Re: Let's play Fire Emblem - Shadow Dragon
Chapter 2 Continued
- Spoiler:
We start of with Ogma Ogmaing the Pirate. You can't go wrong with that.
Says he’s washed his hands of pillagin' and plunderin' and wants to fight for the good of all. Hah! Right... And I’m a farmer who’s been sworn off rain...
Asshat.
Darros! Yar.
The enemy moves to attack Bord and Darros (yar). In the latter's case, it was extremely stupid, as no one else could attack Darros (yar), like the thief on the island.
Darros (yar) does much better with an Iron Ax.
And he gets thefirstsecond kill of the mission!
Bord polishes his ax on a pirate.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
See, the problem with Shadow Dragon (well, the Akaneia saga in general) is that Heal staves have 20 uses max. This wouldn't be such a problem, except we can get another one in 6 chapters.
We are in Chapter 2 right now.
Fucking hell, Intelligent Systems. Fucking. Hell.
Due to this, I will fucking give up on this game if I can't find a fucking shop that sells fucking vulneraries (which is better then Wrys anyway) soon, I will quit this fucking game.
You might not see what the big deal is. If you don't, then fuck you.
I mean, come the fuck on. Yeah, in Awakening, you couldn't get any Heal staves until...what, Chapter 3? 4?, but there staves had 30 uses, and you weren't fighting huge battles.
And before you say "but Lief Thracia 776 had only 20 uses for its staves too", Thracia 776 isn't exactly what you'd call an easy game.
Besides, then you could capture the enemy clerics and loot their staves. Here? No dice.
Abel, you're not helping.
Cain, you're helping even less. Fuck you.
Marth is also the only one with a vulnerary. Which restores 10 HP. It's kind of a lot in Fire Emblem (sort of ish?) but it only has 3 uses. It doesn't help because there's only one currently on our team.
Aw, thanks Marth. You know how to make a guy feel better.
Okay, I'm making a battle save. Marth's level (defense!) is good enough to make me pop the one save.
Caeda, why is your sprite not flipped.
Princess Caeda? Oh...I'm sorry, but me mother's sick, and the medicine don't buy itself, see...
You are the fucking worst, Castor.
So you agreed to fight for the pirates in exchange for coin...All right then. If it's gold you need, take mine. Here, this is all I have. Take it, and go to your mother's side.
But Princess...I betrayed you! ...Ach, I've been a fool! Forgive me, Princess. Let me fight for you now. Me life is yours.
I hate you now.
The worst fucking thing about these fucking heal staves is that you don't even get mileage out of their 20 uses! In Thracia 776 - the hardest motherfucking game in the franchise - they restored HP equal to Magic + 10! Wrys could be healing 12 HP right now! But nooooooooo, IntSys just had to be assholes. They just had to change the staff formula.
The worst part is, this wasn't even consistent with the way staves were used in the Akneia Saga. In the original, the Heal staff restored a flat 10 HP (but also didn't give EXP). In Mystery of the Emblem, they healed User Magic + 10. Then they changed it to this, because I don't know, it's too good for Wrys or some dumb fucking shit.
Oh, huh. The Wing Spear is effective against mounted units. Did you know that? I didn't.
Barst weakened this cavalier, so that Draug may kill it and gain a level.
Woo!
Aw man, now I can't fuck up. Speed and Defense. And HP, but. Now I just have to get rid of that pesky archer...
...what?
Using his Iron Sword instead of the Steel Sword allows Ogma to get a sufficient AS advantage and double this mofo.
And other pirate mofos, too.
Ah, Ogma. You truly are a thing of beauty.
Do I have to save Castor's sorry ass?
I move Darros over to the fort as it is the only way to heal his wounds.
Well, Marth's vulnerary, but
Death!
Now I'm just using the Iron Sword because it has more hit.
...yay? Sorry, but you're going to need more then that.
Draug is a beautiful thing, no?
I make the executive decision to heal Ogma instead of Abel, on account that a) I don't hate Ogma and b) he's actually in danger of death.
...you fucking suck, Wrys.
Death for the steel god!
He cannot fail, and there's no other enemies in range, so Abel kills the pirate.
Darrrrrrrrros ;_;
What? Reset? No. I refuse to. I got an awesome-ish level for Draug, so screw Darros. 'Sides, he has an average of 10 Skill at level 20/20. 10.
Don't worry, Darros. You are redeemed in my heart. God bless you.
And say hi to Jagen for me, okay?
Armory! (hidden: a bow)
We'll get one of everything.
Whew, we have a convoy.
Over a few turns, we get Marth to the village.
She’s gone up into the Ghoul’s Teeth to tend to the sick there. We warned her, I swear we did... Lena is our angel. If something befell her, I- No, I won’t think of it. Take this gold: we’ve 5000 pieces. Just promise you’ll use it to bring her home to us unharmed.
Sweet.
Next turn, I pop a save state and send Marth rolling. See, if he hits, Marth is doomed (unless we used a precious, precious Heal use).
Marth misses, and he hits, so I reload.
I have no idea what I'm aiming for here.
I ready.
Next turn, Ogma criticals.
Marth finishes, of course.
Speed and Defense are important, especially now. I'll take it.
Marth also nets a Steel Sword.
Now, as I hear it, you plan to march on to Aurelis...That'll take you right up through the Ghoul's Teeth.
With all due respect, sire, you're taking a great risk crossin' those mountains that's Soothsire territory. The Soothsires are fearsome bandits, always raidin' the villages and harryin' what travelers dare pass by.
And the swordsman with 'em- goes by the name o' Nabarl- he's a terror with a blade, so they say. If you go up there, keep your wits about you- or you won't come back down.
Fuuuuuuuuck. This will be fun, I bet.
And by fun, I mean god fucking damn it hard mode.- New Recruit Stats!:
- Ogma:
HP: 22 (90%) Spd: 12 (30%)
Str: 6 (40%) Luk: 3 (40%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 6 (20%)
Skl: 11 (40%) Res: 0 (0%)
Ogma continues making a problem of the fact that we have no fucking Res. Other then that, he's pretty good. He's a Mercenary, which are sword users in there purest form: able to dish out a fair bit of damage, and being able to take a hit or two.
He became even better in the sequel, where he got awesome growths. Then again, so did everyone else. Dammit, Shadow Dragon.
- Barst:
HP: 24 (85%) Spd: 9 (30%)
Str: 10 (70%) Luk: 5 (40%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 6 (15%)
Skl: 6 (40%) Res: 0 (0%)
Barst is where Shadow Dragon being a jackass rears its ugly head for the first time (at least, notably). In the original, Barst had no growths lower then 50% (besides Weapon Level, and that's not particularly important, and obviously Res, because no one had Res). Here, Strength (and HP, but it's HP, it always does that) are the only ones that are over 50%. The worst part is what it did to his Defense - he's now as fragile as the rest of the company. Goddammit, Intelligent Systems.
- Bord/Cord:
Bord
HP: 20 (90%) Spd: 7 (10%)
Str: 8 (55%) Def: 5 (10%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Res: 0 (0%)
Skl: 4 (45%) Luk: 1 (35%)
Shadow Dragon being an asshole continues, as Bord also had a 50% Defense growth before Intelligent Systems decided everyone should have low defense when your healing options are relatively limited.
Cord
HP: 20 (80%) Spd: 9 (40%)
Str: 7 (50%) Luk: 5 (40%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 5 (10%)
Skl: 5 (20%) Res: 0 (0%)
Bord incurred a 30% Defense growth penalty (and a 20% HP growth penalty), but he arguably gained the most from it, gaining 20% more Strength (growth). He's also quick, so it's less of a problem for him then it is for everyone else, especially now that he can hold his weapons.
Fun Fact: in the original, Bord and Cord shared their portrait. I'm not kidding.
- Darros (who is dead, yar):
HP: 21 (90%) Spd: 7 (10%)
Str: 6 (60%) Luk: 3 (40%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 5 (30%)
Skl: 2 (20%) Res: 0 (0%)
Apparently everyone else's defense went to Darros to make him not-sucky, because he did in the original. To an extent, he still is - he has a 10% speed growth, and a 20% Skl complimenting a 2 base. Axes aren't accurate to begin with, and his low skill complicates that. Of course, he can walk on water, but given that a fair few maps in the game don't have water, it doesn't really work out.
- Castor:
HP: 21 (40%) Spd: 6 (40%)
Str: 7 (40%) Luk: 3 (20%)
Mag: 0 (0%) Def: 4 (20%)
Skl: 3 (40%) Res: 0 (0%)
Castor, if anyone, suffered the transition to Shadow Dragon harder then anyone, getting a 50% loss in stat growths: 30% from HP (making him have the lowest HP growth I've seen in recent memory) and 20% from Strength. He's still better then Gordin, Strength-wise, but still.

....Someone else died.... I thought I said try to keep everyone alive?
*sigh* Okay, as long as the cute girl doesn't die again, just do what you can.

Dude, in war, there are casualties. Sometimes, people gotta die for the good of the cause, y'know?
Besides, the key word is try. I didn't actively try to make Darros die, I just slipped up. And decided a level where Draug hit his Speed and Defense growth was more valuable then a guy who, by level 20/20, on average, will have a whopping 10 Skill.
And yeah, I'll reset to keep Caeda alive. She's very important, needed to recruit some enemies and also is Marth's canon love interest.
And everyone else too, of course. It just depends on how close they are to the end of the map.
besides, you told me to go on Hard/Hard, increasing enemy stats, this is partially why Darros died

This game is so confusing-looking. @~@ Everything's so cluttered together. How can anyone read what's going on?
