For meowth, don't Optimize him. Have some that do a low amount of normal damage and either one or two super effectives.

As for Mega Gengar, it has been a while for me. But definitely do Mega and +5. That's usually my method, but you said it didn't work this time? Try with a Disruption Distort along with the other ones. Less money to have to save up, and very effective.

I know the feel. It took me a while on the 3DS to get him. I haven't even gotten that far in the mobile yet. :U

If I don;t optimize I either still kill him on first turn or don't kill him at all.

Thus having the one or two super effectives. Don't let combos happen too much, and make matches with the normal effective pokemon with a few super effective moves here an d there to make him weak enough to kill him on the last turn, but not before then. I personally used Togepi and Happiny, along with Mienfoo.

Yeah, the regular Meowth stage also spawns with coins.

It is literally impossible to kill Event!Meowth.

In the 3DS version, you can get up to 530 coins in the regular meowth stage. In the mobile version, if I understand correctly, you can only get 330 however. I haven't tried it out in the mobile version--I only recently learned of using the meowth stage in such a way.
