Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
Is it bad that I'm enjoying TS' play-through of FFIV more than I would if Lief was playing it? Mainly because it's more amusing to watch someone stumble blindly than to watch a seasoned veteran kill everything.
I think Undertaker's rubbing off on me.

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
*had no idea that you guys were posting stuff while I was making this*
So what if he rubbing off on you, he's a funny guy.
- Part 7: Give me a damn landmark and I'll get you there:
So now I have to find my way to a town somewhere in this area. Where? I don't know. Resources are gonna be tight... Wouldn't surprise me if I ran out. What would happen then? Well I don't really want to think about that...
So off I go to the east while hugging the mountains.
Uhh... Southwest!
*levels up on the way*
Wow. By some micrale, I've ended up right where I started. This desert must not be as huge as I thought. Due North then.
...This looks nothing like a village. *curses Lief's name as I go east for a bit, then turning to the southeast due to the mountains while still cursing Lief*
Hmm? I don't recall seeing this before...
SALVATION!!!
Ahhh, this is what that old man was referring to. Time to plunder.
If I've learned anything from TVTropes over the past few days, this is an Inn Tutorial. And Inns heal everything.
*Cecil, on his own accord, finds the Town's Inn*
Inn Keeper: ...Oh! She looks very pale. Is she alright? Get her to a bed, quickly! She can rest here, free of charge.
Cecil: Thank you.
Me: That's nice she gets to sleep here for free, but um how much will it cost me for me to stay and rest? And please, I want a seperate room.
....This looks more like a community bunkhouse. And I should know because I've built a large portion of one. And renovated it too. Several times. For some reason, it's more lavish than my other works.
*the girl rolls over, apparently at least semiconscious*
Cecil: Hey. Are you alright?
Girl: ...
Me: You've just hauled her away from the devastated remains of her village and her mother's corpse, over miles of desert, into and out of a cave while barely making it out with your own life, and through some town she's likely never been to before and put her in a bed. Why the fuck would she be alright? Severe emotional distress aside, the poor thing is most likely dehydrated. And hungry.
Cecil: My name is Cecil. What's yours?
Girl: ...
Cecil: I'm sorry about your mother. I understand if you can't forgive me. Will you at least let me protect you?
Me: What would Rosa say? Pretty sure it wouldn't be nice...
Girl: ...
Creepy.
....................................................................
Time skip!
*a bang at the door*
Or not...
Uh oh... Well if you choose to go against the king, you've gotta be ready to fight against his forces. Cause reasoning is already out of the question. Bring it!
Girl: !
Cecil: Wait!
General: I am here on the king's orders. All summoners from Mist must be annihilated. Hand over the girl, now!
Girl: !
Cecil: Never!
Me: Over my dead body!
General: Then you shall die!
Me: *is itching for a fight to the death* Then come at me!
I wish I had such a nice sprite...
The soldiers are falling like flies... Pathetic. The general is a bit tougher though.
Just you and me...
Pathetic. He never attacked. I bet I've won the girl's heart now, even though I didn't really want to... Though as I think about it more, I would much rather have her over Kain.
*level up*
Me: I'm just fine. Slightly damaged from the cost of my own attack, but still fine.
Cecil: Yes. Don't worry about me. I won't let anyone hurt you.
Girl: ...Promise?
Cecil: I promise.
Girl: ...I'm Rydia.- I don't for Lief's warning about art, so here's Rydia's artwork:
I carried her for several miles?! She looks so mature...
*carries out the age check*
7? WTF... I must admit that my initial guess at her age in-game was around 14.
*looks again, discovering that she's 7 in Final Fantasy IV, 8 in the Interlude, and 24 in The After Years*
Okay... All of this probably makes perfect sense to Lief. But not to me, so it doesn't truly matter. I think.- Found better image:
For those of you who are curious, she's 3' 6" and 40 lbs in game. Sounds fairly light so in retrospect, she probably wasn't that hard to carry.
Everyone now understand what she looks like and how she can be discussed? Excellent, let's move on.
Cecil: Rydia...
Surprised? I'm not.
*screen fades to black like this and both wake up in their own beds*
*fast forward to morning*
Now I can plunder! :D
I found the shop keeper, time to stock up on what I can. I've got 2,417 gil. I'll buy 12 potions, 10 Antidotes, 5 Eye Drops, 3 Maiden's Kisses, 5 Phoenix Downs, and a Gold Needle. This leaves me with 427 gil.
So I was just recommended to move "the little girl" to the back row. And looking at her level... I think that's a wise move.
*finds that both just slide left and right on the screen*
I may not have a large enough party to do that.
*checks Rydia's stats*
So she can use White and Black magic, but knows no spells for either type. She can summon a Chocobo for 7 MP. I have no idea what that is.
On to her stats. Still don't know what most of these mean, but at least it looks like she'll level up fairly quickly because I've been averaging 280 exp in the desert.
Oh my god, I can actually play as her
This probably means she is now leading in the party, leaving her exposed. But I don't see a problem with that in town.
*finds an Ether in the top basket to my Southwest*
I seem to have found the weapon's shop. Rydia can apparently gain from the staff, but I'm not sure if I want spend the money.
Also, Apparently I can't buy stuff for Cecil here.
*finds an Armor shop and a name changer guy*
Strategically, I should change my name to help stay low. That said, it'll probably make no in-game difference so I'll keep my names as is.
As for Armor, again only for Rydia, there's nothing worth buying as she already has leather armor.
"The poor thing's been afflicted with desert fever. She just keeps muttering the name "Cecil" over and over."
Okay so at first I thought they were talking about Rydia, but then it didn't make sense because she didn't know Cecil's name until after she woke up here. Who do I think it is?
*shudder*
Suspisions comfirmed...
Cecil: Rosa...
Rosa: ... Cecil... Cecil, be careful!
And that's all she says. So she really is sick. There's an old dude in the room, maybe he has something to say.
Old Dude: To cure desert fever, you need a rare jewel called the Sand Ruby, found only in a cave where antlion dwells.
So apparently, I must now find the Sand Ruby. The hunt for which shall begin next time!
*wants to grind now*

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH THIS IS WHY I DIDN'T WANT YOU TO LOOK AT THE ART
seriously this is like the only game ever that has spoilers in its art
Anyway, new character means new character primer! I'd recommend TS reads these if he wants to know what the hell is going on, but he probably won't. And I don't care! Also by the by The After Years is the sequel to IV taking 17 years after, but that's not really important at all.

- Character Primer - Rydia:
for whatever reason there's no sprites of Rydia except for her TAY sprites
Command Abilities:
- Attack
- Black Magic
- White Magic
- Summon
- Item
Equipment: Rods, staves, daggers, bow and arrows, light armor
Rydia is a mage. Unlike the other mages, Rydia's unique in that she can use three types of magic - white (healing and support), black (elemental damage and status effects), and summon (usually rather powerful attacks that hit all enemies, with a few exceptions, like Chocobo). White magic is enhanced with a better spirit, and black and summon magic is enhanced with a better intellect.
Final Fantasy IV is unique among Final Fantasy games in that you learn magic by leveling up. Rydia will start learning spells as soon as she starts leveling up, naturally/thank God. She doesn't learn a large pool of White Magic - only learning three spells, one of which brings up a map and the other is fairly useless, being a status spell. (No, I don't know why that status spell is White Magic.) The exception to that are summons, which you get through the story/beating optional bosses up/beating up random encounters and praying you get it because they're really rare even though they're not really worth it.
Rydia's rods can all be used as items to cast spells. Most staves can do it too, but they're, uh, shitty spells.
- Battle Primer - General and Soldiers:
HP: General: 226 Soldier: 26
Defense: General: 2 Soldier: 0
[All following stats are only for the soldier; the general's don't really matter]
Strength: 20
The general flees as soon as you kill all of the soldiers, robbing you of sweet, sweet EXP. Otherwise, the general commands the soldiers to attack, and they attack.
...that's it, really. Why did I bother making this, again...?

You may have killed him. Or he may have fled! I'd bet on the latter and faulty memory rather then the former because the general usually flees before your ATB gets to fill up.

I'm pretty sure it does...although comparing the gil you won and the gil you should've won if you only killed the Soldiers, you appear to have killed all of them. So uh.
Impressive.

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
I already have one in the works that's probably 50-75% done, but I am still settling in after getting home from school...
Also with TS2015 now released and an order of new locomotives and a new route are now pending, I'll probably not update over the weekend.

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
- Part 8: The Pain In The Ass Journey For The Sand Ruby:
Before we get started with the search, I just want spend a moment discussing the results of my grinding.
Cecil leveled up once.
Rydia leveled up a quite a few times (which was the whole purpose of this grind) and learned
*Cure (White Magic) LV2/3
*Blizzard (Black Magic) LV2/3
*Sight (White Magic) LV4
*Thunder (Black Magic) LV5
*Hold (White Magic) LV7
*Sleep (Black Magic) LV8
*Posion (Black Magic) LV10
I looted two Potions, a Hourglass, a Goblin, an Antidote, a Hi-Potion, an Alarm Clock,
I slept once at an Inn due to Rydia running low on HP. BTW, not sure if I've mentioned this or not, but when characters run really low on health, they cower. In Rydia's case, it looks like she holds her head with her hands and sits with her lower legs to opposite sides and has tears appear above her.- Kind of like this:
What I learned from all that is that Rydia must be quite gifted to be able to learn so many spells in quick succession. Just stop and think for a moment, if she's this good at age 7, imagine how powerful she is at age 24. I also learned she has a high miss rate, when instructed to merely attack. Those attacks usually do less than 10 damage, but have one-shotted enemies. When they critical hit, they'll do about 45. For comparison, Cecil is dealing regular damage from the 50s to the 70s. My conclusion, she's better off using magic.
And now, an update on Stats.
And with that out of the way, I now have 1627 gil. I find that plenty to spend on a staff to equip to Rydia. As well as purchase an eye drops as my grinding used up one.
Now, I looked all over the desert while grinding and have concluded I have only one place I can go, to that water cave with the old man. So let's go now :D
And we're here. This time, I know exactly where to go. To the left, to the left~I haven't heard that song in a very long time, why am I remembering it?
...Why the fuck didn't you recognize me before asshole! I'm pretty sure I was carrying my sword then!
Cecil, apparently unfazed by this: What's wrong?
Old Man: I must get to Damcyan to reclaim my daughter. She was deceived by a wicked bard!
Me: Why do you need me? Just join D.A.D.D.- Spoiler:
I kid you not, this is a real thing. Well maybe a fake organization, but still a rather large amount of stuff for this. Such as these tee-shirts.- Spoiler:
Anyway, back on topic.
Old Man: We must hurry, for I sense an ill omen!
Cecil: You must be Sage Tellah!
*the sage bows*
Tellah: Indeed I am. ...That girl! She is a summoner! Perfect! She can help, too.
*is listening to a documentary about U-234 while writing this and just heard the word "Orgy" used to describe the bombings of Berlin final days of the war*
Tellah: A giant monsters lurks in the lake ahead. That devil even withstands magic.
Me: Great....
Tellah: I think we can defeat it together, and then I can finally be on my way!
Cecil: We're hurrying to Damcyan as well.
Me: We are?
Tellah: Then let us make haste!
*now scroll down to Lief's character primer thingy before coming back, assuming he has bothered making one*
Good lord, he's more powerful than Cecil. I feel so under leveled now...
*checks his magic list*
White Magic
*Cura - Heals for 9 MP
*Esuna - Cures all status effects except KO for 20 MP
*Confuse - Causes Confusion for 10 MP
*Life - Revives target for 8 MP
*Blink - Creates illusion of one's self to confuse the enemy for 8 MP
*Teleport - Warps party out of dungeon or out of battle for 10 MP
Black Magic
*Fire - Causes fire damage for 5 MP
*Stop - Stops time for 15 MP
*Blizzard - Causes frost damage for 5 MP
*Osmose - Absorbs MP for 0 MP.
*Thunder - Causes lightning damge for 5 MP
Hmm... sounds like Osmose and Blink are going to be my best spells. That said, I could horribly wrong.
Will this go better than last time?
Interesting... Two blizzards, two different amounts of damage. Unfortunately I just forgot who attacked which zombie... and so forgot why I found it interesting.
*won the battle*
That water bug on the back row, it's odd compared to other monsters I've fought so far. It flees after a couple of turns, and when I attack, it flashes Renew across the top of the screen.
Remember what I said about learning to swim? Apparently it doesn't matter. Anyway, why am I in the water? Because at the top of this waterfall is a chest. Inside is an Iron Ring. This is apparently a type of armor, which Rydia is already wearing.
Also Rydia just leveled up
*obtains a potion shortly thereafter*
So that seems to be the only way to go now, but I want to go back outside and heal up first in a tent.
Well this isn't what I expected. I probably still have a long ways to go... Conserving my strength isn't gonna be easy.
Now shortly there after this point, I came across another water bug. I not only managed to defeat it, but I picked up a mallet too.
*looks through my inventory for a description and discovers this instead*
Oh, is this how Rydia learns new summons? Let's find out!
I was expecting something more dramatic... So now Rydia can apparently summon Goblins for just 1 MP? My only experience with the Chocobo is that it destroyed the first and so far only target I set it upon while dealing an impressive 200 damage or something.
Also a Mallet removes Mini status. I don't know how though, cause wouldn't bashing a tiny person on the head with a mallet either kill them or make them smaller?
Apparently walking through water is not a choice here... Hopefully my armor doesn't rust. And that a leather outfit doesn't become something like a wet-tee shirt. For Rydia, well it's not a huge issue to me, though I have concerns about hypothermia. Tellah on the other hand, also wears an leather outfit according to his equipment tab, but um... how about we stop that train of thought...
*later retrieves a potion out of that chest*
Now I just used that Goblin summon and it's surprising. It flashes Goblin punch across the top of the screen, does a flashy animation that I was so stunned by I didn't catch it in a screenshot, and turns all three of us into one Goblin that did 16 damage and then vanished. Considering that 16 is better than what Rydia averages by attacking regularly and has a very low cost, I'll be spamming Goblins for a while.
Also I learned that Osmose is targetable on all friends and foes, but doesn't seem to work as a recovery spell in the same manner of Cure. Instead it seems to be more like Leech Life. I don't know if there's a loss of MP during the transfer though.
A door? I'm guessing the boss is behind there...
Or not? Because this is a different door...
*takes a deep breath and enters*
What is this place?
*cautiously walks forward*
PERFECT :D
But I have my doubts about if it's a trap...
*the characters split up and Tellah goes to the center of the room*
Tellah: This magic field repels all monsters. You can save and use a Tent or Cottage in here. Let's use my Tent to rest and prepare for the upcoming battle.
Me: Excuse, me, did you just say a "Cottage"? How on earth would I manage to bring something like that with me!?
There's a staircase hidden by the text box, so I think this is either the midway point or the last part before the boss. I'm gonna air on the side of caution and hit F4 to reload my save back to before this cut scene and go over to the other door to see what lies within.
Now that I know I will be healed, I'm going to be less conservative in my attacks.
*Rydia soon gains a level and learns Warp*
Considered Black Magic and takes me back to the previous floor...
Remember that treasure chest in that last screenshot that showed one? That had an Ether.
*discovers that I can't proceed to the other door due to terrain mapping putting a boulder in the way*
*Cecil gains a level while I make my way back to the safe room*
Cecil: A summoner from the village of Mist.
Tellah: She holds great potential. With proper training, she'll be able to master many spells. Look at her. What a cute face.
Me: Apparently appearances are proportional to how much talent one has.
Tellah: She reminds me of Anna at that age...
Cecil: Who is Anna?
Tellah: My daughter. She eloped with a bard to Damcyan because... I didn't consent to their union.
Me: *cough*D.A.D.D.*cough*
Tellah: What business have you in Damcyan?
Cecil: A friend of mine suffers from desert fever.
Tellah: Ah. So you came for the Sand Ruby. It won't be easy to obtain.
Cecil: Tell me more about this monster we must face.
Tellah: A vicious creature with eight huge tentacles. We must kill it and reach Damcyan...
Me: Must we have to? I think offering it a beautiful women (a prostitute should do nicely, naturally she'll receive compensation) could also work.
Tellah: ...before it is too late.
Cecil: Too late for what?
Tellah: I don't know. I only pray my instincts are wrong...
Me: And yet you follow them anyway.
*screen fades to black and gameplay resumes*
So it turns out that stairway lead to the other part of the map. As for what an Ice Rod does... It's a rod infused with the power of ice. I take that to mean that it increases the power of ice attacks while weakening fire attacks attempted by the holder.
It does raise Rydia's Offense from 8 to 9, so I'll go ahead and make the swap.
...God dammit.
Fuck...
Apparently you don't use Osmose on Zombies...
*just remembered that healing spells harm zombies...*
Not as much as Fire though...
*finds 580 gil in a chest*
*finds a bomb fragment in another*
"Same effect as Fire"
I'm guessing this means that it's just like using the spell Fire, only you throw it.
I'm sorry, but what the fuck tiny mage, what the fuck... Has my popularity gone so low and my reputation so destroyed that mages feel compelled to shrink to my level and fight me?
Whatever the reason, they beat me up good...
But Rydia leveled up and learned Toad.
Is this the boss room? :I
Maybe not, but it's weird and full of treasure...
*is starting to avoid battling if I can, but is unable to flee in the manner Lief claims due to driver limitations on my computer*
*finds Antarctic Wind, Ether, Hourglass, and a Shadow Blade!?*
"Dark sword with sharpened blade"
Sounds like an upgrade for Cecil :D
Wow, it's a significant upgrade for him as it raises offense by 10.
FINALLY
Tellah: Use a tent outside if you must.
That's an excellent idea.
A small strip of land, but it will do.
*deep breath*
*puts on cheery Vocaloid music because why not*
*Cecil walks forward into the waterfall and is swept downwards*
Are you kidding me...
WHERE THE FUCK IS MY BOSS FIGHT!!!
I feel like I'm dealing with the government... because of all the run arounds the game keeps throwing at me...
What's worse than one alligator? A mating pair...
What makes these guys so damn difficult is that they resist Thunder, which has so far been raping every other water creature... They also can target two characters at once...
*discovers by chance that Blizzard deals massive amounts of damage to these guys*
Hmm... :hmm:
In case it's not obvious what Toad does... Look at Tellah. It's kind of beautiful though.
*is now curious as to what Rydia looks like as a toad*
*finds Hades Helm and Hades Gloves*
Sounds like equips for Cecil. They do collectively increase his defending by two. Not sure what the third stat is but it rose from 1 to 2 with the addition of the helmet.
OH COME ON, I JUST WANT A BOSS FIGHT NOT RUN THROUGH THE CAVE SYSTEM AGAIN
*uses Teleport to flee*
*finds Hades Armor and Hermes' Shoes*
Hades Armor is going on Cecil (increases def by 2, that other stat by one), not sure where the shoes will go.
*quickly discovers it's something that imitates haste*
Is that him? Is it really the reason I've sat here for so long...
*quickly heals up*
Tellah: There he is!
Oh boy...
So keeping in line with the active battle system, I take it as this thing slips underwater from time to time.
*discovers magic does very little against this guy*
*lost the screenshot of Rydia down to half health*
Rydia is taking a beating...and the fan fiction writes and illustrates itself...
Seriously though, he's mainly targeting her and dealing about 22 damage each time.
So this guy is quickly dying under Cecil repeatedly dealing over 200 points of damage with each hit and Rydia spamming the Chocobo, which actually is dealing between 70 and 100 something damage each time.
AND THE CHOCOBO DEALS THE DEATH BLOW OF 85 HP!!!
AND RYDIA LEVELS UP
Maybe it is! But I need a break now... I've been at this for several hours now, my eyes hurt, and I'm still a little pissed at all the running I had to do. Plus this is already one of the longest parts I've ever done.

Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IV
Congratulations on getting the Goblin summon! It's kind of shit as far as dropped summons go, though...
I didn't make a character primer for Tellah because he, uh, wasn't introduced yet. Also Osmose is, putting it bluntly, Leech Life for MP. The Ice Rod, unlike later games, doesn't enhanced Ice damage - using it in battle lets you cast Blizzard for free. It doesn't give an Intellect bonus, though.
Toad also seals magic (except Toad) and makes your physical attacks do awful damage. You can cure Toad with Toad, too.
Also enemy sprites are scaled up; Tiny Mages are supposed to be smaller then you, hence the name. And you should feel lucky you don't have one of those sprites; you don't get any animation! This isn't Dragon Quest VI!

- Character Primer - Tellah:
Command Abilities:
- Attack
- Black Magic
- White Magic
- Recall
- Items
Equipment: See Rydia.for the record, everyone has Attack and Items; I don't know why I keep on putting them
Member of DADD, if such a thing exists in Final Fantasy IV's world. Being an old man, he's very wise, having mastered the art of wielding Black Magic and White Magic. Being an old man, he's very frail - his physical stats sometimes go down when he levels! - and also has forgotten most of those spells.
While Black Magic and White Magic are exactly the same as Rydia's besides what spells he has and that he doesn't gain new ones from leveling up (by the way: Blink makes the next two physical attacks miss entirely), his Recall command is special. When using it, he ponders for a while. When he's done, he either does nothing (20% of the time), casts a basic elemental spell somehow or Toad (15% of the time for each spell) or casts a status spell (5% each; he has four of them). Two of them cause instant death (Death and Break), one of them brings the enemy close to death (Tornado), and one of them is deliciously awesome, dealing 2 HP rapidly and a nice chunk of damage (Bio). Bio will be more useful when you can cast it at will because it has no charge time and is painful. But I disgress.
Apart from his limited spell repritore, Tellah also has a problem when it comes to MP. Namely, he only has 90 of it. Ever. Which isn't a problem now, mind, but it's still quite limiting, especially because MP restoration items are rather rare. You might say "Osmose!" but Osmose...kinda sucks...
Thankfully, though, right here and now, Tellah's pretty kick-ass, especially with Cura.
- Boss Primer - Octomammoth:
HP: 2350
MP: 146 (pretty much just for Osmose; enemies can cast spells even if they have 0 MP)
Strength: 22
Magic: 0
Defense: 0
M. Defense: 25
Evade: 0
Weakness: Lightning, Dark [e.g. Cecil's stuff]
Absorbs: Holy (because...what? No one even has holy damage yet, you crazy Octomammoth)
Every boss in Final Fantasy IV has a gimmick, and the Octomammoth is no exception, though it might not be what you expect. As you beat it up, its tentacles start fading, until it only has two left (I think?). You'd think its attacks would hurt less, maybe have its ATB Speed reduced, right? Well you'd be wrong. It gets hurt more. Which makes it easier to wipe out more HP, which makes it get hurt more, which... Combined with the fact that it's weak to elements our whole party can use, Octomammoth must've failed the School of Being An Effective Enemy. At the very least, it won't be getting into an Atlus game.
