turn you into a Pig. Being a pig is hilarious, but it lowers your attack power a smidge(?) and prevents most abilities from being used except for the commands you wouldn't want to use *cough*Analyze*cough* and Pig and Jump (for whatever reason). (And Esuna, but only outside of battle.) Thankfully, it can be reverted with the Pig spell, which costs a petty 1 MP.Also Pig even seals enemy-exclusive magic. And, in a rare act of kindness, allows you to finish executing the command you started. You may have noticed that Edward saves your ass (and if you didn't, read the update, goddammit, I already told you this). What happens if you don't visit Edward? Well...the Dark Elf Quakes your ass for 9999 damage. Quake deals non-elemental damage that misses floating targets, so you can't negate it (don't ask me how the game responds if you come in with Float on). You'll then see a Game Over screen, confused as to what you were supposed to do.- Boss Primer - Dark Dragon:
- HP: 3927Strength: 80Magic: 15Defense: 1Magic Defense: 254Weakness: Holy (still exclusive to My First Palasword)Easy way to finish the fight: Use Tornado. No, really. Tellah has it.His Dark Breath attack is Fire-elemental and, as TS observed, deals quite a bit of damage. If you don't want to use Tornado (in which case you will never use Tornado), it's mostly a regular battle (though you should cast Slow or Bio), though if you equipped Cecil with his palasword you should cast, like, Berserk on him or something. Heck, you should cast Berserk on Cid too. It ups their damage, and in Cid's case, what else would he do?

This is Lilith.
To my knowledge, she is actually a recurring monster character in the series and I like her a hell of a lot more than than Marilith :I

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
Oh. Ooooooooh.
Yeah, I can see that. Being not-red and only two-armed will do that, though if I remember correctly that's one of her more attractive appearances, beyond the FFIV line, obviously, and possibly Bravely Default.

I don't really care about coloration, I do care about number of arms and facial features.

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
- Part 17: Massive Breach of Protocol:
Alright so before I go to the Castle, I want to lighten my inventory a bit.
I'll ditch the 142 Holy Arrows of worthlessness and the Crossbow. I'll also dump 1 Decoy, 5 Herme's Shoes, 2 Bomb Fragments, 2 Rage of Zeus, 3 Antarctic Wind, 1 Clothes, and 1 Vampire Fang.
This gives me 10 free spots.
*heads straight for the Sisterly Queens*
*is surrounded on all sides by them*
*is uncomfortable*
"The Earth Crystal!"
"You've reclaimed it!"
"Hurrah!"
*Cecil spins about*
Cid: That voice!
Cecil: Kain!
Kain: Bring the Crystal and board the ship. I will take you to Rosa.
So what do they think now? Cat's kinda out of the bag now...
Going row by row, left to right.
"It seems you need our help. You may borrow the Crystal as promised."
"We are letting you borrow the Crystal. But be on your guard!"
"Feel free to take the items in the underground storeroom."
"What was that!?"
"What was that voice?"
"But we just got it back! ...I guess we have no choice. It's only a loan, though!"
"What is going on!?"
I'll head to Edward next.
Cecil: Thank you for help, Edward.
Edward: There is no need to thank me.
Cid: What I don't understand is how that worked...
Edward: I first heard that melody back when I traveled as a minstrel. I recall it being a son to remonstrate elves and I thought it might work...
Yang: We owe you our lives.
Edward: No, I only... Ugh...
Cecil: Edward!
Tellah: I have long wondered what Anna saw in you. But now I can see it myself. Courage, rising from integrity. She was fortunate to have your love.
Edward: ...
Tellah: Now be silent and heal your wounds. I promise you I shall avenge Anna for the both of us.
Edward: Thank you...
Me: Yay, Tellah has forgive Edward!
Cecil: Edward, I look forward to fighting alongside you again.
Edward: ...Anna, now I think I understand why you did what you did.
Yay! I have access to this room now!
OH WOW. Good grief, I hope there's at least one good item down here...
Going clockwise around... Hi-Potion, Remedy, Ether, Dry Ether, Elixir, Echo Herbs, Great Bow, Fire Arrow, Fire Arrow. Thunder Arrow, Ice Arrow, Ice Arrow, Echo Herbs, Silver Apple, Dry Ether, Ether, Remedy, Hi-Potion.
I don't really want to give up that Bow and those Arrows, just in case. So I'm gonna try and use a Chocobo to hold my items. Or at least I've been told this is possible.
*climbs aboard Enterprise*
Or maybe not.
Kain: Where is the Earth Crystal?
Cecil: Here. Where's Rosa?
Kain: In the tower of Zot. Follow me.
Cid: Come out!
Kain: Now now. First, Master Golbez would like a word.
Tellah: Golbez!
Golbez: Well done, Cecil. You have exceeded even my expectations.
Tellah: Wretch! Show yourself!
Golbez: Rosa stands besides me at the top of this tower. Briing the Crystal here, and we will make the trade.
Cecil: She had better be safe!
Golbez: You had best hurry. Or else something...unfortunate might happen to her.
Oh my god... Golbez must be crazy... Or maybe... Nah, I won't speculate for now.
*starts exploring and quickly finds Flame Mail*
It's armor resistant to Ice attacks. Hm... Only Cecil and Cid can equip it and it offers a cute little boost in defense. However it lower Cid's attack by one... I'll give it to Cid since gains more from it than Cecil.
Got pretty far without hitting any monsters. Hopefully they don't put up too much of a fight...
*Yang leveled*
I think that wasn't too bad.
*Tellah levels up and is badly injured*
So I've found up that returning to the blue things is the way out, but should I board Enterprise, I get sent back up here. Better than not being able to return I suppose.
Yang needs his Fire Claws. I'm now on Floor 2.
*Tellah is knocked out and Cid levels up*
Oh hello. Opened a chest and you pop out. At least you're not as threathening as three pissed off trolls.
*earns a Flame Sword for my painful trouble*
It boosts Cecil's attack to 78 so it's a keeper for sure.
*moves onto the third floor*
Lost track of what floor I'm on now... Oh well, I'll just keep pushing forward like a madman.
Alright so Floor Five has multiple enterances. At one of them I got the Gaia Hammer. Guess what I'm equipping to Cid. Boosts his attack to 80.
*finds a Hell claw in the chest in the next to the Gaia Hammer*
"Claw that sometimes posions enemy."
Hmm... I'll keep rolling with the Fire Claw for the moment.
*finds the Fire Shield*
It offers a slight increase in defense for Cecil, so why not.
And now my Inventory is full... Let's see what can I toss...
*Cecil levels up*
*finds Sage's Surplice and tosses a Mallet*
*equips to Tellah for a boost in Magicial Defense*
*also equips him with a Silver Armlet*
*Yang levels up*
Safe house! :D Of course you know what that means...
Oh boy...
My Trap Senses are tingling. No, not that kind of trap you filthy sexist sailors, the much more serious kind of trap.
My Trap Sense aren't just tingling now, they're screaming. I now expect at least one more opponent. Wouldn't be suprised to see four total.
And Barbariccia should be the fourth. I expect they'll show up behind me.
"Mindy!"
"Sandy!"
"Cindy!"
"We're afraid your jounrey is over. We will take youre Crystal. Say goodbye to your Rosa. Delta Attack!"
Interesting Harlem we have here. Now where to begin... How about with just a full on assault? I don't want to hold back and be seen as sexist now do I :P
Uh-oh. One of them just cast reflect on the middle one.
That was kinda pathetic actually. They used Fira on the middle one to bounce it. It hit Cecil and dealt only about 300 damage. And then I crushed Mindy. Now I'll target Sandy.
And down she goes. It feels like their combo just falls apart after you take just one of them out.
OH HOLY FUCK
No further problems were encountered. I just held Z and Space and did the equivliant of rapid button mashing and wailing. This time I just went after them in order of closest to furthest.
"Our Delta Attack failed!?"
Me: It was rather pathetic just using Fira and reflect...
"Nooo!"
*returns to the safe place to heal*
Me: Good Evening.
Tellah: Golbez!
Cecil: Where's Rosa!?
Golbez: First, the Crystal.
Cecil: She'd better be alright!
Golbez: Hand over the Crystal now or she dies.
Cecil: Here, take it!
*Handed over the Earth Crystal*
Cecil: There, now where's Rosa?
Golbez: Rosa? Whomever are you talking about?
Cecil: What!?
Golbez: You two-timing cur!
Tellah: Return her this minute!
Golbez: Ignorant dotard. Have you no idea whom you are dealing with?
Tellah: How could I ever forget the monster who killed my daughter!?
Fool...
That took him down by 1000 HP or so, but I doubt that was much.
*Tellah follows up with Firaga, dealing over 1700*
Golbez: Such feeble spells. A vain attempt at revenge.
*Tellah responds with Thundaga, dealing 2118*
*then Tellah uses Blizzaga, dealing 1836*
That should be the last of his magic reserves, unless he's actually using his life force now.
Tellah: I must cast Meteor now.
Cecil: No!
Yang: It will destroy you!
Tellah: I have no choice. Witness my final power.
IT DEALT 9999 DAMAGE.
Golbez: Impossible!
HE'S FALLING! And yet I don't believe this is the end...
Look at that. Kain is down and so is Tellah. I suspect an illusion.
Golbez: Ugh... How could he know Meteor...?
Cecil: Tellah!
Golbez: It matters not. The Crystal is mine. Kain!
Kain: ...
Golbez: So Meteor broke my spell over him. So be it. He no longer serves any purpose. Mark my words, Cecil. Someday, I will destroy you.
Cecil: !
Golbez: Impudent fool!
Cecil was just shot across the room by something. I thought it came from Golbez, but he seems surprised...
Cecil: Ugh... Why don't...you finish me...?
Golbez: You...
Cecil: ?
Golbez: What is going on? Ugh... Agggh!
Cecil: !?
Golbez: We will settle this the next times me meet!
*Golbez makes a hasty exit while Cecil gets to his feet*
Yang: Cecil!
Cid: Are you okay?
Cecil: Yeah... Meteor must have weakened him. Tellah! Are you okay!?
Tellah: ...I failed...
Cid: Keep still!
Tellah: I'm such a fool... I lost myself...in my own hatred. Avenge my daughter...for me... I beg of you...
*Tellah falls over*
Cecil: Tellah!
Yang: !
Tellah: ......
Cid: Get up, you old geezer!
Tellah: ...
Yang: Tellah...
Cid: ...I'll bet your daughter's mighty proud of you. You did good.
And that right there is why I refused to give him the Rod of Change. Tellah will be missed...
Cecil: Tellah, Anna... I swear on my life...we will avenge you!
*my remaining party regroups and I walk over to Kain*
Cecil: Kain! Kain!
Kain: Cecil... I... I'm so sorry... What have I done?
Cecil: Don't blame yourself. You had no control ove ryour actions.
Kain: But...a part of me inside was awake and yet, I just stood by and watched...
Cecil: ! Where's Rosa!
Kain: Beyond those doors! We must hurry!
*Cecil rushes forward and manages to pull Rosa away just in time before she was cleaved in two*
Cecil: Rosa...
Rosa: I knew you'd come.
*passionate kiss I don't give a damn about*
Cecil: I missed you so much... And I realized... I...
Rosa: Cecil...
Kain: ...
Cid: You realized what!? Be a man! Spit it out!
Rosa: Wait, is that Kain?
Cecil: He's okay now. Tellah's Meteor broke Golbez's spell.
Kain: But I was still aware. And yet... Rosa...I wanted to keep you close at any cost!
Rosa: Kain...
Kain: ...
Cecil: ...
Rosa: Let's fight together, Kain.
Kain: After all that I've done... It's too late.
Cecil: ...
Cid: Hey! Save the corny drama for later! We gotta scram!
Me: Now that's my kind of Hero. Running through the hallways as the tower begins to explode behind us.
Cecil: Let's go, Kain.
Kain: ...
Cecil: We need your help more than ever.
Kain: Cecil... Rosa... Thank you.
Yay... more baby sitting...

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
- Latest update spoilers:
- Tellah did actually convert his life force into MP for his last two spells. Two because he cast five spells - Bio, Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga, and Meteor. Bio costs 20 MP, the -aga spells cost 30 MP each, and Meteor costs 99 MP. Meaning he actually went 119 MP overboard - his cap is 90. Unless you gave him a Soma Drop...but I'm not sure if you can find those yet.
Also I wouldn't call it baby-sitting because that would imply Rosa and Kain can't take care of themselves. Hell, Rosa will be keeping you alive. Much better than Tellah, even.
- Boss Primer - Magus Sisters:
(Stats are, in order, Sandy/Cindy/Mindy. Which is, incidentally, the order they appear above.)
HP: 2591/4599/2590
Strength: 30/36/36
Magic: 11/11/10
Defense: 1/2/1
Magic Defense: 11/11/0
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm like 90% certain these are the lowest magic defenses we've seen on bosses. This includes the first one.
Anyway, the Magus Sisters use a strategy known as the Delta Attack. Sandy will cast Reflect on Cindy, who will use a physical attack on one of your party members. Mindy will then cast a spell (a -ra spell or Bio) on Cindy; due to Reflect, it bounces onto your party. If you want Tellah to remain relevant, you need to Reflect spells of your own. Thankfully, you don't have to waste MP on Reflect itself; Sandy's a bit...slow, and will cast Reflect on a Reflected Cindy, bouncing that onto a party member. It is a bit of a problem because you can't choose what a reflected spell hits, but what'choo gonna do?
It's recommended you ax Cindy first; as seen in the update, killing her sisters before her results in her casting Arise on her fallen allies. Which can be exploited for more EXP, granted.
Also you can use Tornado, but Tornado can be reflected and costs quite a bit of Tellah's still-90 MP.

- Reply, which includes spoilers for the next part:
- I figured Kain would be stronger due to Goblez's tutelage and wasn't really concerned about that. I was expecting Rosa to be the biggest liability seeing how she's been strapped to a wall for rather long time now. Then right before I shut the game down, I checked the stat page for the heck of it and found what level she's really at. My party concerns and what not will be addressed in the beginning of the next part. I just wanted this one out there.

- Game Mechanics Spoilers and Whatnot Relating to the Next Part:
- After you meet a party member (read: they get a slot in your party), even if they leave the party, EXP Cecil gains is given to them. Kain would be a little bit better in EXP, of course, because you met him earlier.

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
- Part 18: Fateful Encounter:
So at the end of the last part I thought I would be baby sitting Rosa because I logicially assumed that her level had not changed since her capture at Fadul. However this turns out not to be the case.
So someone needs to explain to me how she's level 29. Kain's level is reasonable considering that he was raised by Golbez.
Kain right now is holding Mythril Shield, Wind Spear, Mythril Helm, Mythril Armor, Mythril Gloves and has 69 attack, 43 defense, and 10 special defense.
Rosa's equipment on the other hand.... well maybe she'll be a bit of a pain after all. All she's wearing is Prisoners' Wear. I'm giving her the Great Bow I picked up and 20 Ice Arrows picked up earlier. Armor wise I'm giving her the Twist Headband, Kenpogi, Silver Armlet. Her stats are now 38 attack, 19 defense, and 7 special defense.
Of course I wouldn't be able to just stroll out.
"It seems Master Golbez has underestimated you."
Kain: The Lord of Wind, Barbariccia!
Barbariccia: You disappoint me, Kain. Submitting to a weak imbecile, despite all your powers.
Kain: I've simply come to my senses. I've grown sick of siding with animals like you!
Me: Animals sounds too kind for what I suspect we're about to see...
Barbariccia: You snotty little wretch. I'll enjoy killing you all! With the old man and his Meteor gone, you stand no chance.
Kain: Let's see about that.
Oh my..... I was not expecting a human form. So will she mutiate?
Been a while since the active time battle thingy became revelant. So it looks like arrows and Kain are able to do much.
Correction, when she goes into that form, I can't do a fucking thing aside from keep wailing because Kain and Rosa can't hit the broad side of a barn.
So in the end just waiting for her to drop her guard was the better solution.
*Cid levels up*
I'm not really concerned, so far it seems like they get easier with each successive fight.
"Regardless, you'll never leave here alive!"
*the tower begins shaking*
"Hahahaha!"
Cecil: It's collapsing!
Kain: Dammit!
Cid: That bastard!
Me: *yawn*
Rosa: Hold on to me! Teleport!
Rosa: Yes, it's your room in Baron.
Cid: Now that we've taken care of the fake kin, there's nothing to worry about.
Kain: Cecil, there is something I must tell you...
*Cid jumps into a chair*
Cid: What is it?
Kain: It's about the Crystals.
Cecil: Well, we're lost Troia's Earth Crystal to Golbez, which means he now holds all the Crystals.
Kain: Not quite. He only has four.
Rosa: You mean there are more?
Cid: Of course! So the legends are true after all!
Kain: Yes... The Dark Crystals.
Cid: Alright, listen up. The Crystals of this world are called "Light Crystals." That means there's a whole other set of...
Cecil: ...Dark Crystals?
Kain: Exactly. So you see, he only has half of the Crystals.
Cid: Well, we now know they exist, but how would we go about finding them?
Kain: They lie under the surface of the earth...in the underworld.
Cid: Underground? Are you sure about this?
Kain: That is what I overheard Golbez say. He also said that when all of the Crystals of light and darkness are gathered, the path of the moon will open.
Cecil:[b] A path to the moon?
[b]Kain: I'm not sure exactly what it is, but this is the key for unlocking it. Here, you keep it.
*obtained Magma Rock*
Why would Kain have that? Alarm bells are screaming in my head.
Cecil: So this is the key...
Kain: This is to be used...somewhere, to open a path to the underworld.
Yang: But where?
Rosa: Yes, where do we use it?
Kain: I wish I knew...
Me: I have a couple of likely places.
Cid: Ah, no worries! We'll just fly aorund the world on the Enterprise till we find something.
Cecil: But we lost the airship near the Tower of Zot.
Cid: Pshaw! My baby's equiped with auto-pilot. I'll bet she's flown back already.
Rosa: Cid, what would we do without you?
Cid: Heh heh. Alright, we leave tomorrow morning. Let's rest up for our journey to the underworld!
Cecil: I still don't understand. Why didn't Golbez finish me off at the tower?
Rosa: Cecil?
Cecil: Oh, I was just thinking aloud. Come on, let's get some rest.
*the next morning*
I'll try and lighten my backpack a bit. Let's see... I'll sell off the Vampire Fang, and a Staff. Now I can't sell off the Sword of Legend, but now it's just taking up space. So I'm going to try and give it and a couple of other equips to a Fat Chocobo.
This is harder than I thought. It won't let me select the greens...
Spoke too soon...
SON OF...
*finds to my disappointment that I can't deposit the sword*
At least I can drop the shield... Also giving him the Wooden Hammer, the Rod of Change, and the Gold Hairpin.
On my out, I noticed I am carrying a Silver Apple. This item increases maximum HP by 50 points. I will be leaving this item here as well.
And now I will be leaving Chocobo Woods to stock up on Arrows.
As I get ready to land in Mysida, I remembered the ghost of the King. I don't quite remember what he wanted me to do before he would help me, but I wonder if it's connected to what I need to do.
And unfortunately... Holy Arrows aren't quite as good as I hoped... Oh well... To the King's chamber!
Cecil: Your Majesty!?
King: Venture to the Land of Summons before you return. I shall help you then.
Cecil: Yes, Your Majesty.
Alright then... Onto my list of likely places, starting with that one castle...
On my way there, I discovered this island. It doesn't look like one I've seen before.
*enters town and finds this is Agart*
I'm pretty sure I've never been here before.
"This is Agart. The people here all share the same lineage. Our ancestors were dwarves."
"Behind this door lies a sacred well that has been here for generations. It's depth remains unknown."
That seems promising...
I now have a choice of using items... including the Magma Rock... Hm...
What are the odds...
WOAH.... It seems I did find where I needed to go...
*hurries to talk to the rest of the citizens*
"According to a famous saying, there are two sides to everything. Even to this world..."
"The other day, I saw a reddish mass get swallowed into the northern crater!"
"Supposedly, our ancestors came from the world. Their world also has a sun, which is called Magma."
"It's so peaceful here in Agart, though we do have earthquakes at times."
"There is an ancient saying: 'Only when the sun's stone is returned will the path to the native land emerge."
"My grandma is the oldest person in the village. She knows everything!"
"Without darkness, light cannot exist. There is day and there is night. These are the laws of nature. These are the words of our ancestors."
"I hear our ancestors came from the mountain to the North, out of the crater, which is sealed now. I don't suppose it matters because you need an airship to get there anyway."
"Supposedly, our ancestors came from the other world. Their world also has a sun, called Magma."
"I'm strong! My grandpa's grandpa's grandpa's grandpa was really strong, too!"
Oh my god... I'm having a bit of a hard time believing I just happened to find where I needed to go. I was going to head over to that big creepy tower and explore around there...
*finds the armor and weapons shops*
Armor shop offers Iron Gear. Cid apparently benefits from an Iron Shield, Iron Helm, and Iron Gloves. Yang apparently benefits from an Iron Ring so why not equip them?
*is reminded the hard way that Cid can't equip a shield and a hammer*
Also replacing the Feather Cap with an Iron Helm actually only boosts defense by one and reduces magicial defense by three... So I'll keep the cap.
Next door at the armor shop is a selection of bows and arrows, poles to either stab people with or cast magic with, and a boomerang. I'm buying none of that.
"What? You wanna know how our ancestors came here? Well, it's a funny story... Um... Darn, I seem to have forgotten the tale..."
"Maybe I'm short because my ancestors were dwares. I wish my ancestors were ogres. Then I would've been really tall!"
"We cannot live without the blessing of the sun, although our ancestors might disagree."
"My husband is a real swot. He even forgets to eat when he's in the observatory."
"Welcome to Corio's Observatory. We possess perhaps the best telescope in the world. We've recently noticed some anomalous activity on the moon."
"I'm Corio. I study the two moons, one of them has been showing some strange activity of late. One moon has no sign of life or activity. But the other has traces of life, and is turning a reddish color... A color similar to that of blood... I can't escape from this sense of foreboding..."
So there's one moon, presumably the "healthy moon"
And it won't show me the other moon... But anyway, that is strange...
Oh my god... I don't wanna go down that hole... But I have no other choice...
WHAT ARE YOU DOING FLYING AWAY!!!!!
Cecil: !?
Kain: The Red Wings!
Wait, what...
HOLY SHIT. CID WHY ARE WE FLYING STRAIGHT THROUGH NO MAN'S LAND!!!!
Yang: They must have beaten us here.
Cecil: Who are they fighting?
Cid: I'm gonna bust through the line! Hang on!
*panicked screaming as Enterprise takes hits from both sides*
Cid: She won't hold together!
Cecil: We're going down!
*screen fades to black*
Rosa: Cecil!
Cecil: Is everyone alright?
Cid: Yeah... But my ship... We have to land. It's too risky in this condition.
Cecil: We have no choice. Let's take her down.
Why Cid... Why...

Unless you mean in-story, in which case I have no idea.Lief Katano wrote:

After you meet a party member (read: they get a slot in your party), even if they leave the party, EXP Cecil gains is given to them. Kain would be a little bit better in EXP, of course, because you met him earlier.
Also: it's still spelled Fabul.

Reason #1 that the "Kain betrayed the party of his own free will" theory is total bullshit is because he would've known that Barb was here and wouldn't have joined up because defeat would be inevitable. Well, apparently not inevitable, because TS (seemed to have?) managed to beat her even without forcing her out of tornahair form. Just really, really difficult.
Anyway, while in her tornahair form:
she's pretty (really) evasive and counters attack with Maelstorm (critical HP to all party members, though it can miss). What are you going to do? Well, Mysterious Narrator (Kain?) says that only jump attacks will connect. What TS thought of...wasn't entirely incorrect, because spears and bow attacks share an elemental property known as Throw, which is the bane of flying enemies and provides their immunity to earth-based non-elemental attacks. But if you don't want to drag out the fight, you should...er, you know what Kain's special command is? I made a character primer for him, if you don't know go look at that. I'll wait.
...
So, you're supposed to use the only attack that can connect to force Barb out of her tornahair form. And only jump attacks connect.
It's particularly cruel because in the short scene she appears, Barb seems to have some feelings for Kain. Y'know, whatwith being peoplethings that feel at home in the sky. This makes Cid feel lonely.
Anyways, Barb has some other attacks. In one picture, you may have seen Cecil kneeled over, even though he wasn't at critical HP. Her other Ability Of Note is Ray. This causes Gradual Petrification, which, after a certain amount of time has passed, makes you pretty much dead. However, your HP remains the same as when you were petrified, and you can be un-petrified with Esuna or a Gold Needle. Heck, you can stop Gradual Petrification with a Golden Needle, too (and probably Esuna). It can't be inflicted by the player: you just get Petrification. Which is way more useful, I'm just saying.

She shifted out of it on her own. Twice I think.Lief Katano wrote:Well, apparently not inevitable, because TS (seemed to have?) managed to beat her even without forcing her out of tornahair form. Just really, really difficult.
I call bullshit. First is because Kain has terrible aim, he missed twice in a row with his special. Second account is that the rest of the party was still dealing damage, though it was reduced. So, you're supposed to use the only attack that can connect to force Barb out of her tornahair form. And only jump attacks connect.

I believe it's because you have them in the back. Only long range weapons (like bows and arrows) work from the back line.
...At least, I think that's how it goes.
