Just saying, deafness and muteness are two different things (deaf can't hear, mute can't speak/vocalize properly) and to use them interchangeably is often offensive as most deaf people are not mute.

Depending on the age you become deaf, though, you'd be effectively mute because you can't learn how to say things.

Yes, but you're still not technically mute because you can vocalize, but lack the knowledge to make it into coherent language. Also it is possible for a deaf person to learn how to speak a language.

So far, it would seem she is both deaf and mute. She has a translator for both interpreting what she says in sign language, and interpreting what others say to her.
