Happy Birthday Luma!

I just had one of the most dangerous experiences of my life. I wrapped up doing some programming at the Robotics Club and exited my high school.

I immediately noted an occasional heavy raindrop and the very dark clouds but I decided to go ahead and head home since I love overcast weather. Upon reaching the parking lot, I decided that I would swing by the nearby library in the event that I made the wrong call.

I never made it.

Upon crossing the road that runs in front of my school, probably 1000 feet from where I exited the school, the rain clouds rapidly started dumping torrential amounts of rain. I quickly decided that I could back to the school faster than I could get to the library.

Unfortunately because I just crossed, I would have had to wait to several minutes for the lights to cycle around to permit me to cross safely. I chose to shield myself with a Virginia law that prevents people attempting to reach a school from being charged with jaywalking and take my chances in traffic.

I took a few steps and then to the northeast, several miles behind my school, I saw a large lighting bolt come down. A couple more steps revealed that I would be crossing back across the road on a blind corner. I managed to slip between some cars and was halfway across the parking lot when I heard another bolt of thunder.

Adding to the danger, the rain was collecting on my glasses and obscuring my left field of view. And my school's parking lot is almost never pedestrian friendly.

I did eventually make it back inside unharmed, but quite wet.

Walking on foot several miles a week probably contributes to that.
