It appears to have something similar to the Active Time Battle system.

May or may not be an update later today, depends on how tired I am. I'm exhausted right now but hopefully a family lunch planned for later will shake me up.

Let's Play OFF: Part 4, OFF With Their Heads
- Spoiler:
This is the room off to the right of where we fought those random ghouls. Let's wander around. There's a treasure chest in a small dead-end corridor to the left.
A Joker has been found.
Oh, I'm not sure if I've gone over the item descriptions or not, but I'm gonna do that. So here they are.
Luck ticket: Recovers a moderate amount of HP
Silver flesh: Recovers a moderate amount of CP
Joker: Revives a person
Now let's talk to a guy down here—WHAT IN THE SWEET PULSATING MOTHER OF FUCK ARE THOSE FUCKING THINGS
Magnolia
A severed head, floating in the air.
HP: 30 / CP: 10
Light weakness against meat
im never gonna fucking go to sleep tonight dear sweet jesus lord of fuck
Anyway, their main attack seems to be "Chronic Migraine," which has no discernable effect that I can figure o—why does it say my Alpha is blinded.
No.
What does that mean.
Adversaries purified.
200 experience points gained.
40 credits received.
Okay, now let's talk to this guy down here.
I'm... I'm working... I'm being productive...
Allow me to inform you right here that the noise these guys make each time a new line of speech rolls up is the sound of someone struggling to breathe.
This guy is down here, in the smoke mines, which provide their breathing source, on low breath, the only one working due to spectre hazards, just trying to breathe.
You go little dude.
You go.
ANYWAY, more exploration.
I'm going to take the ladder first. Then the top way, then the right. Down the ladder, we walk down a long corridor and reach a door.
There's a door.
But it seems to be locked from the inside.
Welp, nothing more to see here, so let's go.
...Wait a second.
This lamp is the only one not turned on.
There's a strange switch under this lamp...
> Activate
> Don't touch it
A door opened.
...WELL. Didn't notice that before. Let's see.
Top guy, ri—LEFT guy, bottom guy.
We're safe here... But we'll have to escape once we run out of meat.
Next.
Why did you open the door?
The spectres are going to attack us!! Go away! Go away quickly!
...Now I feel mean.
NEXT.
The regulations prohibit outside visitors to enter the main galleries! Go away!
...Something tells me I'm not welcome in this room. Sheesh.
Let's look in that treasure chest I missed.
Three pieces of Belial's meat have been found.
...I think I just stole their only food.
...Batter, you're a DICK.
Belial's meat: Cures all negative status alterations
I'll try it on blinded Alpha.
...Except Alpha is magically cured. Huh.
Weird. BACK TO WORK.
I had another battle with those flying heads that I auto'd through, results are:
Adversaries purified.
300 experience points gained.
60 credits received.
Luck ticket received.
Up the path that we saw near the ladder before, I found a chest.
Two pieces of Belial's meat have been found.
Anyone noticing an abundance of meat in this place? It's a bit worrying.
...What the FUCK is this thing.
January
Ghoul with a dusty breath.
HP: 90 / CP: 15
Light weakness against metal
So then I proceeded to batter the first month of the year to (second) death.
Adversaries purified.
170 experience points gained.
50 credits received.
Alpha Level 2 achieved.
Saturated Chain has been acquired.
Let's check out this new Saturated Chain competence that our Alpha got!
Saturated Chain: Special attack of low impact.
Nice. Let's heal a bit then go down that final path.
Had a couple of battles on the way there, results:
Adversaries purified.
200 experience points gained.
40 credits received.
Luck ticket received.
Adversaries purified.
300 experience points gained.
60 credits received.
Luck ticket received.
This is the room to the right of the other ladder. Let's go up this ladder. It'll probably lead us to wherever we can remove those obstacles.
Wh... What?
Did you come from the smoke mines?
Yes.
But... But... But there are loads of spectres down there...
Yes.
Are you a spectre?
No.
Then who are you? Have you been sent by the Queen? Or by Dedan?
No.
But... But... But... You still know how to fight the spectres?
You... You could destroy them?
Yes.
Oh. That... That would be great...
We... We have... uh... spectres in our big barns.
Barns?
Ah... uh... yes...
Um... You're at the metal farmsteads of Pentel, the eastern part of zone 1.
Our work consists of cutting livestock in two and extracting the metallic boulders that were contained in the cadavers.
(Yep. You heard right. They harvest metal from cows.)
All the poor quality metal is discarded, forming the ground we walk on. The rest gets purified to make tools and other objects with.
Some of it is also put into crates and sent to the other zones, so they have tools and soil as well, I suppose...
As the first of four elements... It's an important element.
(FYI, I think they call every element the "first of four.")
Because without metal, people would have nothing to walk on. They would sink and drown.
There... And thus we have spectres in the large barns...
I must purify the mines first.
Ah... Yes, but the barns aren't that big... And uh...
It would be nice of you to take care of them fast, because the Queen's inspector is going to arrive at any moment...
So... Could you please take care of the barns first?
...
Alright.
Ah! Ah! Great! Thanks, thanks a lot!
The barns are directly to the right.
They aren't big at all; you'll see, it's going to be done quickly.
Well, let's go to that path on the right first. Barns come later.
There's a big house here.
I prefer working here over the smoke mines. At least you profit by the outside air.
Guy near the goats:
We shouldn't get attached to the animals... Once you are it's difficult to put your hands inside.
Anyway, now the barns.
Left guy:
These balls are clusters of worked metal, which are going to be sent to other zones.
It's uh... metallic.
Brilliant observation. You must be a rocket scientist. Or a judge.
Right guy:
We have to pay close attention to the nutrition of the animals if we want high-quality metal.
...does this mean
if they want low-quality metal for the ground
they have to
...nevermind
Guy near door:
You're going to destroy the spectres? Hurry up, we're expecting the Queen's inspector at any moment...
So let's get going. Into the barn!
There are/is 5 spectre(s) left in the barn.
Kill 'em all. Here we go.
Fat Spectre
Ominous ectoplasmic incarnation.
HP: 90 / CP: 15
Light resistance against smoke
Now, you can't see it here, but those speech bubbles are actual enemies. Like, after you defeat the big ghost dude, you have to defeat the bubbles too. And they fucking multiply the longer you wait.
Anyway, we're gonna do a lot of battles here and I'm getting quite tired, so I'm going to skip the end-of-battle results stuff unless we level up. Like right now.
Batter Level 3 achieved.
Save First Base has been acquired.
Save First Base: Restores some HP
Useful competence, I guess. Let's move on.
After defeating the final spectre on the floor below (complete with tiny Strength-except-without-need-for-an-HM-and-not-in-Pokémon-type puzzle) and leaving the barn, a cutscene plays.
It's getting late though, and I can't find a sprite of the new dude who appears in the cutscene yet, so we'll cut off here. Sorry everybody. Might edit the cutscene into this post later. Signing OFF.

For the most part, yes. I'll try to get that cutscene in later today. I might need to get the sprite from the game myself.

I like the puns.
Also, in case you're wondering what Blinded does, it probably lowers attack accuracy, based on its function in some other RPGs.

I've got a good sprite for the character in the cutscene and will be posting it later today. Might even get another whole part out, who knows.

Let's Play OFF: Part 4.5, The Queen's OFFicial
Here's the cutscene. I had to go through it twice because my computer kinda whacked out in the middle of typing it. You know sometimes when anything activated by your mouse suddenly stops working, while your keyboard is perfectly fine? Yeah, that happened. e_e
- Spoiler:
I... I... I... I am... really...
Shut your trap, you poor moron.
No... I... Yes...
Has he been in there for long?
I... I don't know...
Of course. You know nothing.
I could've guessed.
He... He will eliminate... The spectres...
And why does he think he's capable of destroying those stupid phantoms?
He thinks he's better than you! Better than the Queen!
No... No, I don't think that...
Shut it. I haven't asked you anything.
You all think you're smarter than everyone else.
But you're all the same.
At any case that's hardly important.
The ghosts will erase that prig.
I... Ah? You... You think he won't succeed?
Of course not. Nobody here's capable of fighting the phantoms, other than the Queen's officers.
If you'd only listen to me more often, you wouldn't be in so much shit.
But... But then who... Who's going to destroy the phantoms?
I could've done it.
But you don't deserve it.
Too bad for you, you'll just have to take care of your problems yourselves.
I... I... No... P-... Please...
I'll be leaving now.
I'll be returning to Alma. At least the people there are polite. They ain't constantly cutting you off.
Pl-... Please... Don't...
Goodbye.
*cue him walking into the man*
Piss off.
Don't... No... I...
I command you.
Get the fuck out of my way this instant, if you want to keep your job.
*man steps aside and dude walks off screen*
Who was that person?
You... You're alive?
Yes.
And... And the spectres?
Eradicated. The barn is pure now.
That... You...
You must be very lucky.
(I think that may just be the first line said by any of these citizens that didn't end in an ellipsis.)
Who was that person?
That... That was Dedan.
He's the Queen's supervisor.
You mean specter.
...
... No...
The Queen doesn't employ spectres. He can't be one.
But he's hostile.
I must destroy him.
No... No... Don't do that.
(I tell him flat-out that I'm going to murder the Queen's chief supervisor and all he can think to say is "Don't do that.")
He's an envoy of the Queen.
I... I... Uh... You had better go complete your work in the smoke mines...
... P-Please...
...
Besides, he is in Alma. No one can get there without proper authorisation.
So... Please... Return to the smoke mines...
Alright.
Yes, as you may be able to tell from his behaviour (and his fucking sprite sheesh nice teeth dude), Dedan is a rotten piece of work. You're pretty much set up to hate him from the get-go here. Plus the noise he makes is fucking terrifying. It sounds like Satan's motorcycle getting jammed with human bones and hard bread.
Anyway, this concludes our short little session, I'll try to do a full update tomorrow.

Let's Play OFF: Part 5, I'll Take Those Credits OFF Your Hands
Picking up right where we left... OFF.
im so sorry for my horrible punning skills but i wont ever stop
- Spoiler:
Re... Return to the mines, please.
Okay.
But hang on.
That path up there is now open. I'll check it out.
*noises of meat being squicked with*
(Talking to the guy nearest, then farthest from me.)
Extracting the metal boulders from the cows isn't what I prefer.
But if I do my job well, maybe I'll get transferred to Alma...
Next.
As soon as we extract everything from the corpse, we'll slice it up into pieces and eat the meat.
Pleasant. Anyway, if you inspect the unmanned cow carcass, you get this message:
It's half of a cow.
Expert investigation skills, Batter. You might as well be Sherlock Holmes.
ANYWAY, let's move up that little path thing to the left.
I'm not going to take the train yet if it brings me anywhere new. I want to purify the mines first.
Talking to the guy ahead:
It is said that the names of the metro's stops correspond to the names of important people of the past...
I have trouble imagining it hasn't always been like this...
Watch that be important. Just watch.
Anyway, the train doesn't take me anywhere new. So let's go back to the mines. That pathway we saw a few updates ago is probably gone now.
And whaddaya know, I was right. ONWARD!
The cave's gotten dark. Oh great. Looks like we're going to travel inside this spiky ball of lightness. There's a path upwards.
Let's see what's in here, then I think there was a path to the right.
A piece of Silver flesh has been found.
NOPE, there wasn't a path to the right. But there were Magnolias.
A new message appears after the standard "Purification in progress..."
Adversaries are surprised.
I suppose this means we get a quick first attack. Anyway, I win the battle quickly, with results following:
Adversaries purified.
300 experience points gained.
60 credits received.
Luck ticket received.
Anyway, down the path we came from and to the right. There seems to be another path leading upwards, and one to the right branching off of that. I'll go up, then right.
...Nevermind, there's THREE NEW PATHS THIS WAY. This place is a fuckin' maze.
Well, you know, as if they didn't tell us that before.
Couple more Magnolias:
Adversaries purified.
200 experience points gained.
40 credits received.
Luck ticket received.
Luck ticket received.
Not really luck anymore if we get them all the time. Anyway, pressing on. I went back down the path and to the right, leading to a dead end with a chest.
Two Luck tickets have been found.
Nice. Next I went back up the other path to another chest in a much shorter dead end area.
A piece of Abaddon's meat has been found.
To the right is a blocked passageway, so left it is.
Adversaries purified.
300 experience points gained.
60 credits received.
Luck ticket received.
Alpha Level 3 achieved.
Aaaand, to the left is two more passageways, one up, one down. I'll go down first, since it's most likely to lead to a dead-end.
...Except now I seem to be in a room with a switch.
The switch is currently on ON
> Flip the switch
> Do nothing
The switch is now on OFF
... I SINCERELY HOPE THAT WAS NOT THE BIG TITLE DROP RIGHT THERE
OH MY GOD
IF IT IS
I FUCKING SWEAR
I WILL DO
A THING
...Anyway, yeah, that didn't seem to have any effect WHATSOEVER. Which probably means it was incredibly important. To be sure, I'll check that barricade we saw earlier.
Adversaries purified.
300 experience points gained.
60 credits received.
YEP, they're gone. And the cave is now light over here. I'm going to check that one last passageway though.
Fighting a January:
Adversaries purified.
170 experience points gained.
50 credits received.
AAAAAAND THAT PATH WAS A TRAP AND I'M JUMPED BY A SPECTRE. GREAT.
I forgot to mention, those spectres' main attack seems to be Classical Talking. You know, the same sort of spectres we found in the barn. Their name escapes me at the moment.
Adversaries purified.
320 experience points gained.
90 credits received.
Silver flesh received.
So now back to that other pa—hello January.
Adversaries taken by surprise.
Odd thing I'm noticing just now, the Flee option seems to only be available when adversaries are taken by surprise. Hm.
Adversaries purified.
170 experience points gained.
50 credits received.
OH MY GOD
OH MY GOD
I FUCKING KNOW THIS GUY
I'VE FUCKING BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOREVER OH MY FUCKING GOD /YES/
FUCK YES GUYS LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TOOOOOOOOOO
ZACHARIEEEEEEE
The characters are starting to pile up, aren't they?
Pardon?
What I'm saying is that the average player doesn't need all these complicated and tedious dialogues.
There should be more action and fewer questions.
Who are you?
I'm Zacharie, the traditional items merchant that's necessary in every video game.
I'll always find myself in places you're going to visit before you arrive.
But enough blether. I'm not one of those protagonists you need to listen to for hours.
So lemme see the color of your credits.
Need anything in particular?
> Buy
> Sell
> Leave
Here's what I have at the moment.
I'll just run off the descriptions of each new item here. If anything seems good I'll buy it.
Moloch's meat: Cures poison
Eye: Analyses the enemies' characteristics
Aura of Justice: Defensive equipment (1)
Nicolas Tunic: Defensive equipment (2) for the Batter
Radius Epidermis: Defensive equipment (2) for Add-Ons
I can't spot anything particularly useful here; we seem to be doing just fine on health during battles so we don't need defensive equipment, especially with healing blocks being so abundant around these early parts. We already have a competence that does exactly what Eye does. And fuck poison.
Anyway, I think we'll heal up and save here. That door looks pretty big and important. We'll go through it next time.
Signing OFF.

Re: Let's Play OFF: Completed!
Due to switching to a new computer I'll have to redownload OFF and get back to where we are now. Good thing is I'll now be able to install the font file it wanted me to at the beginning of the game. However, I'll have to find a different screencapping system, because the one I was using before was able to save a screenshot of only one window directly to the desktop, which I can't do with this computer.
