Recommend me ALL of the things!
Now that I have great Internet connection, I can now nerd out with everyone else to my heart's content. So! Recommend me something. Absolutely anything. A webcomic, anime, live-action TV, cartoons, a movie, anything that I'd need the Internet to enjoy. This includes Netflix.
In your comment, list the name of the work, the bare essentials of the plot, and why you like it. I'll handpick my favorite ones and add them to my personal list. Can't guarantee I'll look into it, I'm still limited by time, but I need somewhere to start.
So GO!

Re: Recommend me ALL of the things!
I don't have a whole lot to say right now, but if you haven't read the manga +Anima, I highly suggest it! I guess reading a manga doesn't exactly require unternet, but +Anima won't be that easy to find, being a lesser known and a bit older of a manga.
+Anima is about the adventures of Cooro as he trues to find a home as an Anima, someone (mostly children) who can have the powers of an animal when necessary. (For instance, Cooro can fly because his animal is a black raven. He can have wings.) On his journey to find a home, Cooro meets Husky, Nana, and Senri, other Animas, and beautiful friendships are born! ;v;
I really like +Anima--it is fun and silly, yet there can be (and are) some great feels. It is about friendship and general kindness. It touches on subjects like prejudice and abuse, which can be hard to talk about, but the way +Anima handles them is simple and really adds to the plot. The world +Anima takes place in is very well developed, and though the story is not incredibly long or well known, it is definitely, to me, a must read.

I do, indeed, need a good connection to enjoy manga. I don't live close to the library, which doesn't have much to choose from anyway. I don't have a job, and if I did my extra money would go towards music, so buying is out of the question. So I'm stuck with the Internet, which, until this afternoon, was limited to 50GB a month and pretty slow :B
+Anima sounds pretty interesting, thanks for the suggestion!

I don't have Steam. Despite having good Internet now, I don't think my current laptop could handle most games. Maybe with the next one. :V
I can still add recommendations to my list, though.

That's true. Might be slightly laggy, but you should be able to duel.
Movies: Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Life is Beautiful, Lagaan,The Last Samurai, Shrek the Third
or if you need comedy: Kikujiro, Norbit (it has really low ratings, but it's hilarious), Dumb and Dumber, Bruce Almighty
Anime/Manga: Trigun, Fullmetal Alchemist, FMA Brotherhood, Kimi ni Todoke, Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, Ginga Densetsu Weed, Princess Jellyfish, B Gata H Kei, Barakamon
Cartoons: I was recently recommended Bob's Burgers
Live-action shows: Parks and Recreation, Everybody Hates Chris, Supernatural
If you decide to watch any of the anime or movies I listed, let me know what you think of them! They happen to be some of my favorites. :)

Steven Universe. Steven is a boy who is half human half magical gem creature who is finding his place among the Crystal Gems, 3 gem creatures who are fighting to protect mankind. Sounds very cliche until this main point: Where most works would focus on the mundane being solved in magical ways, Steven Universe is the opposite, the magical solved in mundane ways. Be it talking it out, a hug, tennis skills, throwing a refrigerator at a giant centipede. The best thing though, is that the characters are fleshed out and have a full spectrum of emotions. They make mistakes, they cry, they hurt each other (actual emotional hurt, not just the 'now I'm mad until the end of the episode >:() but also laugh, play, and love (actual family, lovers, and friendship love, not just the I love you cause plot). If you check it out, the show grows its beard when it reaches the episode So Many Birthdays, everything before then is just character introducing and basic plots. Also the best reason to check it out is that it is at its core, a show about optimism, and seeing the good in everything. After all if every pork chop were perfect, we wouldn't have hot dogs
Another show to check out is We Bare Bears. If the name didn't get you yet, its about three bear brothers who basically have fun shenanigans. That's why you should watch it. It is just three cartoon bears having fun, being whimsical and happy, and so dang optimistic. The thing that sells it is the characters. Grizz, a fun loving grizzly bear who's goal in life is to make friends. That's it, and he's so dang adorable and optimistic because of it. Panda is a panda and is us. Internet otaku who's two goals are...getting a girl friend, and maintaining his awesome internet rep...and he has a cell phone. Then there's Icebear...who is only explained as Icebear. Basically he is a genius and awesome and stuffs. Also he sleeps in a fridge with an ax. Also it is made by a former Pixar story artist who worked on Inside Out and Cars 2 I think :T

I second Parks and Rec, Steven Universe, and Princess Jellyfish!
If you have Netflix and like crime dramas, then Psych is Great!

Anime:
- Spoiler:
- From the New World (2012)
Episodes: 25
Runtime per episode: 24min
In the future Japan has become a fractured country, and small towns now exist. The rulers of this world have the cursed power of Telekinesis. When an incident occurs, 5 children come to realize the world is not as it seems, and learn the bloody history behind this world. These 5 children unite and help the world as it falls into a downward spiral of chaos.

The only anime series I have encountered in recent times to skip the OP so that they could have more screentime in each episode.
There's a lot of series that, while I adore them, lack in content in some shape or form that prompts me to look to the fandom for supplemental material. *coughPokémoncoughRWBYcough* This is not one of them. Everything is just handled so perfectly that I want for nothing, as everything is wrapped up by the end. I think it helps that there are a few timeskips and you get to see the characters at various points in their lives.- Spoiler:
- Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (2004)
Episodes: 24
Runtime per episode: 24min
Loosely based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. It tells the story of Albert Morcerf, a young aristocrat who happens to befriend a wealthy nobleman, The Count of Monte Cristo, through a series of bizarre events. Fascinated by the Count's charm, Albert invites him to meet his friends and family, all of whom happen to be part of the upper class society of Paris, France. Unfortunately, little does Albert realize that the Count has ulterior motives in mind.
---
The ultimate revenge story with a perspective swap. From the enigmatic and charming count to the whiny teenaged son of his former fiance... eh, I like Albert in here so it doesn't bother me much, but I know some people weren't too happy about it. xDAlso it's set in the future (5053) so it really doesn't make sense why there's still this aristocratic set-up in future France... or why people can't just call each other up to avoid misunderstandings... but fuck do I still love it. It's pretty notable for it's unique animation style, which can be headache-inducing for some, but I think it's gorgeous. Plus if you watch the dub you get to listen to Jamieson Price's sultry voice for 24 episodes as the Count.- Hmm, yes, good:
- Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (2009)
Episodes: 26
Runetime per episode: 24min
One day a Japanese tourist witnesses a murder committed by one of the mafia's human weapons, called "Phantom." He is then captured and brainwashed to become a Phantom himself. In order to regain his memories and escape from this criminal underworld, he'll go along with their plans for now.

Gotta love that title. When someone showed me the second OP for this like a year or two before I actually watched it, I had a much different idea of what the show would be like. But then again it is Ali Project, they definitely have a niche for the grim and gothic.
In general I like series revolving around mafia, so that's how it caught my interest. I quickly became invested in the main characters who got dealt a shit hand in life and wanted to see how they would escape from these grim circumstances.- Spoiler:

- Spoiler:
- Orphan Black (2013)
Episodes to date: 30 (3 seasons)
Runtime per episode: 44min
A streetwise hustler named Sarah Manning is pulled into a compelling conspiracy after witnessing the suicide of a girl who looks just like her.
---
Okay so any commercials for the show nowadays make this obvious, but by the end of episode 1 you know something is up with all these look-alikes, and by the end of episode 2 it's confirmed that yes, they are clones, so I'm not giving too much away by revealing that. It isn't the first series to focus on such a topic, but man does it do it well. (At least in the first two seasons. Season three is, er, kind of convoluted, but not unwatchable imo.) The main focus is a group of women with no idea why there are these other women who look just like them, but dammit they're going to find out with or without the help of outsiders, because they are no one's property.
And then the star of the show, Tatiana Maslany.
She's incredibly talented, making each role she plays on the show distinct (which is why it's always a blast seeing one clone pretending to be another clone). A Canadian treasure and a joy to watch.candypolis wrote:
This is why Orphan Black is so beautiful as a feminist series. In addition to excellent queer representation, and amazing, well rounded, complex female characters, Orphan Black is in essence a metaphor for the fight against patriarchy: the right of women for agency and control over their bodies and lives, free from men who seek to control and objectify them. The act of creating clones is, in itself, a metaphor for men’s objectification and control of women’s bodies. For the Clone Club, then, the process of becoming self-aware, seeking answers, fighting for their lives and freedom, demanding information, finding solidarity in one another, all of this is an act of resistance.Tatiana wrote:The beautiful and horrific thing about the patent storyline is that, for me, it resonated as a woman—this idea of your body, your personality and your image not being yours. As an actor, I understand that and the more I’m in a public consciousness, the more I understand that role a lot of women are forced to take, which is about giving up a lot of your identity to serve the public. For me, it was really incredibly resonant point in terms of the ownership women have over their bodies.- Spoiler:
- Twin Peaks (1990)
Episodes to date: 30 (2 seasons)
Runtime per episode: 47min (Pilot: 94min)
An idiosyncratic FBI agent investigates the murder of a young woman in the even more idiosyncratic town of Twin Peaks.

One of the many series that influencedX-File BabiesGravity Falls. It kind of dips in quality halfway through the second season, but picks up again for the finale, making its cancellation back in 1991 all the more tragic. But after 26 years there's finally going to be a resolution to the seriesnot counting the movie Fire, Walk With Me which poses more questions than solving past onesIf you enjoy seeing the mysteries of a seemingly quaint and innocent town become unraveled, give it a go.
As a side note, Deadly Premonition in its early stages of development was practically Twin Peaks: The Videogame under a different name.- Spoiler:

- The Cabin in the Woods (R)
Runtime: 95min
Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for.

Prior to viewing this movie I would have never imagined a merman or a unicorn in a horror film. I went in thinking it was a generic horror flick, which was done intentionally in all the trailers and commercials for it, and I was blown away. Joss Whedon describes the film as a "love letter" to the horror genre, showcasing what they enjoyed and lamented about the genre in the present in this wonderfully executed deconstruction.- I love Marty aka the Shaggy of this movie so much:
- It Follows (R)
Runtime: 100min
A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after getting involved in a sexual encounter.
"It could look like someone you know or it could be a stranger in a crowd. Whatever helps it get close to you."
---
I heard a lot of good things about this movie prior to seeing it. It focuses on the prevalence of sex in the horror genre (namely "doomed by sex") and makes it the focus of the film. It also serves as a pretty good stand-in to the horrors and lingering effects of sexual assault.
This one is a lot less gorey than The Cabin, with only one shot of such things in the first five minutes of the movie (although there is a shot of graphic nudity later on). My favorite type of horror is the kind that's subtle and atmospheric as opposed to a full-out bloodbath, and this film delivers in that regard. There's a lot of cinematic shots to create this dream-like state of the film that can't be pinned down to a single era, like a timeless retelling of an old urban legend, and I really appreciated it. It helps that there's all this synthesized music that makes me think of Twin Peaks and other 80s works, haha.- Jay why do you never come and visit your old grandma anymore:
- Loooove this shot <3:
- The Cabin in the Woods (R)
