Recommend me ALL of the things!
Now that I have great Internet connection, I can now nerd out with everyone else to my heart's content. So! Recommend me something. Absolutely anything. A webcomic, anime, live-action TV, cartoons, a movie, anything that I'd need the Internet to enjoy. This includes Netflix.
In your comment, list the name of the work, the bare essentials of the plot, and why you like it. I'll handpick my favorite ones and add them to my personal list. Can't guarantee I'll look into it, I'm still limited by time, but I need somewhere to start.
So GO!

Western Animation:
- Spoiler:
- Gravity Falls (2012)
Episodes to date: 36
Runtime per episode: 24min
Twins Dipper and Mabel Pines spend the summer with their great-uncle Stan expecting a regular boring summer in the town of Gravity Falls. This quickly turns out not to be the case as they are pulled into all the mysteries of the town.

What a delightful, charming, humorous series, I can't recommend it enough. It's a labor of love by series creator Alex Hirsch who refuses to pull any punches just because it's a series aimed at kids in terms of quality. There are so many little hints and codes throughout the episodes, some just for a one-time gag, others contributing to the over-arching plot. (With the pay-off for one of the biggest fan theories being nothing short of amazing in delivery.)- I think one of the biggest reasons for its success is how they handle the relationship between the twins:
- Alex is really involved with the fan too, it's great. Guy's got his own fandom separate from the show.:
- msdiscolady wrote:I was taking a rest after a morning of camping out for panels over by the The New Children’s Museum and I noticed Alex with his Grunkle Stan puppet walking down the street. I freaked out and after following him down the street (sorry for creepin’), got the courage to ask for a photo. The man taking my photo was just going to get Stan and me, but I was like “No, I know you and think you are really awesome and I love the show” (all very awkwardly I might add.) No contract or Stan Bucks, but getting a picture was great in itself.
- One of my favorite lines from the show so far:
- Mabel in The Deep End wrote:Dipper! Don’t you know what it’s like to fall for someone... even though you know in your heart that it’ll probably never work out… but you would do anything for that person?”
- Over the Garden Wall (2014)
Episodes: 10
Runtime per episode: 11min
Two brothers find themselves lost in a mysterious land and try to find their way home.

Yet another delightful, charming, humorous series, and yet another labor of love, this time by Patrick McHale. Great atmosphere and a rich story in nice little compact bits.
After 9 months with no news about this series I preordered a copy of the DVD as soon as I learned of its existence.- Spoiler:
- Steven Universe (2013)
Episodes to date: 70
Runtime per episode: 11min
The last of the new holy trifecta in cartoons.
You already mentioned that you wanted to check it out so I'm guessing you already know the basics. It takes awhile for things to pick up but once it gets going holy shit is it good. It's like the perfect pick-me-up; there's just so much positive and upbeat energy in this series, and character interactions that are really a joy to watch. (Lux covered it in a lot more detail.)- I fuckin' love Pearl (and pretty much everyone else tbh; this show's got a great main and extended cast):

I don't know which ones you read but Cucumber Quest is good.
Not right now, I'm saying we are going to make him into one.Lief Katano wrote:Is Caprizant even a duelist?

That is all.
Buy seriously, Cucumber Quest is wonderful! It really plays against the typical hero story--Cucumber is "the Hero", but doesn't want to be. He wants to go to the school of his dreams to practice magic. Instead, he has to save the world as the reincarnation of the legendary hero.
His sister Almond, on the other hand, wants to be a knight. She is great at sword fighting and is all for the heroic adventure, despite the role of "the Younger Sister".
They meet a wimpy knight, Carrot, who loves the princess, along with other great and lovable characters.
As sweet as the story sounds (and is), there are plenty of tense encounters. Chapter 3 just finished, and boy was it getting dark/deep. Every single character is plotted out in such great ways, and the emotional Rollercoaster both the reader and the characters go through is amazing.
Other webcomics I would recommend are:
Namesake
The Boy Who Fell (more like a manga, actually. Reads right to left and starts out in manga greyscale)
Sakana
Awaken
Namesake: Emma Crewe was an unknown Namesake until the day she accidentally wound up in Oz. With the help of her sister and her closest friends from this world and Oz, she might just wind up saving everyone.
Gets Uber deep and can get a little confusing, but it incorporates tons of fairy tales in a very interesting manner. The authors, Isa and Meg, have really done their research.
The Boy Who Fell revolves around an innocent, softhearted and almost-spineless boy named Ren who suddenly finds himself in Hell after accidentally falling off a school rooftop. He is then forced to partake in a tournament full of powerful and vicious beings in order to attain his only way of going home: an all-powerful wish from the ruler of Hell himself.
As the story progresses, lines between allies and enemies are blurred, dark pasts are revealed, political issues come to light and all the while, Ren slowly realizes that in order to survive this journey, he might have to give up the very things that make him human.
Sakana: A thrilling tale of two socially dysfunctional brothers working at the largest fish market in the world, and the things they must do to get paid, make friends and date ladies.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! :D I've added a lot of them to my list.

I was on the fence with this series before, but this makes it sound really cool :oKhaki Makoto wrote:Orphan Black (2013)She's incredibly talented, making each role she plays on the show distinct (which is why it's always a blast seeing one clone pretending to be another clone). A Canadian treasure and a joy to watch.candypolis wrote:This is why Orphan Black is so beautiful as a feminist series. In addition to excellent queer representation, and amazing, well rounded, complex female characters, Orphan Black is in essence a metaphor for the fight against patriarchy: the right of women for agency and control over their bodies and lives, free from men who seek to control and objectify them. The act of creating clones is, in itself, a metaphor for men’s objectification and control of women’s bodies. For the Clone Club, then, the process of becoming self-aware, seeking answers, fighting for their lives and freedom, demanding information, finding solidarity in one another, all of this is an act of resistance.Tatiana wrote:The beautiful and horrific thing about the patent storyline is that, for me, it resonated as a woman—this idea of your body, your personality and your image not being yours. As an actor, I understand that and the more I’m in a public consciousness, the more I understand that role a lot of women are forced to take, which is about giving up a lot of your identity to serve the public. For me, it was really incredibly resonant point in terms of the ownership women have over their bodies.
I figured Gravity Falls had a lot more episodes than that. Now that makes me even more motivated to watch it, because I probably actually have time for it :VKhaki Makoto wrote:Gravity Falls (2012)

That's a bit misleading on my part since it's the ED, but the animation in the actual show is gorgeous too!Cap wrote:Sooooo prettyyyyyy *o*

I went in blind because a friend recommended it to me saying it was one of the best shows currently on TV. Did not regret it. We watched the first season and second season premiere together this past June, then I marathoned the rest of it with my sister in roughly a week (because our cable box was nice enough to have it all on demand).
The rest of that tumblr post I linked to contains spoilers for the last couple of episodes of season one, but it does address OB's less-than-stellar handling of PoC characters. That, combined with the aforementioned convoluted plot of season 3, is kind "eh" to say the least, but overall I really enjoy the show. Nothing can top that torturous season one finale; no one could refuse to renew it for another season after seeing that.
It's been three years and we're still in season two. T_T
Alex addressed this in his first AMA (link here, though beware the spoilery images on the right):
Again, I think this further emphasizes how the show is a labor of love.Alex Hirsch wrote:

About the Blendin thing, I've never been on Reddit before so this is my first time. For the other thing:Snivian_Moon wrote:Thanks very much for holding this AMA, and even more, thanks for making such an awesome show for everyone to enjoy. I'm consistently impressed by each and every episode of Gravity Falls. Seriously, the amount of planning, hard work, and amazing talent that go into each episode really shows, and I'm confident that season two will be no different. Thank you for making something fantastic. And on a more frivolous note, thank you for one time tweeting a silly gif I made, too.
Two question I did have for the Mayor of Gravity Falls, the Sultan of Colossal Super Awesome:
- Can you provide any insight into the way new episode releases were scheduled? Two hiatus periods within the first season seemed really odd. The show took a super long break just when it was gaining a lot of momentum, and I just can't reason why.
- Any insight into reddit user /u/BlendinBlandin, who showed up around reddit looking for a calculator well before the airing of "The Time Traveler's Pig"?
Thanks for asking about programming. I have to be careful in the way that I answer this because there's a lot of parties involved, but let me put it like this- there are TWO reasons the schedule was that way it was in Season 1:
1) THE SHOW IS HARD! Season 1 was a monumentally difficult undertaking, it was my first time making a TV show. We were also doing something that had never been done before on the Disney Channel- a script based 22 minute animated comedy with serialization. Given how many balls I had to juggle, I would occasionally drop one, meaning that we would be a month or two late on an episode. Entertainment is always a struggle between perfectionist artists like me and the people who pay the bills, and sometimes I would pull my end of that rope too hard. I have no regrets about how hard I worked or how much I cared, but I know we would have had less hiatuses if I was less specific with my vision
2) DISNEY'S PROGRAMMING STRATEGY-
I work with a lot of smart, hard-working folks at the Disney Channel. They give me an immense amount of support, understand the shows value, and want to make the show a hit as much as I do. That being said, we don't always see eye to eye on the best way to execute this mutual goal. Often episodes are held in order to be played during the seasons or events that the programming department has calculated will get the highest ratings. All channels do this, its their job, and I've been told it works.
Personally, I'm not that interested in ratings. If I had my way, we'd air the episodes as soon as we finished them. There was actually going to be an 8 month hiatus in the middle of season 1 that I argued down to 4. I always always want to get you the shows as soon as possible. But these are the compromises that come with working with big companies.
Pros and Cons, guys!
That first hiatus was a killer though, no joke. I rewatched the first 12 episodes at least twice during those long four months.
There's currently 2 DVDs available containing the first 14 episodes. Normally I'd just opt for a season boxset, but I dunno if we're going to ever get that and I wanted to support the show, so I ended up buying those.
Disney is such a huge tease though it has the "commentary does not reflect Disney's positions on anything" spiel pop up when you pop in the DVD but then there's no commentary track on any of the episodes what the shit
