I'm steadily losing faith in my own country. America used to be a country in which shit got done, but now it's falling apart left and right because of poor maintenance (if any) and can't even keep up to what the world rest of the world already has.

It took China just 6 years to build over 5,000 miles of high speed railways, but we can't even start a project to build our own dedicated lines. And the only high speed rail service we do have can't even reach its full speed over most of its line because of track condition and traffic.

As if the lack of good public transportation wasn't bad enough, the rest of our infrastructure is in horrible condition. We're spending huge amounts of money just to maintain crappy structures that could collapse at any time. Our own government rates America's infrastructure at a D and does nothing to improve it.

There really isn't anything that could cheer me up so much as learning that there are currently efforts underway to return a steam locomotive to running order, especially one that would be running fairly close to my area. Norfolk & Western #611 has been on static display in Virginia Museum of Transportation, located in Roanoke, VA, since 1995 after Norfolk and Southern canceled their steam program. While the exact work (and more importantly how much it would cost) she would need to be restored to running operation is still being determined, she will definitely need all of her flues replaced and a few upgrades to conform to the latest FRA standards for steam locomotives.

I've also had a similar issue, this one dealing with regrets surfacing while laying in bed. It's really depressing to have regrets flood your mind while trying to fall asleep.
