Strong in the Real Way was a good song! I really like how they have songs for the especially emotional moments, but don't go out of their way to include one in every episode or anything. It's just that much more powerful when they do sing.
Also, holy shit they got Nicki Minaj to voice [spoiltext]Sugilite[/spoiltext]? That's pretty cool! :O

Surely it can't be that hard to find someone who sounds like Nicki Minaj.

And now I've just watched "An Indirect Kiss," so now I know where my avatar comes from~
That was probably my favorite episode so far. I'm a sucker for framing devices, and the framing device of Connie and Steven having a picnic and talking about the fence around the cliff just feels really natural. I dunno. It's just such a nice setup. And seeing their friendship develop just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. ;w;
Also, god Steven's "That's what it felt like" hit hard. ;;
EDIT: Also that moment where [spoiltext]it looks like the Rose Quartz statue is reaching down to Steven[/spoiltext]... ;A;

I just watched "Mirror Gem"/"Ocean Gem" and
Honest to god
That was really, really, really beautiful
Like
I really feel like this series is moving into "Something Else" territory past this point. I'm really excited to get into the meat of the plot. And [spoiltext]Lapis Lazuli[/spoiltext] is a really interesting character that I hope to see more of.

This post is just pure ramblegushing and I am very sorry
help how do i choose a favorite character
I am currently revolving between Garnet, Connie, and Lapis
I cannot choose a single one of them over another

- my reactions to some of the episodes I've watched today! spoilers unmarked below:
- House Guest
Greg is such a well-done character. I like how he plays the bumbling dad role without actually straying too far into "joke character" territory—in fact, it really just serves to humanize him. I remember watching "Laser Light Cannon" and being stricken by how realistic he was.
Space Race
Once again, loving Greg here. His advice is always top tier.
One thing I really noticed, though, was the parallel between Lapis and Pearl. Both extremely heartbroken by how long they've been away from home. Both willing to go to extreme measures, and not pausing to reason, to reach their home. (Even though Pearl is clearly comfortable and happy on Earth, she doesn't seem at home—there are moments when it's clear that she still sees herself as above most of its customs—like her whole speech about the "short lives" humans live in "Keep Beach City Weird.")
Secret Team
This was an alright episode, though it kinda felt a bit thin. I did like Steven coming clean to Garnet, though. And it establishes the relationships between the Crystal Gems in a way that was only somewhat present before—Pearl being Mom 1, Amethyst being Mom 2, and Garnet being Mom Supreme :V
Island Adventure
Gotta be honest. I wasn't a big fan of Lars before this. He just seemed too arbitrarily cynical about everything, which I think was deconstructed nicely in this episode. And it solidified my love for Sadie, who remains probably my favorite Beach City resident.
Keep Beach City Weird
To be honest, I don't care much for this episode. Though Ronaldo's prediction re: Diamond Authority, space rock aliens was pretty spot-on. :B
Fusion Cuisine
Things I like this episode for: Alexandrite. More development on Steven and Connie's relationship. Drawing focus to Connie's issues with her parents.
Things I don't like: The dinner cringe comedy. Not a fan of cringe comedy.
Connie's parents are actually really overbearing and I don't feel like this episode really addresses that very well.
It seems to chastise Connie lying to her parents, more than it does her parents' complete control over her life. Connie's lying is justified; her parents have proven that they disapprove of anything which could make her comfortable. They teach her to expect punishment for not adhering to their strict standards.
And I think it's causing her a lot of anxiety. That's why she lies to her parents, because it's the quickest way to avoid thinking about all that anxiety, like how she would explain Steven healing her sight or his three moms.
But when she puts it all off with lying, the guilt and blame just keeps piling up and it compounds into one giant moment of absolute fear.
Think about it. Her immediate reaction to her parents finding her out? She runs away. When she and Steven get to the road, she doesn't hesitate to suggest that they jump on a bus and leave their families and their town forever. If that's your kid's first reaction, you're doing something wrong with your parenting.
Garnet's Universe
Ahhhh!!!! This was such!! a cute!! episode!! x3c
I just loved Garnet's interactions with Steven at the beginning, and how much he clearly idolizes her, what with her supreme strength and goodness in his story and whatnot. Garnet's momship towards Steven is some top tier stuff and I just love their relationship a lot and feel it needs to be appreciated. ;w;
Also, I like how the regular voice actors do various characters' voices here. I could pick out Pearl, Amethyst, and Lars as different characters in Steven's story.
Watermelon Steven
Kind of a forgettable episode. Greg/Steven bonding at the beginning was fun, though.
Also, Onion is definitely chaotic evil. :V
Lion 3: Straight to Video
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
This is the kind of episode I love. It starts out really innocently simple (Steven being frustrated by Lion), and then it gracefully phases into something utterly heartwarming. The home video was really natural-feeling, like it really was just a couple recording a video together on the beach.
And on the subject of the video. Rose Quartz. is so. beautiful!!! Like, I swear to god. I wasn't expecting it when she swiveled the camera around, and she is honestly just so well-designed, and her dialogue is just simply beautiful, and they really get across how much she cares about everything and everyone so easily. It's easy to see why the Crystal Gems loved her, and why she loved Greg. She is honestly just such a beautiful person and I loved her message to Steven. Especially the bit about self-love which is so!! important!!, just such an important message for absolutely everyone. It's an important message for kids to learn and internalize at a young age, and it's something that a lot of adults could really learn from too. The show really has a way to communicate concepts that seem simple, but are actually extremely difficult to learn, such as self-love and trust in relationships and acceptance of mistakes and it's just. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa i love it so much
Warp Tour
Oh wow, I didn't expect to see Peridot this early! This was pretty cool, because I actually wasn't expecting her in this episode until the bot crashed into the beach house. It does a good job of establishing the larger conflict between the Crystal Gems and Homeworld, although I can't judge that too much because I've been spoiled on quite a lot. :V
Seeing the Gems so scared and Garnet so fierce was disconcerting, too.
Alone Together
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I love love love love love love love this episode!!
This episode was actually really important to me even before I watched it. This and "Keystone Motel" were the ones that really got me to look into the show more. I remember seeing a post from one of the Crewniverse (I think it was Matt Burnett?) that basically said that Stevonnie is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. At the time, I was experimenting with the term genderfluid, and seeing that basically made me go "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I love how the Gems try to teach Steven about the technical aspect of fusion, all the dancing and whatnot, but it turns out the most important part of fusion is the trust between both parties. And then that thread is continued with the whole donut thing where the Connie side of Stevonnie hesitates because she's not allowed to eat donuts, and the Steven side makes sure she's okay with this, and only proceeds when she makes it clear she's fine with it. That sort of stuff is very important.
Connie's anxiety really shows through during the rave. One part that I noticed was when Stevonnie noticed that they were the only one on the dance floor actually dancing, because they couldn't tell everyone else was just stunned by them just waltzing in and stealing the spotlight (in a good way). Their whole dialogue of, "Wait, why isn't everyone else dancing? Am I not supposed to be dancing? Am I doing something wrong?" really sounds like the beginning of an anxiety attack.
And then everyone around them grows taller, and they start to feel isolated and wrap themselves up in a (disco) ball and try to escape, that's a very accurate representation of an anxiety attack. And the show presents a very good tactic for lessening that anxiety: 1) Get yourself out of the uncomfortable situation if you can, and 2) Find someone else to be with who can assure you that you are doing everything just fine, and who will join you in everything you do, and support you if you want to back out.
Basically the episode just wraps together all of these amazing, super super important themes (gender, self-love, trust, consent, dealing with anxiety, etc.) in such a beautiful, concise, powerful 11 minutes, and I love it very much and I'm sooo jealous of the kids growing up with this stuff because it's really really important to establish these ideas early in life.
Oh yeah, and Garnet's reaction to Stevonnie was cute. uwu

I've watched up to "Sworn to the Sword" now, which was a fantastic episode~ Do It For Her was one of my favorite songs in the series so far. Besides Stronger Than You, of course.
Can I just ask where you found this? I can't seem to find it posted anywhere else. :BBurnin' Bunnies wrote:I don't even watch this show
