Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Screw America:
Yes, I have returned to Cajon Pass with a British steam locomotive. I was originally going to use this one- The other locomotive:
Even with the bigger tender, I'm not sure if I will have enough water.
I have 4000 gallons and 9 tons of coal. and I have no idea what the ratio is supposed to be. I will try to keep my fire at 70 and my water at 90.
This locomotive has nice big drivers so it should handle the speeds quite nicely.
JUST PASSED A RED SIGNAL
*hits the brakes*
fuck the red signal.
I have gotten this locomotive up to 70 before, though not on such a steep hill. And the previous run with this locomotive was just a dozen miles shorter. and I won't require much water on the descent. Unless I need to use steam braking.
I think I should just focus on driving instead of worrying about such things.
I see the locomotive is rather bouncy, just like the Challenger. Well, we'll see if we can do any better. We're doing about 66 mph right now.
I derailed at this crossing on my last run.
And I'm still running
And now the battery on my ipod is dying.
No wait, I remember this crossing, so I derailed further down the line.
It might have been this one.
This also looks familar, God my memory SUCKS
It may have been that crossing.
*checks the LP*
Ah, I'm still 3 miles up the line from where I wrecked.
This is where I wrecked and I know why now, that bend. My camera was oritined in such a way I didn't see the bend and I was also typing. I came close to derailing this time, thankfully this locomotive is far lighter than a Challenger so it just made it. Clearly the line speed in that area needs to be lower. And I forgot about my water level again. I'm down to 50%
I've shut off steam until I regain my boiler pressure and water level.
I've got a 60 mph limit up ahead so that's not too bad of a timing.
I'll likely be doing some jobs here.
Track speed dropped down to 40.
This is another possible scenerio point.
A station!
*didn't stop*
This section is just 35 mph, for good reason, that is sharp.
forgot my headlight.
You know what, I'm going to turn it back off.
two tracks, let's take the one that looks less traveledLike we could.
We're having trouble on the grade, which jumped up very quickly.
Still struggling.
That sign says 41 and I am 40.5 miles from the yard. So I'm halfway there
The grade is winning, I'm barely maintaining 5 mph.
I'd love a second locomotive right now.
The grade appears to be slowly evening out, but we're still going at a snail's pace and using a lot of water.
There's a diesel pump there. Unfortantually I don't use diesel.
The grade is back at 0.5% and we're picking up some speed. Which is a good thing because I was considering stopping in the next siding and drop off half my train.
The grade is raising, FAST
The limit is 55, but I'm struggling at 16 mph.
[img]Hi, would you guys mind being left here?
1.6 mph and I'm a little more than a mile from the summit.
*30 seconds later*
Stall. We have only 180 pounds of pressure so we might as well sit and weight until we have 220 psi.
Let's go! When my brakes release enough I can get moving.
I came painfully close to the gentle slopes at the summit, which is a mere .82 miles away.
This is the summit
Oh dear.....
It's a 2.4% grade. I don't think I would ever make it up such a grade with this train.
2.9...........
I don't like how heavy my brake usage is....
We can now run 50 mph and the grade is now 3.0%
At 50 mph, I'm sure that would've also derailed the Challenger.
At least I die in a pretty place.
SHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHIT
I'm hitting that at 60 mph
I made that?! There's no way 3943 would've made that.
also note the conventially placed scrap yard.
That's reading 70 mph and my speedometer on my HUD is reading 75
We could probably set a new land speed record on this section of track.
another spot Challenger would've derailed. I'm nevious about my first train freight train.....
I took that at double track speed, 30 mph.
This is the deserted San Bernardio Yard!
Let's see, we have 1779 gallons of water and 7.65 tons of coal left.
Dammit, on the wrong track.
Clearly I am not fully ready for Cajon Pass. jokool voted for The Isle of Man so I'll do that first instead until I become more familar with the braking applications. In a way, steam locomotive brake applications are more controllable because you can select a specific pressure and then maintain that.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Cajon Freighter:
I decided to try a freight run with that other locomotive. This locomotive only carries 3,500 gallons of water, and experience shows that we will use most of this if we went the same way as last, but this time I choose to start at the yard I ended at last time. Mostly because I wanted an easier time overall.
Also this is a late evening run and will become night really soon.
This is really interesting to watch. And the whistle sounds so much nicer.
I'm clearly a freight train but my HUD says I'm cleared for 79 mph. Though I highly doubt I will make it that fast.
For some reason, it's much quieter in the cab.
It seems 30 is going to be our top speed.
There really is nothing like a nice slow assent up a 2.2% grade. Slow being 8 mph
I wonder how they used to pull trains up here.
17 mph. This is going to take a long time and we're not even at the steepest slope yet.
The moon :O
I've been driving for 30 minutes now and burned through 500 gallons so far.
And now we stop.
I'm struggling up a hill with EMPTY cars.
We're putting along at 10 mph again.
I'm sorry!
Eh?
*gets a steak to go*
Whoo-hoo for stalling less than a mile from the last stop.
We're moving again, but I have to save and quit now. I'm happy that there's a save feature
My biggest problem is when I have to put more water in the boiler with my injector, which is run by steam. I'm having to use a lot of water and thus a lot of steam. I have to reduce power settings to avoid losing too much pressure.
I had been keeping my fire mass at 60% but boosting it to 70% appears to be making the climb much easier.
I am now accelerating on a 2.2% grade, I think I'm on to something here with this fire. I'll try 80%
The so called "Devil's Dancehall"
Switching tracks again....
And the tracks go their seperate ways again, we must be getting close to the 3.0% grade. It's 1.9 right now and increasing. I've also used up half my water supply so far.
THIS GRADE
We're not doing too bad.
Just 3 miles from the summit and I only have 878 gallons of water.
Two more miles
Just one more mile!
*turns around*
OMG
the grade is now a mere 0.5% and we're almost at 30 mph.
THERE IT IS :D
And another track change.
Since it's downhill form here, I'm going to shut off the steam and coast.
If my understanding of British drag freight is correct, only my locomotive has brakes, besides hand brakes. Trains usually stop at the top of hills to set the hand brakes on some of the cars. I don't think I'll being doing that because my HUD allows me to do that on the move.
I highly doubt that this locomotive has ever gone 50 mph before. I've lowered the pressure in my brakes from 21 inches of Hg to just 16 inches. Note: the British used to use Vaccum brakes, not Air Brakes.
We're slowing down due to the grade being only 0.4% so I'll put a little steam on.
79 mph on a 55 curve
40.30 miles to go.
I missed that yard eailer.
There's that sharp bend again. I'm taking it at 31.4 mph instead of 35 mph
The locomotive looks like it was going to flip if I went faster.
What train are they waiting for.?
I've got just 100 gallons of water left. and 33 miles to go.
26 miles to go and I'm almost completely out of water in my tender.
*22.06 miles from the yard I dump the remaining 13 gallons into my boiler*
*gets a game over error*
Locomotive ran out of water..... Fuck you game.
*consults a manual while uploading screen shots*
So there are several ways to fail with steam locomotives.
Locomotive ran out of water - self explainitory
Fusible plug as melted - you ran out of water in the boiler and a safety mechanism releases ALL pressure to prevent an explosion.
Fatal blowback - your locomotive entered a tunnel with the firebox doors open.
Firebox extinguished - the fire in the firebox died from lack of coal
....I was not aware of the blowback. It says to avoid this close the firebox doors and turn on the blower.
In a perfect world, I would get all of these add ons.

Is there a way you could have gotten more water along the line?

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
Since steam locomotives are no longer used on a regular basis, almost all of the infrastructure used to maintain them on the road has been destroyed to save on maintenance costs. Cajon Pass is no exception and I didn't see a single steam locomotive refueling point on the map. Remember Cheyenne, there used to a huge roundhouse and a shop to repair anything. There was a coal loader big enough to coal 6 locomotives at once. The coal loader is gone, steam locomotives are refueled from tankers, and most of the shop and roundhouse has been demolished.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- After the Flood:
In 1999 heavy rainfall caused damage to the line stranding a four-car train at Shaklin over Christmas. It is December 27th and the water has subsided. Take a passenger train from Ryde, making usual stops on the way before rescuing the stranded train at Shanklin. Then return to Ryde with this unusual six-car train.
This will be my first multistop mission. It says it will take 50 mins and is rated a 2.
Okay, now where is my train?
There it is.
I don't like that water...
I don't this train very much. Not enough notches. It has idle, 25%, 50%, and 100%
I believe that's a distant signal, meaning that the next one is red. Also it is raining.
Okay it's not red.
Second stop.
This must be where the steam line interchanges with this subway thing (these are former London Underground trains)
Not the best laid track, I'm jumping all over the place.
My controls from left to right
Wiper
Horn
Train Brake (the only braking system in the released position)
Reverser (in the forward position)
Throttle (in the idle position)
I came to a stop too fast.
freight cars?
This is section is just 10 mph.
That's a terrible parking job, by both me and that bus driver.
Why not?
How's that?
Why couldn't I do that before?
Okay.
Woo-hoo for glitching into a signal.
Why aren't these doors open?
That's a big gap.
Why is this nessecary in the first place?
Was all that there before?
*uncouples*
Now we go back to where we started.
I don't like this pier.
Finished.
I turns out that this is really the Isle of Wight, not the Isle of Man.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- And So to Bed:
This was the first scenerio I did and also the first one I failed.
Our first stop is 3.25 miles up the line. Also I did a little research into this line and discovered it's not a narrow gauge line as I originally thought, it's actually a standard gauge line.
I'm starting with 0.40 tons of coal and 195 gallons of water.
Also I believe this is the transfer station I pointed out last time
21 mph
I don't think this line is equipped with a third rail.
Tunnel!
I can't see a damn thing.
*decides to read and drive at the same time*
What can possibly go wrong?
Okay I forget to take the brakes off while trying to reduce speed.
*hasn't gotten a chance to actually start reading yet*
I hope I don't break anyone's heart by wrecking this locomotive.
So now I have 650 gallons
Damn passenger can't clean up after themselves
This switch is very interesting and unusual.
And yet that last car seems to have a problem with its handbrake, it's red instead of grey. Though it is in the off position.
*uncoupled early*
This is the bit I missed up on last time
I thought I switched those points.
YES
I am currently in the process of acquiring two more locomotives, so expect a return to either Cajon Pass or Sherman Hill in the near future.

- The Island Liner Day Rover:
This first half of the mission is time based and won't be extensive so I can focus on driving. Simply put, I have to make it to Smallbrook before the steam train.
DAMMIT, WHY ARE MY BRAKES ON, I'M GOING TO BE LATE
SHIT
DOUBLE SHIT
5 minutes
I am not that ugly.
I stopped at Lake
2 MINUTES
1 MINUTE *PANICKING*
STEAMER
Did I do it?
Scenerio incomplete......
gotta do this one again....
*has reached the end of the line*
So... how has your day been?
*is reading*
*wasn't reading when I overshot the platform and failed again*
My Brake Pipe Pressure guage isn't working. My HUD displays 59.3 psi
Did I do it right *epic nail bitting*
"You failed one or more stops on this scenario"
What did I do wrong now
*gives up*
I've had enough of these subway cars. I'm in the process of getting more scenarios for Sherman Hill and Cajon Pass.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Denver Excursion:
This is the first of the 3 scenerios I downloaded.
What he said. Once again we are starting off with the full fuel load of a Challenger: 32 tons of Oil, 25,000 gallons of water.
Now that, is a train. I have 16 passenger cars, my largest and heaviest passenger train to date.
I'm already having difficutlies mantaining boiler level and speed.
Still having trouble with steam usage.
What does this mean!
Well this is track 1 and Track 2
I'm not only losing steam, but also speed...
I'm going to have to stop soon...
After stopping, my boiler pressure is still falling (it's at 229 psi, normal operating pressure is between 273 and 278) but my water level in the boiler is increasing.
After falling to 199 psi, it's finally climbing again, slowly.
We're back at operating pressure.
We're dragging our feet at 13 mph.
*is trying sand*
The fact we are on the steepest section doesn't help at all.
My injector is going crazy. Perhaps this is the cause of my troubles?
*tries running with the HUD off*
Running with my HUD off gives me even more control over the locomotive, allowing me to control all of the injectors (the one that is going crazy is my main one, the Driver's Live Steam Injector), at least in theory
We're coming to a stop again, only I didn't plan this one.
Rolling back.....
I'm regaining steam pressure and I'm going to leave my injector on after I reach 90%, maybe that'll solve my problems.
I don't remember so many bridges
Just when I think I'm on to something, I've got to be ready to stop up ahead.
My boiler pressure is sitting at 182.0 psi and my water continues to go down. But I am accelerating.
Almost 32 mph. My boiler pressure is still at 182.0 psi and hasn't changed at all since my last picture. I've used 6,000 gallons of water and 1.4 tons of oil. My water level is also climbing. My throttle is all the way open and my reverser is at 22%
As I finish typing that out, I'm almost at 40 mph.
My speed is dropping again while water level continues to climb.
I believe I've figured out what's going on: I'm in a cycle. My water level will go up and at the same time my speed will fall. Once at 90% my water level will start falling and my speed will pick up. The grade and my boiler pressure remain the same and my fire doesn't seem to be doing anything.
I can live on this cycle.
I've finally made it to Buford Main 2
There really isn't anything like Amercian Steam. The loading guage in America allowed for locomotives larger and often more powerful any locomotives in any other country, at least those I'm aware of and only those that are successful designs.
About time we got here. I'm running at 40 mph and it's downhill from here.
*shuts off steam for the descent*
My steam pressure isn't rising and that concerns me.
*notices that my water in the tender is dropping despite the fact I shut off the injector via my HUD*
My boiler level is increasing even with the injector off.
*recalls the same issue on Cajon Pass*
*sad face*
INTO THE TUNNEL
I entered that a little too fast
My boiler pressure is climbing and my water stopped changing.
Not exactly the ending I wanted but I enjoyed this scenario.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
Before you start reading my latest update, I'm pleased to announce that I have just downloaded two locomotives.
I will reveal them tomorrow.
I'm going try building my own route for the remainder of the day since I want to leave most of the driving of my new locomotives for tomorrow (though I did move one of them around a little bit to get a feel for the features).
I will reveal them tomorrow.
- Sherman Rescue:
There's been a derailment up the line and being the only locomotives ready, we get the assignment. Also it doesn't look like everything is rendering properly.....
No kidding, as this video shows, a washout is not a cute little event.- Spoiler:
It is raining, me do not like.
Still raining. I'm watching a docomentary on a train wreck that occured on Cajon Pass. I'm tempted to do a reinactment.
Still far from the derailment. I'm currently at the part in my docomentary where the train begins to accelerate way out of control after the application of the emergency brakes. The train was going well over 90 mph (the limit of what the speedometer could read) when it crashed. Remember what I said about being able to break a speed record? You can do it on Cajon if you're not afraid of derailing. Not only that, but it's prefectly fine to have a downgrade during an official speed test and it doesn't get much steeper than the brutal 3.0% grade on Cajon Pass.
And the docomentary is going over who died in the crash, which was shown a few minutes ago.
It has stopped raining and I'm 1.13 miles from the derailment. Currently the rescue and clean up is being shown in the docomentary. I am also coasting.
*checks the map and discovers I'm still far from the derailment*
*speeds up*
Currently at the part where the second part of the disaster occured, the gas pipeline rupturing.
I believe that is our train.
Not only is there no part 6 to the docomentary, but I also hit the cars way too hard.
Let's not fuck this up this time.
My HUD says this is a huge train. My Experience says that this is going to lag the crap out of my computer.
There's your derailment.
Okay let's get out of here.
I think it's raining again, but I can't turn on my wipes in this locomotive.
That must be a maintance of way train and check out the dual cabooses on the end.
So far my descent has been mostly in Notch 1 of dyamnic braking with the occasional Notch 2 to lose a little speed.
This signal doesn't appear in my 2D map.
We're finally arriving in Laramie.
I'm pulling into the yard now.
I got a scenerio incomplete.... fuck it I don't care.
I'm going try building my own route for the remainder of the day since I want to leave most of the driving of my new locomotives for tomorrow (though I did move one of them around a little bit to get a feel for the features).

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Proud to be an American:
I finally figured out how to place locomotives in scenerios, including the ones I paid for.
So I copyed the Sherman Hill route and started placing and this is what I created
A lag fest! Next to the backshops are my articulated locomotives. These are two versions of the Challenger. Behind the Challenger is the Southern Pacific Cab Forward (1 of the two new locomotives) and behind that is a Big Boy. I placed them over there because the turntable incident with that Challenger.
In the foreground is a set of helpers. I am going to place several sets of them all round Sherman Hill.
Front and center are my GS-4s, the other new locomotive. In the very front is the 4449's Daylight paint. Behind that is the BNSF Employee Apperican repaint. Behind that is the "War Baby" repaint. In the very back is the American Freedom Train paint job and the locomotive I will be using today, after I edit out some of the others to improve performance.
Behind the GS-4s are two locomotives I wasn't aware I had. They appear to be Mainland Europe designs.
To the left of those are the British lcoomotives with the far right two being repaints I wasn't aware I had.
That's much better. Not sure why my turntable hasn't rendered yet, but at least you can see the paint jobs of both British locomotives.
There it is. Right, let's quickly flip this engine around so we can move on.
*has another derailment on the turntable*
Okay, I'll just leave that as is.
I'll be using this version of the 4449 today.
My tender carries 29 tons of oil and 18,345 gallons of water, though my tender is labled with 23,300 gallons.
That went well.
This is my cab. The textures aren't the best but I have opening windows.
Those are the freeware Daylight passenger cars I downloaded even before I got Railworks. Because they'll clash with my current paint job, I won't be hauling them today. BTW, the last time the 4449 had this paint job was after 9/11. I'm not sure when they repainted her back into Daylight colors.
I'll be taking these diesels up to Laramie, dropping some of these off along the way. Because the 4449 does have controls for Diesels, I can use these for extra power and speed on the way.
Judging by how I can't move my reverser I'm guessing that they are already pushing me up the hill.
I just set the points for Main 1 West.
The 4449 is currently the last operational streamlined (she's semi-streamlined) from the Art Deco Era. While she will lose this title if, no, when 611 returns to operational condition, I won't mind. For each steam locomotive returned to working order, I grow just a little bit happier.
I've figured out how to change my reverser setting. I have to change my throttle to idle.
Firebox door.
*shortly after that I tried dropping off two locomotives on the fly*
No prizes for guessing what happened.
You know what, screw pulling diesels around, I'll just put them all in a siding and race to Laramie light.
See those black things peeking out from behind the skirt? Those are my air compressers for my brakes.
Yes, that really is a horn. There's supposed to be a key combo I need to hit to activate it, but I can't remember it. In any case I don't really like it.
I probably should've come at them from behind and just pushed them.
I'll run back to the turntable to refuel.
It seems I cannot take on any oil.
Or water... I'll try again at Speers on my return trip.
47.2 mph
62 mph
The 4449 is supposedly capiable of 110 mph but regulations prevent any train from going faster than 79 mph without a choice of one of 3 safety systems installed.
71 mph.
I don't think any other of the other locomotives leaves a smoke trail like the 4449.
77 mph through Granite.
I am so fastanied by my locomotive that I wasn't paying enough attention to my fire.
Literally speeding through Buford
I'm just coasting downhill now.
I'm putting on the steam now.
INTO THE TUNNEL
There are lights in my cab but I haven't figured out how to turn them on.
Atomizer...
WTF does that do?
I've got room for 3.
And I can bring everyone if they feel like standing on the tender.
This route still needs more work.
For one thing, I need to add water and coaling stations. Helpers also need to be placed.
I've been coasting since the tunnel.
I'm going to the store.
Back from the store. Everything is still in normal operating parameters.
I've stopped in my empty yard at Laramie. I have 27.2 tons of oil and 19,942 gallons left. Now I've got to back up to the beginning of the yard in order to get to the yard's Wye.
Just finished going through the wye. Once I finish setting the points for track 3, I'll be able to run back to Cheyenne
We're almost out of the yard and there is a 70 mph speed limit up ahead.
And we're set until Speers. If I can't refuel at Speers then I won't be very happey.
80 mph!
Look at that smoke trail!
Slowing down for a brief run on track 2
INTO THE TUNNEL, AGAIN
Track 3 really is beautiful. When I do my first run in Daylight colors, I'm going to run Track 3.
We are approaching Speers.
There's the water tower.
YES, I'M ACTUALLY TAKING ON WATER.
We now have 18,348 gallons and we'll continue to Cheyenne.
I still can't take on more "coal" I'll try an actual coal burner.
Still can't take on water.
I'm going edit this world now. I'm going to switch this locomotive to the Daylight paint, change/add refuel things, delete some of these buildings and other things.

- Cajon Shuffle:
That turntable is being a bitch so I don't feel like replacing it yet so yeah, I'm doing the Cajon Scenerios.
This one is shunting with a very weathered diesel. This model is one of the best selling road diesels in history, with hundreds, if not thousands, built for all different railroads. Many of the diesels built are still in active service and you will be seeing this diesel a lot in Donner Pass, which I plan to get next week.
I hit that hard, thank god the tankers didn't explode.
Coal train going by. The two leading locomotives are a repaint of one of the diesels on Sherman Hill. It's referred to as the "Heritage"
Ah, it's an empty coal train. I wonder if having an empty train actually makes a difference. I should test that sometime, take two identical locomotives, give them 10-20 cars (same number of cars for the both of them), load one train with coal and have them run at Sherman Hill or Cajon Pass.

I had noticed that locomotive and wondered what it was doing there and if I could go steal it for the extra power.
*goes to check the key combo to do this*
There we go.
We can go 45 mph now.
I'm currently using Dymanic braking and I love how it's notched off in 5% incerments.
I never had to switch tracks this many times on Sherman Hill.
Pulling into Victorville
Why the hell couldn't I have gone straight there in the first place? It would've saved time and fuel. u.u
My brakes are on and seem to be stuck on a low setting, even after hitting release a few times. I can still apply more pressure so that's not too bad, I hope.
We're losing speed on this 1.6% grade.
That concludes this run on Cajon Pass. I promise my next run will be more interesting. In fact it's all ready to go right now.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- The Return of Steam:
Welcome back to Cajon and welcome to my newest scenerio. This is a free roam scenerio I created on Cajon Pass (I didn't copy and edit it like I did for Sherman Hill). I have just two types of locomotives on in scenerio, a GS-4 in Daylight colors and the Southern Pacific Cab Forward. I have a CF in each yard and have placed several helpers along the way. I'm only hauling six coaches so hopefully I won't need a helper until the return trip back up the pass. Also it is snowing.
Off we go!
These are the freeware passenger cars that didn't come with the locomotive.
The grade is 0.7% and the speed is 59.4 mph
I'm keeping an eye out for that curve. We're approaching Hodge, which I have a helper stationed.
*passes hodge at 60 mph*
Or not.
72 mph
That's sharp
*applies brakes at 77 mph*
We made it! And we're going 56 mph now.
Hello mister helper!
The points were originally set for that siding and that would've been a disaster.
77 mph
I think that was the bend that screwed me over.
Another helper.
40 mph zone coming up. I wish I didn't had to slow down so much.
Another helper. The grades are still not where I need a helper.
Also had to slow down for that.
Now things are going to get tricky. We're at least halfway through the route.
That curve made me think I derailed for a second.
The grade is only 1.5%, as steep as they come on Sherman Hill and we are doing very well on it.
That's where my last scenerio was.
The GS-4s were originally from another code provider, but Railworks shut them down and eventually got the GS-4s and a few other locomotives in an agreement. The original GS-4s came with a free roam scenerio as well.
I think that's the last helper until the summit. Unlike the last time I brought up a Southbound train, I'm having very little trouble. I believe the lighter train and higher tractive effort make the difference.
Come to think of it, when did I last change tracks?
Now the problems are starting on the 1.6% grade near the summit. I'm losing speed. I definitely need a helper on the way back up.
Line speed is 50 (soon to be 55), I'm doing 34
I'm about 2 miles from the summit. I'm currently doing 40 mph in a 55. The grade is 1.5%
Probably no real reason to have a helper there at the summit.
I have 3 braking systems. The first is my train air brakes. However I've noticed that I seem to lose a little pressure every time I release these brakes. Pressure that doesn't regenerate. I currently have 89.6 psi there. Then we have the loco brakes, which haven't ever helped me before. My most effective braking system is my last, my handbrake on the locomotive. I've been using this brake since leaving the yard. However I only have one handbrake as my tender and passenger cars don't have any.
Down we go....
*nervous swallow*
In case you forgot, the grade is mostly 3.0% In the words of that guy who had his train run away on him. "A 3% grade for a train is like driving off a cliff"
So far the solo handbrake is working well, but that doesn't mean my passengers like it...
I've decided to go for the maximum speed I can possibly go as soon as I switch tracks.
Another helper. We're going to change tracks very soon.
Let's dare to be stupid!
*opens the throttle all the way*
There's another helper. And I'm almost at 50 mph.
66.2 in a 45 mph zone
73.3 mph!
80 mph!
90 mph!
204%20Screen%20Shots/2013-07-05_00061_zpse5f38e4b.jpg[/IMG]
100 mph!
My running gear is glitching out from the speed.
I'm going to stop now. I reached 104 mph and then started losing speed.
104 is certainly a very respectable achievement, though it was on a steep downgrade. It said that the Daylights could reach 110 mph. If I had a heavier train, I most likely could reach that speed, possibly even smash Mallard's record of 126 mph.
This is the platform I'm going to, with several switching manuvers.
And backing up like a boss.
This looks like a mess, but's not.
I was going to park next to my helper for the return trip, but I decided to go ahead and stop now. Now I need to run to the wye to get switched around.
While the 4449 slowly moves to the wye, I'll go ahead and move my helper.
Okay, so only one train will move at a time, regardless of speed. At least this replinishes my air supply.
*ran over a switch the wrong way*
Dammit..... I'll go ahead and end this session now.
