So who wants to start taking bets on if the other 40 something users show up and completely override all of our votes?

If that happens, it'd be like 1,000,000 to 1 odds or something like that.
Put me down for a dollar.

Could shorten it to Mido.
Or Midol.
- For those who don't get it.:
- Midol is a medicine that helps deal with menstrual cramps.

I am using Nose. Any attempts at convincing me to name him something else will be completely ignored.

Re: Let's Play Pokémon Green!
Part 1 - Welcome!
- To the world of Pocket Monsters!:
The trainers send out a Nidorino and a Gengar!
The Gengar swipes at Nidorino, but he deftly dodges! Also, I'm 95% certain that that's illegal.
But the Trainer made a (perhaps fatal) mistake of instructing Nidorino to use Bite! It's all over!
And before you say "Bite's super effective on Ghosts" this is Generation I. The Dark type didn't exist yet.
Da nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh! Da nuh da nuh nuh nuh!
The two options on the start screen are "Start" and "Setup". Let's choose "start".
I regret to inform you that the translator was either an idiot or pressed for space, as the game fails to properly line break many, many times.
ocket monsters! My name is Aochider I was called . Dr. PET was love and esteemed by us all!
I swear to Arceus I didn't format that conversation at all. Also, oddly enough, Bulbapedia says his Japanese name was Dr. Yukinari Okido, but here it's Aochider. Even though Okido is shorter.
Hrm.
called as pocket monsters live in every corner!
*Nidorino cry*
Seriously, this is a grammatical mess.
as a pet to take part in the competition! And I'm doing the study of this PET. That is all.
So now you're calling Pocket Monsters Pets. Even though they weren't called that in the original Japanese - there, too, it was shortened to Pokémon (assuming Bulbapedia isn't lying to me).
And yet you call Oak "Aochider".
Erm.
What kind of name is Define? ...oh.
Either you paly(sic) partner or your opponent. Well? What's your name?
I completely missed it, but I put in my name as Lief. It works because "Lief" is a homonym of "Leaf", as in the part of the plant. Also I'm pretty sure he's not a little boy.
And that was an awkward way to say that we're friendly rivals. Also at least pretend like you're old and senile.
Um.
Shit, not enough letters.
Also that horribly mangled thing where the cursor is pointing is the ED key. Because you can create an entire tileset for letters (those were not in the English Blue), but heaven forbid you exert some effort on making a ED button.
"P2 START" does ab-so-fuckinglutely nothing except for change it to "P1 START". In the English version, it was lower/UPPERcase (the lowercase letters here were other things, such as ,, ., PK, MN, etc.).
The doctor spontaneously loses then gains his memory. Also he's in a rush for some reason.
Also, come on. Yes, I know Japan doesn't have gendered pronouns (I think it doesn't, anyway), but you can't tell Mido's a guy?
am and adventure! go to the world of pocket monster! go!
Instead of playing a Super NES/Famicom, we're operating a computer. Because I know of computers that plug into your TV and are operated with a video game controller.
(I know the Famicom is short for "Family Computer", but "Famicom" is shorter then "computer", and "playing" is shorter then "operating". Also it makes 500% more sense.)
In addition, we're now told we need to take a walk. Which makes sense for what we're about to do.
What's weird is that, from my limited scope of Lief's character (i.e. the computer), he would be a (somewhat, at least) active kid while also a nerd. Thus, taking walks would be a common exercise for him. So unless he just runs around Pallet all day, he should be taking walks on Route 1 often. This is weird for reasons any and all players of Gen I/its remakes should know.
Aochider: hey!wait me!
: What the fuck?
That line just made me think of Aochider as a Strawberry Shortcake character. It also showcases the game's horrid translation, because I mean.
: t now! The wild PET run out from the grass ! you can let PET have a try if here the re is PET but......
: I could barely understand a word you just said. Also. You do realize "wild PET" is an oxymoron, right?
: No. wait for ok,follow me!
:
Lief, of course, follows Aochider to his lab.
Of course, there he finds his worst enemy: Mido. Or Mido, apparently.
Random thought: Voltorb/Electrode's menu image is a Poké Ball, if I remember. So perhaps these are Voltorb sprites?
: ry tired!
: Is it Mido? . ...... ......Ah, really? I'm shouting! wait a movement!
: You're what?
: Ah, Lief! Are there 3 PET?
: Well, one or more of them could be empty or holding an item.
: I need none your sass. Ha, ha! There conceals PET in the monster ball! I was famous PET TRAINER for my excellence!
: Ah, good. I would've assumed you were known for your incompetence, if your English is any indication.
: but now PET is old, only exists three s.
: What, did they all die or something?
: Legally, say no, but yes. give you one! ......select, please!
: Fuck yeah!
: How do you pronounce that?
: give me one!
: Wait your turn, you whiny, Engrish-speaking bitch.
: H'm! Don't be anxious MIDO! select one you like!
Even Dexter isn't immune to Engrish. Of course, that's a given, considering who he was programmed by.
Also, I think Charmander's line has the ugliest Red/Green sprites (of the three starters, at least).
adow of human figure?
: I...
Squirtle's line is the closest to its modern-day counterparts, methinks. Weirdly enough, I think Blastoise looks closer to its modern-day counterparts here then in Red/Blue.
...
lant PET. Will it do?
: Sure. Whatever.
and very good!
I think this refers to the fact that Bulbasaur/Incon has an advantage on most of the gyms. This is actually less bullshit then what I think he says in the international versions - it "grows fast". Which is bullshit because it's in the Medium Slow group.
The font in Red/Blue was skinnier then this. So many problems could be averted...like this.
And then it goes onto a new text box to say "from Aochider!".
...
Hell yeah!
...what?
Holy crap, not horribly butchered English!
Shado is, obviously, Charmander.
...although now I honestly have to wonder where this guy is getting his names from. Bulbasaur's name went from Fushigidane to Incon, Charmander went from Hitokage to Shado, and Squirtle went from Zenigame to Torto. (Zeni is, apparently, an old Japanese word for coin, and Squirtle's back looks sort of like coins (?), although Bulbapedia also has it as "pond turtle"...perhaps the former is an in-universe explanation?)
Also on a random note: ゼニガメ, on Google Translate, translates perfectly into Squirtle.
So now let's look at the menu, seeing as how we have most of it. GOODS is where you access your items. The fact that GOODS is the term isn't surprising, as this is the same company that made Mother. PET, obviously, refers to Pets, or Pocket Monsters. So let's check up on him.
Pokémon lesson time! Back in the day, IVs functioned differently. There were only 4 of them - Attack, Defense (Protec), Speed (Agile), and Special (Specia) stored. HP was generated depending on the other IVs, and Special Defense just plain didn't exist! (When Special Defense did come into existence in Gold/Silver, it was determined by the Special IV to maintain compatibility with Red/Blue/Green/Yellow.) The formula to determine stats was
with the + 5 being replaced by a + 10 for HP. EVs were also calculated differently, but we'll get to that when we get there. Bulby either has really good or really shit IVs, as they're:
Attack: 11-15
Defense: 1-10
Speed: 5-14
Special: 5-14
HP: 5-14
Unless I'm being made a fool of. Of course, it's too early to tell, so let's just pray he has good IVs. (IVs in Generation I and II were out of 15, rather then out of 31.)
And before you ask: no, I have no idea why Grass is called Weed.
More translation weirdness is seen: "Go All Out" is Tackle, while "Chirps" is Growl. Wisdom is Experience Points (which is a way of saying Experience), while Additive is somehow gotten from "To the next level". It really irks me that this is a literal translation of the Japanese. That's what makes Kefka boring.
This is my trainer card, which continues the "no spaces" tradition. The Japanese above each portrait would seem to be the Leader's name, at least from the --- above the 8th Gym Leader's portrait.
The symbol next to money is the kanji for yen, which Pokémon Dollars () is basically.
Anyway, on to the main event:
The battle with Mido!
...seriously, the translator keeps on making the most basic mistakes.
: difficult for me to get PET from grandpa!
: Oh come the fuck on, first you complain about you not going first, now you say it's difficult for you (to accept, I presume)?
: ....... Act as my opponent!
: ...I despise you.
You really couldn't fit the entire thing in one text box?
I'm assuming you all have a (basic) idea of how the screen looks, so I won't post it.
That was...um.
Hrm.
...why does Shado have "to assail!" while Bulby doesn't?
I think this is a miss? It could be Bulby's unable to have his attack lowered any more, but I don't think he's used Chirps enough to do that.
In the end, I barely win because Mido is an idiot. Yay idiots!
Come on, can't you be at least internally consistent?
And Bulby levels up!
I suppose now's a good time to talk about EVs: they don't, technically, exist. Rather, there's something I call stat experience, because it's different enough from EVs to get a new name. Rather then getting a few points depending on the Pokémon, the base stats of the defeated Pokémon get added to an internal thing for the Pokémon:
where EV is the Stat EXP for the Pokémon.
For example, Squirtle has a base Defense of 65. 65 divided by 8 is 8.something. Let's assume Bulby has a Defense IV of 10. Bulbasaur has a base defense of 49 (leading to a basic defense of 67). Multiply that by 6 (Bulby's current level) for 312, then divide by 50 for 6.24. Add 5 for...11.24. Hrm. Maybe it rounds up?
t's so good for your pet!
Stat EXP is good thing! And regular EXP. (Wisdom? Would that mean it's Stat Wisdom?)
...why is that a money sign.
PET first! you'll get stronger and stronger! Lief! grandpa! Then, bye-bye!
...it's a bit disorienting, having him be so friendly. And huh, he doesn't say smell you later.
Huh.
Anyway, that seems like a good place to end this for today. So see you next time!

Re: Let's Play Pokémon Green!
good point.
also, I can't install any GBA based emulators to play mother 1+2 and mother 3 with their translations, and NO$GBA doesn't support GBA anymore, as it's now DS,(don't ask me why it's name hasn't changed to NO$DS yet)
