Let's Play Final Fantasy IV

Hello all and welcome to my first play of a Role Playing Game! I would put up a nice fancy picture like in my previous let's play, but I have neither the time, nor the knowledge to make a fitting one as I don't know very much about Final Fantasy. Although I have access to a wiki, I am going to try to avoid using it. So really the only other thing left to do is give the highly optimistic scheduling that is never ever kept to!
And with that out of the way, onto the first post!

- It'll be whenever I get time. Over the next week or two, it won't be a problem. Once school begins for me, it still shouldn't be a problem. Why? Because based up the previous year of Automotive Technology, there was almost no homework. Instead what is going to be taking up most of my free time is the Robotics Club. Hopefully it won't be as bad as it was last year where I was tied down for weeks on end, but I can make no promises that I'll be able to regularly post updates.
And with that out of the way, onto the first post!
- Part 1: A whole new land!:
- The Game's Long Intro:
"The advent of the airship marked the realization of mankind's dreams, but also sowed the seeds of corruption."
At first I was all like airships have been around for a long time, though they've been somewhat unpopular when Hydrogen was found to explosive, then later in the intro I realize that they meant actual flying ships. Not sure how that works in universe, but I suspect that I may have to fix one.
Anyway, moving on. I don't have much time tonight (11:40 right now) so I should be able to pick my characters and name them and that'll be pretty much it.
Or not? I dunno what's happening here... Apart from we're flying over a land with intermittent shadows appearing beneath us.
The ship is powered by walking soliders? Also I must say this music is really majestic. Reminds me of Hoenn... *irl tear*
My Soul Reaper status carried over into this game? Cool. But why am I travelling with an entourage to Baron?
My name is Cecil? Also why is my face covered in this sprite while my overworld sprite has a visible face? Also this control configuration is awkward... >.<
What!?! I'm perfectically fine, just sleep deprived!
Eh? Something's up...
Oh... That seems pretty unheroic, this Cecil person must not be me then...
Flashback!
They just slaughtered those guys.... I'm kinda dreading these soilders now... And took that blue cystral.
Aww.. Flashback is over...
And somebody apparently needs to be taught a lesson in obeidence! Unfortunately some people must die to protect the rest.

To keep down the loading time of this update, long speeches like this are gonna be put in quotes after the first lines.His Majesty and his council concluded that the Mysidians, and their broad knowledge of the Crystals, posed a serious threat to our kingdom. For Baron to prosper, we need the Crystals. As soldiers of the Royal Air Force, we must achieve this by whatever means necessary.
Spoken like a true leader. I think.
I'm not gonna have to take you downstairs am I?
What!?! I'm guessing it's gonna be a tutorial. I need one anyway, but I don't have the time to...
So that'll be reserved for tomorrow. Until then, wonder how badly I will screw this up!

Also, yeah, Final Fantasy IV is where FF started majorly putting the distance between player and character, though it started a bit with FFII. Cecil is Lord Captain of the Red Wings of Baron, which basically means "he's a badass".
- Well, minor spoiler, and it isn't even really a spoiler!:
- The first battle is completely scripted. Cecil uses an item, the item kills the monsters, battle end. It isn't in the DS version, but guess which version you're not playing? A better tutorial is "bar fills up, you can attack, enemies don't give a shit about what you're doing and will attack as soon as their invisible bar fills up".

Well I think my Let's Play has a PG-13 rating at the least.
- Part 3: Sucking It Up:
I don't like this, but I'm gonna deal with it for now because the game is interesting enough to keep my going. In the meantime, you guys get to enjoy screenshots to the size that I play the game. Though some of guys may notice I'm not taking my time when I'm cropping my screenshots.

I presume the aforementioned king lives here.

Also the music has changed. It's not as majestic as the other track though...
Whose this fancy dressed fellow? Is he the king?
His name is apparently Baigan. I don't know if he's the king or not. They've probably already told me but I've forgotten already.
Cecil: The Mysidians put up no resistance. In fact, they were completely helpless.
I highly dispute lack of resistance as meaning completely helpless. Putting up no resistance has proven to be one of the most effective tactics in civil rights because it makes the goverment look bad for beating up an old man.
Baigan: Is this pity I perceive? Hmph? Come, Captain. His Majesty awaits.
So apparently he wasn't the king...
So that's what you say to me after dragging me through the castle. :I
Actually a nicely detailed castle too.
Oh wow, I never expected that I would be allowed in on such private matters. I thought was I was either just gonna be able to walk around the room or he would come right back through the door.
King: I suspected as much. It matters not, so long as I obtain the Crystals. Send him in.
Baigan: Yes, Your Majesty.
*Baigan walks over to the door*
Baigan: Captain! His Majesty summons you.
*Cecil walks to the King*
King: The Kingdom of Baron hails your return. May I have the Crystal?
I just want to stop for a moment to comment on the situation. I find that discussing Cecil's trustworthiness with him in the previous room is a bad move in the event that he's listening. Also the way the King is asking for the Crystal is setting off alarm bells in my head. It just doesn't feel right...
Cecil: Yes, Your Majesty.
*Cecil gives the Water Crystal to Baigan*
King: So this is the Crystal. What splendor... You are dismissed, Cecil.
*Cecil goes to the door, then pauses and runs back to the King*
Cecil: Your Majesty!
*everyone but Cecil spins in a circle, apparently shocked*
King: Yes?
Baigan: Captain, what is it?
Cecil: Your Majesty, forgive me, but what are your intentions? My men are confused and displeased.
King: And you? Do you question my command?
Cecil: No! I only ask...
King: Silence! Dissension only leads to treason, and that I will not tolerate. I hereby relieve you of your command of the Red Wings.
Cecil: Your Majesty!
*Cecil is pushed back by the King's guards, who have come running over*
King: Now, I charge you with another duty. Slay the phantom beat that infests Mist Valley, and deliver this Bomb Ring to the village of Mist. You leave tomorrow, at first light.
Whose is this guy? He's got a text box sprite so I'm guessing he's very important.
Kain: Cecil has done no wrong.
*the guards push both Cecil and Kain to the door while the King and Baigan angerly storm after them*
King: You insolent cur! How dare you barge in here! If you are so concerned about him, you may accompany him! Now, take the ring and begone!
Cecil: Your Majesty!
*both Kain and Cecil are shoved out the door*

Kain: Once we have completed the mission, the king is bound to forgive us both. You will rejoin the Red Wings in no time.
Cecil: ...
Kain: Get some rest. Leave tomorrow's preparations to me.
*Kain leaves to the right*
Wow, that whole thing was intense...
So what now?
*waits, but nothing happens*
*hits WASD experimently, but nothing happens*
*hits my arrow keys, moving Cecil about*
OMG, I'VE GOT CONTROL
God he walks fast...
*goes to the left*
Dead end, but maybe I can talk to these guys.
Lower Dude: Whatever others may say, I trust the king.
Upper Dude: His Majesty is acting very strange lately.
Well there you have it, a loyalist and the next guy to get fired.
*goes back into the main room and talks to the guards*
Left Guard: I've heard rather disturbing rumors regarding the king lately.
Right Guard: It's best to suppress any disloyal thoughts if you wish to survive these times.
Even his own guards don't trust the King completely... That's bad.
*goes into the right room*
There's Kain, but who are these two?
Left Dude: Mist Valley is northwest of Baron.
Right Dude: With you and our master Kain joining forces, nothing will be able to stop you.
I'm beginning to suspect this mission is supposed to kill both me and Kain.
*talks to Kain*
Kain: What's wrong?
Cecil: ...I'm sorry to have dragged you into this.
Kain: My actions are my own.
Cecil: I mastered the dark sword at his Majesty's orders. But it was to protect Baron, not to plunder.
Kain: Surely the king has his reasons.
Cecil: I envy you, Kain, I envy the path you chose.
Kain: I suppose I could have attained a higher rank, had I become a dark knight. My father, who passed away when I was still young, was a dragoon. I felt that I could keep some sort of connection with him if I became a dragoon as well.
Cecil: ...
Kain: I didn't mean to bore you with my stories. Anyway, I don't need your concern. The only thing you should be concerned about is slaying creatures tomorrow. I don't want to be the only one doing his part.
Cecil: Oh, I will, I'll slay twice as many as you!
Kain: That's more like it. We should get some rest. We rise early tomorrow.
That was a long conversation that revealed that I'm a dark knight.
I like that. I really do. So where's my sword?
*Attempts to go through what seems like a door on the back wall*
Apparently not a door.
*heads back to the main room and down the stairs*
Oh wow... I don't have time to explain all of this in detail... so I'll just post what I find notable.
So down the flight of stairs on the right is
*learns that I apparently have a girlfriend named Rosa, who became a White Mage to help me*
Another person in the room describes the four levels of healing.
Well I guess that's reasonable to have this on the left flight of stairs.
*is attacked by one of the guys*
Fuck, you. :I
I am told that this is a secret door. And that I can help myself to anything I want in the secret room.
*finds 480 gil, Ether, and Tent*
All of those sound useful to me.
*finds my way out on the roof and heads down into a courtyard*
OH FUCK HELP ME THIS IS PROBABLY GONNA BE REALLY BAD!

Cecil: We're fine. I wish I could say the same for the Mysidians we slaughtered...
*Cecil attempts to walk away, but Rosa purses*
Rosa: Cecil!
*Cecil turns*
Rosa: I'll visit you later, okay?
Cecil: Very well...I'm wondering if this means they're gonna have sex off-screen
*finds the dungeons*
I thought we slaughtered them all.
They are just mad at me or just want us to return the Crystal.
Who what where!?!
Whose this guy with the epic beard?
Cid: So, how are my airships? I'll bet you and your goons wrecked them up something awful. Hey, what's the matter with you, kiddo?
Cecil: Well...
Cid: What!? The king demoted you? What about the Red Wings? They'll be a mess without you! What's come over the king? He's been acting peculiar. He ordered me to build an airship that he use to slaughter people! Everyone's worried about his Majesty... Anyhoo, be careful out there! Make short work of that mission and get back safe. ...Whoa, I have to start heading home, or my daughter's going to kill me!
That guy talks a lot... but seems cool. Also apparently I'm hard on equipment :hmmm:
*continues exploring the castle*
Oh, it looks like I found my bed. Also I apparently have a maid who just changed my sheets.
*Cecil starts a soliloquy*
Cecil: What's happened to the king? He covets the Crystals as though he's possessed. And he'll resort to any means to get them. Nevertheless, I can't defy him. How could I cross the man who raised Kain and me like his very own? The chivalrous knight whom I've adored and admired since childhood? I will not betray him. I can't.
*as Cecil falls back to sleep, Rosa comes in*
Rosa: Cecil! What's going on? You just returned from Mysidia, and now you must journey afar to battle this phantom beast? You're acting very strange.
Cecil: ...Nothing's wrong. Everything's fine.
Rosa: Cecil, look at me.
Cecil: *without turning to look at her* ...In Mysidia, we killed innocent people to steal their Crystal. It was horrible. I suppose this is my fate as a dark knight. Soon, I won't even feel remorse for my actions.
Rosa: You and I both know that would never happen.
Cecil: Still, I can't defy the king... I'm a hopeless coward.
Rosa: The Cecil I know would never whimper like this! The Cecil I love... *pause during which Cecil rolls over to look at her while she has her back to him* You leave for Mist early tomorrow, right?
Cecil: *gets out of bed* Yes, but don't worry. Kain's coming too. I'll be fine. Trust me.
Rosa: Please come back to me in one piece.
*Rosa leaves*
Apparently no sexy action tonight.
*hits z and discovers Cecil has more to say*
Cecil: Though as a dark knight, you know we can never be together.
And that's when it all fades to black. I'm extremely impressed with the story thus far and I've barely done anything. So I'll post this, and then... do something. I'll figure something out when I get there.

Alright, so! I'm going to be doing a thing called a "Character Primer", which is basically a rundown on the characters TS currently has in his party (Cecil and Kain...well, okay, Kain's not officially in the party yet, but he will be). It's mostly on "what they and their abilities do" rather then anything story-related, so uh.
Also I'm doing this entirely without TS's permission.

- Character Primer - Cecil:
Command Abilities:
- Attack
- Darkness
- Item
Equipment: Dark Swords, Dark Armor
Cecil's stats are made for his calling: he wrecks stuff physically and can take a beating. Unfortunately, his magic defense and spirit (which helps determine magical damage taken) are awful. In fact, level him up enough, and his spirit starts decreasing! (This type of thing is not unique to Cecil.)
His special ability, Darkness, allows him to attack all enemies, at a rate around his normal attack (maybe a bit more...?). Such an awesome ability comes at a price, and that is an eighth of Cecil's max HP. It also deals, for whatever reason, non-elemental damage, contrasting to Cecil's attacks, which are dark-elemental. I'm not entirely certain on what difference it makes.
Cecil is also unique in that he can't equip universal equips, only Dark Knight-specific gear.
- Character Primer - Kain:
Command List:
- Attack
- Jump
- Item
Equipment: Spears, Swords, Heavy Armor
Kain, like Cecil, is a physical attacker. He trades strength and vitality for agility, which honestly helps him a bit more defense-wise. His highest stat, at least initially, is spirit, which also helps him defensively. Which is kinda sad, because his ability should make him not a target.
Jump allows Kain to...jump...up into the atmosphere and wait a bit. Then he slams down into the enemy. This takes a bit and is thus more useful against bosses, really. Jump deals more damage with spears and thus if you plan to Jump often, keep Kain equipped with a spear.

Your definition of playing blind is "pushing all of the command buttons and seeing what happens", isn't it.
