Matchlock? That makes it sound like the rifle she's holding is a flint lock (creates a bunch of sparks to ignite a bunch of powder in a pan that goes inside the gun and fires the main charge) not a bolt action (modern system).

Well, yeah. When most of the in-game weapons are swords, spears, axes, etc, you should expect any guns to be fairly primitive.

Bolt-action rifles aren't primitive, they are still the preferred firearm of most snipers.
