Dreams and Realities
Post 2000!!!!!!!
- Spoiler:
- Chapter 1: Waking up
"Recharging complete......all students present to the main hall for roll!" The voice echoed in my head over and over, repeating its phrase until I opened my eyes.
"Ugh, why does it have to be so loud...."
I looked around with a sigh before rolling out of bed. I fell on the floor and instead of making any effort to move, simply lay there closing my eyes.
"All scribbles are to report to the main hall for roll at once!"
"Yeah yeah, in a minute...."
I instantly felt something lifting me up and looked at the mirror infront of me and sighed. You may be wondering what's going on, so let me clue you in. I'm not like you, I'm what we call a scribble. I'm basically a ball of dark blue lines going this way and that. There's also my two large yellow eyes, but that's about it. Don't know how they expect us to make it all the way to the hall on time when all we scribbles can do is roll or an awkward little hop.
"So, are you going to take me to the hall or just hold me here?"
I looked at the large glove which was holding me up in the air as a bucket of water floated up to me. I would have made some clever remark but before I could say anything the glove was dunking me in the bucket much like an emote would dunk a ball of happy in liquid sweet. Didn't get that did you? Thought so.
Once I was completely drenched in water the glove squeezed me like an orange until I was relatively dry then tossed me out the door, where I spent a few seconds bouncing about until I landed in a crowd of other scribbles like me. They all, of course, ignored me and continued onwards, getting into their positions for roll. I grumbled at the treatment I had recieved, and started hopping into my own position.
The positions we were given were based on our name, though 'name' might not be the right word for it. There was always a maximum of twenty-six scribbles for facilities and we were each given a letter for identification. I was L, as such I had to deal with K and M, who were most likely the dumbest scribbles ever concieved.
"Hey L, saw you get bounced in, stay up thinking about S again?"
Like I said, dumbest scribbles ever. I glared at the green eyed scribble before going back to complaining about my very existence. Then I saw her walk in and everything was better. Now normally I hate how these small groups make it so that I can't just hide in the crowd and get away with doing nothing, but the one advantage is that its a lot easier to just stare at S. Now S was different than all the other scribbles, yes she was made of lines like the rest of us, and only had her two light-blue eyes to help her stand out, but she was also so kind and sweet. Now don't take this the wrong way, it's not like I loved her or anything, we were just friends....unfortunately. Okay, I may have had a slight crush on her but I wasn't going to admit that to anybody, much less K and M.
"Heeeeeeeeeeello, L, you there?"
I turned towards the other scibble at my side. Red eyes, that meant it was M. Great, both K and M were here.
"Can you both just shut up and let me think?"
"Why? You apparently spent the night thinking."
"Yeah, so why don't you just talk to us and help us pass the time before teacher gets here?"
"Because I've had to put up with you guys ever since I was an egg!"
The two scribbles stared at me for a moment before they began to talk again. This was the moment where I usually would start yelling at them even louder, but a voice made them shut up.
"Hello scribbles. The time has come for the exam."
The exam, I had forgotten all about that! The exam was....well I think I'll let the voice explain it.
"As you are all fully aware, the exam is to see if young scribbles are strong enough to undergo the transformation into the next phase in their life cycle.." I already knew that, but keep listening. "..After having been deemed strong enough, the scribble will venture our of the facility and journy into the Forest of Beginings and seek out the core.." That's right, I finally get to leave this dull place, but here comes the best part. "..And upon finding the core, the scribble will change into an emote, and thus be transfered to Brainstorm Academy where they will learn to harness their power." Yes! Brainstorm Academy is supposed to be completely different from the facility in the aspect that there are multiple teachers due to the, get this, hundreds of students!
I looked around and noticed that all of the scribbles were staring at the portraits in the hall. They were probably all thinking about what it would be like to travel beyond the facility. All of the portraits were of areas beyond the facility. They were our only windows into the outside world. The facility had no windows, there was only one door and it was only opened on the day of the exam when scribbles would be taken out, and new eggs would come in to replace those who had become emotes.
"Do you think we'll be strong enough?"
K and M were both looking at me, worry clear on their face. For a second I just stood there, staring at them and thinking about their question.
"Of course you will, I'm sure we'll all get to leave this place."
I could tell just how relieved they felt when they heard me say that. I had never seen them act like that before, maybe because I was always so busy focusing on how I felt. It was strange, it actually felt...nice to console them.
Then I saw him, the first emote I had seen in my life. He was a green ball of fluff with large white eyes. On his back were his green butterflyesque wings and on his head two antennae which looked more like branches with leaves on the end. Floating at his side were the two gloves I was familiar with, and below him were two wooden clogs.
He floated around looking at each one of us and smiling, before suddenly turning around as the gloves flew around. He floated up to a large metal door down the hall and opened it up. We were all shocked by that, the door had never been opened before, and we had all tried on countless occasions to force it open. He floated into the room and then a wall of metal slid down, sealing him inside of the room.
"You must all be confused.." The voice in my head had come back, and by the look of the other scribbles, it was in their heads too, "I am the emote you just saw. That's right, that's what your caretaker looks like! Aren't I a handsome emote?" I could hear a few of the female scribbles giggle, and instantly turned to check if S was one of them, though I couldn't get a good look thanks to M.
"Anyway, the test will begin with various trials, do not be upset if you fail a trial as your score will be determined by how you did on average, so don't give up if you screw up!" A few sighs filled the room, though I was filled with anticipation...and nervousness? If the score was going to be based on our average, just how hard were these trials?
"Your first trial is.....TO GET IN HERE BEFORE THE ROOM IS SEALED!"
The metal wall rose up in an instant and then began to slowly descend. All of the scribbles charged forwards, with the slower ones being trampled. I was on of the trampled ones. By the time I managed to get back up, most of the scribbles were already inside of the room, and the door was halfway down. I'm sure if I had known any swears back then I would have let out a few. I began hopping forwards with all my might, not thinking about how I disliked traveling like this. I kept going, passing one or two scribbles which had been less physically active than me, and I neared the room. I could see inside of it, every scribble was staring at me and the last few as we kept going.
"Hurry up L!"
I noticed K and M cheering me on from inside the building and felt myself getting faster. You know, maybe those two weren't so bad after all. I couldn't finish that thought as I crashed into the metal wall. I had failed...
I just stood there, staring at my own reflection, eyes wide open. There were one or two other scribbles with me, I don't remember who, all I remember was that feeling of failure. I then began to run into the wall, I didn't know why, I just did. Over and over and over again, not stopping. After a few moments the wall rose back up and I fell into the room, and everyone was staring at me. The caretaker picked me up with his gloves and gave me a soft smile.
"Didn't I tell you not to feel bad? There are still other trials, and chances to redeem yourself, so don't fret. If you fill yourself with so much self-loathing, who knows how your core will change."
"M-my core?"
"Don't worry about it, you'll understand eventually."
With the same smile on his face, he put me down on the floor with the other scribbles. I just stood there staring at him, what did he mean about my core?
"Now then, for the next trial, I need every scribble here to stand perfectly still and not move!" The caretaker floated into a chair and sat there as all of us did our best not to move. At that point I realized it, these trials were going to be a real hassle to get through...

- Spoiler:
Chapter 2: The Terrible Trials
"I hate him....I really do...."
I was staring at the floor. Such details, I could take in every scratch in the tile. The only problem was that I didn't want to stare at the floor. The caretaker had gone around tipping each one of us over so that our faces were touching the ground. I did my best not to move, but it was amazingly uncomfortable to stay in that position, what with my eyes touching the tile and everything.
"Okay that's enough, its been three hours, you can move now, you all pass."
I let my body roll over on its side as I let out a sigh of relief. That was likely the most annoying thing I had endured in a long time, but I had passed the trial.I stared up at the sky, smile on my face. Wait, sky?! Weren't we indoors?
In an instant lightning shot down from above and hit all of us, with half the group screaming in pain. Out of the corner of my eye I could see the caretaker laughing at our pain, and when the lightning left, we floated before us all, "The half of you who screamed fail the trial of pain, and those who didn't passed."
I stared at him for a moment, trying my best to remember whether I had screamed or not. My mind did its best to figure it out but to no avail. Everyone's shouts had come at once, mixing them all together, and the lightning had numbed my body. I had no idea, then it hit me, maybe he couldn't differentiate the screams from each other and had based his analysis on our mouths....wait we didn't have mouths. I was getting desperate and I knew it.
My thoughts were interrupted by a large cylindrical object which crushed me. As it continued its course and rolled over the others, I realized what was going on. The caretaker had created it and was now crushing each and everyone of us. As I lay on the ground completely flattened, I struggled with all my might to stand back up. As I pushed myself off of the ground, I could feel my body returning to its regular spherical shape, just in time for the caretaker to pick me up and throw me at the wall.
I bounced off of it and went back towards him only to be swatted back at the wall by a tennis racket. As I whizzed back and forth, I could make out other blurs hitting the wall and bouncing back. He was using us as tennis balls! I let out an angry yell as I realized that and then stayed focused, no matter what, I had to pass the trials, if I didn't, then I'd never be able to finally leave this place.
......
I was tired, exhausted, barely able to stay upwards, but it was worth it. I took everything he had to throw at me and managed to survive through it. We were all standing outside of his room, waiting to be called in to receive news of how we did. One by one, the other scribbles went in and came back out in a few minutes. I watched carefully as S came back out, smile visible in her eyes, I knew she'd pass.
Before I knew it, it was my turn. I entered the room and quickly ducked to avoid a bean which had been tossed at me.
"My, you really do have good reflexes, such a shame too."
As I got back up, I noticed the caretaker was standing behind a desk, looking rather glum.
"W-what do you mean shame?"
"What I mean is, that you failed beyond all hope of passing, hope you do better next time!"
I stood there staring at him, unable to move. I had failed. I would be stuck here...and S would be moving on. I would lose my chance to be with her. I shut my eyes and exited the room, not wanting to look at anybody.
"So...did you pass?"
When I opened my eyes I could see K and M both looking at me, sadness clear in their expressions.
"Shut up..."
"I-it's alright, we failed too....we can be together at least!"
I looked up at them...no, I didn't look at them, I looked past them. I noticed something about the portrait behind them I hadn't before. It showed trees, large lush trees, but what caught my attention were the leaves. They were swaying back and forth ever so slightly. That could only mean one thing...that wasn't a portrait, it was a window! I looked around and noticed that all of the portraits were of similar trees, and all of them had leaves that were moving.
My first thought was to jump up to them, to open them and leave this place on my own, but that was impossible, the windows were too high, and you ever try opening a window without appendages? I continued to stare at the windows and then at the door not too far away.
"M, K, whether I passed or not, I'm going to leave this place...."

What is that place supposed to be? Hell for Emotes (because it certainly sounds like they're going through it)?

Re: Dreams and Realities
Since scribbles are to emotes as children are to adults, the place they're at is more like a nursery that raises scribbles until they are strong enough to under go the transformation from scribble to emote, of course the test to check if they are strong enough is rather....painful

That's one way of checking one's strength, though I'm a little mistfied how he failed.
