They do. My cats respond very well to their real names/real nicknames, and to some other words. :) For instance, Butters will come running if you mention catnip, quicker if you shake the bag. Callie gets excited to go outside, but when it gets dark she will come back when called, or, at our old house, she would jump on the porch railing and meow at us from outside the kitChen window.
Butters has learned to recognize my dad's footsteps (dad is Butter's favorite) and will leave me to go hangout with dad. (The stinker)

She'd do it a lot while I'd be washing dishes. She'd wait until we start walking over to the door before she jumped down.
