Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
- Part 4: A quest begins, supposedly:
Do I get a choice?
Cecil: Always.
Kain: Lead the way.
Apparently not :I
*the pair exit the castle side by side*
That's a pretty landscape.
*text begins to scroll and replicates this the best I can*
If you didn't see three seperate blocks of text, look again.
I wonder if I will get a proper fighting tutorial now. Also that silently shed their light thing...
Mini map time? Can I move about like this or is it scripted?
So I can move over one space to the left and walk to the castle, I can mess about in
Like in the castle, if I find stuff or have an interesting/important coversation, I'll note it.
Okay so the first building I went in looks important.
*just realized that I have not yet attempted calling up the game's menu*
*hits backspace first, then enter*
I believe this is that party thing Lief tried to talk about, but I merely brushed off because going completely blind makes the game more enjoyable for me.
*discovers that the Tent I picked up in the last part restores both HP and MP*
This could be very useful on my trip.
*discovers that Cecil and Kain cannot use magic*
I feel that could be a problem. Maybe I can find a spell book around here somewhere.
*browses through equipment and status*
So many numbers... I didn't want to post them, but I feel it'll help the rest of you guys understand Lief if I do so...
So the interesting piece of trivia here is that Cecil is right handed while Kain is left handed.
Also the only two stats I don't quite understand are Intellect and Spirit. Both Kain and Cecil have the same Intellect, while Kain has much more Spirit.
And no Lief, you're not allowed to tell me :I
And now back to the adventure. The lady in the shop is telling me I should bring Potions, Antidotes, and Tents. Potions are 30 Gil while Antidotes are 40. Both do what they do in Pokémon. The fact tents are listed for 100 each concerns me somewhat. I think that means they either have a limit lifespan or only useable once.
For the moment, I'll keep this in the back of mind while I explore the rest of Baron. I'll come back later.
*found a potion in an urn*
Maybe I'll get all the supplies I need just by looking around.
*finds the Inn*
So I'm guessing I can sleep at these to recover. Also the people in the Inn have mixed reactions to me. The bartender doesn't charge me, but a patron and young girl fear me...
Secret Room Found :D
Found
*Dwarven Bread
*Tent - These must be disposable then...
*Eye Drops
*also finds a potion in another urn*
In another building, I apparently can change my name. But I don't really have a desire to thus far... In the same battle I learn that in order to flee from battle, I must hold the L and R buttons. Only I don't know where those buttons are tied on my keyboard. And also pressing the left arrow can allow me to target multiple targets with spells, but that bit isn't helpful.
*learns a little bit more combat information in the same room, then leaves*
*finds another potion*
[img 35]Oh this is Cid's house. Hmm... To wake him up or not to walk him up...
*decides to wake him up*
Apparently I can't...
*finishes exploring and takes stock of what I have*
I have 3 potions now. I doubt that'll do, but it's better than nothing. I'll pick up two antidotes, then continue on my way.

You're a jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaackaaaaaaaaaass for not letting me help you
But I'm going to say right now that you get all of your spells from level up and Kain and Cecil don't learn any.

Those were items. Attack items, to be precise - Fang items do elemental damage equal to half of the user's HP.

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
- Part 5, Leaving Baron For Sure:
I suppose I head west now and see what happens.
Shit, no tutorial, no nothing, and my options don't seem to be configured properly :gunk: I thought I had it set that the monsters wouldn't continously attack me...
*mashes A to select attack and whatever options appear first*
What, wow. They both went down in a single hit. That was easier than starting out in Pokémon, I think.
Apparently due west is a no go. I'll try going south.
So south quickly dead ended and I decided to try the moutains when these assholes appeared. Again they all went down in one hit a piece and dropped 15 gil.
Okay the mouatains are impassable. I have no choice but to backtrack to Baron.
And be attacked in the process.
*is soon attacked by Golbins again*
I've found that the way my settings are right now seem to protect me from harm because if I mash the buttons fast enough, I can kill them before they kill me.
So this way, Due South of Baron, is an option.
...Nevermind.
*heads to the North and gets attacked by goblins again*
So I just beat some floating eyeball things and I apparently got an alarm clock. What the fuck does that do?
"Timepiece that releases all allies from Sleep"
I suppose that's reasonable, but it just feels weird to have that in the game.
I can go left or right... Something tells me that one will deadend.
*picks left*
Apparently the Goblins aren't happy with how I've been slaughtering their comrades so they brought the metaphorical dog with them. Pity they all died.
Also Cecil gained a level.
Well this looks like I'm going the right way.
This seems like the correct way alright. Now as to if this is my denstination or not, I don't know.
ARGGH, THEY'VE SOMEHOW MANAGED TO ESCAPE THE GATES OF HELL
*proceeds to send them back to Hell along with the reinforcements*
What said that...
Cecil:] What? Who's there!?
*proceeds with caution*
And of course I run right into some Goblins, but I looted their tent so who cares! :huzzah:
And speaking of looting!
I found a treasure chest :D
And inside is... ...a potion...
*accidently steps on that same spot as before and triggers the same sequence of events, but facing in the opposite direction*
Whut. Guessing that's a bit of a bug in the actual game.
*finds three more chests with Eye Drops, a Tent, and a Potion*
I'm sorry Oh Mighty Thing That Talks In English, but Lief would never allow me to turn back and live it down!
[b]Kain:[b] Could that be the Beast of Mist Valley?
*walks a little bit further*
[b]Oh Mighty Thing That Talks In English: KNIGHTS OF BARON.
Kain: Who are you!?
Oh Mighty Thing That Talks In English: LEAVE NOW, OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES.
Kain: Show yourself!
Oh Mighty Thing That Talks In English: YOU CHOOSE TO IGNORE MY WARNINGS?
*is given a choice of yes or no*
*elects to hit no just to see what happens*
And Cecil just walks back...
*hits yes*
Cecil: We have to get to Mist! We're not turning back.
Oh Mighty Thing That Talks In English: SO BE IT.
[B]Kain:[b] The mist is gathering!
Wait, what!?!
HOLY FUCK
*mashes A for while, then the dragon turns to mist*
Bastard...
*notices something called Dark for Cecil*
*tries it*
*finds that it was really cool and completely useless on the dragon because of the mist ability*
*finds that Jump for Kain does a powerful attack for 60 damage*
*spams that*
That second jump dealt out 186 damage. I'm now cringing.
Also Kain leveled up from that.
*exits the cave through a opening just ahead and after a short walk*
I believe we've arrived at our destination and the end of this part.

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
I'd recommend not looking up any more party member artwork due to Spoilers.
Anyway! I was kind of hoping that TS would explain the boss, at least in a simple way. He kinda failed to do that, thoughas I expected so I'm now going to make a Battle Primer for the Mist Dragon! It's like a character primer but for a boss. Also included in this post is a tutorial for the Active Time Battle that TS wants to know about so badly. Also stats so I can vent.
Anyway! I was kind of hoping that TS would explain the boss, at least in a simple way. He kinda failed to do that, though
- Battle Primer - Mist Dragon:
HP: 465
Strength: 16
Magic: 10
Defense: 5
Magic Defense: 31 (not that it matters unless you hack a spellcaster into your party)
EXP: 700
Gil: 200
With the advent of the Active Time Battle came the need to know how to use it. Enter the Mist Dragon. She (we are going to refer to her as a girl now) isn't too complicated, as with all ATB Tutorial bosses. She attacks for a fairly low amount of damage, usually. Once she takes enough damage, though (or maybe after a certain amount of time, I dunno) she dissolves into mist. Y'know, more misty then she is now. When she's in this state, no attacks whatsoever will harm her. Trying to do so will have her counter with Cold Mist, which, unlike a similar boss from Final Fantasy IV, can kill you with ease. The solution, therefore, is simple - blast her with attacks while she's in her dragon form, and don't do anything while she's mist (although complicating it slightly is Kain's Jumps). All of your problems will eventually fade like the mist.
- ATB/Stats (later on) tutorial:
- ==\ACTIVE TIME BATTLE/==TUTORIAL
Almost all battles start thusly: you're on the right, and your foes are on the left.
When a combatant's ATB gauge is full, they can move. The ATB gauge is filled quicker the more Agility you have.
Enemies are always on the attack, seeking to end your life. (Though not always being effective at it.)
Shifting the Battle Mode to Wait remedies this a bit. Enemies will always be able to attack you if only your command window is up. Using the "Wait" Battle Mode simply allows you to take a breather whenever your spell/item menu is up or you're targeting something, though this also halts the flow of time for your allies. Battle speed, however, only affects your enemies (I think).
Out of all commands, only Attack and Item execute instantly (and item is only if you aren't using an item that casts a spell (i.e. using a potion executes instantly). The rest require a small/comparatively large amount of time to execute, known as Charge Time. If TV Tropes is correct, using an ability enough times lowers the Charge Time for it, though I wouldn't wager it being a noticeable bonus unless you constantly time how long an ability takes to execute.
If you flee (L+R; A+S using Vizzed's default keys), you usually lose some gil. The amount lost is equal to 25% of how much you would have won if you kept on fighting. (Abilities that force a flee - that we won't run in for a long time, or maybe sooner - never have you lose gil).
There's three variations on how a normal battle starts - a Preemptive Strike!, Ambush! or Back Attack!. Getting a preemptive strike makes your party's ATB gauge full and the enemies' empty, while an ambush and back attack make the party's empty and the enemy's full. Why are there two types of battles that do the same thing? Back attacks also reverse rows. From this:
to this:
Unlike other Final Fantasy games, IV makes you have a 3-front and 2-back configuration, or a 3-back 2-front configuration. What do each of these rows do?
Being in the front row means that all of the damage you take and deal is at 100%. Being in the back row means that your damage is halved, unless using a ranged weapon or magic. The same also applies to you, though, so yay!
Now I'm going to go into stats a bit, so if for whatever odd reason you don't want to know what the stats do, leave now or forever hold your peace.
Staying? Good.- Long Version:
Here we see Cecil's stats. The missing HP is due to Dark (Darkness). Also as a note, if for whatever reason you want to equip someone with a bow (bows suck) you want to equip in in their non-primary hand. (i.e. if Cecil could equip bows the bow would go in the left hand and the arrows (yes you have to keep up stock on arrows) would go in the right; why they made it function like this is beyond me).- Strength increases physical power; I can't remember off-hand if it goes beyond boosting Attack or not. Every four points of Strength enhances Attack by one point, and every eight points of strength raises Attack multipliers, the number between the Attack and the 15. Both make you hurt stuff more (Attack Rate is like the number of hits).
- Agility speeds up the rate that the ATB gauge fills. It also affects all multipliers: every eight agility gives one Defense multiplier (which helps you soak up damage I'd imagine), every 16 agility gives you one Attack multiplier, and every thirty-two agility gives one magic defense multiplier (which, again, helps reduce damage).
- Stamina increases defense by one every two points. (So if Cecil lacked armor, he'd have 5 defense.)
- Intellect raises black magic damage directly, while spirit increases white magic potency directly. Both are combined to give these bonuses: every 8 points gives 1 magic evade point, while every 32 give one magic defense multiplier.
Also, every 4 levels gives an attack point and an attack multiplier, while every 16 gives a defense multiplier if you have a shield equipped.
Also of note! Evade is related to how much stuff you're wearing and how much evade your shield has. Each character starts with 30% evade and it can only get worse from there. (Or better, but usually it's for the worse.)- Strength increases physical power; I can't remember off-hand if it goes beyond boosting Attack or not. Every four points of Strength enhances Attack by one point, and every eight points of strength raises Attack multipliers, the number between the Attack and the 15. Both make you hurt stuff more (Attack Rate is like the number of hits).
- Short Version:
Strength helps you hurt stuff more.
Agility makes you quicker, hurt less, and hurt stuff more.
Stamina makes you hurt less and that's it.
Intellect raises black magic damage and magic defenses.
Spirit raises white magic potency and helps Intellect raise magic defenses.
Evade can only be raised by shields and will usually be bogged down by heavy armor.
Leveling up also raises hurting stuff ability and, if you have a shield, not getting hurt ability.

- Part 6: I'll Figure Something Out:
So last time I beat a misty sponge dragon thing and now I'm in this place. Might as well take a look around.
Or not... And what ring?
*seizure inducing flashing*
OH MY FUCKING GOD, THOSE DO NOT LOOK FRIENDLY
They don't seem to be sticking around, not that's a good thing either.
*screen fades to black and red*
Oh my god... oh my god... THEY AREN'T LEAVING
*has a horrifying thought*
No... Please don't tell me my mission was is actually to slay the village guardian and destroy the village...
Cecil: ...This is it? This is why he sent us here!?
Kain: We've destroyed the entire village...
*Cecil walks forward a few paces*
Cecil: Why would he make us do this?
Unidentified Person: Nooo! Mommy!
Cecil: !?
*both Kain and Cecil rush to the source of the voice*
Looks like I nailed it right on the head... too late of course... But at least I realized it when the main characters did so I'm at least as smart as they are.
This is dark... So since the game is already this unfriendly to young people, I ain't got a problem with stepping it up a notch with my language.
Cecil: What!?
Kain: I've heard of people with the power to summon monsters... Summoners, they are called.
Cecil: Then we are the ones responsible for killing her mother by killing the dragon.
Girl: YOU killed my mom's dragon!?
Me: How are we gonna explain this one?
Cecil: We... we didn't know that would happen...
Me: That is the lamest explanation ever...
Kain: So that was the king's wish... to annihilate every summoner in this village.
Cecil: That can't be...
Me: Got another reason to explain this then? Seems like the King is soiling our reputations while securing his position of power. Corruption is such an interesting thing. I don't think he's following the Evil Overload Handbook though.
Kain: I'm afraid it's true. I'm afraid we're going to have to get rid of the girl.
Me: ...I'll end this Let's Play here and now if we do...
Cecil: WHAT!?
Me: Yay! Cecil still has reason!
Kain: We have to obey the king's orders.
Me: I can't help but agree that it'll probably restore our good standing with the King, but my heart isn't in this plan because the girl doesn't deserve to die. I would much rather kill the King now instead of this girl and that is why I'm Chaotic Good. Also I don't recall my orders explicitly stating I had to level the village and leave no survivors.
Cecil: But she's just a child!
Me: I'll admit, youthfulness has never stopped me from killing before.
Kain: You intend to defy the king?
Me: Yes, and I'll start by killing you if I can.
Cecil: I refuse to continue any more slaughter in the king's name!
Me: Excellent, I won't have to go looking for a new player character.
Kain: ...I knew you'd say that. But don't worry, I'm on your side.
Cecil: You are?
Me: I have a serious disliking of Kain right now. More enough to permanently dispose of him in the blood stained remains of this village :I And it pleases me that Cecil shares at least part of my mistrust.
Kain: I owe the king so much, but I can't disgrace the dragoons.
Cecil: So you'll join me?
Kain: Yes. But we will need allies if we are to oppose the mightiest kingdom in the land. We have to do it for Rosa, as well.
Me: I propose we start by recruiting that girl there. And who's Rosa again? I've got so much to keep track of nowadays that I forget stuff like this.
Cecil: Thank you, Kain.
Kain: Save it. This isn't for your sake.
Cecil: ...
Me: Lief! Please tell me I can ditch this bastard at some point.
Kain: This place is dangerous. We'd better get going. What about the girl?
Cecil: We can't leave her. We'll have to take her with us.
Cecil: It's alright. We won't hurt you. You're going to have to come with us, okay?
Me: She'll probably won't want to come with us... and how can I blame her?
Girl: No!
Kain: Come on! We have to go now!
Girl: No! Go away!
Cecil: Wait!
Girl: I hate you! You killed my mom!
Oh my god... Well... I can't exactly blame her for wanting to avenge her mother. Since she's now my enemy, I won't hold back and will give her a warrior's honorable death.
OWWWWWW
I apparently took too long... Or this battle is scripted. I bet it's scripted.
*goes back to my last save point to double check*
*is somewhat peeved that I didn't even get off a single hit*
Double OWWW for the explosions that go on for a minute.
Also the battle seems scripted, or at least the odds are heavily tipped in her favor. I got in three hits on her for about 33 HP each. Interestingly, when you attack in this instance, it automatically aims for the girl, not the Titan she summons. I like that because I've long been fond of attacking the summoner, not the powerful monsters they summon, on the grounds it gets rid of the monsters as soon as the summoner dies.
Nothing more awkward than waking up in the middle of a forest, alone (apart from the guy who random emerges and fuses with your body) with a girl of unknown age.
Great, so I'm gonna have to clear my name of Mass Murder, Mass Destruction, Murder, Kidnapping, and Rape. Possibly Gang Rape.
I'm kind of curious how you can tell that just by looking at her. She may have serious internal injuries from those explosions. Not that I could really do anything to heal her considering I don't have any healing magic.
Cecil: Kain? Kain!? Kain? Kain!?
Cecil: I have to get her out of here. Kain, I pray that you're alive!
*Cecil picks up the girl and heads out of the clearing in the forest*
Okay so I can't backtrack because the valley has been filled in by a landslide. Proceeding into the unknown is pretty much the only option. With a girl slung over my shoulder. I've actually never imagined a scenario where I was stuck with an unconscious girl and had to carry her into worlds unknown without a vehicle.
Maybe she's part of my party.
Well apparently not. Still awkward. Happy that Kain is gone though. That should take care of any gang rape charges.
*ventures North into a desert*
Maybe I'm not so happy about it after all...
*manages to survive the battle with only some minor damage*
Minor damage will eventually stack...
*gains a level and gets poisoned*
We may have a problem. I should've bought more than two antidotes.
*decides to go without healing up*
So after hiking a long ways through a desert carrying an unconscious girl, I have found way out. Not the most pleasant thing I've had to do.
So there must be other ones like this. Funny how it says South when I've been heading North.
This game is weird. Because I'm poisoned, I'm wearing shades. And then I get turned into a toad by that thing, which drastically reduces my attacking and puts the shades in mid-air above my head.
So apparently at once point I can start swimming? In any case, the left treasure chest has a potion while the right one has a Maiden's Kiss. I'm pretty sure said kiss is not from the girl I'm carrying.
*finds that it cures Toad status*
That sounds quite helpful.
I'll go ahead use the potion.
*gains a level from defeating three killer fish*
*unrefined screenshot <.< >.>*
So I just noticed Cecil's Dark Attack lowers his health. This is gonna be a long, slow, agonizing grind to the end of this cave...
So apparently the reason Poison didn't seem to be hurting me is because I never had poison. I had darkness status.
On with my journey!
*finds a tent*
I don't know why I'm so surprised to see zombies...
*attacks and discovers they resist nearly all of the damage I deal*
Fucking Shit. I'm only dealing one HP per normal attack and only 6-15 for my special. If there's a run option, I haven't found it yet.
*a while later*
I got one
*a second goes down in a critical hit*
Thank god... Still got two more...
*gets another in a Dark attack*
DIE YOU LAST MOTHER FUCKER
FINALLY I GOT RID OF THOSE BASTARDS
ALSO OLD DUDE ALERT!
[
So I noticed :I
Old Man: Return to Kaipo! Scoot!
SERIOUSLY YOU OLD FUCKING BASTARD?
*has a thought*
Maybe there's another passage from the desert somewhere.
*heads outside and elects to use a tent to recover from my injuries*
I solemnly swear that I didn't do anything to that girl in the night.
Next time, slogging through the scorching desert with a girl whom may or may not still be unconscious, again!

Rosa is Cecil's girlfriend, and the battle is scripted, as you probably figured out.
Also I'd recommend finding a town. And zombies, being creatures of the dark, aren't really affected too much by Cecil's Dark Knight attacks.

It's in this part of the desert. Like, you don't have to go to another part of the world map.

If I remember correctly, going to where you entered the desert and going straight up will bring you towards your destination.
