Re: Otaku Corner
So, found out yesterday that the Wii now has a Crunchy roll channel. So I'm thinking I can watch anime for free and try to get caught up while I save up for a new laptop.
....turns out that you need a premium account to watch anything on the Wii channel version...

Man, Jo has been living a sitcom these past few days. Of course, sitcoms are funny to everybody except for the protagonist.

I think I heard something today that Nintendo is going to release the NES with 30 games pre-loaded.

You need a premium account to watch anything on any console. I can confirm with my Vita experiences.jokool wrote:So, found out yesterday that the Wii now has a Crunchy roll channel. So I'm thinking I can watch anime for free and try to get caught up while I save up for a new laptop.

It's something new for IS, so I'm not complaining.
....reminds me that I still haven't seen the last special for IS (world purge hen)...
Really need to catch up on so much anime and manga...

Speaking of: finally catching up on Spice and Wolf since Funimation has it on YouTube.
....and watching it has made me realize that I should just avoid women all together...
Holo is easily one of my favorite anime girls of all time, but she is also the kind of girl that I see as nothing but trouble (drinks a lot, manipulative, will most likely clean out your wallet in one day, etc.)... Problem is, I still find her cute, and it reminds me of how I tend to fall for girls like that IRL...

Re: Otaku Corner
I've decided to delve into the world of OEL (Original English Language) manga and I will start out by reading some of Svetlana Chmakova's work (she is Russian but lives in Canada).
I chose Dramacon, her first work to read. I personally disliked it, but it has gotten pretty good reviews on Goodreads and other websites, so I don't know what gives for me.
I will say I liked the setting. I like it when manga commentates on itself or its "culture", so I found that interesting. I thought it definitely portrayed "anime/manga con culture" pretty well, but other than that, the series (three volumes long) was a miss for me. It's very possible the characters were dramatized and overplayed for effect, since it is after all a self-aware manga.
I did not like Matt. He was incredibly cringe-worthy. I know the creator intended for him to be a jerk, but really, he comes off as far more awkward than it seems he was intended to be.
The art was okay. Tones were great. Paneling was fine. I don't have much to comment on it.
I feel odd because I hate feeling like I am bashing a manga, because I can only imagine how hard it is to make one, and it gets messy when there are blurry lines between what I think is objectively "bad" and what I think is subjectively "bad". Like, I personally feel like much of my dislike for it stems for me disagreeing with a lot of the author's choices in the plot, but I know that a lot of people enjoyed this manga, and I respect that. Anyway, I don't even feel like this is so much of a review as it is a silly rant. I frankly have a lot more to say, but I'd rather this not drag on with a bunch of frivolous comments that are more derived from my taste and not what I think is genuinely positive or negative about this manga (oh yeah, I get repetitive, too).
Next manga: Night School.

- Spoiler:
- Worse still, it is hard to see why Kriss and him would be together. I suppose it makes sense, but it is quite doubtful that that relationship would last.
- Spoiler:
- it embarrassed me by how much Chmakova relies on making Matt's girlfriend/ex-girlfriend annoying, scheming, etc. That trope is so overused and unoriginal. It's so obvious how chalked up his ex is supposed to be viewed as that when it turns out she isn't all that bad, it doesn't feel surprising and like you've been painfully waiting for this moment the whole time and that it was delivered far too late on Chmakova's part.
- Spoiler:
- I mean, for Chr!st's sake, she includes an "almost rape scene" so that Kriss has an excuse to dislike her current boyfriend without it being too extreme as if she really was raped, and of course, Matt rescues Kriss. Also, Bethany's mom gets in a severe car crash after arguing with her daughter about whether she can be an artist or not as a career, and her mom miraculously lives. All the while Bethany's aunt serves truth tea like a b!tch to Bethany's mom the whole time before this.

Re: Otaku Corner
If you think a manga is bad, then you think a manga is bad. There's no silliness involved, you just think it's bad, even if it's highly praised.

The reason I was saying that is because sometimes I get annoyed when other people act like them disliking a "well-liked" manga means someone everyone else that likes it has poor taste or isn't "refined" or something like that.

How far in are you?jokool wrote:Holo is easily one of my favorite anime girls of all time, but she is also the kind of girl that I see as nothing but trouble (drinks a lot, manipulative, will most likely clean out your wallet in one day, etc.)... Also Holo is pretty far from trouble, she does know better than most people, as you will see as you progress in the series.
