Well, in FF13 you only control once character. So the player character dies, game over. No different from any other, really.

Fire Emblem is a better example of that having no reason to be there. Especially since none of them "die". Especially on casual mode in Awakening where unit loss isn't even permanent.

It's still silly since you can switch who the player controlled character is outside of battle, so clearly the Player Controlled Character isn't that important. But if they fall in battle, they can't go on!

Correction: no one who is important to the plot and/or is a woman dies in Awakening. Only important to the plot in previous games.

The main reason why the game's over in pre-Awakening games is because of the "Seize" victory mechanic - the "Seize" command is Lord-exclusive, so if your Lord dies, you're shit outta luck. (Since we're going by game mechanic-induced ways that leader death = game over.)

Also the Lord is at least the leader of the country that you're controlling. Him dying or falling in battle would be a pretty huge kick for morale.
