Re: Crystals! Swords! Job Classes! THIS IS FINAL FANTASY I!
Great Scott! ...Lief's Accuracy is really high!
...what? Oh yeah. Jesus christ you grinded...ground?...a lot.
I would start figuring out how to upgrade your class.
(And yeah, I want you to do the Earthgift Shrine. And I told you, they're supposed to still be sad, they're idiots.)

Basically, what I did was just kill everything that I ran into. I don't think I ran during any fights, except for maybe a couple of times really early on when my party was nearly all dead.

Also, I switched Truthseeker to the top since it seemed like Lief was getting attacked a lot while he was there, and Truthseeker can take quite a few hits without taking much damage.
Funny how that happens.

Hm, I think it's weird how it lines up, now that you mention that. I know TS had more HP in the cage then me, while I think Lima did too, but Chaos had less.
Also, randomly going off topic, the closer you are to the front does affect how much you are hit.

Re: Crystals! Swords! Job Classes! THIS IS FINAL FANTASY I!
I believe that the reason Garland says "I will cut you down to size!" is because this is the European version of Dawn of Souls. Final Fantasy I wasn't originally released in Europe, therefore "knock you all down" didn't come to European shores, therefore they didn't feel the need to translate it like that.
Dammit, Europe, I thought you were cool!
Anyway
Chapter 6 - Cave of the Damned
Dammit, Europe, I thought you were cool!
Anyway
Chapter 6 - Cave of the Damned
- Biggs: Do we have to go through this?:
- Before we begin, I would like to note that I forgot to save after I did all of that, and thus had to do everything from the pirate fight over again, which means I had to grind back up to level 8. During so, pirates dropped a Sabre for me. Y'know, the damned evolution of Biggs' Scimitar? I gave it to Lola, but not for long, as the Broadsword has superior attack and accuracy.
I then sold it, as Biggs was able to chain three hits, which is something I'm not entirely sure the Sabre would let me do. I mean, it's possible it would, or if it doesn't, the two hits it gives outdeals the three hits of the Scimitar, but I like playing it safe and I like seeing more hits.
First things first: get Orko Thundara. I mean, sure, I guess we could get Fira, but Thundara makes any sea grinding I want to do more effective.
Which is good, because we need to sea grind in order to get Cura and/or Heal.
Next we spend the rest of our money on antidotes. Poisona is 2500 gil and a level 4 spell, so that would take quite a bit of sea grinding to get to.
Next we try to show offLit2Thundara, but fail due to getting the frame of it flashing.
Jesus that's a lot more HP restored then Cure. For the record, Cure restored 30-40 HP.
(I got this shot from trying to go to Cornelia to use the inn...but then realizing that it would be ineffective.)
Then I get 10 more antidotes. You can never have enough antidotes.
Before you get Poisona, anyways.
See? If I hadn't gotten those ten antidotes, I'd have, like, four antidotes after this!
(I then proceeded to get an antidote as a drop from a Warg Wolf. Woo!)
Yig. What the Pandemonium happened here?
...oh. It's marsh. .3.
This hole in the ground somehow is the Marsh Cave. Tell me, does one usually access caves in marshes from holes in the ground?
...U1? Bah, stupid European game. First you remove Garland's line, now you change it from B1 to U1!
....oh. U means under. My bad.
So we go south to...
I continue going south to...
...why is there a door in a cave.
Zombies are the second genus of undead monsters, obviously. This means, if I got Fira or Diara, they'd be screwed.
Fortunately for them, I only have Dia and Fire...
...but Thundara also works.
Zombie-genus enemies can inflict Paralysis on contact. It sucks as much as you'd think it would.
Granted, they didn't paralyze Orko.
This is their fatal mistake.
One thing that may in/decrease the tediousness of the Marsh Cave is that there's treasure abound here. If it's equipment like this, it at least provides a nice gil bonus from it being sold.
My god, they're hideous!
Also, I totally forgot to capture it, but they can chain up to 8 hits. It's just an impressive number; they can't utterly destroy anyone with just them, anyway. Maybe they should go to Ivalice, it would be more threatening there.
See? Of course, Biggs still has three-digit HP, so it's not really effective.
This room, I believe, confirms you're going in the right direction.
Phoenix Downs are used to revive people, if I haven't told you by now. However, due to the way revival works in this game (you're either revived at 1 HP or at max HP, there's no middle ground), and Phoenix Downs fall into the former, they're more useful to use outside of battle (or as a replacement for the church).
Werewolves are Rank III in the wolf genus, and are the first enemy we come across that can regenerate their HP, at 3 a round. It's not effective, but there's an infamous superboss that uses this trick much more effectively.
I realized that Orko was eating away at his MP. I assumed that I should just go outside and use a Tent. Then everybody got a level up.
I was going to go back to Elfheim, but I realized that would be ineffective. So just exited and used a tent.
Anyway, I'm going to stop the update here. Next time: demons!- End-of-update stats:
Whoa Biggs has high accuracy. And he's evasive. And yet 8 attacks can be chained on him.
Eh, Evade in Final Fantasy I isn't the same as Evade in other games. In other games, he'd be a god.
Or par for the course in Tactics Advance.
Magic Level determines what levels of magic you can use. I hate it, as it means you can't actually *buy* the magic until you get the proper magic level. Lola gains magic levels slower due to being able to use both schools of magic.
I personally think Lola's doing pretty good. Better then Biggs, anyway, physical-wise.
Also chain mail is making a lot of difference in his defense. ._.
You'll notice that, despite wearing less (what? no, not like that), Biggs has more Evade then Miki or Orko. One of the perks of being a thief.
Anyway, on the topic of Miki herself, physically she's doing pretty good for a mage. She has 2 less strength then Lola and 3 less then Biggs (which seems like a little, but I don't know how much it factors into damage), and while she's second-slowest, she has the most stamina, gaining at least 3 HP on level up! Also I'm pretty sure she hit the ninth of the HP limit on like level 7. It wouldn't surprise me at all.
Orko is as slow as fuck. However, he has the most of the stat he primarily uses for damage, and is pretty lucky, too. (Assuming intellect is used to calculate magic damage and not do something stupid like calculate how much MP he gains on levels.) He also has a fuckton of MP to blow stuff up with, compared to Miki's 108 and Lola's...94.
I'm tempted to say Lola's part Bangaa. It would explain as to how he sucks at magic while being a mage.

Re: Crystals! Swords! Job Classes! THIS IS FINAL FANTASY I!
Chapter 7 - Cave of the Damned (cont'd)
- Not really bad, just tedious. Very, very tedious:
Slime-genus monsters are extremely resilient to physical attacks and have a fair bit of HP for this bit of this game.
...this is standard stuff for Orko. Maybe it's just the Green Slime...?
*checks the bestiary* Ah yes, it is. The question is, why? Stat-wise (except defense), Gray Ooze is superior...
Spider-genus monsters, in case I've failed to explain, can poison on contact.
Also, Biggs can chain 4 hits. It's beautiful.
Shadow-genus monsters can inflict Blind, which reduces accuracy. This is not a huge problem, especially because you can chain hits in this game. There's a level 2 spell to cure it, but why would you use it, save to fill up a magic slot? (it wears off after battle)
They're also undead.
I'm currently sitting at 3563 gil, for the curious. This means I can completely outfit Miki or Lola in level 3 spells.
One damage a hit. Green slimes don't fuck around.
Then again, neither do I.
If you're playing along, I recommend not recklessly firing off level 3 spells with no abandon. You'll see why.
The only exception is if you run into a Green Slime group. That would take forever.
(We got a Hi-Potion from that group, which restores 150 HP once. These were my lifeblood during my solo-thief challenge.)
No, we're not coming back here once we get the Mystic Key, because screw this place.
And another one!
Screw Gargoyles.
Ah, here we are! Freaking finally.
: I assume this is the treasure we came here for.
: What gave it away, the ominous statues?
: ...yes.
: So, let's just take take it and...
: ...!
: What?
: I sense a great evil...
: God damn this cave.
Piscodemons are the boss thing of this cave. They can appear in any number, from two (I think) to nine. They have reniculously high stats, with 30 attack, 16 defense, 33 agility, and 84 HP. They have 21 accuracy, thankfully enough, so they can't chain 4 hits on Biggs or whoever.
That's not to say the one attack they get doesn't hurt, though.
I mean, compare it to Biggs. He's doing 29 damage a hit, and he has Temper!
Thunder magic is the only type Piscodemons don't resist. I didn't plan it, but it makes it better.
Of course, the Piscodemon doesn't attack Biggs and die. No, he has to attack Lola and die! And he can't miss, either; he HAS to hit and take off Lola's remaining 24 hit points! Cock.
...._.
The event that triggers the Piscodemon attack doesn't go away after you beat them. It could offer a good place to grind, were they not Piscodemons.
(I find what they changed and what they left weird. For example, they managed to add the Ultima Weapon and Rune Weapon's shtick into this game, but left things like the earth not healing.)
Anyway, after a quick grab of the crown and running for our lives...we revive Lola!
: Why'd ja revive me? Heaven is full of Red Mage chicks! Hot, sexy red mage chicks...
: ...
: ...what?
: If you return from the dead, I'll let you be able to set a group of enemies on fire.
: ...
: ...
: What? I'm thinking.
: ...you're doing it.
: Darn it.
I blew the entire cache of gil I had on new magics for Lola and Miki. Lola got Fira, NulBlaze (halves Fire damage; useful for the Fire Fiend (obviously :B)), and Cura, while Miki got Diara and Heal (a multi-target Cure, essentially).
Anyway, in order to get Matoya's eye so we can get the Awakening/Poke Flute/whatever, we have to go to a ruined castle to the north...
: Jesus, this place is ruined.
: This world's god is God?
: In the Japanese version, apparently.
(No seriously, the revival places were churches in the original, complete with cross on them.)
: MacGuffin delivery service, we deliver anything, any time, anywhere.
: Eh?
: You fools fell right into my trap! I am Astos! I am king of the dark elves!
: I shall be the TRUE elf king!
: Hey man, as I long as you pay, I don't care.
: Ah, yes...I shall pay you...with your DEATH!
: Dammit.
: Gah!
Astos is a evil bugger. He has access to Thundaga, Fira, Slowra, and has 30 attack. And 42 accuracy.
._.
You should start out the battle by applying layers of NulBlaze and NulShock.
And Haste on your physical attackers, but guess what I forgot to do?
Astos typically starts off the battle with Death.
He cast it on Biggs.
It hit.
I don't have any Phoenix Downs.
GOD
Applying two Tempers helps out a bit. That's about 17/50ths of his health. With 3 hits.
Astos, after Lola was applied with Protect and Invis, deals only 10 damage to him. One-sided, ain't it?
That took, like, what, three, four rounds? Woulda gone quicker with Biggs...
Anyway, our team (minus Biggs) gets 750 EXP and 2000 (!!!) gil!
And a level. Alas, poor Biggs.
And so we gain the crystal eye.
So, what'll we do with the crystal eye recovered? Find out...next time!

Re: Crystals! Swords! Job Classes! THIS IS FINAL FANTASY I!
The Western Keep, by the by, has this as its BGM. You don't really hear it a lot when you fight Astos, but it's also the BGM for an actual dungeon later in the game,
Chapter 8 - Da nuh nuh nuh nuuuuuuuuuuuh!
Chapter 8 - Da nuh nuh nuh nuuuuuuuuuuuh!
- I think that's how it goes...:
- Last time, Biggs died (twice)(finally), Lola died, Orko shockingly manages to keep his no-death record up, and we killed Astos. Due to the last bit, we have a crystal eye now. Who needs a crystal eye?
: That'll be 350 gil.
: Since when did you run a delivery service?
: Since I became an JRPG protagonist.
: ...
: This works too.
: Arguably better, otherwise we couldn't wake up the Elf Prince.
: What, we couldn't just hit him with a physical attack?
...um...
Nothing says overkill like a level 3 spell on a monster Orko can one-shot with his physical.
Although, to be fair, there were three skeletons.
Anyway, back to Elfland...
: You really couldn't just punch him awake?
So we get the mystic key!
Now to loot him blind.
The Mythril Hammer goes to Miki; compared to her old hammer, it gives +3 attack and +5 accuracy. The gil is gil. The bronze gloves are useless, as by the time we get the class change we'll have better gloves.
Now we go to Cornelia and loot them blind:
The Sabre and Tent is nothing new. Cottages completely restore all HP and MP. Equipping a mythril knife gives Orko +5 attack and +5 accuracy compared to his knife. An iron armor falls into the same uselessness as the bronze gloves. Nitro powder is our ticket to the rest of the map.
Then we go here:
To loot their inhabitants blind.
Yay Orko!
Lola can equip the mythril mail, giving a +3 to his defense. Mythril, legendarily, is lighter then iron (or whatever chain mail is made out of), so he gets a +7 to his evade. Ethers restore 50 MP. Great Helms add to the list of stuff we can't use due to not having a Warrior.
The Wyrmkiller:
Hell yeah.
(Lola could equip it too, but)
Talk to this guy (a dwarf, as they all are here) to be able to further.
I have a few questions as to how that worked, but eh.
And before we bring this update to a close, there was a locked door in the Western Keep.
But first lets us admire Biggs one-shot an ogre with no enhancements but what his sword naturally gives him.
Wraiths, rather then Blinding on hit, paralyze. Still undead.
They give a fuckton of gil, too. I think that was a fixed encounter...
There were mummies here.
According to the Final Fantasy Wiki, they can inflict sleep on attack.
I keep on killing them quickly, so I can't test it.
Anyway, the loot:
The Falchion has the exact same stats as the broadsword, except thieves can use it. The Power Staff raises Orko's attack by 2, but lowers his accuracy by 15, so.
Anyway, next time: the world beyond!

Re: Crystals! Swords! Job Classes! THIS IS FINAL FANTASY I!
Chapter 9 - Somebody call a Conjurer!
- ...it's a Final Fantasy XIV thing:
- Welcome back! Last time, we looted everything from everybody. Now, we go onto new territory, so
we can loot everythingwe can continue on our quest to light the crystals.
This is the party we're currently rolling with. Miki has NulFrost because the other Level 4 White Magic options were considerably less useful.
Orko has Haste because Haste is awesome. It doubles the amount of hits an attacker does in one attack command. Biggs, for example, can do 4 hits in one round. With Haste, that becomes 8. All for, what, 15 MP? That's currently (if my math is right) about 8% of his MP.
The best part about it is that Ninjas get access to it, allowing Orko to do other options, like Haste Lola, amplify Biggs' attack even more, etc.
: Egh, what is this?
: I dunno. The water seeping from it is extremely fetid, though.
: Oh well. I'm sure it won't be relevant to anything. It certainly won't open a way to a bonus dungeon in the near future unlocked by defeating the Fiend that the statue is based off of.
: And if it does, it certainly won't be a dungeon that has us face bosses that are from another planet/dimension, culminating in the bonus bosses from that place.
The place is located here, near the canal that was opened up.
Our actual interest today is here: the city of Melmond!
"City" is a bit of an overstatement, though.
: Eugh, what happened to this place?
: Isn't it obvious?
: What is?
: This place has been attacked...by the undead! Also the Earth Crystal is decaying...due to the undead!
: ...no. That was not obvious at all.
: Why must magic be so expensive?
: Because the world hates you.
: Bah.
: ...
As an aside, there is no item shop or church in Melmod, due to the Vampire - the source of the earth rotting - destroying 'em. This would be more of a dick move if you couldn't backtrack or if Life wasn't sold in this very town. Thankfully, we can and it is.
Shadows come back, even less threatening then when they first showed up, thanks to the fact that Biggs can chew through their 50 HP covered by a whopping 0 defense now.
See, Blindna isn't worth the spell slot.
Their physical attacks aren't even worth anything - Biggs, who has among the worst armor in the game on, took what, 9 damage?
Their weakness to Fire and Dia doesn't show up much because Orko can Thundara them into non-existence.
Biggs also got a wholly underwhelming level of 3 HP and Agility. Although it paves the way for more hits and thus more damage (especially with Haste ), so at least it's not completely worthless.
I mean, it's not enough to make any notable difference, but whatever.
Southeast-ish of Melmond is this asshole, Titan. Like the summon, but not as cool.
: Why not?
: Plot railroading!
: Even though right after we beat the boss that you're preventing us from getting to, we can basically proceed with the plot however we please?
: Sounds about right!
: ...
Ghasts are the tier II of the zombie family. They can inflict paralysis with their attacks, meaning that our second-most damage dealer against them runs the risk of not being able to act.
Interesting note; in the original and PSX version, at least, Dia spells typically have a damage potential on par with the Blizzard spells. This means they're better then Fire spells for damaging the undead. This is, of course, balanced out by the fact that they will only hit the undead.
More south and less east of Melmond is this cave. It's theEarth CaveCavern of Earth, and it's where our first objective resides.
I take a nap, and head in.
Here, you do not want to go east or southeast. Why? Here, I'll humor you.
...wait, no, this isn't it. I mean, I suppose a pack of Cobras is bad news, but that's not what to fear.
Damn, this isn't it, either.
This still isn't it! For the love of...
Anyway, if this version of Final Fantasy I was working, as soon as you enter the west hall, you'll get into an encounter with a Hill Gigas:
and 0-3 Lizards:
Hill Gigas have 240 HP, while Lizards have 92 and have stopped being a challenge since Pravoka. You would encounter them every step. Given the Hill Gigas' high EXP and gil payout, this is considered -
- oh, hey. Glad you finally showed up.
...aren't you supposed to be at the beginning of the hall? Whatever.
Hill Gigas (Gigar? Gigases? Gigai?) also hurt. Keep in mind Lola has among the better defenses on our team.
This is also a good time to show that magic is kinda bad when it's not hitting a weakness. Or at least Lola is. Then again, level 5 magic did just open up...but we just got this magic, it shouldn't be sucking too hard yet. ...then again, the Hill Gigas is a higher tier enemy...but then why is Biggs doing more then half of its health? Bah.
Yes, we haven't even gone through half of the stated objectives and we have level 5 magic. Deal with it.
Yeah, it's Lola.
They give pretty good chunks of EXP.
And even better chunks of gil, for their actual not-very-high difficulty (especially if your physical DPS was actually supposed to be a physical DPS, like a Warrior or Monk).
Remember: these are fixed, give or take a few lizards. It's a great way to level grind.
Lola also gets a level, with +28 HP, +16 MP, and gains in Strength and Luck. The HP and MP redeems it.
A random encounter later, Biggs nets +23 HP, as well as...Strength and Luck. Oh well, at least he can hit things harder.
Anyway, I'm skipping all of the treasure on this floor. I mean, there's just gil, an antidote, and a potion. Not exactly cutting edge.
: Damn bats...damn maze...
Yes, this floor is a maze. With some good swag, even. Including a counterpart to the Wyrmkiller. Sounds cool, doesn't it?
I have some kind of fetish for large HIT numbers which Haste satisfies. Biggs is also killing the 132 HP, 14 Defense Ogre Chiefs in one hit. He may or may not have been doing it in the first place (which would defy all statistical meaning), but I don't care. Haaaaaaaaaaste.
Um.
Minotaurs boast 164 HP, and 22 Attack and 8 Defense. Trolls are much worse: they can chain 3 attacks, and boasts a higher HP count (184), as well as greater physical attributes. They are, however, weak to fire attacks.
...
...this place.
I'm now fleeing from every battle to conserve MP. The boss won't use a lot of it, but using all of Miki's MP will have disastrous consequences.
After more battles, I come across the sword I was looking for.
It has the exact same stats as the Wyrmkiller, except this time it excels at butchering aquatic foes. I give it to Lola out of pity.
The other chests in the room have a Tent and 330 gil. There's more loot on the level, but MP.
Having gotten the most worthwhile treasure on the floor, we exit the room and go almost directly south.
The boss is down these stairs!
Haha, just kidding. Floors with only the boss on it didn't exist until Final Fantasy II.
Hello, treasure!
This is almost a full level 5 spell.
Heck, even if we just get this and the money from the Vampire and nothing else, we'll be able to get, like, four spells. Four spells is a good amount.
Welp. You remember Piscodemons, right?
Even if you don't, they're horrible, but Lola can one shot 'em with his fancy Coral Sword, so it's not a problem. Yay!
The whole floor is basically a loop to the center where you fight the vampire. It's very time-consuming.
Oh! Did I mention that you have to go through here twice? Even more if you found out there was treasure you wanted? Yep.
This is going to be fun.
Oh! Did I also tell you that you have to claw your way back out of the dungeon? 'Cause you do. Fun.
This is also literally the only dungeon where you have to do this - every other place you can have Exit or a natural way to warp out of the dungeon. I guess you can have Warp, but that brings you up only one floor at a time, and thus you have to not run out of MP.
You also still have to have Magic Level 5 activated, which I didn't at the time I was in Melmond.
That door has nothing in it.
This door has a chest guarded by an earth elemental. They hit hard and have the most HP of anything in the cave. Thankfully, earth-aligned beings are weak to fire magic because ?.
One whack from the earth elemental makes Biggs down for the count. Yep. This'll be fun.
Anyway, besides the loss in Biggsitude, the Elemental is slain, and we get...
...
Not worth it.
Anyway, we're here. At the boss.
The seal cannot be broken, and so the earth shall rot.
Mere mortals cannot kill the undying!
: ...
: ...what?
: I dunno, usually Biggs would say a snarky line or something right about now.
: Well, he is kind of dead.
: Shut up.
VERSUS: THE VAMPIRE!
Honestly, I'm kind of on edge about his "boss" description. "Glorified fixed encounter" might suit him better. Why? See, he has all of 280 HP. This is even worse in the NES version, where he didn't even have 200.
If being a vampire didn't tip you off, he's an undead, so he gets hit by Dia and has a weakness to Fire. Of course, Miki is near out of MP, so we'll have to make do with Lola's two uses of Fira he has left. Honestly, it should be enough.
See? Lola could easily finish this by himself. Orko and Miki are just icing on the cake.
Biggs is the stuff you were going to decorate the cake with but through a lack of carefulness your dog got to it and now you can't use it.
Delegated to using Blizzard spells still lets Orko help in this round; this is around 100 damage, meaning we can kick the Vampire's ass within the next round or two.
I used Blizzard because I thought the Vampire resisted Thunder. He doesn't, so.
The Vampire has Gaze, which is being conveyed with Miki swinging her hammer over a bent-down Lola with the only indication that he's been paralyzed being his hunched-overness and the fact that his name has been replaced by "Paralysis".
Also he regens 14 HP a turn. Also his physicals hurt ow ow ow.
See, this is why, when your thief dies, you backtrack to the surface, no matter how painful it is. The battle that comes will probably be worse.
Thankfully, though, while Lola is dead,
Orko finishes the battle with style.
And 8 MP. The way up's gonna be fun.
The original Final Fantasy engine, for whatever reason, didn't have item drops. Thus, what you got for defeating the vampire, the Star Ruby, was in a completely missable chest.
So yeah.
Next time: Miki and Orko get mutilated. Maybe.
Also the text box thing and the preview thing are horribly inconsistent.

O_O You actually updated this again!
Aaaaaaaaaaaand I just realized something.... My FF save is on my other computer, and since I won't be using that much (if ever) anymore, I'm probably going to have to start a new game (that is, when I feel like playing FF again).
Aaaaaaaaand now that I think about it, my Fire Red save is also on the old computer....

Hey, actual LPers (or at least, the people on the Archives) can be just as inconsistent.

Re: Crystals! Swords! Job Classes! THIS IS FINAL FANTASY I!
Chapter 9 - The hell-spawned beast
- Or something:
- Last time, Biggs died for what might just be the 2nd or 3rd time, and Lola died for what might have been the millionth. Also we killed some vampire and got a ruby or whatever.
Now, Miki and Orko are heading out of the cave with low MP. I'm not going to describe it, because it's mostly resetting and swearing.
Well, except fuck Piscodemons. Fuck them with a rusty dagger.
Oh, and these guys. They're Cockatrices. These guys have pitiful attack - only being able to do 1 damage to Miki - but make up for it by having a chance to Petrify on attack. Petrify, in case I haven't explained it before, is basically death, except your current HP total isn't 0 and there's a different cure item (Soft/Golden Needle).
Also, when you're running for your life and have but two party members, you gain a new appritiation for the Luck stat - its sole purpose is for running away. Miki has but 11 of it, meaning it will be rather hard - the formula for running is
Interestingly, this means that if you level up but don't get a lot of Luck levels, you'll get worse at running away.
Also, Orko got stoned from the last battle. Thank god for seperate save files.
: My very existence is pain.
Thank god we looted those cottages. I don't think Miki could make it back otherwise.
Unfortunately, unlike every other Final Fantasy game that has these, Cottages (like Inns) don't restore statuses or revive party members, so Miki's still lugging the dead bodies of the three men in her party.
There, you can say that Final Fantasy is not sexist.
The running away from enemies she can easily beat is less of "women can't do anything on their own" and more "I don't want the EXP to become even father apart then it is now".
Of course, having all the gil in the world means nothing if you don't have the proper magic level. Have I mentioned how much I hate this thing?
Of course, as Miki lacks the proper magic level to use Raise, and Melmond doesn't have a church or an item shop, so we'll have to go to Elfheim.
In other news, fuck Melmond.
Having two enemies that can paralyze when you only have one character is death. Shocking, right?
Funnily enough, even though Lola is a level ahead of Biggs due to the Biggs Casualty Law (anytime Biggs dies, everyone else will gain a level), he has the same revival cost. I'm not complaining, obviously.
Don't ask me why I didn't get Blizzara or even Blizzard for Lola. I'm pretty sure I'm saving the spell slot for a White Magic that he can get on promotion. Anyway, Lola got Haste, bumping up his awesomeness by 50%.
Anyway, grinding.
Bah.
...wait, why am I wasting my time with this? I know the perfect place to gri - wait...
I'm good.
Y'know, Lola, even if you aced all four hits, you'd do less damage then Biggs, a thief, is doing. And you're the one holding the effective weapon and you have more attack with it then Biggs does.
I know you're supposed to be the "jack of all trades, master of none", but could you at least deal more damage when you have the effective weapon?
HALL OF THE GIGAS, BITCHES!
...y'know, I'm probably being very confusing right now. I first said "don't go in here" and now I'm going in here for grinding. Be cautious, maybe? Yeah, probably. Remember, all of the tiles at the end of the hallway trigger an encounter with the gigases.
Hey cool that didn't even take that lo -
...
...
Eh, at least I can get two spells.
Yes! Now I don't have to waste my time getting out of a cave and going to Elfheim to revive my guys! As long as Miki isn't dead, but she has, what, 280 HP?
Oh, and as long as she has at least 20 MP. Probably more to cover for the fact you have 1 HP when you're revived.
...
Oh, hey, turns out you can't have Teleport anyway because Black Mages can't learn it for no reason other then to make getting to the Lich extremely time-consuming. Goddammit.
So I guess we'll get Firaga, if only to make the upcoming boss even more of a joke.
So, hey, remember that cave where there was a not-cool Titan trying to be Gandalf?
Well first, though certainly not what I intended, is this guy. A Lesser Tiger. The most notable thing I can say about him is that he sometimes drops X-Potions, which give you full HP. They're a godsend in a Solo-Thief Challenge, but they're really rare. Other then that they're kinda shit and give shit rewards.
: Give me star ruby and I let you pass!
: Aw man, I wanted to sell this.
: But it's a key item.
: ...fair point.
: *crunch* *munch* Mmm! Ain't nothing tastier then rubies!
: ...are you now Texan.
And with that, Titan crosses over the rocks and disappears into the ether, to appear in a game where he isn't such a dick.
: ...That was weird.
: Railroading!
Hyenadons are completely unnotable.
You might notice that we're using the plains background. This means that we're back on the world map. More importantly, Squaresoft has continued showing its fetish for long, winding pathways that shouldn't be that long, akin to my fetish for big things (like boobs or asses or hit numbers).
Even more importantly, we've reached our next destination.
...you can read.
I mean, if you couldn't, then you can't say "No, I can't read" because you'd have to know I said you can read.
Hell, if you can't read, why are you ev - natch, how are you even on here? Illiteracy is common among people who don't have computers.
why does the sage have a room full of pots there's nothing in them
I mean, I guess you could use a library computer, but those are usually used for things that aren't looking at an internet forum. Like, research. Then again, I am just wasting characters because you can't read this, person I'm ranting to.
Oh hey look, sage.
Y'know, your name was Sarda in the NES version. That sounds a lot less stupid then "Sadda".
: Er, yeah. Why?
: He was only a servant... The beast corrupting the Earth Crystal lurks far deeper in the cavern.
: Ffffffffffffffffffffff
: uuuuuuuuuuuuuu
: Darrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
: uuuuuuuuuuuuuu - wait, what am I complaining about? I had the least trouble getting through the - oh right, stoned.
: Here. Take this staff with you and use it behind the vampire's chamber!
You know, it's really hard to not think of Biggs as some sort of bizzaro-Link, what with the fact that he holds items he holds above his head (presumably) and victory music plays. Also how he looks like him.
Anyway, that's all we came here for. Next time: more Cavern of the Earth and finally relighting a crystal!

Re: Crystals! Swords! Job Classes! THIS IS FINAL FANTASY I!
Chapter 10 - The Bane of Earth
- ...what?:
- So, last time, we confirmed that Squaresoft had a fetish for long, winding pathways and got a key item that let us go deeper into the cavern and kill the sumbitch who's doing this.
Let's roll.
I get Healara because I have a feeling that Cura-level healing to everyone will be more helpful then better healing to one person.
Marth, your sword sucks.
...
...we're going.
You've all seen the first few floors of the Cavern before, so I don't have to show you them.
Behold, the power of Life! Takes out tedious backtracking, at the cost of at least 10.52% of Miki's mana reserves.
I miss Save Points.
I mean, Biggs is just eating up valuable MP now. If there were Save Points, I wouldn't have to worry, because I could just pop up a Tent and rest to recover MP.
Not helping any is the fact that Raise only restores 1 HP.
Aaaaaaaand here's where things become sort-of different! This plate prevents us from going lower; hence why we needed the Earth Staff.
And we're in.
The fourth floor, like the second floor, has a lot of swag lying around. Most of it is gil, with one treasure being outdated stuff, another being stuff we can't use (because, again, we lack a warrior), or something I already have 19 of. There's a lot of gil, but it's not exactly something I need, given that you get gil from every encounter. This isn't exactly Final Fantasy XII.
Hahahaha fuck no. Thank god this was a preemptive strike.
The game seems to be trying to make up for the lack of the "Biggs not dying" earlier. I mean, yeah, he's in the first slot, which gets targeted the most, but every attack was aimed for him.
Wraiths, in case I forgot to tell you, also are legitimately threatening as they have Add: Paralyze on their attacks.
The worst thing about Final Fantasy I is that healing spells don't get retargeted if the target dies, rather then the spell being redirected to a living party member. The spell is still cast, though, meaning it's just a waste of MP.
I mean, it's better then all actions not being retargeted, but still. MP is a finite resource.
Overall, just head in a mostly northwesterly direction and you'll end up at the staircase.
Now to go kill the Lich!
Nope. Again, the actual boss is at the end of a long path. Unlike with the Vampire though, it's pure enemy filler, with no swag to show for its efforts. This game kind of reminds me of Mega Man 1: there's enemies in the room before the boss, something that was (mostly, at least) removed from the sequels.
The difference, of course, is that Mega Man 2 is actually relatively easy (Metal Blades), while Final Fantasy II is pure hatred filtered into a cartridge.
Huh, we're here already.
: Show yourself, fiend!
: You really think an ultimate evil is going to respond to that?
: Huh.
: I shall not be disturbed by mortal man. I am the lich... Fiend of Earth!
: Pretty big talk for a pile of bones.
: Yeah, I bet he doesn't have anything to back up the meat of his talk!
:
VERSUS: THE LICH!
(battle music (spoiler-ish thing as the picture, but it's just the Water Fiend)
Ah, the lich. He's our first real boss. In the original NES version, he had but 400 HP. This was tripled for the GBA release (probably to make up for the fact that we didn't just have a few charges for magic), but his magic defense didn't, so magic is just as effective. Being undead, he's weak to Fire and can be hit by Dia-type spells.
This fight is also hell if you're trying to do a solo-Thief challenge. Hell.
Namely because you lack magic.
This is the damage he's pumping out with Haste, for example.
Diara isn't fairing much better.
Firaga, on the other hand...
That's about a sixth of his health right there. Orko might not have enough MP for six shots, but other characters are contributing, so...
The Lich has a physical that hurts. Being only one hit, Slow won't help you against it.
Healara is pretty good, but it costs 25 whole MP.
...why is Biggs recovering 8 more health then Orko?
The lich was a black mage in his past life; hence, he has an array of Black Magic abilities, like Blizzara and Hold.
Also, I missed it, but Biggs was doing around 200 damage with his attacks. Haste + Temper is a lovely thing - attack-raising spells amplify damage more here because you hit more then once.
Then Orko one-upped him and killed the Lich (again). Whew.
: Guess death came twice for him.
: ...I don't think that was a pun.
: Damn it.
That's...a lot of coinage. He also dropped 550 EXP, but that's not nearly notable enough.
With the earth crystal shard thing raised to the earth crystal (I don't know),
We have relit the earth crystal.
: Guess this diamond's shinin' again.
: Dude, just stop.
Meanwhile...
The statue disappears. It was actually a cool-ish cutscene, but I forgot to capture any good parts. Alas.
More importantly, relighting the earth crystal gets us this little thing on our screen. I have no idea why it's second, when the earth crystal has to be cleared first, but whatever.
Next time...well, it depends! We can go get a canoe and beat up the Fire Fiend, go get a canoe and clear the Ice Cavern and thus get an airship, or go get a canoe and clear the Tower of Trials. Vote!
...I'd add a poll up top but I don't know how.

Oh yeah, I forgot to post a semi-interesting glitch in the PSP version of Final Fantasy I: if you close the game while fighting the lich (or it crashes), then multiple liches spawn.
