trust me I still own melee, I clocked a LOT in that thing.
but it isn't a fighting game because it isn't street fighter-esque or tekken-esque.

By that logic, Final Fantasy XIII isn't a RPG, because it doesn't play like other Final Fantasy games.

In seriousness, though...the only thing Smash really lacks compared to fighting games is the health bar.

to prove my point.
smash has a percentage that gradually grows higher and higher and higher until you die, and has sock and time based matches.
street fighter is health based and mixes both stock and time into one mode instead of making them separate, has no items, and has a health bar.
the only thing smash has that other fighting games have is stage hazards, which where introduced in mortal kombat II.(and finishing moves, also introduced by mortal kombat)

and gameplay.
and some mechanics.
only the finishing move and stage hazards are not original to smash.

All competitive Smash games mix the stock and time modes together.

By the way you're describing it, percentage is basically just health in reverse.

and for most people outside competitive, they choose stock OR time.
this is just my opinion in the end though, and you can have yours.
