Re: The TARDIS
All caught up for the premiere! "Dark Water"/"Death in Heaven" were brilliant, and "Last Christmas" was alright. And I don't think there was a single episode in series 8 I disliked. Overall a very strong start for Capaldi.
I've noticed that series 9 appears to be made up almost entirely of two-parters, with only two standalone episodes in the official running. Hopefully that structure works out alright, it could be either good or bad.

Re: The TARDIS
Well! That was interesting.
- episode discussion:
- As the first episode of a two-parter, this one definitely has a lot more setup than payoff. It also kind of felt like we were jumping around a lot. We start on Skaro, then we're on present Earth and a few other places, then we're on past Earth, then we're back on Skaro except we don't know that it's Skaro until the invisibility goes away. It felt a bit disjointed.
Of course, this is the first time I've watched a two-parter without having the privilege of watching them one directly after the other. I've gotta take the slow path with everybody else now. :B
Also, with the whole "Clara and Missy being dead" thing. Obviously, they can't be dead because:
1. It's the start of the series, no one's dying yet, this is just the point where every main character who dies pretty much has an immunity because they needed a snappy, attention-grabbing opening to keep people watching.
2. The last time the TARDIS blew up, so did the Universe. I have the slightest feeling it's going to do a thing this time as well. Possibly something timey-wimey, maybe a bit spacey-wacey. And it might save Clara and Missy.
3. Missy was killed last series too. With a laser. And then she came back. I'm fairly certain there's something not-dying going on here.
4. This is Jenna-Louise Coleman's final series as Clara, so obviously they're gonna want some fairly extensive emotional buildup to her departure.
While we're on the subject of Clara's departure, my pet theory at this point is that Missy may actually travel with the Doctor as a companion at some point. And I would 100% totally be down with a companion Missy, as it would open up a lot of doors for exploring the Master's history with the Doctor, and the Doctor's history in general. It would have to find some way to bring Missy down to something like the Doctor's moral level, though.
And I'm still not 100% sure Danny's dead, but I'm almost hoping he is (as bad as that sounds), his departure was so heartbreaking. Dying in a completely ordinary thing like being hit by a car while crossing the street, then still getting to do the requisite heroic sacrifice, while still technically being dead? And then getting to do it again, to save a child you killed, while also still being dead? That's pretty cool. If Moffat does something Rory-like with him, it better be a really good Rory-like thing.
Really looking forward to the next half of this. Not completely sure what new surprises it'll have in store, but I bet it'll be a good one, being the series opener and all.
Also, apparently there's going to be vampire monkeys next week. Not sure how they're going to work that into a Dalek story, but um, it's a thing. Possibly something to do with the episode being titled "The Witch's Familiar."

Re: The TARDIS
For those of you who are interested in watching, but missed the episode, the BBC America Youtube page has the full episode up on their channel:
Unfortunately, they said in the comments that this was for the premiere episode only, but still.

Re: The TARDIS
*has just started watching "The Witch's Familiar"*
- spoilers:
- Clara and Missy are actually getting quite pally. Although Missy is still a touch murdery.
Also, there was actually a slightly more clever explanation for Clara and Missy surviving than I was expecting.
EDIT: "Admit it. You've all had this exact nightmare."
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT

*is now finished*
That was actually pretty good.
That was actually pretty good.
- spoilers:
- REALLY? Sonic SUNGLASSES? Doctor, how dorky can you get. Seriously. :B
That whole talk between the Doctor and Davros was pretty cool, though. Even if they were both faking it the whole time.
And a little nitpick: the Daleks have been clearly shown begging for mercy before. That shouldn't have set off the Doctor's "this is not a Dalek" red flags. But oh well, it got the episode going anyway. :V
Still wondering what Missy's "clever idea" was.

- Sonic Sunglasses are cool though!
Seriously, I want a pair now.
I liked that talk as well. It got to one of my hearts, but in my other heart, I knew it was all too good to be true. Still a good moment/exchange between the Doctor and Davros.
True, there have been a few Daleks that have begged for mercy (like the one River Song shot in the Big Bang 2 episode), but I think it was the "I give mercy" bit that really got him. That's definitely never happened.
I imagine we'll be seeing it eventually...
Also, about the Missy and Clara surviving the Dalek's "Extermination," I'm glad they clarified how that happened, along with how Missy managed to survive the end of last season. Love how they did it too, with the whole flashback scene.
And the end of that: "So the androids think he's dead, and the Doctor escapes!"
"...No, he's the Doctor... He fell into a nest of vampire monkeys."

Re: The TARDIS
- spoilery spoilers that spoil with spoilarity:
- I just hope he doesn't end up using them the whole series, that'd start looking a bit ridiculous in the really tense scenes :V
Then again, the screwdriver would probably look ridiculous anyway if I wasn't so used to seeing it.
He realized it before Clara said that, though. It's just that line that made him think deeply about how the mercy was ever allowed in in the first place. It's all a nitpick though, I'm willing to let it slide, it just caught my ear for a moment before I moved on with the episode :V
I was almost certain anything involving teleporters would be a letdown, but using the weapons to charge the teleporter is a clever bit that left me satisfied.
I was so hoping vampire monkeys were gonna be a huge focus of the episode. Just cuz. I was completely mentally prepared for a vampire monkey/Dalek alliance.
Also, another thing: Clara and Missy had some brilliant comedy in this episode. Everything from Missy pushing Clara into the sewers to playing around with asking Clara to speak as a Dalek. And I'm pretty sure the "Witch's Familiar" has the Witch as Missy and the Familiar as Dalek!Clara. :V

Re: The TARDIS
So I just watched "The Eleventh Hour" on Netflix the first time, and holy crap, did BBC America leave a lot out!
There was the stuff I already knew about, like the whole scene where young!Amy waits in the garden (which, by the way, became sort of a major point of Amy's entire character arc), the first "Silence will fall" speech from Prisoner Zero, and the "Delete your Internet history" gag.
But then there was a ton of stuff I'd never known about, like the extended fish fingers and custard scene, the argument between Amy and the Doctor about how she doesn't believe he's real and he proves it with an apple, and the extended version of the first time Amy steps in the TARDIS.

This sounds like 4Kids except a lot more nonsensical.

Re: The TARDIS
Well, they didn't really have much choice, especially for that particular episode. Since it's the first Matt Smith story, it got an extended runtime of just over an hour, and that's without commercials because the BBC is publically funded and doesn't need commercials. So BBC America had to trim it down to fit the commercials in.Lief Katano wrote:This sounds like 4Kids except a lot more nonsensical.
