To give a serious answer, the way I see it, fighting games are two characters in opposite sides of the screen trying to defeat the enemy with a wide variety of moves. I don't claim to know anything about fighting games because like I said, I don't like most fighting games, but if Smash Bros. isn't a fighting game then I don't know what it could be. It's two characters on opposite sides of the screen trying to beat each other up with a wide variety of moves. There aren't traditional "combos" in the usual fighting game sense, but... that's why I like it!
