Love! Betrayal! Political Intrigue! A weird translation! FINAL FANTASY TACTICS!
A warrior takes sword in hand,
clasping a gem to his heart.
Engraving vanishing memories into the sword,
He places finely honed skills into the stone.
Spoken from the sword, handed down from the stone...
Now the story can be told...
Final Fantasy Tactics has all of the things listed in the title and more. Corrupted churches, for example. It's a good game. A few years back, it got rereleased on the PlayStation Portable as The War of the Lions with a better translation and a few new battles. This, however, is the original version.
Let's roll.
Anyway, we're also going to need some names for Ramza and the other units we shall be getting. We start out with units, but that's no fun - Largeness:
- First, we need a name for the main player character. By default, his name is Ramza, as shown. We also need to select his birthday. In most games, having a birthday isn't really a big deal, but here? It is.See, Ivalice revolves around the zodiac signs (at least in XII and Tactics it did). They do enough to influence your effect in battle, as shown here:
- Spoiler:
Complicated, right? Each sign relationship has four values. "Good" means rates - damage, hit, etcetera - are increased by 25% for both people. "Bad" means each unit suffers a 25% rate reduction. Max/Min means that both units get a 50% increase or decrease depending on gender - same means it plummets, while opposite means it skyrockets. Monsters are treated as same-gender.A large amount of bosses in the game are Virgos, by the by - including two of the more notorious ones and the final boss. Meaning if we want to deal with them quickly, we'd want Capricorn or Taurus, but if we want to draw it out a bit, we'd want Saggitarius, Gemini, or Pisces - which has a worst relationship, meaning we'd draw it out a lot. Just something to think about.
So yeah.

Chapter 1
- Spoiler:
Technically, the game is being looked at as past events.
War over -
Yeah, that.
So you're saying that what all the people know is a lie.
Blah blah this boy is Satan in the eyes of the Church but a new report - the "Duray"/Durai report - says he is the hero.
He is now Erdrick.
See, this is what happens when you don't suggest names.
Why not?
Opening FMV thing. Ah, the days where this was the best of a console's ability.
Agrias is the guard of Princess Ovelia. She uses Holy Blade skills. The old priest is never used in battle, but he'd probably have a lot of White Magic spells.
Then a knight and his accomplices barge in.
That's Gaff Gafgarion. He's a Dark Knight. Despite the name, all he uses is an HP draining ability. He also has a MP draining ability, but it's useless because he doesn't use MP.
And he doesn't even have it learned.
Gaff's two accomplices kneel, while Gaff hangs his head or something.
"This is an urgent issue for us."
The Hokuten are...the Black Lions, I think, in WotL.
: Besides, we're mercenaries hired by the Hokuten. We're not required to show respect to you.
Gaff is a jackass, if you haven't figured out yet.
: What? How dare you!
Ovelia stops the fight by finishing praying. I say she actually wasn't, she just wanted to avoid the problem.
Suddenly!
Female Knight out of nowhere!
...Agrias, why do you have female knights? All female knights? You do realize men are better at knighting, right? Or are you trying to train them up for dancer?
Goltana is the leader of the Southern Sky, or the Nanten. He's also a fag.
Seriously, look at his face. I'm guessing we're hired to protect Ovelia from him so he can't get the throne. Otherwise, we'd be working for him, protecting Ovelia so he can, essentially, get the throne.
Agrias rushes out.
Better then picking herbs or searching for lost diaries, though.
: What, Erdrick? You have a problem too?
: ...I'm no longer a knight. Just a mercenary like you.
: ...That's right. Well then, let's go!
I have no idea what Gaff paused for.
Who is Goltana.
: What's wrong with Prince Goltana!? He's such an idiot! Does he want to start a war!?
...
...Agrias
why did you say idiot
you are a knight
: Just give us the princess, or that beautiful face of yours will be scarred forever!
Now, Gaff saying idiot is less jarring, as he isn't an actual knight.
: We can't make money that way! Rad, Erdrick! Follow me!!
Rad's name in the PSP release makes more sense: Ladd.
: Nonsense! There's no need to kill them! That's just want Goltana wants us to do! Just let them go!
: That's impossible!
You could just end the battle before 4 turns pass for the dead guys.
They're talking about "routing" them in WotL, and Gaff says instead "I find dead men rout more easily." Or something. Which I found funny for whatever reason.
In this fight, everybody but Erdrick is controlled by the AI. It's nigh-impossible to lose this battle.
I'd also like to bring up damage calculation for a bit. Gaff's Night Sword deals damage equal to WP(PA + Power). The Power is 0, so it might as well be WP * PA, the regular damage calculation for swords.
Dark Sword drains HP, so Gaff is a god.
Incantations randomly pop up when some abilities (most, except Magic Sword due to a bug) are used. They're awesome and I wish they were still in WotL.
I wish we could use Dark Knight.
Ramza's Active Turn comes up. Three things can be noted right now: CT is a measure of when you can act; it rises by your speed (speed * 1.5 if you're hasted) per clock tick. Brave determines how hard you punch/katana/knightsword and how often Reaction abilities activate (Brave%) or what items you get from Move-Find Item (the good item is (100 - Brave)%). Faith is how good magic is on you and when cast by you - greater Faith means you cast magic better but also makes you get hurt more by it.
Every value but three is relevant (Magic C-EV isn't, as no class has innate Magic EV, the 08% evade of the mythril sword isn't as Erdrick lacks Parry, and L-Weap. Power isn't as Erdrick is using his right hand). S-EV is the evade Ramza would have if he had a shield, and A-EV is the evade you'd get from a cape.
Ramza is wielding a sword, so he'd deal WP*PA as damage, or 42 damage.
You might be wondering where defense is. It doesn't exist; bar Zodiac compatibility, Ramza will always deal 42 damage with his Mythril Sword and a PA of 6. Support Abilities, Protect, and Shell are the only ways to reduce damage (and Zodiac compatibility, but). Armor just raises Max HP or Evade.
Ramza/Erdrick's Guts has him tackle someone, throw a stone, heal minor wounds, and wish he had learned Focus to raise his PA.
Erdrick settles for throwing a stone at the archer, though.
Throw Stone's damage is PA*(1..2). Despite it being impossible, it manages to do 5 damage (Erdrick has a PA of 6). Bad compatibility?
Agrias overkills with Stasis Sword - a Holy Sword ability that deals damage equal to WP * (PA + 2), and has a 25% chance to inflict Stop. Handy.
Either times are tough for Agrias' lord or whoever's supplying them, or Agrias is a dick to her subordinates. They're not even wearing proper armor!
...Rad, why do you know Fire?
...Why are you a Squire?
...Why are you casting Fire in the rain?
Fire does Faith/100 * Target Faith/100 * MA * 14. Rad has 60 Faith and 3 MA, so he shouldn't be flinging Fire around in the rain. Especially when he has Ice.
He could even be using Cure and Cure 2! Idiot.
Leveling up doesn't give a lot, besides the occasional point of PA or MA or Speed. This is why you should know what you're doing when you level grind, otherwise you'll get screwed over by monsters, who get more from levels.
Sweet Ajora, Erdrick! What did they do to you?!
Attacking from the side removes C-EV, while attacking from the back removes C-EV and S-EV. A-EV is present no matter what. This only applies to physical attacks; Magic EV is applied everywhere. It comes in lower amounts, though.
Thanks to Agrias, the most dangerous person on the field is dead.
Okay, not really, but the chemist can prolong the fight, being the source of healing.
Aaaaaand Erdrick is dead. Thankfully, he's not quite dead yet, so we don't have to restart.
EXP is 10 + (Target Level - Your Level). You also get a bonus 10 if you kill the enemy.
That's the real greatest threat (archers are jokes), so let's go to the end of the battle.
Where Rad, of all people, kill the archer. I wish he used Ice or something.
Well, fuck.
The whole battle was in vain, and your charge is assuming to be kidnapped. I'd say a damn is in good order.
: Why should I listen to you?
: What an annoying Princess.
Y'know, I question your knightliness.
I mean, you just punched a princess in her gut. And now you're slinging her onto the back of a chocobo.
God!
Agrias tries to catch him, but chocobos are much quicker then a man. Oh well, at least she didn't yell "Stop!".
I mean, she doesn't even know Stop.
See, Agrias blames God too.
: You're alive, Delita? But, why are you in Goltana's troops? Why...?
And the scene ends on that note.
