Chapter 2 - The Crystal of Wind
- Spoiler:
Hey, Lief got the most votes. :I
...although all the other times I play through this game, Bartz wasn't ever a thief. Fuck.
: Lief...
*Lief nods*
: Guess it's a meteorite...
Oh, so Sephiroth didn't succeed. Whew.
: A meteorite...I wonder if it has a connection to the wind stopping? *goes in front of Lief and nods* Again, I give you my thanks. I wish I could do something more to show my appreciation, but I really must go...*Lenna walks off, but -*
...well, I screwed up, but basically they meet the old man from earlier (named Galuf), Lenna reveals she must go to the Wind Shrine, Galuf begs to go with, and Lenna (reluctantly) agrees. Bartz turns them down, wanting to contine exploring the world.
We'll follow up next time. Sorry it's so short.

You're gonna hate me, Lief... but I looked up a Let's Play of this game. I already know what's gonna happen. I couldn't resist, sorry.

Nah, I won't hate you. I'll hate you if you ruin the rest of the plot for everybody else, though.
And maybe if you go too far ahead in the plot. Maybe.
Anyway
Chapter 2 - The Crystal of Wind (cont'd)

Chapter 2 - The Crystal of Wind (cont'd)
- Spoiler:
- Last time: Lief and Lenna found an amnesiac man named Galuf. His target was the Wind Shrine, which is also Lenna's target. Lief declined to go for ADVENTURE! (Which is weird, because exploring the Wind Shrine would be a good source of exploring, no?) Galuf and Lenna left, and Lief is still in the forest. Naturally, as this is a GBA remake of an SNES RPG, we'll have to catch up with them. Before that, however:
Yoink! These little fuckers cost 1000 gil at shops. And they just restore a character to life at single-digit HP (I think)!
Still needed before you get the Life spell.
Anyway, Lief returns to the beginning of the forest to meet up with his yellow-plumed compadre:
*Boko nods*
In the plains...mountains...things...to the north, Boko throws Lief off.
Like most action sequences, the nature of the screenshots nulls what you see here. The screen's shaking.
: Augh!
: Geh!
: Kweh!
...sweet jesus, I didn't fudge the screenshot!
Anyway, yeah. It's just a battle with a goblin. See?
I meant to get a shot of Lief's sword slashing, but the damage he can deal now is good enough.
Goblins, of course, are no problem for Lief! They do have a enemy skill that could be troublesome, but I don't think they use it now, specifically because it would be troublesome.
I'm having a spot of trouble because I have to go back and forth between writing this and playing the game. Nothing huge, though, they're still goblins and I'm still Lief. If there is one thing I'm good at, it's beating stuff that isn't one of you guys into submission!
Lenna and Galuf are up ahead, and Boko/Lief pick them up and go forth!
And jump over a chasm, while they're at it.
Lief looks badass here.
: *groaning noises*
: Lief!
: Hey, don't worry about it.
: The road's covered in rubble. I don't think you're going to be able to make it to Tule that way.
*Lenna walks up to Lief*
: But, if I can't get to the Wind Shrine, then...
: Uhhhh...
: The old guy's pretty dead set on getting there, too...All right! I'll go with you personally and personally see to it that you get there safely!
: Oh! Really?
: Yeah! You know, it was my dad's dying wish that I go out and travel the world...
Then why didn't you accept their offer in the first place? Checking out the Wind Shrine is bound to get you to explore some places!
: Plus, this time, it feels like - like the wind is calling me.
Foreshadowing!
: What a little sweet-talker! As if you don't just have the hots for the little missy.
: Don't sound so surprised! This old dog is ready for anything!
*Galuf laughs*
: Still, if the road is blocked, that makes things a little more difficult...
Either breed Boko so that his children are Mountain or Ocean Chocobos OR find mystickal items that transport Boko to a magickal world where a Fat Chocobo can upgrade his abilities.
: Hrm...
This was a decade or two before Final Fantasy VII and IX were spawned, and therefore a decade or two before the PlayStation was born, therefore we can't do that.
: ...
...I won't give up. There must be a way to reach the Wind Shrine!
As this is a GBA port of an SNES JRPG, there will be exactly one way to get to the Wind Shrine.
: All right! Let's ride!
Screenshot fudgery ensues: Boko was supposed to be jumping. Then again, it only happened for a few frames; I'd be surprised if I got it.
This is our stopping point for now; next time, we meet pirates (yar) and (finally) see the titular Wind Crystal! Maybe. Yes, yes we will. I'll make sure of that.

- Spoiler:
- Last time, we did stuff. This time, pirates! Yar!
: Probably opened up during one of the quakes.
I might be missing some FFV-mythos here, but this makes next to no sense when you see something that's inside.
: Boko, I think this is going to be a little too dangerous for chocobos.
Read: you can't go fast enough to evade enemies and not crash into cave walls in here.
: You stay here, okay?
: *nods* Kweh!
This is one of the two notable things in the cave, and for a good reason:
This enemy skill (which we can learn) drains HP from the opponent and gives it back to the user. You may be wondering why it did 0 damage; it's not because Lief has super-special-awesome Magic Defense, but more because of the damage formula - it's user's max HP - user's current HP. As Galuf or Lenna (Lief would kill it in one hit ) haven't touched it, it therefore deals 0 HP damage. In the iOS version, at least, it may also be subject to a bit of randomization (that or damage is capped at the opponent's current HP), as whenever I used it it didn't restore the user's (Bartz's) HP back to full.
From this fight (well, both of the fights; the first Steel Bat group I ran into didn't use it), everybody nets a level up. I'll show you stats later, once we get the fourth member of our group.
Look at Cap's LP of OFF. This is like the save block thing, minus the ability to save. Those are save points, remember.
Further along in the cave:
jesus his head got fucked up why did I have to get this frame
I don't ever remember you asking how to get in.
Anyway, this is the bit that I said didn't make sense earlier. If the quakes were recent (as in, the meteoquake was the first one), then how did the pirates manage to install the system so fast? Why would they do it (I'd imagine it couldn't be for the healing spring, as they couldn't have known about it)?
Anyway, we nab the chest (Leather Cap, which we give to Lenna as she's the softest), flip the switch, and roll.
An opening in the cave nets us a look at this ship. A ship travelling without wind. How...odd.
Missed: pirate.
: I wonder if they would give us a ride?
Lenna is as naive as Terra is thick.
: Um, I think the only ride they'd be interested in is a keel-haul for us.
: Yeah...you can't ask a favor from a pirate! That's why we'll just sneak on and take their ship!
: Whoa! You're pretty gutsy for an old-timer.
*Galuf laughs*
Okay, this update is getting kinda long, so I'll summarize their effort in taking the ship: they fail, as only the captain can steer the ship. However!
I had to include this. But for the real however:
(In case you can't tell, she has a pendant on. It had a sparkle effect, but I missed it as I was fast-forwarding.)
Which
So
This surprises the pirates, but as Faris is captain, he makes the calls, no matter how effimate he is.
Also, there's a bit of dramatic irony: Lenna reveals she's the princess of Tycoon. This surprises Bartz/Lief/Bief and Galuf. However, it doesn't surprise us, as we know from the opening that she's a princess.
is how the ship moves when there's no wind. Syldra is also useful because it allows more control and allows the ship to go faster.
Don't get too attached, now. Spoiler: we go through vehicles in this game like one goes through party members in FFIV. Very, very quickly.
Also, Faris joins our party! So now, stats!- Spoiler:
These stats will stay with us until time's end. Even when/if everybody reaches level 99, all that will be different is their HP and MP. Kind of like FFVI's early game. The most important stats, however (Attack, Defense, and Magic Defense), will always be modded by equipment, and some equipment can mod the base stats. And something coming up will completely modify stats.
Save point! Fun fact: FFVA has four save slots, as opposed to three.
Remember this if you plan to play FFV for yourself.
The door contains a broadsword, which we apply to Galuf for a sweet 12 attack, at the cost of his fist's second hit. It'll work out.
Boss. :I
Its first form uses Breath Wing, an attack that hits all party members. The second form is the obligatory tutorial for ATB that is never used again in that game:
It takes no damage and counters attacks with Claw. Which is...less threatening then Breath Wing. Potion up while its wings are closed. You'll need it.
Breath Wing.
It dies after that.
Yoink!
...fuck.
: The crystal-
: It's shattered!
They mourn...but then...
Anyway, yeah. End of Chapter 2! Sorry that took so long... I guess the lesson here is never name the chapter after something that you aren't about to get to...
Next time, I'mma gonna explain the Job Shift System.

If you mean "image repeated twice instead of using the proper image", then yes, there is a broken image.
Also, of course Faris is , he's Faris.
Anyway!
Use the tutorial for the Job Shift System?

- Spoiler:
- When we last left our heroes, they obtained the four essences of the crystals, allowing them to draw upon the powers the crystal recorded. Let's take a look at them, shall we?
(As a note: Abilities with a ! in front of them are command abilities. As in, you can use them in battle.)
Knight - These warrior guys protect allies on low health. A few game breaking ways to use them on bosses/fixed tough enemies that only use physical-type attacks is to get everyone else on low health, then have the Knight use his/her special command, Guard, which nulls all physical damage to the Knight. Presto, it's a cake walk.
Monk - Those who select this job have some nifty passive abilities - they have Counter, which sometimes counters stuff, Barehanded, which allows attack power to rise when you fight barehanded, and the command ability !Kick, which splits a physical attack among all enemies (and you have to be a Monk to use it). It had the highest Strength in the SNES version, and is tied with a new job for it.
Thief - Thieves steal stuff. Along with that, you must have a thief in your party if you want to yoink everything without a guide - they have the passive ability Find Passages. They could also hasten your party in the SNES version, but now it's kinda unneeded. They also just have some plain useful abilities, like Vigilance (null: back attacks). It also has the highest agility.
Blue Mage - My favorite job in the history of forever. While it has some pretty crappy command abilities (!Check reveals an enemies' HP, while !Scan is like Libra except it doesn't share a spell list with Holy or Cure-type spells), its main focus is !Blue Magic. It allows you to learn enemy techniques - as long as you're hit with them. To learn them in any other job besides Blue Mage, you must equip the passive ability Learning (which I will equip on all of my party members because I have a blue magic fetish), unless you learned it and are a Freelancer (more on that later). Blue Magic does a ton of stuff - damage, healing, support. It also has Goblin Punch, which can do 8 times the damage of a regular attack if you and the target share levels. .3. Useful.
Black Mage -
Need I say more?
White Mages - Healers 'n supporters. Like Miki, but not always a chick.and yes I know there's spoilers but y'know what shut it
To change jobs, you select the "Job" command on the menu. A screen like the one shown above will then show up. You pick the job.
As I want everybody to have the Learning ability, they'll all become Blue Mages. I'll later keep Lief as a Blue Mage, but switch Galuf to Monk, Lenna to White Mage, and Faris to Thief. Unless you offer up something else, of course. (No, Faris will not be anything but a thief, and Lief will always use blue magics.)
After switching jobs (or selecting "Ability"), this screen shows up. In it, you can assign abilities learned to the second slot. Job commands cannot be changed except by switching jobs. How do you learn abilities, you may ask? I'll tell you later. But first...
After changing jobs, equipment is optimized. There's an option in Config to have it not optimize, but it has it empty, and that would be dumb.
After every battle, you get ABP/AP (Ability Points, but I will always read it as "Auto-Battle Points", even though Auto-Battle wasn't thought of at this point in time). Gaining enough of these nets you a job level up, and therefore an ability:
For example, now it would take 9 ABP to get Blue Mage to level 1 and therefore learn the !Check ability. I'll use !Check when there's no other ability to slot in, but it's really, really useless.
So...that's it, I believe. Next time: we learn Blue Magics, get some spells to fling, equip our peoples, and learn Learning!.
Oh, yes! Jobs also modify stats, and are the main source of doing so (besides some equipment). Being a Black Mage, for example, raises your Magic by 21, but lowers your strength by 9 and vitality by 2. Upon mastery of a job, Freelancer (the base job) nets the bonuses (not weaknesses) of the highest job mastered (for example, mastering Black Mage only will net you +21 Magic for Freelancer, but not the strength and vit. lowering, and mastering a job with higher magic will erase the Black Mage's +21 and instead use its bonus). Combined with its two ability slots (as the Freelancer has no base command, remember), this makes Freelancer one of the best jobs.

Re: Active Time Battles! Crystals! Job Shift System! Bartz! THIS CAN ONLY BE FFV!
Chapter 3 - Blue Magics and regular magics and job levels oh my!
- Spoiler:
We be starting this update off with the Blue Mage's basic damage-dealing spell: Aero. It hurts stuff. That is all. It's also one of the few sources for wind-elemental damage in the game.
Normally, Goblin Punch is just a regular attack. It doesn't even cost any MP. However, if you and the target share the same level, then the damage is multiplied by eight. Lief's normal 30 damage would become 280, for example.
Oh god, I love these little fuckers. Why?
...well, I missed the screenshot for it, but they give 2 ABP (sadly, not each) if encountered only with other Nutkins. Given that most enemies give only 1, this makes Nutkins awesome.
This town contains plot. We are not here for plot.
This town contains grog. Pirates love grog.
Faris is a pirate. Faris therefore loves grog.
We're here for spells to fling. Libra is the only one I feel like I need to explain to you; it reveals HP and enemy weaknesses. It's also used by some enemies, like the upcoming boss, and then it's useless.
It's basically the Blue Mage's !Scan, except it's in a command list with other useful spells. And it will take you far less battles to get (!Scan is the last ability the Blue Mage learns, and it takes 250 ABP to). Have I mentioned how much the Blue Mage's non-Blue Magic command abilities suck?
Nabbing the level 1 spells is vital too, even if we don't have a Black Mage. I'll elaborate later.
Yoink.
Also, for how useful it is, and the damage it can deal, only costs 2 MP. This is half of Aero's MP cost, and Aero just does level 1 magic damage.
(useless) Yoink.
I wonder what this button does.
Yoink.
Long story short: Boko got worried and followed us in here. He got banged up (this was before Chocobos had combat abilities), and is now resting in the hospital. No more chocobo...for now.
: Unless ye captain be saying otherwise.
: Yessir!
2 ABP.
The number 2 has never looked so sexy.
Yoink!
And that is where we will end for today, folks! Lief will continue Blue Maging (unless you really want him to be something else for some reason), while everyone else will use the jobs seen here (see Lief). Next time: crab-thing killing!
