Re: Active Time Battles! Crystals! Job Shift System! Bartz! THIS CAN ONLY BE FFV!
Chapter 5 - Death to giant crab things!
- And to dinosaur things! ...wait:
This is all that !Check does. Given that we already have Libra, and it doesn't even require more then 1 MP, why would you ever use !Check?
...well, a quick way to see enemy HP, maybe, but you could be killing or healing that turn, and you don't see the enemies' level, which is important.
Back in Tule, we finally engage in PLOT!, as the only other thing to do would be needlessly leveling up our jobs.
: *nods* Yes. He built the Torna Canal.
We then invade the guy's house. Loooooooot!
Fuck, he's home.
I missed the screenshot ("missed", not "fudged"), but he turned around and jumped, because why wouldn't he?
: Zok! It is good to see you.
: Yes...it's been a long time.
: Oh, dear. Ever since the wind crystal was destroyed, the beasts in the canal have multiplied like rabbits!
...how does he know this? How did they do this? In real time, it would make more sense, given the time between the Wind Crystal update and this one, but it couldn't have been that long since the Wind Crystal shattered. ...I think.
: It's much to dangerous to go enter!
...why does the canal even have a key?
...why did you lock it?
*grumble grumble* Better at least get some meat...
:3
Flashback time!
:onguard:: Stella--if anything should happen to me, never tell Lief about the crystals...They aren't his burden to bear.
Any future speakingness by Lief's mother, Stella, will be credited to . I'm just putting that here so I don't have to sift through the Ultima LP for the emoticon.
Also Lief's dad might just have a portrait (King Tycoon does, at any rate.) Call me lazy.
Also, I have to point this out: Lief, evidently, had green hair as a child. Seriously, SE, yeh couldn't even make the generic 8-year-old sprite have brown hair? Or pallete swap it for Bartz?
Well at least Lenna was considerate and started sleeptalking after everybody else started heavy sleeping.
Despite this, Bartz still has the best father/son relationship of any Final Fantasy protagonist.
: ...Here. Take it.
: Huh? Take what?
: The key to the canal. With it, you can open the gate and travel to Walse. I was worried about Lenna, so I hid the key, but...Please! Take care of her!
*Bartz nods*
I'd show you a special scene thing, but I want to wrap this up pretty quickly. Basically Lief and Galuf peep in on Faris and are attracted to his ness.
When leaving town, Faris comes and joins them like normal. However...
They argue a bit, with the pirate's loyalty code being called up. Faris, being a) Faris b) and c) their captain, obviously wins. Farewell, pirates.
When boarding the ship, there's also a cutscene. Lenna basically explains that without the four crystals, it's hard - nay, impossible - to live in this world. Kind of like in Final Fantasy I, except the crystals are actually shattering instead of just having their power drained. Everyone accepts the call. Good.
Lief - Key - Canal. Or something.
: Does it matter? Let's get going!
Pretty sure they (or at least the Suckers) only attack chicks.
Goblin Punch's true power unveils itself! And damn is it awesome.
That enemy group also gave 2 ABP.
Well this ain't good.
Karlabos, like all aquatic creatures, is weak to lightning. Our only source of Lightning damage at the moment is Black Mage. Welp.
What'd I tell ya? Also, I missed it, but there was a Libra bit that said it was Level 5. Guess who's also Level 5?
Not Lief.
This (and 48) is the type of damage Galuf pumps out. As the damage is the same against weaker enemies, the conclusion is that enemies have no defense or have shitty defense scores, even on bosses, ala FFIV.
Guess what Lief's doing for the rest of this battle? Hint: not Goblin Punching.
I remember that, in Final Fantasy IX, bosses had awesome steals. Heck, even in FFVI, the one pseudo-boss had a mythril dagger to steal. No more.
All in all, the battle goes like one would expect: Galuf punches, Lenna cures, Lief Aeroes, and Faris shanks. Or stabs. Something.dammit I missed the Blue Magic things
Karlabos' special attack, Feeler, deals damage and can/does paralyze the target. We've gone over paralysis in FFI before; as you'd expect from it, the ATB gauge doesn't fill.
This is Karlabos' HP after I decided to Check it on a whim.
And to the victor go the spoils!
...
That's it.
No EXP.
No gil.
We got a Tent, though. Somehow.
On the upside, Lenna and Faris increase their job level, netting !White 1 and Find Passages. I'll explain to you how (most) mage jobs work right now: each job level you net them grants you an additional spell level they can use out of that job. For example, say Lenna becomes level 3 in White Mage, then switches to Knight. She can use level 3 white magic or lower in that job, but no more. The levels overwrite each other; Lenna can't use !White 2 in Knight. But why would you want to use it anyway?
Anyway, once you net all six levels of magic, to master the job you need one more ability (MP +x% for Black and White Mage). There's two exceptions to this; one is (obviously) Blue Mage, probably because they couldn't fit all the Blue Magic into 6 spell levels of 3. The second we'll meet shortly.
Whew.
Fuck.
Faris is, understandably, ticked. He's losing his brother...sister...thing. However, he wants to jump after him/her/it.
Lief and Galuf somehow catch him.
Anyway, without Syldra, the boat's just driftwood. We're gonna drift on...obviously, this won't be the end. But where, exactly, will we drift to? Will we, by sheer luck, drift directly to Walse? ...no. Find out what exactly happens to our crew next time!

I stopped taking those a long time ago because they kicked me out of grammar school.

Re: Active Time Battles! Crystals! Job Shift System! Bartz! THIS CAN ONLY BE FFV!
Putting this here to get back to later.
Chapter 6 - Mage's Playground
- Watch it burn:
- Last time on Final Fantasy V, we beat up a giant crab thing and lost what made our ship run (Syldra. Not oil. That would be stupid. FFIV's sequel.). Without it, and as the winds are dead, we're stuck in the ocean, drifting to someplace unknown...
Or at least, were. The next morning (or several mornings after, or whatever), our crew wakes up...
: The graveyard of the sea...
: A gathering place for ruined and scuttled ships...and the undead.
That...sounds less then good. But how does Lenna know this?
Galuf says we should hotfoot it out of here. Good idea. jRPG logic states that we'll somehow be able to proceed from here.
While we're at it, I switch Lenna to a Black Mage. She doesn't need any more job levels in White Mage at the moment (as we only have level 1 white magic), and Black Mages rule here. She has the highest base magic stat, therefore she rules the most here. We don't really need Learning here, as I don't believe any enemy here uses Blue Magic.
Now why do black mages rule here?
Boom. These guys make up most of the random encounters here. As undead, they're innately weak to Fire, and take damage from Cure instead of being healed by it. I believe Fire hurts them better then Cure, hence Lenna changing to Black Mage to wreck their shit.
I thought we got a map here. We don't. We do, however, get a map in this dungeon.
I told you man
I told you Fire wrecks their shit
I mean, seriously, that's almost twice their HP. I think that we could split it and they'd be near dead.
(Faris shanked it, by the by.)
Galuf's Kick attack. Never use this against bosses.
Enemy formations like that are lovely. The wispy things (Calcruthls) negate fire damage, however.
Galuf finally gains his first job level, netting !Focus. This stalls your physical attack for a bit, but when it unleashes, you get more damage. I slot it in instead of learning because, again, we don't need it here.
Also, fun fact: !Kick cannot be learned.
C'mon, Faris, be a man. Lenna's not and she's not complaining.
: What, are you going to melt or something? Come on!
Oh Bartz.
It still kills them, but..a White Mage should save her MP for healing her allies and/or Holy.
(I think that the problem is that skeletons aren't weak to Holy, per say, unlike in, say, Tactics A2.)
...
...
...did...
...did a monster...
...in the second dungeon...
...drop an item...
...that restores all HP and MP?!
We want to nab at least 5 of these. It'll become clear later.
ANYWAY, against Faris' wishes, we go swimming.
Hm?
...still better then !Check, so yoink!
Also, don't ask me how the top part is dry while the door's in water.
I think Focus is the only thing that uses charge time in this (version) of the game. Granted, you don't test it with Goblin Punch.
Obviously, we gain Black LV1.
Yoink! To a point.
...how is that undead?
Well, at least it's undead. (I used Cure on it.)
This is one of Galuf's !Focus attacks. They can score at least up to 120 damage for now. Monks are one of the few guys who get better at hurting stuff while leveling up; Brawler (the innate skill that allows monks to increase their barefisted power) increases fist damage by level.
Have I mentioned how much I love this translation?
: This room seems safe enough...Let's take a rest.
But there's no save point.
: But
: Okay, time to get dry!
: Are you crazy, boy? You'll catch pneumonia in those things!
What?
Exactly!
Wait for it
wait for it
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaait for it
Ah, that never gets old.
To be fair, disguising yourself as a guy on a pirate ship (if you're, you know, a girl) is probably the safest thing you can do.
My question is, how did they find out?
*whump*
: Yeah, so?
*whump*
: Well, would YOU want to be the only girl on a ship full of pirates?
Maybe if I had a gun concealed between my breasts.
: ...Ah, right. Yeah.
At least Lief actually realizes his stupidity.
You guys voting on Lief was actually pretty smart.
Galuf is relieved that, pre-amnesia, he was not gay.
...huh?
Anyway, they go to bed.
Are you saying Faris has big boobs?
...rated E for everyone, folks.
: y'could at least talk like one...
: Heh...No point in trying to change her...Faris is Faris!
: That's for certain!
Well, at least if I die, I don't have to go through PLOT! again.
I shouldn't die, though.
The skeletons die after this. How is a mystery to me.
Woo!
Also in the chests: two antidotes.
I don't think you ever jump on the map screen ever again.
Huh, odd. I hope there's something good in the chest, though.
...how the...Final Fantasy.
Woo! (Faris)
!Flee makes you automatically run from battle, unless you couldn't run in the first place. I won't ever use it, as I shan't ever flee!
It then occurs to me that, as I'll actually, y'know, use White Mage for Lenna, I should probably switch over to it and slot in !Black 1.
Le gasp! Lief's mother!
Dammit, Lief.
King Tycoon?! (You can tell because of the awesome-ass portrait.)
I get Lenna, but why Faris? Unless...! Le gasp! I just thought of it!
Faris is really an old person like Galuf and is Tycoon's mother!
...wait, that makes no sense. Carry on.
You have a portrait, so you must be important. However, we haven't met you yet, and Galuf has no fucking clue who you are, so he won't be mind controlled into what Lief, Lenna, and Faris have been.
Well fuck.
Galuf says hell no,
snaps his friends out of it,
and fights the mistress! Her name is Siren, by the by.
So, Siren.
Level 2, sadly, is way past what anybody would be by by the time they'd get here, so Goblin Punch doesn't work. Probably so they don't escape her gimmick easily.
When she's human-colored, she resists magic but takes physical attacks like a chump. Her other form makes her become a zombie - y'know, takes fire attacks like a chump, takes damage from Cure-type spells, etc. I don't think she dies from a Phoenix Down, though, and I ain't trying. She also resists physical attacks more:
This was from !Focus.
Among her repritore of spells is Haste, Slow, and Cure. When undead, she can use a poison attack (which is why Galuf is poisoned).
Cure can heal for quite a bit. Well, for us, anyway. Still annoying.
Lenna's asleep, Galuf's poisoned, and Lief is slowed. Annoying. (Slow, as you may guess, slows the rate the ATB gauge fills. Guess what Haste does.)
Given the fact that my main two sources of magical damage were slowed and incapacitated, I was relived when this screen showed up.
Like Karlabos, Siren gives 5 ABP and an item. Usual boss procedure in this game, although the ABP may increase as we beat more stuff up.
What item we get depends on which form she was in when she died. If she was in human form when she died, we'd instead get Bronze Armor, which is really not that useful for my current party set up as I don't think Lief can equip it. Lief can, however, equip the bronze shield.
See? Also, don't be fooled by the fact that weapons are appearing; without a special ability, Lief can't dual wield. He will, however.
ANYWAY, our heroes exit in a new land. Where are they? Karnak? ...no. Find out where they have landed...next time!

But they weren't in bed with Faris, she didn't kick them, and...well, they may or may not have touched her boobs. It's hard to tell with sprites.
