Re: A Galaxy Far, Far away...
Then perhaps a basic plot rundown? In spoilers of course.

Wookiepedia has the whole plot on the movie's wiki page. They even have screenshots up now. BE WARNED THAT SPOILERS ARE EVERYWHERE IF YOU CLICK THAT LINK!

Wow, Jar Jar Binks was a Sith Lord the whole time! I knew it!
Nah, I saw the movie this weekend and forgot to mention it.

Yeah, just about everyone I know has seen it, including my mom...
She did say that she'd get the DVD for me when it came out.

Re: A Galaxy Far, Far away...
- My thoughts on TFA:
- I feel like I can't properly rate it since there's still two more parts of this tale to tell
(three if we get episode 9 pt I and II)
I mean I did enjoy it, because Star Wars
But it felt like it was trying too hard to hook people via nostalgia . It's been awhile since I watched the prequel trilogy in its entirety, but I don't remember The Phantom Menace adhering so closely to the format of A New Hope.
Initially I felt that the new characters suffered because of this, though I've since reconsidered. Still, it'd be nice to see what lead up to Finn going rogue after over two decades First Order indoctrination. Also, I can't believe they let one low-ranking Stormtrooper take a highly valued prisoner out of his holding cell alone into the docking bay (even if Finn was at the top of his class, as I learned via this post; would be nice to see this in the actual film because prior to that this was slightly less believable) without the work of outside forces. Even with Kylo Ren's erratic behavior you've got other people in command who are more together that would catch these things. The only thing more unbelievable is that the First Order learned nothing from the previous Death Stars.
I'll retract this if there's flashbacks showing some anomalies in his training or if he mentions them himself (if his learning of his origins wasn't common practice for Stormtroopers, for example).
Poe (who I spent a portion of the movie thinking was named "Paul") seems pretty cool so far. Ace pilot and... yeah, ace pilot. I'm sure will be seeing more of him in the future, but if he, Finn, and Rey are meant to be the new trio of this trilogy he got the worst of it out of the three. Though to be fair he got maybe a little bit less focus than Han did in A New Hope. Really hoping we get to see more scenes between him and Leia.
Kylo Ben Ren Solo, hoo boythoughtsnotunveiled wrote:Guys. GUYS. Can we talk about how Poe’s idol CANONICALLY is Leia?
[...]
(Also at a meta level I just find it really awesome that Poe Dameron as a character could’ve easily been conceptualised as idolising Wedge Antilles or Luke Skywalker, but nope, it’s Leia Organa.)
I think there's a post out there saying he doesn't resemble either side of his family at all
but then when he starts acting like a pissbaby it's like "There's the Anakin Skywalker in him!!" lol he's definitely got the wangsting down
I guess they wanted to give a nod to the now discontinued canon by having him be named Ben,
even though it doesn't make as much sense for Han and Leia to name their kid after Obi Wan as it does for Luke. (Or was Leia well acquainted with him prior to the events of A New Hope? I'll take this back if she was, though to my understanding she just knew of him, she didn't know him personally.) I feel like the reveal of him being their son could've had a bigger impact if it was kept a secret until the next film. Or even until the Obi Wan vs the Sith Lord Scene 2.0 took place where Han confronts him on that extremely dangerous and hazardous walkway (seriously why was that walkway even there? Who in good conscious would think that set-up was a good idea?? Then again, the Empire probably doesn't have to deal with a lot of employee safety complaints.)
Just how did Snoke (who I'm betting is the Sith version of Yoda and is actually two feet tall in person, he just like overcompensating in his transmissions) get a hold on this kid? 'cause right now all we got is riding on granddad's coattails which by itself is pretty bleh until we can see the motivation behind it. Palpatine used family to get to Anakin and then he became so lost he ended up attacking Padmé. How was Ben convinced to turn away from the Light when, more likely than not, he knows the story behind Vader's end?
Rey fared the best out of all the newcomers imo. I loved that scene where she goes to pick up the lightsaber in Mos Eisley Cantina 2.0 (now with more green), and her tag battle with Finn against Kylo Ren. I'm a little bit confused about why everyone was in a frenzy trying to find her though. Unless his emotions were preventing him from doing this successfully, why didn't Ren just tap into the Force to locate her? She's not trained in it, so she wouldn't know how to hide herself from him. Also, how did Rey know to go to Leia and give her a hug after Han died if she never met Leia before hand?Force-connection with her auntie? And as much as I enjoyed the Han-Rey relationship, the whole "father figure" bit being explicitly mentioned seemed kind of forced. I mean she only knew him for... two days tops?(Tbh I'm really not sure about the time frame of this movie. Was it over the course of a week? Two weeks?)Assuming she's Luke's daughter (and I'll be more surprised if she isn't his daughter or Obi-Wan's granddaughter with all the foreshadowing we've gotten), it makes sense from Han's side of things, but from Rey's? Not so much. Same thing with the Leia and Rey scene.
Although again, still two more parts to this story, so I could very well be applauding the build-up two/four years down the road along with the foreshadowing that I missed. Atm though it feels incomplete, whereas Episode IV felt more solid as a stand alone film.
I hope Leia gets to do more actiony stuff like her (late ;;) S.O.
Granted, she's older and she's a general so she shouldn't have to be doing these things
But still I'd rather her not be reduced solely to scenes of planning military maneuvers or longing for Han (not that the latter will be much of a problem anymore T_T)
Like it can't be too hard for a scenario like that to crop up: There's an attack, she sends some of her guards away to help reinforce the main defense, a couple enemies manager to sneak up and attack her guard, she picks up a gun and let's them know she's not going down without a fight.
Better yet, have her use the Force more. If Rey can pick up how to use it in less than a week I can't believe Leia didn't try to hone her proficiency in it over the course of three decades. It would be such a disappoint for her to end up like Katara in LoK. ('s a bit of an extreme comparison since Leia is much more involved then Katara was there, but I just don't want her to be reduced to background antics while Han got to be in the thick of things and Luke most likely will be too.)
There's an article that says the last scene is hilarious without any bgm but I think it's hilarious with or without lol all that spinning
Shit Luke lost his aunt and uncle in the first movie of his trilogy and Rey's already lost her father figure/very-likely-uncle Han"Luke, don't you think it would be better for her to have a father in her life than abandoning her on a forsaken desert planet?"
"excuse u I grew up on a desert planet without my parents and I turned out to be the best Jedi ever I think I know what I'm doing"
Leia

Got TFA on DVD almost as soon as it hit the stores. Easily one of my favorite Star Wars movies!

Re: A Galaxy Far, Far away...
Last night there was a big showing of The Force Awakens outside on campus. I watched it with my roommate and it was a really good movie!
I was going to watch the rest of the series before moving onto TFA (I've already seen IV and V), but I figured I've learned enough about the series through pop-cultural osmosis to understand most of the continuity between the movies. Besides, it was a good opportunity for a fun social experience on campus, and it turns out campus is really pretty at night too. :B

I'm somewhat jealous, my campus normally becomes rather spooky with thick fog.
