Re: This. Is. MINECRAFT! [v1]
- First survival map:
I'd say I started off in a good spot! Got plenty of trees, a few pigs around, aaaand:
Not just one mine nearby:
But two! I got really lucky here!
Decided to do a tree house base in this tree.
Got attacked by a Skeleton my first night while building....
Me cowering in fear behind a poorly built wall....
I eventually mustered up enough courage to go on the offensive and tried to kill one of the skeletons:
....Didn't go so well. He shot me down one of the mines.....
Eventually got the foundation of my tree house down.
And here's what it currently looks like.
Inside's a bit cramped, but I'll work on that more later.

I would cap those mines for the moment. Especially that near vertical one.

Re: This. Is. MINECRAFT! [v1]
Probably a good idea....
I forgot to mention that I built a sort-of stairway down the near vertical one and found a lot of iron in it, so now I have an iron pickaxe and sword. And there was more iron deeper in, but I forgot torches, so I'll have to get it later when I get back on.
Also, another thing I noticed that my frame rate was fairly consistent and rarely lagged, though, I can still only get 10 FPS max without it completely freezing up on me...

Under the options menu brought up by hitting Esc, click on Video Settings.
Try reducing render distance to 5 chunks or less.
Check that Graphics is set to fast.
Capping your framerate may also help. Since you're only getting 10 at the moment, cap it to 20.
Turning Smooth Lighting off will very noticeably affect how the game looks wherever lighting is involved, but can also help increase framerate.
Turning Clouds Off may also help.
Changing your particle setting may also help. Examples of particles include smoke and embers from furnaces and torches. Changing this setting will affect how frequently those particles appear.
Changing the Anisotropic Filtering Setting should also help.
No idea what Mini Map Levels mean.
As you may recall from my Train Simulator Let's Plays, the price of increasing framerate on slow computers is reduced graphical quality. Not that Minecraft has realistic graphics to begin with...

Managed to adjust it to where I can get up to around 30 FPS, which is awesome!

- other stuff that happened today:
Capped off the mines, here's the north one.
And here's the south entrance (which I now realize that I made a typo on ).
You may notice that I call it "jokool tunnel" and here's why:
A friendly little Creeper showed me that they connect. So now I have a tunnel that goes under the area my base is.
Unfortunately, there's not much else in there. Did get a lot of coal and iron though. Managed to make some armor (helmet and boots).
Found a cross randomly in the ground. I think Ray found a cross like this the other day in one of the recent Let's Play Minecraft episodes.
One last thing of importance from today:
I found a doggie!
I know they don't usually run away, but I decided to make a little pin for him:

I plan on doing that, but while I'm back at the house, I'll keep him there.

- Today's adventure:
Weird glitch with my dog. Kept going up and down the ladder non stop. Eventually did stop when I walked away.
There's an Enderman hanging around my house. Saw him twice while walking around (or it could have been two different Enderman *shrug* ).
Made a fishing rod after killing a spider.
My catches, including a rare clown fish!
Also found more caves to explore, one of them:
...has a very big drop....
Other things that happened were being attacked by a zombie while lagging out or getting stuck on something. Ended up dying for the second time....
Fortunately, it was close to my house, so I was able to get everything back. Wasn't easy though since there were two Creepers nearby.... Both nearly killed me again...

Re: This. Is. MINECRAFT! [v1]
@Truthseeker4449: I usually keep a limited number of supplies on me and put the rest in my chest so I don't lose anything too valuable if I do die in a bad spot. For some odd reason though, I lost a couple of things when I first loaded up this morning (a couple of stone tools and a few bones I had from killing skeletons), so not sure what happened there...
@Lief: I have! I really want to do a video series someday, but I have thought about doing a small LP with a few screenshots for now. I'd like to finish up 999 first though (and that may take a while if I keep playing Minecraft ).
Also, while I'm here, would any of you be interested in trying out something multiplayer with me? I want to see if that's possible on this laptop.

We've got to setup a server then. I've already got one, however it's setup is incomplete because I don't have enough knowledge about my router to port forward, which is the most crucial part as that's how other computers find my game server.
The other option is to hop onto a preexisting server. The only one I connect to is my local library's, but that has a whitelist and thus requires an application to be filed. Assuming you don't want to lie, you won't be able to join that one as it's for Loudoun County residents only.

I'm interested. :D
We have a private minecraft server? :O learn something new every day!
@jokool: that ain't no cave you got there, that's a ravine! They're fairly common and are, in my mind, the best way to get better resources, since they extend so deep.
Also, jokool, if you're having a lag issue, try downloading the Optifine mod. It's a well-used, well-appreciated mod that has the ability to double your FPS.
