If a monster replaces a monster to be destroyed by Smashing Ground (with, say, Mask Change), does Smashing Ground resolve with no effect?

So, I felt like trying out a Laval Quasar vs. Exodia duel (me playing Quasar, AI playing Exodia). Thought it'd be exciting to see which would win first:

This is a pretty useful card. The first thing that comes to mind when using it is Madolches, but really a lot of decks can benefit from it, because it allows you to recycle cards.
