Let's Play Cave Story!
Welcome to my LP of Cave Story! I'll be attempting to get the 'perfect ending' in this play through. What that means is that I do certain steps that unlock other events which lead to.... Well, I'll leave that as a surprise. :fuckyou:
I'll be officially beginning this LP later (maybe tomorrow), but here's a few shots of the start up screen and the title music:

I know next to nothing about this game but it looks extremely cool
EDIT: Wow, that title theme is amazing.

I was wondering how I kept ending up here, but now I realize that jokool's signature has a link in it.

Re: Let's Play Cave Story!
Oh..... Forgot that admins could do that (remembers when Cap messed around with our profiles during April Fools day...).
Anyway, it's time for Part 1: The Cave, the Hermit, and the Village
Anyway, it's time for Part 1: The Cave, the Hermit, and the Village
- Part 1:
Sue?
You there?
It's me.
Kazuma!
I managed to get away somehow, but I've gotten lost...
I've found a shelter, but there's nothing here.
If you can hear me, please answer!
...Please?
That was the first cutscene. We'll be seeing more of him in a bit, but now, we come to the Start Point:
Cave Story OST ~ Gestation
That's the music that plays through this part. It also comes up in other places.
Anyway, there's not much here, except for some water, a Heart Refill Terminal (the box with a heart on it (used to refil the health bar and (later on) missiles), and a Save Disk (the thing next to the box (supposed to look like a floppy disk, but I derped up the shot and got it while it was sideways (it spins around)) (saves progress)).
I go ahead and save the game, then head up to the door at the top of the screen. It leads to the First Cave:
To the right is the exit, but first, I'll be heading left which leads further into the cave.
You start out with no weapon, so you have to do a bit of dodging around here. There's only two kinds of enemies in this cave: Bats (visible in the next shot (they just fly up and down in this cave, but touching them damages you)) and Critters (the little blob-like thing in that screenshot (they jump towards you to attack)).
There's also dangerous spikes that will hurt you (the red spiky things sticking out of the cave in this shot):
I continue deeper into the First Cave until I come to this:
That is a very important item up on that ridge:
Cave Story OST ~ Get a Life Capsule
There's some players that try to just go through the whole game without collecting those (called a 3HP run or something like that), but I'm not going to try that since I get hurt waaaaaaaaaaay too often....
Further into the cave, I come to more enemies and more water:
You're only allowed to stay underwater for so long before drowning....
Eventually, I reach the end of the cave:
I head to the mouth of the statue and head inside:
The hermit will do nothing but snore while you're in here (even if you try to talk to him). I head over to the treasure chest to get what I came this way for:
My first weapon!
So yeah, I'll just 'borrow' this from the old guy for now...
<.<
>.>
*runs out the door*
Another cutscene happens when we get the Polar Star:
"1 user 'Sue' found!"
Sue!
Please respond!
They're looking for you...
Are you asleep?
Your brother is so lonely...
After that scene, I can head back to where I started from and leave this cave. And now that I have a weapon, I can take out all these enemies here:
Enemies will usually drop Experience (which is used to improve your weapons (it's the yellow triangle-looking thing in the shot)). They can also drop Hearts (to refill your health) and Missiles (for a weapon that we'll see later on).
Eventually, I make it back to the start point. I save, then head to the right. I blast a few of the blocks and Critters that are in my way, then come to a door:
This door is alive though (see the red eye?)....
It's not powerful, but trying to open it damages you, so you have to blast it until it dies, revealing the exit.
After beating the door, I head through the exit, which leads to another cut scene:
I'm so hungry...
There's nothing to eat and I've been reduced to feeding on cockroaches.
...Ha-ha. That was a joke.
Ha-ha.
...If I have to though, I really will...
..... Anyway, after that, we come to another scene:
: No! I won't!
: Are you trying to protect Sue?
She's a stranger!
She's not one of us!
: Sue's a good person.
I'd never betray her!
: When the Doctor comes, you know he'll take someone away again...
If we don't turn Sue over, it might be you he takes instead.
: But... But...
: The key, Toroko!
This is where I come in:
*falls from above*
*splat*
Toroko sees an opportunity to escape and does so:
So anyway, welcome to Mimiga Village!
Cave Story OST ~ Mimiga Village
I go over to the other guy to check on him:
.... *he gets up*
: I thought for sure it was them...
I'm King.
I'm the number-one in this village.
Not that that means a whole lot, with only six of us left.
Well, seven counting Sue.
She's not one of us, though.
She's just an outsider who showed up recently.
If you talk to him again, he just grumbles about Toroko running off.
After talking with King, I head over to this:
Inside is a small room to heal and save:
And this is where I'll be stopping for now. In the next part, we'll explore Mimiga Village and find out where Toroko is. Until then, see ya!

Re: Let's Play Cave Story!
Part 2: Oh Yeah!
- Part 2:
- Last time, we had just fallen into Mimiga Village. Now it's time to explore a bit:
We'll head up to Yamashita Farm first, which is just above here on a ledge:
There's not much here, but it's still good to check it out:
We'll talk to the farmer first:
My job is to watch over the farm.
We Mimigas depend on these flowers for sustenance.
Red flowers, though, are bad news.
If you eat a red flower, they say your blood starts to boil, and soon you fall over dead!
Good thing we don't have any of those growing here.
After talking to the farmer, there's only one more thing of importance around here:
No, it's not the sprinkler...
There:
Now that I have what I came here for, I leave and head to the Reservoir:
Again, not much here, but there is an important item here in the water (it's shown as a sparkling thing below the Mimiga's fishing line):
We'll talk to the fishing Mimiga first:
Yeah, I know her.
That's the cute girl who stays cooped up in Arthur's house all the time, right?
She showed up here not too long ago.
We found her washed up right here in the reservoir.
She doesn't seem to like us much...
I don't know why, since she's a Mimiga just like us.
After talking with the fisher, we jump in the water to check out the sparkling item:
"Something gleams in the dirt..."
It's just an ordinary locket, and you can't do anything with it, but it'll come into play in just a sec.
The orange fish nearby isn't much of an enemy, but you can shoot it (although, you don't get anything from it).
We then come out of the water and run into Toroko:
Who immediately runs from us:
Following her, we come to this scene:
: No!
King is again knocked over... But he's fine:
She ran off to a shack at the bottom of the village, so we'll head there next:
When you first head in, there's nobody else inside.... Until you take a few steps forward:
She then jumps out and attacks you:
Her attacks are fairly easy to dodge (though I didn't dodge this one to show the attack) (in some later updated versions of this game, if you let her defeat you, you get a special achievement/award), and one shot from your blast easily takes her out:
She's fine though, but still a bit jumpy:
Save me, save me!!
.....Huh?
: Oh! I'm sorry.
You had me worried.
The Doctor's such a mean guy.
Popping up in our village and taking us away, sometimes even killing us...
Like my brother.
He killed my brother.
: You found it for me?
Sue gave that to me!
.....
Well... I shouldn't have it anymore.
King gets his ears all in a tangle when he sees Sue and I getting along...
You can have it.
Then the shack begins to shake:
I missed the shot, but the guy comes bursting through the door and says:
: Huzzah!
In the later versions of this game, that line is changed to "Oh yeah!" I find it funny since he just burst through the door and made a big hole:- Oh yeah!:
Anyway, back to the game:
: You can't hide, no no!
I've got the nose of a bloodhound!
Indeed you do.
*someone appears in mid air and floats to the ground*
: Misery!
I found her first!
: You--you guys're with the Doctor, aren't you!
: ......
: So you're Sue, eh?
The Doctor has called for you.
Come along, now.
: Uh...what?
I'm not Sue.
*Misery doesn't listen and summons a bubble that floats towards Toroko*
: Eyaah!
: Balrog.
I leave the rest to you.
*Misery then floats away, taking Toroko along with her*
Now it's just Balrog and I alone in the shack.
: Not AGAIN!
I always have to clean up!
And here I found her FIRST!
.....
This is a very interesting moment, as it's the only time we get to choose whether or not to fight someone in the game. Choosing not to fight doesn't change anything story wise later on and Balrog simply says something like "Oh, okay then." and leaves. I'm going to fight him anyway though:
: I knew it!
This fight is fairly simple: Just shoot at him and doge him when he comes toward you:
He has a fair amount of HP, but it's nothing to worry about.
If he gets to you, he'll grab you and throw you across the shack:
The best way to dodge is to just simply jump over him when he gets close:
He does jump occasionally, but it's easy to avoid it.
After a while, I finish him off:
We haven't seen the last of him though, as he simply jumps up and escapes:
After he leaves, this message appears:
A bit of Experience then appears around us:
I then leave the shack and head back up to the main part of the village:
There's a Mimiga up here, so let's talk to him:
*chomp chomp*
!
Toroko's been kidnapped?
Well, that's no good.
Now the only girl left in the village is Sue...
At this point, I realize that I should have explored more because he says something different if you talk to him before Toroko gets kidnapped.... Oops....
Oh well, it wasn't anything important anyway, so let's move on.
I head back to the saving and healing room to heal up and save, then head over to the area just to the right of it:
We'll check that out in a sec, but first, let's talk to this Mimiga over here by this sign:
: Oh, no!
I've got to tell King right away!
This guy's name is Jack. If I had talked to him before Toroko was kidnapped, he would have explained why the graveyard is dangerous (there's a bunch of mushroom-like creatures called Pignon that have taken over). I think he would have also introduced himself, but anyway, not really that important, so no biggie.
Anyway, after telling him about Toroko being kidnapped, he runs off to the Assembly Hall, which is where we'll head too:
Let's see what these two have to tell us:
: Toroko...
I can't believe it...
Toroko's elder brother, Arthur, was a fabulous warrior.
But he was killed by one of the Doctor's goons.
And now, I...I couldn't protect her...
: There are two keys to Arthur's house.
Toroko has one of them.
The other is hidden it the Mimiga graveyard.
The graveyard is where we'll head next, but first, there's something interesting about this fireplace:
"You see something lying beyond the flames."
We'll get to that later on in the game. Now to the graveyard:
So yeah, mainly a bunch of small Pignon here, and they're real easy to take out. There is a large one that's a bit harder because when you shoot it, it jumps towards you:
But yeah, not too hard.
There's one more enemy out here: The Gravekeeper:
If you shoot at him from the front, it won't do anything. In order to kill him, you have to jump over him and shoot him in the back while he's swinging his knife:
After beating him, I come across a extremely small character that's barely noticeable on screen (basically looks like a tiny spec moving near the graves). Talking to him, he simply says this:
While not important right now, there's an event later on that involves him. It's not story related, but I'll still cover it when I get to it later on in the LP.
Continuing to explore the graveyard, I see a door that's out of reach:
Again, not important right now, but will be later on.
After taking out a few more Pignon, we reach Arthur's grave:
"There's writhing on the tombstone:"
Here sleeps the noble Arthur, true hero to the Mimigas.
After reading the writing, we find his key:
Having what we came here for, we'll head towards Arthur's House, but first, I decide to heal and save again before heading there. I also check out one last area of the village (a small ledge above the shack from earlier):
The treasure chest on the ledge has this:
After receiving the Map System, this pops up:
"Something's written here..."
So long as you retain your spirit of exploration, surely you shall find your way out. This I believe.
Oh, I guess I should explain the controls real quick: Movement is with the left and right arrow keys, interacting with someone or an item is the down key, and the up key can be used to fire your weapon up. Also, if you're jumping, you can aim your weapon down with the down key:
Other keys used are the z key (for firing your weapon), x key (for jumping) (note, I may have mixed those two up...), a and s keys (for switching between weapons when you have multiple weapons), q key (used to open the inventory (you can see and use items you've collected here, as well as switching between weapons)), and the w key (to open the Map System (map can also be accessed by selecting it in the inventory).
I'll get screenshots of both the map and inventory in the next update, but now, let's head to Arthur's House:
We'll check out Arthur's house in the next part. Until then, see ya!

Re: Let's Play Cave Story!
I feel like I've seen Balrog somewhere before. I dunno why. And any idea why the items all have those weird circles around their names?
Also, I love the soundtrack so much.

Not sure why the items have the circles around them. I'll see if I can find out later.
One more thing (but in case any of you haven't read the second part, I'd wait until you read through it to read this):
One more thing (but in case any of you haven't read the second part, I'd wait until you read through it to read this):
- Spoiler:
- I decided to play the demo of Cave Story I have on my Wii to see what Jack (the Mimiga by the graveyard) and the Mimiga that was eating said before Toroko got kidnapped, and some of it is a bit important, so I'll post it here real quick (note, the Wii version has the newer translation of the game, but I don't think it changes this part much):
Jack: The name's Jack. I'm the number-two in the village.
Beyond here is Mimiga Cemetery.
There our hero, Arthur, rests eternally in peace.
What am I doing here?
Mushrooms have taken over Mimiga Cemetery.
So, I'm keeping watch to make certain that they don't come into the village.
Eating Mimiga: Mmm...gulp!
!
Geez, you scared me...
Sue?
Oh!
You mean the girl staying at Arthur's house, right?
She lives together with Toroko.
That girl's a real cutie.
She must be lookin' for flying dragons.
Wonder if there really is such a thing...
...Dragons that fly in the sky.
