Oooh. Would it end with our RP heroes failing and Hyrule getting drowned? Because I love me some tragic stories and would love to help with this! I may even find something for my characters to fit in somehow!

between oot and wind waker, ganondorf escapes the seal years later and a great war  occurs leading to the great flood, that's the time period I'm thinking of, the time between oot and the flood

This implied to me that he was talking about the end of the timeline.

Now I can see that he's talking about "before Wind Waker but after OoT", but that's not what I got when I typed up that response.

I'm actually getting really hyped for this. Do you already have a basic idea?

All of the Zelda games take place in different periods of time, often with different Links and Zeldas. Their relationship was made in a timeline, which was only officially released a few years ago - before then it was mostly fan speculation.

There's three main "branches" of the timeline - one where Link loses to Ganon in the final battle of Ocarina of Time, one where Link wins and time-travels back to his childhood and lives that out, with the rest of the world going on without him, and the timeline that resulted from him going back, where Ganon/dorf is stopped before he becomes an actual threat.

If that flood was that slow that evolution allowed us to fly away from the danger, is it really a flood that'll kill us?

So, according to the Zelda time line in Hyrule Historia, the events of Ocarina of Time create three different time line splits.

Some information about Ocarina of Time is needed here. Because this is the most critically acclaimed Zelda game, I kinda have to give you spoilers that are not actually that huge.
Ocarina of Time starts with ~12 year old Link. He can't save the world as a kid, and ends up "sleeping" for 7 years. As an Adult, he is able to defeat Gamondorf. After he does so, he is sent back in time by Zelda to live his childhood, essentially.
This causes a split--the "Adult" time still continues on, but it now has no hero because Link was sent back in time. Ganondorf is defeated and sealed away, but he eventually breaks free of this seal and ultimately results in Wind Waker. In Wind Waker, Hyrule has been flooded. This is because, without a hero when Ganondorf returned, the Goddesses had to completely vanquish Hyrule of Evil through drowning. :)
