All the possibilities.
(Another theory I've taken to is that after studying up on Team RWBY Neo masquerades as Papa Schnee and Summer Rose to mess with them
Or she impersonates one of RWY after the team gets split up somehow, but Blake's able to recognize she's a fake using her heightened faunus senses. read: I really want some of the advantages faunus may have in combat to come up again))
But how many people could possibly have access to these sort of powers?
She can't be the only one to have ever had a Semblance like this but she's the only one we've seen so far use illusions (that we can be sure of at this point in time).delvindeep wrote:how much trouble can yang really be in.

I think they both knew about the general plan. Cinder's shown alone in the stands, Merc's for the majority of the match is confident (even after Yang gets back up in a blaze of fire), and Emerald's conveniently right there to cry out Mercury's name after he takes the hit, run to comfort him, and to give Yang that accusatory glare. If Em was out of the loop I feel like there would have been some hint of surprise on her face, but the whole act seems so calculated.bodtsfreckles wrote:Mercury: Okay so what's the next step in the plan?
Cinder: I need you to break your leg
Mercury: W H Y
Cinder: FOR THE PLANand maybe she relishes merc in pain a bit who knows lol
Whether they knew the specifics or the end of the plan is up in the air. Or if Merc's leg being broken was intentionally planned. It might have just been "Throw the fight, but make it look convincing; Em/Neo will take care of things from there, so just let her get a hit in on you afterward, don't defend yourself."
He just might not have been expecting that hit to result in a broken leg lol
He's able to think straight enough to channel that pain into a convincing act instead of just screaming out (permissible) expletives
He might have experienced worse at the hands of his dad.
Alternatively it just might have been "throw the fight and we'll take care of the rest" to Mercury while Emerald knew what was going to happen.Metata wrote:
Thinking about this more she could be so doubtful of herself and feel that she deserves whatever punishment they give her that she doesn't even try to voice a defense for herself.Metata wrote:

Cinder and Co. played this well. Of all the students they studied for a semester (I don't actually know how much time it was but it was for awhile at least), and of all the ones to advance to the Finals, Yang gave them a golden exploitation opportunity.
Anyone who saw the WY Doubles match knows she has a temper, it's tied up with her Semblance. Neon exploited it too (for much less malicious intentions but still), it isn't and isolated incident.
And with how big of an event this tournament is so many people saw it (though I do have to pause because of this)
So many people are going to be saying shit about her, and she's probably going to believe it.npc016 wrote:Looking at the crowd’s reaction to Yang breaking Mercury’s leg and how quickly Prof Port called for the cameras to be stopped because of it was kind of interesting.
And we see why - the crowd’s negative emotion began to attract the attention of the Grimm on Vale’s outskirts. So they were probably trying to stop the broadcast from spreading that emotion to the rest of the country.
Which makes me think my god, Remnant must have the most boring TV ever. Happy endings and fluffy feelings 24/7.
Show gets too popular? Woe betide the producers if they ever hit too many feels. Depressing news? Euphemisms or you’re going to get a Grimm invasion within the hour.
Their censors must have a helluva job.
It's gonna weigh on her and her friends.
"What is she even doing in the tournament if she can't control herself?"
"Can't believe this is our future generation of hunters. Disgraceful."
"She better be expelled at the very least."
"Horrid." "Brutal." "Cruel." "Vicious." "Monster."
All these things that could be applied to certain aspects of her (because she has given brutal beatdowns before), but they aren't the whole her. And I think hearing that stuff could really get to RWB.
Ruby: THAT'S IT!
Weiss: RUBY NO! *grabs onto her hoodie* We already have one of you sisters in jail we don't need you sharing a cell!
Weiss: That goes for you too, Blake!
Blake: *slowly puts Gambol Shroud back in its proper place while trying to hide a scowl*it's only a problem if she'd get caught tho and blake wouldn't get caught,
'cause she's ace like that
i need to stop imagining these scenarios because there's only so much they can put in an episode/a volume
But wow, what a great set up with so many routes that could be taken...
...though I know you don't feel the same lol. I think it'll be nice to see those bonds of family and friendship reinforced here though.Karis wrote:Also I did kinda forget about what Mercury did in his first appearance...ugh. That makes me dislike him even more. HE'S NOT EVEN A COOL PSYCHO LADY OR ANYTHING, HE'S JUST AN ASSHOLE.
Also I think it's a bit better that Yang was set up as opposed to Weiss (i'm terrible i know)
because Weiss has a whole extra set of problems that would come from being a Schnee
Imagine if Neo had impersonated a faunus student and Weiss "attacked" her
ooooo boy (so juicy)
Also also maybe now people are finally going to start looking into just who the hell this team from Haven is that nobody has seen before on campus/taught
Maybe Em and Merc have been attending classes for awhile in preparation for this whole plan but I find it hard to believe Cinder was posing as a student before they infiltrated Beacon.
's all I got for now.

wow after all this time of saying we know practically nothing about Cinder and co. we not only get her plans coming to the forefront in the previous episode but it looks like an entire flashback episode showing how she met Em and Merc, as well as the beginning of her partnership with Adam/the White Fang. Em's looking adorable while Merc's looking the worse for wear courtesy of his alcoholic dad.
Is Amber there on unrelated business or is she on Cinder's trail? Regardless, I'm happy we get to see her prior to her fall at the hands of Cinder. Not only could we get a better idea of what a Maiden's power entails, but humanizing her makes watching Pyrrha's situation all the more agonizing.
Also, she has a pony. (Have we seen ponies before and I just forgot? I can't remember seeing any other animals besides Zwei.)
What far-flung region of the Remnant does this take place in? Will this be our first look outside the Kingdom of Vale?

- Blake and Penny interacting. Penny knew Blake was a faunus right off the bat. Ruby is the only one on Team RWBY that knows Penny's a robot for sure, but I feel like Blake would have some inkling of her origins. More so that Weiss and Yang knowing that she's a bit "odd." Like she'd pick up on Penny's lack of smell, or if she has one it's metallic in nature. (This hasn't been explicitly stated but that could be one way Sun knew Blake was a faunus upon first running into her too.) But Blake doesn't pry because she's respectful of Penny's boundaries. She might not know the specifics behind the situation but she understands what it's like to try passing as a human.
Just something I'd like to see. (Assuming nothing happens to Penny before this can take place. )

I'm guilty of using these terms interchangeably as well but technically Em's semblance deals with hallucinations, not illusions like Neo. Hallucinations affect an individual or two because Em goes into their minds to mess with them, whereas Neo creates/projects an illusion that can be seen by a larger number of people. (I'm assuming the more intricate the illusion the greater it drains her, like how Em gets a headache later on after going into two peoples' minds.)Oaky wrote:So it confirms that Emerald's semblance is that with illusions and she messes with minds to create them.
With that said, Em's looking pretty desperate to pull this stunt in broad daylight with witnesses in the store. (I'm assuming they're in the store and she just targeted the shopkeep, otherwise she could've pulled off a cleaner heist.)

From the preview I thought Cinder was chatting with Merc around a campfire after he ran away from home
not around his house after he MURDERED HIS FATHER AND SET IT ON FIRE JFC
Merc you need a doctor like rn that is not proper bandaging
you put your clothes on after you do that
you'd think that with having a dad for an assassin he'd teach some basic-yet-proper first aid
Despite being dead Marcus doesn't appear to be nearly as beaten up from what we can see of him. Then again he is lying face down. Who knows what his front looks like after Merc got through with him.
Mercury "Murderous Asshole Jr." BlackCinder: Tell me, are you anything like your father?Never forget Tukson

And Roman is held in lower regard than I thought. Was thinking he had a longer history with Cinder and, while not higher than her by any means, was closer to her in rank.Mercury during the transition: My dad always said, if you need to know a city, ask the rats.
Roman: Well, hello gorgeous.
Whether this applies to Neo though is still uncertain. While she was introduced with Roman she could have been an associate of Cinder's who she assigned to him. (Potentially even getting her a new set of clothes to match with him lol; based on her inspiration I'm leaning toward her being an associate of Roman's first for now. A nice bonus outcome for Cinder of their meeting if this proves to be true. She finds someone with a hallucination semblance and someone with an illusion one.)
- Team CME Meets Adam:
we meet again, WF-member-with-awkwardly-placed-glasses (assuming the poor guy can't wear contacts)
Cinder says she's seeking out Adam's help because he's got skillz but really she just wants to use the WF to fuck shit up/use them as a cover/instigate more ill will between faunus and humans.
Until now I thought Adam and the WF Lieutenant were of equal rank but I guess Adam's higher up in the WF because the Lieutenant seems to be following his lead? He can't be the new leader though, right? He just seems so... young. And I didn't think Blake was that close to WF leadership for some reason. Makes me wonder if she personally helped overthrow the previous leader and then came to regret it.
Speaking of Blake HOLY SHIT SHE MAKES A CAMEOclarkesxlexas wrote:When did blake become a guest star on rwby?

This episode is doing wonders for the pre-series timeline. Cinder didn't meet Em and Merc too long ago, only a few years at most, but she meet them before the events of the Black Trailer take place.
Sidenote but I really like the lightning in this scene, especially for Adam with that map of Remnant behind him for a backdrop.
- Attack on Amber:
i don't think you have to worry about merc cindy he's got pretty g8 footworkCinder during the transition: Remember the plan. Exactly as discussed. Not a foot out of place.
Amber's not even looking at Cinder when the hallucination starts so I guess Em doesn't need eye contact to initiate it.

THAT THEORY ABOUT MERC HAVING ARTIFICIAL LEGS WAS RIGHT
NO WONDER HE QUIT WHEN HE DID DURING HIS MATCH WITH PYRRHA SHE MIGHT HAVE FIGURED OUT IT WASN'T JUST HIS BOOTS THAT HAD METAL IN THEM
HOLY SHIT Quotient +1
They seem a bit... exposed though. I guess his aura extends to protect his artificial limbs because they're an extension of his body and his nerves are connected to them, but still, you'd think Cinder would put up some money to maybe make them a bit more fortified.
There's two theories here:Oaky wrote:I'm a little confused about why Mercury was all beaten and such. I kind of assumed he was abused by his father before the episode but I guess his father was an assassin? Was he helping him or? Guess it doesn't matter a ton but...
[...]
So Merc has a prosthetic leg. Wonder how he ended up with that and if he already had it by the time he met Cinder.
1. Marcus Black, while far from being Remnant's best dad, earned enough money via his assassin work to pay for the prosthetic legs his disabled son needed (Mercury mentions later in the episode that they're not cheap. 's a lot of blood money.) Upon finally receiving these prosthetic limbs, he finally has enough strength to retaliate against his father and murders him after years of abuse. (beat Edward Elric's learning curve by quite a bit)
2. Marcus Black is a real asshole who did not view his son as anything more than an experiment/toy. He abused his son for years while simultaneously making him stronger and training him as an assassin. But Mercury was progressing slowly in his eyes, so, to speed things along, he amputates his son's legs and replaces them with prosthetics. Mercury in return murders him now that he has the power to finally end his hell on earth.
It's not 100% certain but I really feel like this imagery implies that he acquired his prosthetics shortly before meeting Cinder and Em:cinderfell wrote:man
i knew we were going to get dark fast but
i didn’t realize that meant mercury stumbling down from his burning home with his father’s corpse and bloody bandages on his maybe-already-amputated-legs dark
Even without the common trend of making blood bright red long after a wound has been inflicted this looks pretty fresh to me.
Whether he has the exact same pair in the present is still unknown.
oooo boyGaga wrote:I like the implied reasons for their choice to side with Cinder
(Em wants Cinder and Merc's home life sounds shitty...)
The most surprising bits of Amber's power to me were the lightning and the freezing of leaves because I associate the former with summer and the latter with winter. Upon thinking about it a bit more the latter made more sense, since fall is the season when leaves are beginning to transition to this state. I just wish they would have made the autumn part of this transformation more evident because it looks like it goes right from green to icy.
Still sort of confused by the lightning due to my association though.
Those leaves ended up leaving noticeable scratches on Em. They were able to bypass her aura? :0
Cinder ends up using the same attack here that she used against Glynda in the first episode. Assuming she hasn't already stolen another Maiden's Power, this squashes any doubt about that being Maiden-related (though even without that bit it looks pretty certain Maiden Power is elementally based.)
Speaking of Glynda, she was able to go toe-to-toe with a Cinder running on Half Maiden Power
Granted they both probably weren't giving their all but man just how powerful is Professor Goodwitch
She then displays impressive speed and ends up breaking Amber's aura with a triangle attack of whirly-generating arrows.
Amber's still able to get up and retaliate though, firing off a series of elemental attacks. (Is this like a less powerful version of the Avatar State where a Maiden taps into the Maiden Power when she no longer has her own strength?) Upon downing Merc and Em she appears to make a move to permanently put a stop to their attack, but before she can Cinder puts a stop to her now that her aura's gone.
And now we see how Amber got those scars.
Prior to this signs pointed to Raven being the one behind that summoning swirly sphere deal in the openings. With Cinder having the ability to do this as well, Raven's freed from a bit of suspicion. I mean it still could be her since we still don't know what her motives are but Cinder's the better bet atm.cinderfell wrote:Remember when Raven opened a portal.
Not only was Cinder able to create a rift, but she summoned a new Grimm from it. And controlled it.
FUUUUUUUUCinder during an earlier transition: You will question everything you know.
*Grimm growling*
Emerald: This is impossible.
If only Ms. Bailey had been able to challenge this fate. 3
But Qrow shows up before the transfer of power can be completed. Cinder looked genuinely caught off guard here.
She gets the mark of the Maiden right where she shot Amber in the back. :0
Okay I will give people Qrow not recognizing Cinder
but he had to have seen Em and Merc (Em might have changed her hairstyle but Merc looks exactly the same)
I hope he's shown to pick up on this while he's investigating what happened during the Finals. Mercury certainly remembered him in "It's Brawl in the Family".
Also,
I like this shot.
My headcanon hasn't been killed yet yay
Is Qrow arriving to save Maidens in dire situations a thing?Metata wrote:Right now I'm thinking the reason Qrow was acting all pissy during Chapter 6 was because of something like this. Seeing Amber, most likely Summer, potentially Raven, and then the thought of Pyrrha going through all of this too, maybe he's just tired of seeing young women suffering at the hands of this system and he can't keep it under wraps like the rest of the Ozluminati.
's not an excuse for acting like he did towards Pyrrha but I can see why if this is the case and it makes me view him in a better lightIs this why he was there in time to save Ruby and Yang all those years ago?

Alternatively it just might have been "throw the fight and we'll take care of the rest" to Mercury while Emerald knew what was going to happen.
Mercury sounded a lot more convincing in the last episode leaving the situation uncertain, but now, goddamn, what an actor. (If he actually spent some time at Haven I bet he was the star of the drama club.)
I'm going to feel really silly for asking this if it's super obvious but who is the second person she's referring to? Qrow?Emerald: Ugh, headache. One mind I can handle but two is a stretch.
AAAAAAAAH NEO'S BACK!!

i can't believe they let her drive is she even tall enough to reach the gas pedal
A shift in the TV News animation.
The reaction to the "attack" is as expected.centiel wrote:what’s billy ray cyrus doing at Vale
Mercury looks like he has the same legs he did during the flashback. By now you'd really think Cinder would've put money into fortifying them, they seem as exposed as the prototype paladin.

she didn't deserve any of this T_TOaky wrote:It was kind of sad seeing the Autumn maiden, someone so powerful, still get bested by that trio. Why did they do it is what I still don't understand but that aside...
...thank goodness Qrow showed up in time. Guess this also confirms where Cinder's power comes from (not that she wasn't a skilled fighter before, mind you). I'm wondering how he doesn't recognize the three since he must have seen them at least in one of the fights? Eh.
It's interesting in that, whoever Cinder is working for/with, she's the one to obtain the Maiden Power. Is she meant to transfer it to her boss/partner down the line, or is this power a pittance compared to what their final goal is?
While Ozpin, Glynda, and Ironwood have most likely keeping tabs on the matches I don't think Qrow was paying super close attention to any of the team matches, and he could have easily missed Team EVIL's. The Doubles Round though, I hope Em and Merc's match against Coco and Yatsuhashi is brought up.
Like I said earlier I think the match between Pyrrha and Merc ended before she could realize thistwinconstellations wrote:I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING
PYRRHA TOUCHED MERCURY’S LEGS. SHE KNOWS HE HAS METAL PROSTHESIS.
Which means she knows Mercury can’t have a broken bone, at least not in the place Yang hit him, and Coco knows that someone on that team has illusion powers.
Pyrrha and Coco are captains of the Yang protection squad.
Buuuut I could be wrong
Power to the Yang Protection Squad!! ୧(`Д´)୨
I'm thinking you're right. Em's probably going to be allowed to sub in for Merc, but we won't be getting that opening matchup between her and Weiss in the tournament.Oaky wrote:Wonder what the next matchup is going to be...and how things will proceed with team Merc/Em--I'm assuming team RWBY is disqualified.
