Who to ditch?
Final Fantasy: The Adventures of Clan #42 (Tactics Advance 2)
Final Fantasy Tactics is a classic strategy RPG with an engaging story of love, betrayal, political intrigue, and stabbing.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is about kids wishing away problems like albinism. And some armored guy on a ostrich telling you that you can't use a spear today for no adequate reason.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is about kids wishing away problems like albinism. And some armored guy on a ostrich telling you that you can't use a spear today for no adequate reason.
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is about a troublemaker who's forced to clean up the library at the start of summer vacation because he screwed around so much during school and ends up in a world where he joins a mercenary group. Said is restricted by a armored guy with a sword telling you that you can't use something that would probably help you in the fight in exchange for being able to return from the grip of death and rewards at the end of the battle. And at least doesn't fuck around with bodies and take up a turn.
Much classier then Tactics Advance, I'm showing off this game in all of its glory.
First though, we need a few things:
- Our hero's name (and the name of the clan):
And which of the starting guys to boot:
- Hume:
Advantages: As the versatility bar makes of note, very well rounded and capable of being a good melee fighter, range attacker, or magick user. Also Ygro.
Disadvantages: They don't excel at any of those roles, however (not to say they aren't good; other races use those roles better). Although, contrary to what the bars state, I think that they're better at attack-type jobs, rather then magick jobs (although one of their classes can use both magick types...)
- Bangaa:
Advantages: As the stamina bar indicates, they excel at physical attacks. They can also make for good buffing units, and can cast Regen and Reraise on themselves in one job. Also can use spears, which can strike from two tiles away (and pierce two units or prevent some reaction abilities from activating.)
Disadvantages: Their ranged attacks leave something to be desired.
- Nu Mou:
Advantages: As the magick bar indicated, they are highly proficient at channeling Mist and using it to make fireballs and healing and manipulating time and the like.
Disadvantages: However, the way magick works makes it a bit tricky (in the beginning) for a nu mou to get his spells off and be effective at attacking, especially his higher-end ones. The innate squishiness of mages doesn't help them, either...
- Viera:
Advantages: Quick, which lets them get many turns, including the first. This is good, as while they're pretty good as both attackers and mages, they usually are better mages. Still good in the physical department, but given that they have access to Summoner and Red Mage... They're also very sexy.
Disadvantages: ...the closest thing I can think of is that they don't have as much stamina or magick as bangaa/nu mou...really, they're pretty good.
- Moogle, kupo!:
Advantages: Versatile, being able to be a knight, chocobo rider (who's abilities vary depending on the chocobo he's riding), and a good long range unit, being able to use magicks and guns.
Disadvantages: Bad at close range combat.
And which one of these two to induct as fighters (eventually):
- Gria:
Advantages: Durable and quick. Can also fly, being able to move to a tile of any height and go over enemies. And negate fall damage. And a cute monster girl.
Disadvantages: Not good at using long-range attacks, only having three. Better then the bangaa, though...
- Seeq:
Advantages: As their stamina bar would indicate, high strength and very durable. Can also screw people over with their Mirror Items technique.
Disadvantages: Slow, non-versatile, and ugly.
So, pitch your suggestions!

If you're talking about Gria and the seeq...well, I'd just prefer for there to be one.

I am referring to all of them collectively, you didn't make it clear how many we could choose.
That and I only just now noticed the poll asking how to ditch.

Yeah. The poll is for which one of them to eventually boot for the new race thing.

Name: Lief.
I voted on who to boot.
And definitely choose Gria!
Also, whatever you do, do NOT boot off Viera, even if she somehow gets the most votes!

At the moment it's a 3 way tie, got any idea how that's going to be settled if it stays like that?

Re: Final Fantasy: The Adventures of Clan #42 (Tactics Advance 2)
Chapter 1 - VS. Klesta!
- And so, their adventure begins...:
Starting a new game will give us a prompt for difficulty. I choose Normal because Hard's hard and might delay updates.
And before we even begin the game, we get a clan privilege: Libra! We could get this normally, but by downloading the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance ROM and plugging it into the theoretical SLOT 2, we get it. And before we (read: you) even know what clan privileges are!
: I'm out that door as soon as the teacher stops talking. Summer homework: keep a journal. That's not too bad. Better write my name in my notebook before I forget.
And so, our schoolboy hero is named Lief. Lief Clemens. ...eh, could be worse.
What is it with you guys and naming characters after me that fit me perfectly?
: And I can already guess what my first entry's going to be: "Summer vacation, Day 1: Aunt chewed me out. Grounded for a week."
Well, other then the standard "parents are dead" JRPG curse.
: Maybe this journal thing's not such a great idea after all. Oh, we got another assignment, due today: "My Summer Vacation". We're supposed to write our goals for the summer. Well, here goes...
...he's like 12-14, isn't this like a first grade assignment or something? Granted, we get another clan privilege from it based on our answers, but still... (also: I cannot spell privilege without looking at a source)
So, by saying we're going to hang out with our friends, get our warrior to level 75 (Lief plays Dragon Quest IX, so it's basically one and the same), and swear not to misbehave in class (among other combinations), we get AP Up 1. Not bad. (If you notice, you'll see someone like a character from the previous game.)
: I promise not to misbehave in class...Or at least get caught, hehe.
Well, with that, on we go!
Hey, Lief was making it up as he went along, like I did!
...I just realized we're both on our summer vacations. Only his is more interesting. D:
...just...like...me...
what the fuck it's like you guys planned this or something O_O
: But, I guess not having expectations isn't all bad. I mean, whatever ends up happening, it will be a surprise!
: Have a good summer. Class dismissed!
There is our hero, chatting with his friends, making summer plans (even during his one week of grounding). When they go to leave...
: Sorry, but your vacation doesn't start quite yet. Your friends are going home, but you're going straight to the library, young man.
: But c'mon, Mr. Blair! Why?
(If Mr. Blair's sprite seems bigger then Lief's, it's because I took it from Tactics Advance. See, Mr. Blair doesn't do enough to get a new sprite. The Tactics Advance teacher does, being the judge for the first fight. Heck, it's kind of a cleaned-up version of the old sprite...)
: Think about it.
: Mm...*shakes head* Done. I got nothing.
: Then let's take a trip down to memory lane...to this morning! When you were late to my class - How many times is it now?
: Forty-two.
: No, I'm pretty sure it was more then that. Like sixty-four.
: Nah, it was forty-two. I remember forty-one scoldings from my aunt. She wouldn't've missed the twenty-one extra times you brought up.
: ...anyway...Lief, you're not a bad student by any means. But, occasionally, you require a little...correction, shall we say. Which is why I've put you in charge of cleaning up the library. Maybe a little straightening out there will help you straighten out, too.
: Look, I see what you're trying to do here. But on the last day of school? You gotta be kidding! I mean, it's summer vacation!
It goes on like you'd expect...Lief has to go to the library. Which is good. Otherwise, we wouldn't have a game.
I think Lief also wishes Mr. Blair to have a good summer vacation...or he could be talking to his friends...but he was facing Mr. Blair, so...well, at least he isn't too against authority. Just when it gets in the way of his sweet, glorious freedom.
Mr. Randell isn't here, though...odd.
After looking around the library and checking the box on the table, our hero notices something...
Well, given some WMGs that the Tactics Advance series takes place long enough after the original Ivalice games for magick to be a myth (that I support)...it would probably be so, yes.
However...
After some cool pictures of warriors and mages fighting to the death, no doubt telling of ancient battles against the gods and their unholy spawn... it just stops.
The last page tends to be more fruitful, with the following words:
"One is fated to fill these barren pages. Know you his name?"
After commenting on the odd sentence structure of the sentence, Lief decides that he does know the one's name. Specifically, his.
It goes about as well as writing your name in a magickal tome thousands of years old could go.
Not well at all.
A Spanish cat-man-thing, bunny girl, and dog mage walk into a bar...(this is actually a pretty well rounded group of three; the problem is they could bring in more guys)
: Oi, oi. What have we here?
That. It's a giant chicken bird thing that has been marked. Specifically, the Spanish cat-man, bunny girl, and dog mage have been requested to defeat it.
: Why is it always the vicious ones that pay the worst...? 250 gil is barely enough to pay our time sweeping the feathers when we're done.
Specifically, they're part of a clan, a mercenary group that does stuff from getting tips in pubs. Whoever requested for them to slay this monstrosity was a dick and requested only three people to attack it, along with there being only mediorce pay.
Also, if you can manage it, imagine the Spanish cat-man speaking with a Spanish cat-like voice. If not, just imagine him speaking a very masculine Spanish voice.
: What, you hungry? Sorry, but I've got higher aspirations then being chicken feed.
Specifically, being the first bangaa-like Spanish cat-man warrior. It's going pretty well so far.
: Hop to it then!
The trio prepare for battle, when...
...our hero comes in from midair.
The cat-man takes advantage of this and asks for Lief to join his clan.
Given the other option, Lief accepts.
Lief accepts the oath of the clan, not knowing what it actually entails.
What it entails is him getting an awesome hat as well as a lot of accessories, as well as a sword. Luso is now officially a Soldier!
More little cockatrices join the crushatrice, and we battle!
The Spanish cat-man reveals to be this game's Cid, while Lief introduces himself as Lief. We battle.
The top screen begins to fill with information. The two most important things on there are the turn order (I dub it the "card list", as it looks like a bunch of cards) and what's currently showing, the law. It's no big deal now, as none of our characters can use ranged weapons.
The card list is shown, and thus the battle begins...sorta. Our White Mage bunny chick (there's a joke to be made there, I'm certain), Fidona (...what?!), explains the card list. Standard stuff: speedy guys move quickly and slow guys don't move a lot. After moving her, she basically tells us that using Move and not performing an action will net the character a turn quicker, while attacking and not moving also gets you the next action quicker, just not as quick. Not moving OR acting will mean your next turn comes even sooner, but then it's really just a waste of a turn.
Our dog mage, Ihsan (I prefer Jeol :I), tells us about actions. This is basically a tutorial to as how the magick system works:
The action screen is the same for everything. Magick, of course, costs MP; the elemental trio of Fire/Blizzard/Thunder costs 8 MP. Pretty nifty...but hey, why does Ihsan only have 10/40 MP? And why does Klesha have none?
See, each unit's MP starts at 0 and increases by 10 per turn (this can be increased). In turn, this makes max MP kind of redundant; it only really matters if you have enough max MP to eventually cast your best spell, and that's pretty much always. See how this works against mages, though, given that most of the good attacks cost more then 10 MP?
Also, Klesha is so big, he takes up a 3x3 grid. And pretty much can't move (but can fly...somehow...). While attacks from the back will be prevented via strategic placement (attacks from the back deal more damage; from the side, a little less so), this still allows your attackers to all wail on it and your mages (except for possibly summoners) able to cast without fear of hurting said attackers.
Cid is a guest, meaning he only fights in story battles where he needs to, and is controlled by the AI like the enemies (except on your side).
Also, I wasn't lying about Cid aspiring to be the first cat-man bangaa warrior. He is technically a bangaa in battle - he can't use special techs if the law says bangaas can't do it, and he uses their classes. So we're still technically using a bangaa. Just a less lizardy one.
Body Slam is a bangaa Warrior technique that hurts the foe more in exchange for some HP.
Alas, Lief's move isn't high enough to strike Klesta. The shame.
Waiting, however, does bring his next turn much faster; after a quick Cure from Fidona for Cid, Lief's ready to strike.
Being a level 1 soldier, the damage is pretty lackluster compared to Cid. Eh, it still works.
After a round from Ihsan and Cid (who decides to attack and...move away?), Klesta gets ready to strike:
Jesus christ, that's more then half of his HP! 250 gil for this?! (I mean, level 3 mages were going to fight it along with Cid. That's about the same on the scale. Not to mention there was just three of them.)
Thankfully, the little 'uns are stupid and attack Cid, allowing whats-her-name to heal up him and Lief.
Klesta also has an AoE attack. Cid should've gotten thrice the pay at the least.
Territorial Marking.
Lief Potions up (restoring a meager 30 HP) while Fidona continues working her magic and Cid does whatever the fuck he feels like doing, he's goddamn Cid! Or something.
Except that part about Fidona healing? Doesn't happen. See, Klesta has a nasty habit of fleeing whenever things get rough for her. This has been the ire of many in Ivalice, especially given that Klesta restores to full health by the time anybody sees her next (due to mechanics). Anyway, Lief comments that it wasn't so bad, Cid and Fidona angerily shake their fists, while Ihsan contemplates shooting it with a fireball or lightning bolt, but doesn't do it, considering by now the only way for it to be in range would require him being squished by it when landing.
Our non-guests gain EXP from the fight! As opposed to tactical RPG tradition (gaining EXP after every action depending on the level of the unit targeted), Tactics A2 (none of the previous games) gives EXP after a fight, traditional RPG-like (scaled to the targets, of course). Ihsan gets the most EXP probably because he did more to knock Klesta down to the point where she leaves.
Does anybody find this ironic? (Look at the law. Then look at me. Then back to the law. Then at the law bonus.)
Cid, at least, finds beating Klesta to the point of submission was enough for a mission clear (that and the completed screen showed up, so), and decides to celebrate by hooking up with the rest of the clan at the pub and getting a drink. Cid has questions for Lief (that and he is part of the clan, so), so he brings him along with him. Lief remembers he forgot his lunch. Cid laughs and says that we definitely need to hit the pub, naow. For food and drink, you see.
We also get our mission rewards and raises in our abilities. Clan Points (CP) is an alternate method of currency, used to complete clan trials to get more bonuses and stuff. Ability Points (AP) are used to permanetly use abilities - see, Ihsan and Fidona don't actually know their spells. They're learning them. From their weapons. In order to actually learn them, they need to get something like 100 AP.
Your next location is revealed by a blue exclamation mark. If it's plot important, it even appears on the world map. (Of course this isn't the world map; what kind of RPG only has four areas?!)
The six members of Clan whats-its-name gather in the pub for food and drink.
Cid sums up what Lief told him and we already knew.
Lief also uses the term "hume", the word for human in Ivalice. The word, like magick, has faded from use in the new days.
They then ponder how to find a way back, with Cid mentioning he will try to help the best he can. Lief then decides to make the best of it while he's here. He then goes off to greet his fellow clan mates...then realizes he doesn't know the name of the clan.
Just in case you decided you wanted a different name for the clan or something. Also it's near midnight and I shouldn't be awake and yet I am and not tired so
yeah
see ya

Re: Final Fantasy: The Adventures of Clan #42 (Tactics Advance 2)
Chapter 2 - Gwauuuuuuu, werewolves in Jylland...
- Meet the clan:
Cid reveals that the clan's name is #42, known only to few. Not because they're secretive, but because they're not famous...yet.
Lief introduces himself to his fellow clanmates. The clan members then tell Lief of exciting stories from before he came (that we can't hear of, sadly).
Cid then says that work's done for the day, as there's Lief's welcoming party. As in, beer and sodas and the like.
Look close to where the bartender is. There is a moogle. He may seem familiar. Just put him in the back of your mind for now.
And, after a short bit on how to move around, we can now check on our clanmates! Our fellow clanmates are Coryn the bangaa warrior (don't ask why they have two), Dumas the hume archer (what's with my hume archers and having inapporpriate names? Also, think of him as speaking with a French accent if able) and Rubay the moogle thief, in addition to Fidona, Ihsan, and Lief.
Each unit has three assignable abilities: a secondary Action ability (the first is the job's action ability, ala FFV), a Reaction ability (an ability that activates after an appopriate attack, or may even prevent some attacks from hitting), and a Passive ability (none too surprisingly, an ability that is always active for the unit). I change Lief into a White Mage so he can gt on the road to Blue Mage (jobs are unlocked by learning action abilities; Blue Mage is unlocked by learning a Black Magick ability, which is unlocked (for humes) by learning a White Magick ability).
With that, we head to the shop, as Lief only retains his stylish hat.
Except we have to go to the pub first to pick up our next story mission: A Paw Full of Feathers:
Killing wolves? Easy, peasy.
NOW we can go to the shop:
Gah, we can't access the bazaar! That's the main way of getting new items! ...grumble, grumble...
The fitting room returns from FFT, and allows us to directly try on new items and have them equipped when we leave:
Each equipment piece is grouped based on type - edged, bludgeon, and ranged for weapons, and helmets, body armor, and shields for armor. It shows its attack/how much it raises the unit's attack compared to its current weapon (buy/fitting room) and the abilities it teaches on the top screen, and flavor text and any special weapon-specific abilities. On Hit: Remove Doom is pretty useless, because who's going to be using this by the time we come across Doom?
Anyway, our main purchases are fancy hats for everybody and armor he can wear for Lief. We're near broke, now, so let's do that mission.
...and now the lady opens up the bazaar. Fuck you, lady.
Each piece of equipment you get is "made" from loot you get by beating up monsters (barring the first ones, which are shit). Each "equipment set" requires 2-3 pieces of loot to be made, from various loot groups. What you get is based on the loot you give - it's set, so you can't give random pieces of high-level loot to get the infinity+1 sword (if you could, Ygro would have Ultima Shot by now). Each piece of equipment is also ranked - E is the worst, A is the best. Some equipment sets (such as the one we have access to right now) -
Y'know what? Forget it. You don't need a long ass explanation for a mechanic you're not going to use. I'm playing the game, and I know how the thing works. All you know is that loot + loot + usually more loot = new equipment and abilities.
Giving up a chunk of lead and some pollen lets us use a sword that gives a Soldier and Warrior ability that Coryn already has, I believe. ? (It also will eventually be able to give Vieras some ability. )
You can also sell loot, but it usually doesn't sell for much without being a component in awesome-ass equipment.
Chocobos! They're monster types and can be riden by a moogle class.
Lief comments that they're cute.
Cid...isn't so eager to be with the chocobos.
But wait, weren't we here to kill wolves?
Ah.
Lief directs the chocobos away, and we battle with the wolves and the baknamy (the thing on the right)!
First, we get all of our teammates out on the field. Except Corynen. Cid's here, so he can't fight.
As you can see, the Judge banned Fire attacks. Using any attack that's fire elemental, whether it's an ability like Fire or an attack with a fire-imbued weapon, will break the law. What will breaking the law do, you ask? Well, it prevents teammates from being revived...
...as well as revokes the bonus the judge gives us (and the after-fight bonus items, too). That's the clan privilege I was talking about earlier. What we'll use is Bonus AP 1, which increases the amount of AP we get from this battle by 20 as long as we don't break the law. As storyline battles give 80 AP, this means Lief can become a Blue Mage in two story battles if Ihsan doesn't cast Fire.
Wolves are weak to water and resist earth. We have maybe one source of water damage right now (the Blue Mage's sabers are ((mostly, the first one might be the exception)) water-elemental) and none of earth, so.
The pretty-much-first Archer ability is Focus. As FF fans might know, it increases attack power for the next strike. Dumas also comes with Arts of War, which, combined with his bow, might not be so bad if he didn't only have First Aid. Alas, he only gets the ability to heal himself minorly and remove some statuses.
Rubay gets a Opportunity Command. This allows him to do various things based on what units are surrounding him.
Flurry! is the command when an enemy unit is the only adjacent unit. It strikes said enemy twice. It's honestly the only useful "surrounded by enemies" command as I can't think of any abilities that strike an enemy twice off of the top of my hat, but there's at least two abilities that strike the enemies around you (which is what the other "surrounded by enemies" commands do).
They also raise the power of some weapons and armors :D
And so Rubay knocks the wolf into critical health with his two strikes. Well done, son guy.
: I can be pretty fierce when I set my mind to it, kupo!
Yeah, they do that. Each generic race has one, and all of the special units have one of their own, too. (Except for the enemies, of course. They can't use 'em. Ha!)
Goblin Attack is a baknamy ability that, if I remember, ignores any defense added on by armor (or maybe just ignores defense completely, which is why it can't be learned by a blue mage ). Cid doesn't take his shit.
Destroying enemies is the main source of loot. Here, we get a wolf pelt.
Ihsan kills the other wolf after a combo of his, Rubay's, and Dumas' attacks. This brings Ihsan's leave-the-battle total to 3.
Then he brings his actual kill total to 3. (Remember, Klesta didn't die, she just fled; Ihsan just landed the blow that made her flee.)
It is then I realize that Ihsan used Fire, which would break the law, meaning Lief needs another battle to become a blue mage...that is, if it didn't end the fight. Yeah, using a law-breaking move that finishes the battle (or doing something on the turn that finishes the battle) doesn't have the judge punish you. I don't know why, but I certainly ain't complaining.
With that, the quest is complete.
Everybody that was in the first battle levels up.
And we get judgly rewards for only using Fire to end the battle. (Our judge is nice like that.)
: And a good day to quest. All we need do now is to collect our pay. *turns to face Lief* So, I think you understand well enough what it is we do. You might keep an eye out for quests that promise to lead towards home.
(All of them have no time limit: spoiler)
: Home...right. It's all tied up in that book with blank pages...Figure that book out, and I'll find my way back.
: The magick book, yes.
: *nods* I just wish I had been paying more attention to the thing...I remember it was old, real old. The cover was all faded. I didn't even see what it was called.
(The Gran Grimore, if certain things are true. ...it's not really much of a spoiler...if at all...)
: The question is, who wrote it, where, and for what reason? ...three questions, actually. Hrm? Don't tell me you carry a journal around, Lief.
: Huh? A journal? *reaches into side satchel thing and takes out...a journal* Hey, it's a journal. I assumed it was some kind of belt, or a tool pouch.
: You mean...that's not yours?
: Of course not. You saw me before I became a soldier. Did it look like I had a journal on me?
: Fair point.
: Besides, do I look like the type to keep a journal?
: That you do not.
The journal is added to the top screen.
: What is it? Has it been written in?
: (beat) Look at this, Cid! This journal talks about me at the library...and coming to Ivalice, and getting rescued...Everything I've done is in here!
: Ah, so you do keep a journal!
*flash of light*
It's an auto-updating journal. We can't actually read any of it (though it would be cool if there was a record feature for story battles...alas, you need a video camera or aTube for that). It mostly exists to show you how close you are to finishing the story.
: Ah, it's recording the fight with the wolves.
: A magick journal?
: Yet another surprise. You're full of them, aren't you.
: You think this magick journal's got anything to do with that book?
: Possibly...no, it's certain. You've just found your first clue.
(Cid understands how this JSPRG shit works.)
: That wasn't so hard. *puts magick journal away* So, who would know about a magick journal? Maybe a wizard? What if I can find a quest that'd take me to one?
: That's it! Cid, let's get back to town and check out the lists at the pub!
(Lief does too.)
: *nods*
And so the duo heads back to town...
In particular, everybody except Rubay mastered the ability he/she was learning. AP is given even to clan members not participating in battle, see.
I switched the jobs of Ihsan and Lief to White Mage and Black Mage, respectively. Of note, when Ihsan masters Cure, he'll be 2/3rds of the way to Sage. (Sages are awesome.)
So, that's it for now. Next time: story quest so Lief can be a mage of blue!
- Total kills:
- Ihsan: 3
Lief Katano- : If I had a gil for all the fiends...
