Let's play Fire Emblem - Shadow Dragon
The year was 1990. Intelligent Systems had created a new strategy RPG, perhaps the first of its kind. Named "Fire Emblem - Dark Dragon and the Sword of Light" (roughly), it was a hit - in Japan. For reasons unknown, it was unreleased in America.
Then Marth, the main character, appeared in Smash Bros., and now we have this: a remake of Fire Emblem - Dark Dragon and the Sword of Light on the Nintendo DS.
Joining me playing this game is TheCapsFan, who is playing on...one of the Hard Modes.
Yeah, there's not one, not two, but five hard modes in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. For the only time in series history, in fact; there's just three extra degrees of difficulty in the sequel, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - Heroes of Light and Shadow and Fire Emblem Awakening, the two games that have come since.
So yeah. You can either have me do Normal, where TCF will do Hard/Hard, or I'll do Hard/Hard and TCF will do Hard/Brutal. Or maybe he'll chicken out and do Normal, I don't know how he rolls.
- Fire Emblem Physics:
- Take note of the top screen.HP: 80% Skill: 40%
- Strength affects Attack if you're using a physical weapon (i.e. Swords, Axes, Lances, Bows).
- Likewise, Magic affects Attack if you're using a Tome. This actually wasn't a stat in the original; tomes just did fixed amounts of damage (...I think).
- Skill affects Hit and Critical.
- Speed affects Attack Speed, which affects Avoid and if you can double someone, and is thus the most important stat in the game.
- Luck affects Hit and Avoid, and also reduces an enemy's critical rate. Enemies usually have low - if any - Luck.
- Defense decreases physical damage done to the unit.
- Resistance decreases magical damage done to the unit. For all units in the original, this was 0 always (unless modified with an item), increasing the usefulness of magic a bit.
- Attack is the maximum amount of damage you'll do (bar if you get a critical hit).
- Critical is the chance you'll get a critical hit. Enemies will usually get a pitiful Critical; this, combined with your units actually having luck, means that you'll typically be the ones critting.
- Hit is your chance of hitting. Note how Marth's is above 100? This just means that the enemy can have 6 avoid before he isn't guaranteed a hit. Even then, it's like to hit, due to "True Hit".
- Avoid partially determines your chance to avoid an attack - it's (hit rate - avoid). I think. This, in turn, is determined by...
- Attack Speed. Not directly listed, but very important. It determines if you'll get two attacks, and affects your avoid. The formula (in this game) is Speed - (Weapon Weight - Strength), so with a Rapier equipped Marth has 7 Attack Speed (the Rapier's weight is 4).
Speaking of important things, we have growth rates. 100 Experience is a level, and rather then having fixed levels or a Cthulian level up system, Fire Emblem has growth rates - the percentage that a stat will go up on a level. Marth's growth rates, for example, are:
Str: 50% Spd: 50%
Mag: 0% Luk: 70%
Def: 20% Res: 2%
...wait, is that a 2% Res growth? Jesus, magic users are going to be godly if this is how everyone is... Anyway, this means that Marth will usually gain HP and Luck, as well as Strength, Speed, and maybe Skill; Defense is rarer, and Resistance is extremely unlikely.
Growth rates mean that a character is entirely at the mercy of the Random Number God. They could be awesome in one playthrough, but utter shit in the next. This also means that characters with good growth rates are better units more often then not (unless their bases are utter shit). So.
Anyway, that's it. - Strength affects Attack if you're using a physical weapon (i.e. Swords, Axes, Lances, Bows).

I say try and keep everyone alive.
Also, it said that there's no prologue in the hard mode, so if you both do hard, does that mean we miss out on some of the story?

I think the prologue is mostly a tutorial, with whatever story that would be covered there in the beginning of Chapter 1. Hence why there's no prologue in Hard mode - if you're doing it, you should have some grasp of what you're doing.
relaaaaaaaax TCF is here I should be able to do it

Because of your non-specificness, I can do Hard/Hard. :V

Iirc the prologue is a tutorial, it explains how and why Marth flees his country. (oops, was that a spoiler? I'm sorry :P)
Welp guys, it looks like I'm in this fo sho. Wish me luck (and I'm gonna need it, since I have no idea what I'm doing, and I've never done an LP before). I might do the same as Lief, I haven't decided.
N.B. I have very little time so I have no idea when I'll be able to do this/how often to do this

nu dude we can't both do hard/hard it won't be cool that way
Chapter 1 - Marth Embarks
Chapter 1 - Marth Embarks
- Spoiler:
giving rise to an age of fear and despair for all of its people.
A young man hailing from the Altea region appeared with a divine blade in hand.
Fang of dragon and blade of light locked in battle; and in the end, blade prevailed.
For some time after, the land enjoyed an era of peace.
He forged an alliance with an evil sorcerer who sought to rule the world, and their combined might toppled kingdom upon unsuspecting kingdom.
Again, darkness threatened to engulf the continent. It fell upon the king of Altea, sole descendant of the dragon-slayer hero, to sally forth with the divine blade and fulfill his blood destiny.
But he was betrayed by his closest ally, Gra- and both king and kingdom fell.
but at a dear cost: his sister stayed behind to buy his freedom.
So we aren't missing anything! Suck it, Normal Mode! (The last few lines change if we're playing Normal Mode in order to lead better into the Prologue.)
Fact: this map appears as DLC for Fire Emblem Awakening. Three times, in fact. Completing it the first time nets you Pr(ince, but I always read it as Private) Marth, while the other two DLC instances net you other main characters.
Though Doluna took from him his kingdom and all but a handful of knights, they could not take his life. Marth lived, and made it to the eastern isle of Talys. Talys was a small border kingdom, with no grand order of knights to boast of, but its king selflessly gave Marth use of the isle's eastern fortress. And as he saw the boy shake with anger and grief, he also gave wise counsel:
"Prince Marth," he said, "I do not doubt you love your sister something great.
But you must be patient...time is on your side. If you stay here, and grow stronger, a time will come when you can help her."
So Marth stayed in Talys, protected by its kind people, and the years went by...
Then shit starts going down.
See? All Fire Emblems begin with an Incompetent Bandit phase.
I missed the shot, but this thief right here destroyed the village. No idea how, but he did. He's not a problem, but all thieves can do that, and villages give some nice swag.
A pegasus knight flies out of the castle...
and into the fort. Where Marth is staying. Remember the prologue.
: Caeda, what is it? You look white as a sheet!
...white as a sheet?
: Marth, come quickly! It's the castle... Galder's pirates attacked from out of nowhere. They stormed the gates and cut down everyone in their path! I fear for my father's life...
: Steady, Caeda. You did well to come find us. Altea's bravest knights aren't about to hand Talys to that flock of seafowl. Come, we'll make for the castle now!
Somebody's overconfident. Then again, it is hard to not be against bandits. Especially when you have a sword.
Also, you're the bravest knights by definition of being the only knights.
Our troops spread out, and the battle begins!
Let's start by moving Marth to the village. In this game, Marth is the only one who can visit villages, for whatever reason.
Old man: The villagers have collected 10,000 gold pieces. If it please you, use the money to arm your warriors, and rid our land of those pirates.
What else would we use the money for?
Before we get started, I would like to bring up our friend, Jagen. Don't use him. I'll get into specificer specifics at the end of the update, but he's a promoted unit - meaning he'll squander EXP that our non-promoted units could use to be awesome. This happens a lot in Fire Emblem, actually.
Instead, we send our good friendSCain after the bandit. Note the arrows next to the weapons - the green arrow means that Cain has a weapon triangle advantage. This negates the +1 Attack the Thief would get from having a C in swords, as well as giving Cain +5 Hit.
Jagen then dumps all of his stuff on Cain.
Everyone else moves forward.
Pegasuses can move anywhere and not be restricted by the terrain. As a result, though, they don't get any Avoid bonuses from the terrain. ...I think.
An enemy moves to attack Abel. Javelins, by the way, have a 1~2 range, meaning that they can hit a space away. Unfortunately, they suck - note how Abel has 62 hit. Mind, he's losing on the Weapon Triangle (swords > axes > spears > swords), but that's just 5 hit.
The other enemies do nothing but move forward, and it's our turn again.
Marth moves to end the thief's life with his Iron Sword, if only because Rapiers have only 28 uses.
No one takes care of their weapons in the Fire Emblem universe, by the way. Either a weapon cannot be broken at all or it will break. Stronger weapons break sooner...somehow.
Marth got 50 EXP from that kill - thieves are worth more, for whatever reason.
Bah.
Gordin, finish this fucker up.
Bows have a range of exactly two, meaning an archer is in trouble if someone comes right up next to them.
'Atta boy, Gordin.
Everyone moves forward except for Jagen, who hides in the corner in hopes of his suckitude not affecting everyone else.
Caeda crits a pirate. Critical hits do three times the damage of a regular hit. Thank god they're usually only in the hands of the player.
Usually.
Caeda also holds the distinction of being the only one of our party members to be able to double the enemies. Well, Jagen probably could, but he sucks.
Cain polishes off the pirate Caeda started.
Draug...does this. True Hit states that he had a 89.65% chance of hitting.
Speaking of Draug, he's a Knight, which have ridiculous defense, at the cost of being slow. And being weak to magic attacks, but almost everyone has 0 Res so they basically all are. Enemies will eventually be able to double Draug, but that doesn't matter as long as he keeps on the up and up on his Defense - who cares if the enemy is able to double you, if you take as much damage total as the rest of your team who gets hit once?
Caeda rests on the fortress. Fortresses provide 1 Defense and 15 Avoid, and also heal 20% of your HP at the start of your turn. Nifty.
Continuing on the facts about Caeda, she's also the only one who has any Res now. Pegasus Knights typically have high Res, but low Defense.
You should probably guard your archers. This could have been catastrophic if the Pirate didn't miss - we don't have any means of healing outside of fortresses. Yet, anyway.
Enemy turn, and a kill leads for our first level up! By Sheeda! Let's see how she rolls...
Whoa. +1 strength on a peg knight.
Oh, and speed. Speed is good. And luck, but not as much.
Then this happens. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-

Re: Let's play Fire Emblem - Shadow Dragon
It's an old saying (since sheets used to be mostly white back in the day......I guess?)....white as a sheet?
Guest- Guest
Re: Let's play Fire Emblem - Shadow Dragon
But why would Marth say that in a game made in the 21st century?
...anyway, let's try that again.
...anyway, let's try that again.
- Spoiler:
First off in our list of differences is Cain finishing up the kill instead of Marth killstealing because I like Cain.
Which is actually the only big difference, I think, other then levels, because thieves give a lot of EXP. 50, remember - half a level.
Gordin and the Super Cavalier Bros. tag (triple?) team on a pirate.
Caeda also is being a crit machine. I felt like telling you underneath a picture of her EXP bar at 90 because.
...which uses up all of her luck and thus gets this level. Speed is good, yeah, but I still want a level to have a little more substenance to it.
...yeeeeeep. Draug just crit on a 1% crit chance. I don't know whether I should feel excited or worried.
Marth takes point at the fort because he has a sword.
A pirate takes point at Draug.
Caeda takes point at base.
Seriously, it bugs me that we lack healers or even a Vulnerary. Why, IntSys. Why - wait.
Dammit. That destroyed village probably had a few vulneraries.
See? This is why Marth is at point.
Abel and Caeda tag out.
Cain, Marth, and Gordin three team up to kill the pirate. Gordin wasn't needed, but he wanted some EXP.
Cain also affirms that the criticals were eating at my level-luck.
And Draug reaffirms that you should look at enemy range before moving.
This archer is a threat to Caeda at all times. Bows deal effective damage - 3 times the might of a weapon (which is what's added to your strength/magic to get Attack) - to pegasus knights. And wyvern riders, but they're beefier.
Reset.
This time I specifically mark the archer's range.
Note to self: if you reset again, send Caeda after this enemy thief.
This...probably wasn't the best idea...
But on enemy phase, Caeda kills him!
Hey, Gordin got a kill! Yay Gordin!
Caeda can't double this guy. I'm shocked.
Hey, Speed. And Skill. Better then just one stat, at least.
You better be happy I know you're needed to recruit at least one guy, or I'd let you die. >:I
Kill the thief!
There was a thief here. Caeda killed it. On her own.
I'm so proud of her.
Abel will wait here so the pirate will hit his face.
Also note that I gave him Jagen's items.
Cain, hold the fort.
Gordin tag teams with Caeda to kill a pirate.
Damn the rescure command for not appearing and be capable of rescuing mounted units! Damn it, I say!
I don't care if Jagen dies. Besides, he can make for a good distraction - the AI loves targeting people that can't counter (which is why it goes after Gordin), even if they can't actually hurt them.
...reset. Goddammit, me.
Goddammit, IntSys, for not providing any methods of healing at the start.
Watch him die.
Yep. *sigh* Reset. At least it wasn't due to Cadea...
Naked Jagen distraction.
You can tell I'm running out of ideas because I armed Jagen.
Respectable.
Also: no matter what, you do not want to kill with a Jegan, as that's a waste of kill EXP. No, just soften 'em up.
This would be very risky if Cain didn't have 100 hit.
Jegan critted. *sigh*
I did the math. The pirate that's in range has 12 attack. Abel has 7 defense, plus one from the fortress, and 8 HP. It is physically impossible for him to die.
Caeda also starts flying over, as most threats to her existence are gone.
What'd I tell you, eh?
From killing his assiliant, Abel takes a level from the school of Caeda.
Gordin edges closer to the group, ignoring his diminuitive health.
Draug takes Abel's place to kill the pirate.
And Marth visits the village!
: Take me with you, and you’ll be very glad you did.
God, where were you all of this chapter?! Wrys is our prie - er, curate. It's a word, though I can't fathom why they'd use it when "Priest" was used in the GBA games.
Wrys gives an example of his art on Jagen. Heal staves restore HP equal to (User Magic/2)+8; Wrys has 2 Magic, so he restores 9 HP. It gives 11 EXP to him every time he uses it. Possibly modified by levels, as when he healed Jagen he got 17. I dunno.
Gordin aims at the boss to rub in the fact that he doesn't have a ranged weapon.
He misses.
So does Abel.
Ahahahaha no.
This is proper usage of Jegan. Using him to wear down the boss, then let whoever kill him.
However, he recovers 4 HP a turn, so we need people to hit.
Alas, Jagen, you fought well for your country during your long life. May God protect you...or whatever.
...what? Hell no, I'm not restarting. He's goddamn Jagen, it's not like anything negative will come of it.
Then I find out there's an awesome character who can only be recruited via Jagen and I will weep.
I mathed this. Assuming I use Rhys' heal for the turn on Marth, he'll be left with 15 HP on the Enemy Phase, enough to survive another attack. This is assuming, of course, 33.21 chance to miss doesn't kick in (true hit!).
Speaking of! Marth got this level on the counter. Many people go to the Pegasus Knight School of level ups, it seems.
Wrys got this level up by healing Marth. It doesn't contain Magic, therefore, it sucks.
Also, this is the only time you'll ever hear this, but Jagen dying killed our damage output.
Chipping away gives Gordin this shit of a level.
Goddammit.
A kill opening is presented. I'm not gutsy, so I save-state.
It failed to be oppurtune, so I moved Marth out of the kill zone and healed him.
Next turn, the oppurtunity pops up again. I felt gutsy - Marth could cover for her.
I still save stated.
While Caeda didn't hit twice, Marth was able to compensate.
So we wait a turn for the battle to officially be over. Yeah, you routed all of the enemies. You still have to wait a turn to Seize.
Marth, just because it includes speed does not make it a good level. Stop it.
: Lad, I believe you are ready. If you wish to seek out allies in Aurelis, I will give you what soldiers I can to see you arrive there safely.
Captain Ogma is a fine swordsman, brave and true. I know he and his fighters will serve you well.
Another thing...During your travels, you are certain to meet many who despise
Doluna. Some may be hiding in villages; other may have been captured or forced to fight against their will or better judgment.
It falls upon you to find these individuals and win them over your cause.
Understood, lad? Then go! The time has come! Be patient, steady, strong: I know you will do great things.
----------------------
And that's a wrap! Thank God.
We shall honor the fallen paladin, Jegan. Even if he did suck, he died doing a great service for his country.- New characters:
- Marth:
HP: 18 (80%) Spd: 7 (50%)
Str: 5 (50%) Luk: 7 (70%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 7 (20%)
Skl: 3 (40%) Res: 0 (2%)
Sword - D
Marth is our Lord, which is typically Fire Emblem's way of saying "this character is the most goddamn important character ever". If he dies, that's it - Game Over. He did the "myrmidion lord" thing before Lyn made it cool (you get a cookie if you know what any of that meant), having a low defense growth but being quick as fuck and able to dish out some damage. That Skill'll hurt him, though.
- Jagen (who is dead):
HP: 22 (40%) Spd: 8 (15%)
Str: 7 (20%) Luk: 1 (30%)
Mag: 1 (0%) Def: 9 (20%)
Skl: 10 (35%) Res: 0 (0%)
Lances - B Swords - D
Yep. This is why Jagen sucks. He eats up EXP, and doesn't even have a 50-50 chance to gain any stat. He even has an archetype of characters like him.
Interestingly, this game buffed Jagen up a little - in the original, Jagen had a 10% Strength, Speed, Skill, and HP growth, and 0% for everything else. Then again, he didn't eat up EXP as much then, so...eh.
Also, evidently nobody told Jagen that they were allowed to have Resistance in the sequel.
- Cain:
HP: 20 (75%) Spd: 6 (50%)
Str: 7 (35%) Luk: 3 (80%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 7 (20%)
Skl: 5 (50%) Res: 0 (0%)
Swords - D Lances - E
I guess nobody told Cain either. Anyway, Cain (and by extent, Abel) is part of an archetype: the Red/Green Cavaliers. Cain, as the red one, is hot headed (his nickname is "The Bull") and has growths capitalizing on...Speed and Skill. I don't know. Anyway, Cain is like Marth on a horse, except dodgier and not hitting as hard. And he'll critical more, most likely, given his higher base skill and 50% growth.
Also, Cain, why are you using a spear? You have a higher base sword level...
- Abel:
HP: 20 (65%) Spd: 7 (50%)
Str: 6 (40%) Luk: 2 (25%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 7 (20%)
Skl: 7 (50%) Res: 0 (0%)
Lances - D Swords - E
Why do all of you have no Res we're going to get nuked by mages
Anyway, Abel...appears to be superior to Cain in every way but Luk and HP. ...somehow. Even though he's the Green CavalierTM, who focuses on HP and Luck and Strength. Goddammit, you two, you aren't conforming to your archetypes when you were the ones that made them.
- Gordin:
HP: 18 (60%) Spd: 4 (35%)
Str: 5 (20%) Luk: 4 (40%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 6 (30%)
Skl: 3 (40%) Res: 0 (0%)
Bows - D
I see, Jagen stole Gordin's growths. Gordin isn't too good, but he has potential. Unfortunately, he's a lot more "make-or-break" then other characters - a few bad levels will break all of Gordin's ability.
On the upside, he starts with a Steel Bow to compensate.
- Draug:
HP: 20 (60%) Spd: 3 (40%)
Str: 7 (20%) Luk: 1 (30%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 11 (30%)
Skl: 3 (40%) Res: 0 (0%)
Lances - D
Draug...you are not a knight. Knights have high defense, in exchange for low speed and a lack of Resistance. Draug's Defense growth is worse then his speed growth! Jesus.
- Caeda, AKA the bitch who I had to reset like 4 times for:
HP: 16 (40%) Spd: 12 (85%)
Str: 4 (20%) Luk: 9 (70%)
Mag: 1 (0%) Def: 7 (10%)
Skl: 6 (60%) Res: 6 (0%)
Lances - D
Caeda is apparently the only person who got the memo that they could have Resistance and acted on it. Even if she has no Resistance growth. Anyway, pegasus knights are fragile and not really strong(and weak to bows), but quick as hell (hello, 85% speed growth) and mage-unfriendly (as in, they resist magic). She's a glass cannon, through and through, but she's still capable of holding her own via avoid.
- Wrys, MVP:
HP: 16 (30%) Spd: 6 (20%)
Str: 0 (0%) Luk: 2 (40%)
Mag: 2 (20%) Def: 3 (0%)
Skl: 5 (20%) Res: 6 (45%)
Staff - E
Wrys may have been the MVP of that fight - because we could not have done that without him - but he takes his position as sole healer very loosely. He barely has any Magic growth, which is what healers need. He's good for now, but he'll be axed when we get a better healer.

Re: Let's play Fire Emblem - Shadow Dragon
Chapter 2 - The Pirates of Galder
- Do what you want because pirates are free; you are a pirate!:
Yar.
it never had much in the way of riches, but neither did it have much trouble. All that changed when a pirate crew fell upon the town and made it their hideout. Here, in Galder, history records Marth's first steps toward freeing his homeland.
Yar! Yar? Yar.
Yaaaaaaaaaar!
: The king has bid me and my three men join your army. Cavalry has arrived from the west, flying Grust's standard. They mean to take your life, sire. Be careful.
Yar! Ogma and his crew 'ave joined our side! He be a mercenary, a sword-user that's evasive and dishes out its a fair bit of damage. 'is mates, Cord, Bord, 'n Barst, are Fighters, axe-users that focus on killing and are masses o' HP. Bord focuses on hitting, Cord focuses on dodging, and Barst prefers on leaving his ax implanted in 'is enemy and doesn't do much.
Now, there be a few things on this map of note.
The first be this pirate. He don't hurt your forces, meaning you can leave 'im be. Or ye can have Marth talk to 'im (or 'e can talk to Marth) and get 'im on your side. 'e's the only Pirate ye'd get, so ye'd do best to recruit 'im, even if 'e is a bit slow.
The second be this pathetic landlubber. Unlike Darros, 'e will attack yer units. Bein' an archer, 'e'll be lethal to Caeda. Either Caeda or Marth can recruit 'im.
Finally, this be a save point. 'ese allow ye to make a permanent save on th' map, but only once (me thinks).
So, let's get started, mateys!
Marth moves 'ere so Darros can talk to 'im. Bord's 'ere so he kin give Darros 'is Iron Ax.
Ogma kin deal with this pathetic excuse for a pirate in one round. Steel Swords 'ave eight weight, so 'e'll suffer a mite of loss in Attack Speed, but 'e'll live.
Of note: Ogma 'as a C 'n Swords. This gives 'im +1 Attack, which is what let 'im kill the pirate. I ain't complainin'. Bord's th' only one who matches it, with a C in Axes, givin' 'im +5 Accuracy. Still ain't complainin'.
Caeda edges over to Castor, against what is probably me better judgement.
Meanin' she'll die, more or less. Eh.
Darros walks over and talks t' Marth.
Y'knae, I think Darros is th' first "other" character - characters that stand on neither th' enemies nor th' player's side.
: I've had me fill o' the piratin' life, and now I be lookin' t'start anew.
What say ye? Make me yer matey, and I swear t'pull me load.
Welcome aboard, matey.
Caeda kills a pirate.
Gordin kills a Pirate.
Draug weakens a thief, and Bord finishes it.
Darros plunders Bord's Iron Ax, and proceeds to show off why you don't bring an Ax to a sword fight.
Abel Javelins a guy.
And proceeds to disappoint me.
And disappoint me.
I'd be fine with this if it didn't mean he'd be attacked by another guy.
Never underestimate a range of two.
