Re: Let's Play Pokémon Green!
This is actually really interesting and funny. We're gonna see a lot of strange Pokémon and attack names, I guess. And Grass being changed to Weed is freaking hilarious.
Also, I love having the protagonist's thoughts as we go along.

I always wanted to have a talking red, but he's more bad-@$$ with just "..."
also, gold/ethan was supposed to be red's brother according to a pamphlet back when gold and silver was called pocket monsters 2. so in my fan-fiction(which I NEVER post online) I keep that in as continuity, as gold's/ethan's "mom" is actually their aunt in my continuity.

It's supposed to be him talking, with the italicized-ness done to be consistent with the other not-actually-in-the-game dialogue.

Re: Let's Play Pokémon Green!
Part 2 - Under the table
- Or over the counter, as the case may be:
...hrm.
No! Not a Kelar!
Those give terrible Stat EXP!
This is a critical hit.
This is also a critical hit, but a fucking terrible one.
On critical hits: they're calculated by base speed/512. Electrode, the Pokémon with the highest base speed (I think?), has a 27.34375% chance of criticaling. Moves that increase the ratio of critical hits times this by eight, making it Base Speed/64. Electrode would have a 218.75% chance to critical hit if he somehow learned a move with a heightened critical hit ratio. Even if they aren't Electrode, critical hit-aligned moves will typically, if not always, result in a critical hit. This is why Charizard would be a good choice - he learns Slash. Incon learns Razor Leaf, yeah, but considering that Normal is an awesome attack type, the effect is lessened a bit.
This would be fun and games until you realize that critical hits ignore all stat changes, even decidedly beneficial ones, like attack increases for the user or defense decreases for the foe. And it typically doesn't quite double the damage - it deals (2L+5)/(L+5) more damage, so Bulby's criticals will deal about 1.55 times more damage then a normal, non-boosted attack. This Kelar's criticals deal about 1.29 times more damage then usual.
Also Focus Energy and Dire Hits divide critical hit% by 4 rather then multiply, making them nigh-useless. This was fixed by the time Pokémon Stadium came along, but we're not playing Pokémon Stadium, are we?
re , It's a convenient prop shop . Next time when you come to the evergreen city welcome you to have a look again! Oh, yes! Give you the sample ......! please!
Google Translate offers Furendoryi shop as a translation for フレンドリィショップ, the Japanese term for Poké Marts. Bulbapedia translates this as Friendly Shop. This makes the translation into Friendship shop a bit more understandable, yes, but it sounds like one of those shops those friendship-happy people would run. You know the type.
Weirdest thing, the -ed was there before WOUND CURE showed up. You can probably figure out what this is the counterpart of.
: Thanks, love freak!
Bobo?
...
Hm.
(But the attack)
This is a miss. Which is weird, because "hit home" is the terminology for a critical hit, and Incon only has about a 8% chance to critical, so you'd assume attacks "didn't hit home" more often.
Blow is Gust. Gust is a Normal-type move in this Generation for whatever reason.
Another level up, and Bulby's stats are raising slowly but surely. Of note is the +2 to special. This is good, as both of his types are special-aligned. Speaking of...
Bulby apparently was old and senile (but level 5) because he remembered a move he didn't have. Parasite, going off of the name, is Absorb and continues to conflict with Bulbapedia because it says すいとる translates to Absorb.
Aaaaaaaaand it turns out I'm wrong; Incon can't even learn Absorb-class moves (outside of TMs). This is Leech Seed, or Mistletoe Seed in Japanese. That is the first gap in translation I'll let slide because Mistletoe Seed is kind of long.
So after this I accidentally refreshed but you didn't actually miss a whole lot. Just me getting a Heal Wound (Potion, still restores 20 HP) and using the Pokémon Center (or, as it's called here, Centre PET).
Also even the PC is horribly translated.
o me! ......Hi! Don't go there! I've said it to you!
: Um. Okay?
out it that you sleep here! Only waiting you to dispel the effects of alcohol!
: Um. I'll be leaving now.
Yeah, this is the same guy that needed his coffee. On the one hand, it makes more sense as to why he's lying there in the first place. On the other hand, not having his coffee makes more sense as to why he was a grouch. And therefore why we can't, y'know, just walk right past him. Unless Red is secretly a softie?
: No.
ity?
: It's more of a town then a city...and my mom told me not to tell where I come from to strangers.
: Candy I have.
: Wouldn't you, as a shopkeeper?
: Free candy.
: Oh boy!
entrusted . Can you transmit it for me? Lief has checked the postal parcel from the shop!
: ...this isn't candy.
: Never said was.
: You lied to me, he-demon!
: That was refreshing. Guess I should probably deliver this package to Aochider with my ~*~extreme parkour skills~*~.
you? The PET......I've fostered are obedient?
: Well, he hasn't tried to scratch my eyes out...yet.
: Silly Lief, Incon know not how scratch! you should have had of PETTRAINER! ......what is given to me?
: Oh yeah, the guy at the Friendship Shop was being a lazy fuck even though we have a representative like, 10 feet from the entrance to town.
: But wild PETs live in grass!
: Still!
Lief gives something that should be given to Dr. Aochider! I wish I was completely making that up, but I'm not.
: Well! This is the specially made monster ball that I've ordered ! Thank you, thank you very much!
: Can I see it? Hold it? Use it to catch something not called Incon or Kelar?
: D:
: Cannot. Instead, more important to give you!
Oh come on, now you aren't even trying.
at's the matter?
: ...what?!
At this point, I was reading Cap's LP and tried ALT+F4. Don't do that.
ind enough to do sth. for me?
: What's sth.? Some kind of drug?
: On the table is my illustrated handbook of PET! found the data of PET. It can record automatically The pages also increase automatically
: Wait, how does it increase its pages if it's a handbook?
: It piece of technology, idiot.
: Handbook typically describes a non-electronic.
: Shut up. A high-science technologically illustrated handbook! Aochider, Lief, Mido , these all are kept here by you! Lief received the illustrated handbook of PET from Aochider !
: You know, you don't have to keep saying what I get.
: Mine old habit, sorry. Record all made-perfectly illustrated handbooks of PET in the world! that's my dream! but, I've become an oldman! I can't undertake to do a difficult job as best one can! thus, you can replace me to realize my dream!
: This sounds like an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras.
: Yes, but you get PET instead of trophy, and not nagging mom only needing you for realizing dream. then, you two set out at once! This is a great job left on the history of PET!
Obviously, I can't catch 'em all, but I'll do the best I can here.
t all to me!
Seriously, did the translator suddenly gain a hatred of colons?
t be your turn next!
: Well, if you're talking about in battle, the only way it wouldn't be my turn next is if I just went or you just knocked out one of my PETs. ...I have no idea what else you'd be talking about.
: you're right! Borrow a map of the city from my elder sister ! ,
: I thought Daisy was your younger sister...? Wait, no, never mind. Ignore me.
: tell my elder sister not borrow it to Lief.
: Dude, now you're just being a dick. Also it would be "lend it to Lief". Also why do you keep referring to her as elder sister that's just weird.
: you'll waste your energy through your having arrived at lotus pool!
: ...what.
Mido exits.
: Your grandson is weird.
: Do I know.
. had requested you to do the work!It must be really hard This is for you !
: Wouldn't you know that your grandpa sent me out to do something?
: Do you want the Town Map or not?
: Yes. Does this mean we're boyfriend and girlfriend? 'Cause that would be kinda awk -
: Women are so feisty...I like that. ...wait a fucking second, this doesn't even have info on the third starter! And it doesn't have actual information on any Pets besides Incon! I feel ripped off.
"Info" is your standard information thingamajig. Chirp is, of course, its cry (or I guess it growling?). Print, for some weird-ass reason, is where you look for the area. Yes, because Area is longer then Print.
It's accessed from the menu with the "Book" command. So I guess instead of Dexter, I should call it Webster.
: All of the monster balls.
: But
: ALL OF THEM.
: Sir, I'm afraid you don't have the funds to actually buy that many monster balls.
: Shit.
Yeah, this is annoying. Especially when you're trying to catch a legendary Pokémon and accidentally go over the amount of money you have and don't realize it until you find yourself suspiciously lacking in Ultra Balls.
He also asks if it costs the amount of money you spent. Which, as he's saying dollars, is technically incorrect.
I go to the route west of...whatever this place is called (I'm drawing a blank for its name)Evergreen City to catch some Pets with my balls. ...that came out wrong.
Nider is Nidoran (female). That's all I can say.
Hey, remember that urban myth that pressing a certain combination of buttons will help you catch Pokémon? That's not so urban in the Generation I games, if Bulbapedia's correct, as button presses will influence the random number generator. To ensure a successful capture, though, requires frame-perfect timing - anything less means you could screw yourself over.
Needless to say, with the power ofsheer luckmy awesome skills, Nider is caught. I have made the executive decision to not nickname any more Pokémon just so you can keep track of how bad their names are.
The humble Kelar is also added to our team!
I'm getting rid of it as soon as possible. Unless...
Machi is also caught! I seriously have no idea what to say for these things.
Eventually, Ilook up on Bulbapedia torealize that Mankey isn't in Blue, and not on Route 22 anyways. If you're playing Red or Blue and chose Charmander because dragon, I hope that you have the fortuneto capture a Nidoran and raise it to level 9, becauseto live, because hoo boy.
(Nidoran learns Double Kick at level 43 in Generation I unless your game has a Pikachu on it.)
Anyway, that's it for today. Next time: the Viridian Forest. And Pikachu. Maybe.- New Pets Captured:

Re: Let's Play Pokémon Green!
Chapter 3 - Through the woods
- Spoiler:
- : Ah, a nice, calm walk through the woods. This will be nice...
And so Lief caught a bug.
t teeth of can't be looked down on . Have you caught him?
: Erm, no. I cannot say I have.
This game is less internally consistent then Golden Sun. Another example: when using Catap's Spin Silk attack, Agile is called Spry.
...erm.
: Okay, this creepy music is creepy. Why do I have the feeling that there's more then the regular creepy crawlies here...?
: GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
...no wait, I caught one of these. Moving on.
You get three guesses as to what this is, and the first two don't count.
Also holy shit, there's consistency with the English version!
Nider leveled up, making her marginally less shit!
throw monster ball to catch PET, as they soon will run out.
: What else would you use?
: Don't know.
: GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH walking cocoon.
Random fact: catching a Telan in the wild is the only way for it to learn Become Hard pre-Yellow.
*I want to say I'm joking but I'm not. This is seriously what it's called...I think.
: ...Machi. Kill it.
Machi becomes as macho as a rat. It pleases me.
: OH MY ARCEUS
IT'S SO ADORABLE
No, don't ask me how Pikachu has a different name even though its name is the same in every language (to retain familiarity, after all, it is the mascot of the series)(this is also why Pikachu's cry was changed to "Pikachu!" in Pokémon X and Y - it was the the only Pokémon that had a constant name across all languages (besides legendaries, but I couldn't take Mewtwo seriously if he yelled "Mewtwo!" when he entered battle).
:3
The capture of Bica - wait no
I'm sorry, but Bicac is a horribly, god-awful name. (Pronounce it as "Pikachu".)
The capture of Pikachu has made Red's belt full.
: I have a bag.
This means that he's transported into the PC.
: I have a bag.
To use Pikachu, he has to go back to the Pokémon Centre and switch out one of his active Pokémon.
: I have a bag.
Or he could just leave it in there for all eternity.
: OR I COULD KEEP IT IN MY BAG.
: Grumble, grumble.
Switching out Pokémon is a bit clunkier in Generations I and II. First, you have to make sure that the Pokémon you want is in the Box (or here, Area) you're currently on. Then you have to deposit the Pokémon you want to drop, then switch to withdraw mode and get the one you want. If your Box is full (in international versions, they fill up at 20 'mons, but here they get the standard 30 Pets), you have to change the box, deposit the Pokémon in that one, change boxes again, withdraw the Pokémon you want, and change boxes again so you can catch more Pokémon.
The box also won't change automatically when its full, so when your Box is filled up, you have the awkward message of showing that the PC is full.
This gets worse if you're in the Safari Zone.
I'm dropping off Bobo because he doesn't have quite as cool of a name as Machi. Also he lacks a Flying type move.
Also, they refer to the Areas as Boxes when you deposit a Pokémon in there.
...
still carry to go! The Pikachu has agreed?
...agreed to what?
: Hell if I know.
Random fact: being in Bill's PC does not heal the Pet. The one generation Heal Balls would be useful...
et' em have a try, shouldn't they?
:
...Juvenile.
You named the Bug Catchers 'Juvenile'.
Pictured: not a beetle.
Also, random fact: Bugs are weak to Poison in this generation, and vice-versa.
Also: not effective hits are "the effect looks no so good". Which it does.
I wasn't lying earlier.
In addition, this brings up an interesting tidbit about enemy AI: they will use the move with the best match-up. Even if it does no damage. For example, Nider resists poison, so Beetl will spam Spin Silk, even though it only lowers Nider's Agile/Spry. It still uses Poison Needle sometimes, but it mostly sticks to Spin Silk.
Or maybe I'm just insanely lucky, who knows.
Pikachu hits level 4, and now I'm sad that Electric moves are special.
Of course, the STAB would make his Special higher then his Attack, but it could become even better if it was physically-aligned.
His (the other trainer's) Pokémon is a Catap, which is unremarkable unless you count the fact that it's 2 levels higher then my non-Bulby Pokémon as remarkable.
Machi now has more attack power then a rat with teeth the size of its head.
I'm so proud of him.
Oh, and Catap gained a level too, I guess. Yay.
Random fact: the prize money is a product based on the base prize money of the class times the level of the last Pokémon they sent out. The last Pet thisBug CJuvenile sent out was level 6, and Juveniles have a base payout of 10, so he gives the 60 you see here.
hey wouldn't refuse to compete!
: What if our Pets were slowly dying of poison?
: No answer? No answer. *sigh*
I think he has armpit sweat.
ill ofis unable to bring into play smoothly!
So yeah, paralysis. Unlike later generations, the Speed drop is treated as a stat drop, rather then a thing tied with the paralysis condition - curing paralysis by using a Parlyz Heal/Full Heal/Rest keeps the drop, while Haze removes it, and Speed-enhancing moves make it go back to normal.
Pikachu levels up. I'm still sad.
So, Kakuna is Teach.
Even though it's Japanese name is, I shit you not, Cocoon.
Anyway, after a tedious battle (made less tedious by the speed-up button), Catap gains a level!
And then, surprisingly, Nider gets two levels off of his last Pet, a Beetl.
...?
70 is ours.
...wait, that would be poison.
...goddammit.
I don't know which is more impressive: a rat with the attack power of a small bird or a small bird with the attack power of a rat.
Yay, wound cure!
to?
: The next town, why?
: ...oh. Fuck.
Just a (level 9) Bettl, 's all. Nothing Machi can't take care of.
Who gets a level up.
:
90 was won.
: Finally. That was the worst forest I've ever been to. We shall never speak of it again.
: Pi-
: NEVER.
Anyway, now we're located at...
...Grey. I need to know who manufactured this map.
That should wrap things up for today. Now if you excuse me, I need to grind Bulby up so he learns Vine Whip.

Re: Let's Play Pokémon Green!
You have the same chance to encounter a Pikachu as you do a Beetl.
Despite this, I have encountered23 Pikachus and no Beetls.
Chapter 4 - Anarchy
Despite this, I have encountered
Chapter 4 - Anarchy
- Despite the chapter of the title, I am fully against Anarchy mode in TPP:
- We start out this part with a surprise. No, I haven't finally caught a goddamned Beetl. No, Bulby hasn't learned Vine Whip yet.
Catap is now a Telan! He still gets kicked out if we get a Beetl because Beedrill is awesome.
Also I'm not going to make any more evolution GIFs.
Or a Teach. Those work too.
He won't learn any Poison moves (the only one Beetl's line learns in Generation I, Poison Needle, is only learned by Beetl), but he'll learn one of the best Bug moves in the game: Twineedle. And Pin Missile, which is only learned by it and Jolteon and is arguably better in Beedrill's hands (needles?) because of STAB and the higher base Attack (Bug-type moves were physical in Generation I-III).
Teach gets one of the most coherent Book entries.
And so, even though he's 3 levels lower then the rest of our party, Teach joins us! Hopefully he will let us learn about the wonders of life, or at least not sting us when he evolves.
And so, out of a morbid sense of curiosity/the desire for more EXP, I challenge Brock's Gym.
t as a goal? I'm not Trainer . but in order to win , I give you a suggestion! Is it Ok?
: Eh, sure. Why not?
: ......! Let's work hard for winning the Pet Champ!
: Yeah!
: Ok, then start......! The man who first competes is Pet on the toppest of list Pet! ......may take the advantage if exchanging the order! Try and have a look!
This...is nothing like the English version. According to Bulbapedia, anyway.
o do, little boy? you said you'll challenge Tarburchi . it's earlier then 10000 light years!
: There goes my Brock Obama joke.
: "Little boy"? You're barely any older then me!
This is, for once, correct, as the Camper in Japan was known as Boy Scout. It was changed because the US has copyright laws, unlike Japan.
I honestly see more of a case for Pewter City having a Ground-type Gym then a Rock-type one :/
shit
missed the shot
So afterresetting to get another Wound Curebeating Degud into submission, I get two level ups for Bulby:
Then he sends out this guy. Welp.
So no one gets a level from that fight (I had to send out Machi), so I guess its grinding-on-wild-Pets-time. *sigh*
Although it starts off well.
Of course, Incon doesn't learn Vine Whip until level 13...
Bleagh, screw it. I'm gonna go intoBrockTarburchi head-first!
ow Pet gym!
: What.
This is Gray. Possibly Gray City.
And I thought you were Tarburchi.
: my insistent will reflects in my Pet!
: Makes sense.
: insistence and tolerance! Right! is used. All are Rock types!
: And ground types.
: Ha,ha! Everyone knows it will lose, still compete? Is the characteristics of PetTrainergood enough? come on!
The heeeeeeeeeeeell.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuforgot to heal.
Become Round (pictured; it's Defense Curl) and Go All Out are Stone's two moves. I wish I was kidding.
Although Bulby can just use Parasite + Chirps to whittle it away. The best thing about Become Round is that it deals no damage, but still sets off Parasite's HP draining. It's awesome.
Five uses of Chirps were enough to make Stone's Go All Out to deal the same amount of damage that Parasite heals, basically winning the battle unless a chance Hit Home comes along.
Also I am extremely glad Parasite deals percentage damage.
Because without it, Bulby wouldn't get this! ...I'm sad that I can't use that 21 Special.
And it would've come in handy for this!Brock'sTarxi'sOnixYeewa has Go All Out...
Tolerance (Bide)...
(Semi-interesting fact about Bide: it's affected by speed, just like normal moves. At least, before Diamond and Pearl, but we aren't playing Diamond or Pearl, are we?)
(Less interesting fact about Tolerance: it says "to use!" rather then "to assail!" or nothing at all.)
(Not really interesting fact at all: Parasite doesn't count as damage, so I could just stall 16 turns and win.)
And Noise (Screech. Also gah fuck my ears)
And though my intention it was not, Parasite ends up defeating Yeewa.
Earning a level in the process. I was so sure that, out of spite, the game would bump Bulby to level 13 and thus learn Vine Whip.
y! Confer you a grey badge admited(sic) by alliance PET as certificate you've won me!
: ...how do you pronounce , ,?
m Tarchick! Again with the name changing?
Anyway, the Grey Badge allows us to do a few things. One, it allows usage of the Hidden Skill Flash. Two, it raises the Attack of Pets by 9/8ths or 112.5%.
Oh, we also get this: the 34th skill machine, housing the skill Tolerance. Tolerance, in case you don't know, has you do nothing for 2-3 turns, but returns all of the damage dealt during that time period to the opponent doubled.
It can also be learned by anything that can have a disc slapped on its forehead and be taught something by it.
Meaning most of these guys can learn it (Teach is the exception, but he can when he Beedrillifies). So...who should get it? Or should I wait for more Pets to be caught? It is up to you, dear readers!
Also heads-up, Kelar is most likely going to be replaced. Just saying.
