This one is about move sets, such as one that has no damaging moves whatsoever (including moves that inflict burns, poison, or confusion).

(considering my usual tactic is to use the starter, a random Pokémon of choice, and a legendary if applicable... and that the original gen 1 games and their remakes don't allow that sort of thing, it took me five years to beat firered...)

gen I and their remakes don't allow using 2-3 Pokémon to beat the elite four because IT'S THE HARDEST GEN!!!!!
b the time I FINALLY beat firered (my first Pokémon game I EVER owned), here's my team...
1. level 95 blastoise
2. level 77 dodrio
3. level 52 poliwraith
4. level 49 morowak
5. level 53 gengar
6. level 37 pikachu

and in diamond (my second Pokémon game)
1. level 56 diagla
2. level 59 infernape
3. level 27 staravia
4. level 7 pikachu
5. level 33 roserade
and I did NOT have a sixth Pokémon in my party...
quite a difference isn't it?

And before you say "lief you can't get a legendary before the elite four in generation i!!!!!!" let me show you Zapdos and prove you wrong.

may as well be inexperience, but I had similar experiences when I bought red from my friend's brother.
I tried catching the birds in gen I, but I failed as I'm bad at catching legendaries, (hence the fact I ALWAYS use the master ball on the title mascot)
