Re: Suggest a Series!
I love Shiki! Unlike subbed Kampfer and Sakura Trick, I was riveted to my 3DS since picking up where I left off when I ran out of dubbed episodes back in August. Even then, I remember I was quite interested in the anime.
This isn't a romance anime, this isn't an ecchi anime, this is not a fanservicy anime (in fact the only fanservice is a few outfit choices and the second ending theme). This is an anime that does not truly have a happy ending, nor do most of the characters live long enough to make it to the ending.
Yes, anyone can die. And once the story really takes off, it gets messy, real messy. With just as much blood as Hellsing, if not more, though without as much dismemberment. Some characters get an implied death, a select few get an honorable death, others don't and are brutally killed on screen. Some even get tortured in the process. Some others are killed offscreen, and the decomposing corpse is shown later.
This is perhaps a worst case scenario for an Apocalypse without the fancy unrealistic end of the world stuff. Well apart from the vampires.
So not a story for children, but for those who can handle it, it's a unique story compared to everything else I've seen before it. For those interested in seeing the AMV that got me hooked on the series, search YouTube for "Shiki - Anime MV" uploaded by BestMiscOfAllTime. It's about 2.8 minutes long and gives a good idea of what you're in for without giving many spoilers.
Why don't I link to it directly? Well the anime is rated R-17 (according to MyAnimeList) for the violence and profanity (which I dispute since I didn't see or hear any, wait, actually there might have been some swearing with the s word) and this AMV has the same violence in it. So I'm more or less covering my butt. Of note though, Hulu does not have a mature audience notice for this anime. I think the whole series is on YouTube via Funimation's channel, though I don't know if their content filter kicks in or not.

Re: Suggest a Series!
Went looking for it on the Youtube channel, but didn't find it. I did find a creepy good soundtrack though:
Probably won't work since it's impossible to tell I from l in the url (same sort of goes for O and 0)...

Looking for the AMV? Or the series itself?

Actually jokool, doesn't your family hate violent things? If so Shiki, isn't something you should be watching without at least some precautions. I feel I can't stress enough that this anime is violent, especially after the halfway point.

*is watching anime over my dad's shoulder again and is intrigued by what I'm seeing thus far*
I know it has Succubi by the subs and a bit of inferring from other dialogue, but I don't yet know what the name of the series is.

Re: Suggest a Series!
Found it. Amazing what a little searching will do, though also helps that I remembered the first name of the succubus and so was able to pick her out of a list of characters. Pity it only just started airing. Hopefully I don't forget it sitting on my plan to watch list.

Re: Suggest a Series!
suggest a not too violent series my mom would "approve" of
the only ones I can think off are the mainstreams, and I want to get into less mainstream anime from now on.

*examines my list for possibilities*
How about Acchi Kocchi for starters? If I remember correctly, there's no violence or swearing at all. However if a romantic comedy isn't what you had in mind....
Then how about GJ-bu, a slice of life comedy?
What something a little more out there and still nonviolent? Try Shinryaku! Ika Musume, which features an adorable squid trying to take over the world.
I have more Ecchi and violent stuff on my list than I realized
