Chapter II - A King and A Tower
- I dunno, okay?:
And so, we have assembled our party! Now let's go collect some stuff.
One of the things I like about the SNES and GBC remakes of this game is the little item animations.
"What is this Small Medal for?" you may ask. The answer lies right in Aliahan.
Down the well!
And...why is there a house in a well.
Good to see you too, my old friend!even though you actually haven't met these guys beforeAnyway, this is the Medal King. He's been around since IV, and has gotten into the remake of III. He's shown up in every Dragon Quest game (under different aliases), and his function is always the same: to reward you for finding mini medals. In this game specifically, he gives you a reward for every ten medals, with some in between. When we get 5 mini medals, he'll give us a Spiny Whip.
I'm going to use a mini medal guide to get most of the mini medals (there's 110, but you only need 100 to get all of the rewards), so you can see all of the stuff we can get.
I...what?
Slimes (the little blue blobs) are adorable and are in every Dragon Quest game ever. EVER. If you don't see one, you're either extremely lucky or doing something wrong. They are pitifully weak, boasting only a few hit points and rarely getting over a few points of damage. However, they have what is likely the most variations ever.
Crows hit harder and have more HP. That's it, really.
Also, why does Lief have more MP then Edgar? Thieves barely even use their MP. Only, like, two of their skills use it.
Priests can use Copper Swords. Who'd a thunk, huh?
Also,
Another small medal!
Thieves gain levels fast. Of course, the best gain (from his non-HP and MP stats) is agility, which...I think has something to do with dodge and hit rates, in addition to who goes when.
In the same fight, Lucy also levels up. Her MP pool doubles. Her HP pool...rose by three. She now has 10 HP.
Jesus.
Expel removes an enemy from battle, denying us of sweet EXP and gold. I think I maybe used it once in Dragon Quest IV. It failed and ate up most of my guy's MP.
But hey, take the good with the bad, right? 26 MP!
Here, Expel costs 2 MP. And looks cool. And works on a group of monsters. Still negates EXP, I believe, so.
Also, apparently, Slimes have 37.6% chance to dodge and a .39% chance to attack twice.
Luma also gets a horrible level up.
Also, small medal! This one can only be gotten at night.
Our mom lets us rest up for free, ala Pokémon. She also lets us loot a Medical Herb, which heals around 30 HP. Any stray ones you find can be of some use even towards the end (for conserving MP, anyway), given that HP totals in Dragon Quest aren't as high as, say, Final Fantasy (it's rare for the heroes to even get near 300 HP). I think my character had over 500 HP, but I powerleveled a lot.
Not the best, either, but hey! 4 strength!
He also learned Blaze:
Fire spell thing. Mages start with it. The hero learns it at level 2. It costs 2 MP, and deals light fire damage. No, I have no idea how elements work in this game; what I figured is that the elements just work differently. Fire is the weakest and usually targets one (but a family of fire spells can target a group), Ice magic deals more damage; what it targets depends on how high level it is; Wind spells target a group and are learned by clerics (usually), and bang spells target all.
Bleah.
Anyway, I go back to the town and get Lucy a Copper Sword, and Lief a Bronze Dagger or something.
They have the same attack power.
Eh, I get a sword on a cleric. I'm good.
Horny hares are horny. They're also hares. I have nothing else to say about then except they have the same amount of HP as Lucy and less attack.
Also, all the monster attacks in this game and the GBC remake are animated. Slimes hop forward to attack you, Horny Hares dive at you, etc.. Final Fantasy didn't do this until it was needed. Needless to say, it was awesome.
...why was the monster carrying a chest?
Let's go into this patch of forest, shall we?
The stairs lead to someplace important, while the door is locked right now.
And so is this one!
Go further down the hallway, though, and...
...
Leave, then go down for actual stuff.
Going right brings us to a staircase, which leads us to here:
while going left brings us to a staircase that goes to a cave.
Going to the staircase leads to the tower proper:
It's on an island west of Aliahan. With no other way to get to it.
Hey, guess what? Edgar died!
Against these things. Babbles (or Bubble Slimes ((why is slimes not a word?))) are, as one could guess, a step up in the slime family. They can poison with their attacks. They're like cobras, except more reoccuring.
I can't remember anything interesting about the Anteater or the Froggore, although I think the latter (or one of its upgrades) mucks around with your stats.
Anyway, while I go revive Edgar so he doesn't miss out on too much EXP, this update will come to a close. Farewell.- Current [strike:3279:
- StatutStatus]
[New spells: Blaze]
Edgar is good at killing stuff, no? Sadly, he doesn't have to be in Soviet Russia in order for stuff to kill him.
The fearless thief, Lief, sacrifices some of his "killing stuff" ability for actual stats. Although he could do with a little less points in agility...
Alas, Luma sucks. She's tied with Lucy for lowest HP (though Lucy *is* one level above her) and her inability to wield non-claw weapons is hurting her. Plus I kinda was in a rush and didn't money grind to get her actual armor.
[New spells: Expel]
Um...who knew priests could equip actual weapons? ...that's all I got.

*returned to this tab after leaving to YouTube and then dropping off the map*
I believe my computer gave up loading images at the time because when I returned some of the images had shown up.
