Re: Let's Play Advance Wars!
Well while you move in, Grit would be shooting your ass up unless you can move more than one space per turn.

Re: Let's Play Advance Wars!
If I'm remembering right, Nell said that your movement is limited when you're on a mountain. Unless that means you can't move once you get on a mountain, you can probably move more then one space.

Re: Let's Play Advance Wars!
I'll recap it for you guys: Each unit has a different number of spaces it can move, and each unit is affected by terrain differently. Troop units go up to 3 spaces, but that number is reduced in mountains. Mech units go 2 spaces. Units with treads (tanks and transports) can go over most terrains, except mountains, and most units with treads can go around 5 spaces. Units with wheels (scouts and launchers) only travel well on roads, and have the number of spaces reduced over just about everything. Tread and tire units can't go over mountains. Air units can go anywhere unrestricted. Water units are the only units that can travel on oceans (not counting air units that travel in the sky).

Are the air units considered direct combat units?

Yeah, all of them require being in an adjacent space to an enemy in order to attack.

Then Max might actually work well....

Well what would you choose, because that seems to be the tie breaker.

Re: Let's Play Advance Wars!
Well...
- Part 8 - Tough choice:
- I'm gonna take a gamble:
If it doesn't go well, I'll try Andy.
*crosses fingers*
.....Crap.....Andy wrote:What's "Fog of War"?
Really Andy?Max wrote:Please tell me you're joking.
See that gray stuff blocking your vision? That's Fog of War.
Now, I wonder where the enemy troops are hidden.Andy wrote:How do we find 'em?Max wrote:Well, recon units have a good vision range, so let's send them out first.
But if we leave them out in the open, they'll be sitting ducks.
Our safest bet is to leapfrog them from wood to wood.
Units hidden in woods are almost impossible to spot.Andy wrote:Boy, that seems pretty simple.Max wrote:You just don't know enough to realize the danger, Andy.
If we can hide units in the woods, then so can our opponent.
If we're not careful, hidden units will blow us away!
All right. Let's move out!
So yeah, if you needed yet another tutorial, there it was....
Anyway, let's check the map and intel as always:
Yeah, not much to see. :I
Win condition is the same as always, and we've already met the COs before, so let's get this started.
I was just going to try and use the troop units first and hold off on everything else, but Max does have a good idea about the recon units. I will move some troops first to see if anything is around:
Aha, a missile unit. I'll need to keep an eye out for those since I have three chopper units.
No other mountains close by, so lets try the recon units:
Whoops! That's not good! Fortunately, running into a unit like that apparently doesn't damage me, but I can't attack and it's out in the open now....
The other unit has better luck, so I think I'll try an attack on that artillery:
Boom!
The rest of my turn results in this:
Let's hope that nothing bad happens...
......Gotta learn to keep my big mouth shut...
Okay, so there's a unit nearby... Better find it quick!
That was quick!
Boom! Moving on:
And that's my turn.
Oh boy...
Fortunately, the only unit Grit hits is my rocket unit, which, unfortunately, is destroyed.
Aaaaaaand I find the rocket unit on my turn!
That'll take care of it for now. Moving on:
Uh oh..... That's going to be trouble......
Rest of my turn results:
Grit attacks, but my units hang on. My turn, I can use my power, but I'm going to hold off unitl I see what else I can find around me:
That's about it around here. Hmmmm......
I think I'll hold off on using it for now and see if I can draw out more of Grit's units first. For now:
This should do just fine, especially seeing how that chopper unit is just out of the range of that missile unit (yeah, they have a really weird firing range):
Grit does very little on his turn, so I'll probably just scout more.
I manage to find another artillery unit and take it out, plus hit a couple other units. After moving more units around, I call it a turn:
Grit uses his CO Power on his turn and takes out a scout and chopper unit on his turn......
I'm guessing he has a few units over on this island:
Well, anyway, I decide to move my ground troops in on his HQ and hope I can capture it:
Grit does nothing on his turn, which makes me feel like I'm on the right track.
I fly my chopper over towards Grit's HQ, but run into an artillery unit:
Nothing is in range, so it's not a big problem right now.
Grit hits a tank unit that could only be hit by something on that island I mentioned earlier, so yeah.... Not cool.
I decide to go ahead and use my CO Power to make sure I take out the artillery unit by the HQ:
Boom. I'll see if there's anything else hidden, then move my troops in:
Looks clear, time to strike!
Two more turns to victory!
Set up a defensive wall to make sure everything's okay, and:
Woo! Victory is mine yet again! Took a little longer, but oh well.Max wrote:Grit? Is that you?
I was wondering why I hadn't seen you around lately, and now I know.
You're working for Blue Moon!
You traitorous piece of gar--Grit wrote:Aww, Maxie. Don't be like that.
I got my reasons for doin' what I do, you know?
Man, I'm getting out of here before you get started preachin' again.
See y'all down the road!Max wrote:Hold it, Grit!
Dang! He got away.
But what's he doing with Blue Moon?
Aaaaand done:
No S rank this time, but not bad!
More coins, plus, a rank up to Jade Rat!Grit wrote:I don't see the need to get so worked up.
It's not like this was Blue Moon property to begin with.Olaf wrote:What did you say?
After all my work and planning?Grit wrote:It's common theft, man!
Nothing more, nothing less.Olaf wrote:Why, you insolent little...Grit wrote:Whoa! Hold on chief! Don't you think it's time to move out?
Like you said, the Orange Star troops are knocking on our door.Olaf wrote:Grit!
You're pushing your luck!
Don't go anywhere, you understand?
I think he does since not moving seems to be his specialty.Olaf wrote:I'll deal with you when I get back.It wasn't that bad a joke, was it?
Aaaaaanyway, we have another choice! What do you guys think? Stick with Max, or try Andy again? It's up to you!
So, until next time, see ya!

Y'know, I could've sworn that there was a Fog of War tutorial. Y'know, when you were with Nell?
Also, Max. All of the Maxiness!

Yeah, there was, so I'm not sure why they put that in there. Maybe for people who skipped the tutorial?

Re: Let's Play Advance Wars!
- Part 9 - ....let's try that again:
Max it is!Nell wrote:Andy! Max! Can you hear me?Andy wrote:What is it, Nell?Nell wrote:I've learned that this is a vital deployment point for Olaf.
If we can drive him from the region, we may just cripple his army!Max wrote:Really? This may be where we can end this conflict with Olaf!Nell wrote:That's right!
You just need to capture as much property as possible, and fast!
The first army to secure twelve properties will win this battle!
Stay alert and good luck!
So it sounds like we have a different win condition. Cool!Max wrote:Let's see... Yep, we've got bases for deploying troops, and...
OK! Understood. Let's go!
First, let's check the map!
I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map... I'M THE MAP!
........Yeah, I won't be doing that again... :P
There's also a mini map-like thing that you can bring up by pressing Start that I don't think I've shown before:
Anyway, another thing to check is the intel, but since we know the win condition and COs already, there's nothing here worth noting, so let's get capturing!
I currently have 3 bases, while Olaf has 6... There's 13 neutral bases though, so I should be able to get to 12 quite easily.
And after moving around a few more units and buying a couple more troop units, I end my turn:
Olaf begins moving his units and starts capturing 3 cities, so I better get a move on.
I move more of my units around and capture two cities, then take out an artillery unit and call it a turn:
More moving and capturing. I'm probably just going to do a turn by turn screenshot from here unless something big happens:
And now something big has happened:
I can't win.....
You may be asking why, and the reason is simple: I have no way to attack that unit that's capturing that city. Now, if you look at the number of bases:
That's the last base Olaf needs........Nell wrote:There are eleven properties on each side of the river dividing the map.
So, as long as you hold on to the ones on this side, you can't lose.
First, concentrate on getting rid of the infantry and mech units over here.
After that, you can build up some firepower and cross the river.
I noticed the part about the river, unfortunately, I was dumb and started focusing on other units, letting some of his troops get across.....
................
I'm going to try Andy this time. I think I need long range weapons in this battle to help hold off any troops that start getting close:
Intro is the same as the first time, so I won't post it again. Now, for a strategy....
.............No idea what I'm going to do, so I'm just going to do the best I can. I'm just going to post the screenshots and only post about very important stuff:
Derped up the first turn screenshot... :P
Almost got it this time.
Aaaaaaaand done!Olaf wrote:He will not be pleased with me if this losing streak continues.
Hmmm.... I wonder who that "he" is?Olaf wrote:Grit!
It's Grit?Grit wrote:Yep.Olaf wrote:Get out there and stop that cursed Orange Star Army!
Ooooohhhhh..... They were talking to each other.... :PGrit wrote:Easier said than done, Boss. You din't leave me anything to work with.Olaf wrote:Don't get saucy!
Rally the troops and do something!
I have to go and pay him my respects.
Don't fail me, Grit!Grit wrote:Well, I'll be a... Olaf just tucked his tail between his legs and ran away.
Where does that leave me?
Guess I'll mosey on down and clean up his mess.
Aaaaand that'll do it!
Yeah, I did win with Andy, but I think I could have done just as well (or maybe a bit better) if I had gone with Max again. While true, the long range units did help a little, I did find myself using direct combat more than anything.
I think the main reason that I lost the first time is that I had my units spread out too much. I was expecting Olaf to attack from multiple areas, but it seemed like he kept focusing on the northern part of the map. He did send a few tanks and stuff through the middle, but most of his troops were at the top, and that's what I needed to focus on more.
Anyway, that'll do it for this update! Next battle will be forcing me to use Max, which I don't mind, but that means there's no decisions for you guys to make.
So until next time, see ya!
