Welcome to my new LP, everyone! It's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars! This is your host, Caprizant, and I'll start us off with a bit of talk about the game itself.
The game is, as you might have figured out, an RPG. It was developed by Square Enix (then known as Square) and released for the SNES in 1996. It was the final Mario game on the SNES. Due to the release of the N64 and Super Mario 64 just a few months later, the success of the game was limited, but over time it has become a cult classic.
As for the LP, I'll be using the same system I used for Oracles, recording everything with Microsoft Expression first and then getting screenshots from there. Updates will likely be infrequent for awhile, until I graduate in May. After that, I'll have all the time in the world to finish it before I go to college in September.
This time around, all dialogue and game text will be done through screenshots, because the way the game does text is just so much easier to screenshot for some reason.
So without any further ado, let's start with update 1!
- update:
This is the title screen. It is a screen with a title.
This is the Mario cloning screen. Here you clone Marios for use in future heroic endeavors. You can even code one with the memory of a previous Mario, allowing you to continue your adventure without the inconvenience of a blank slate every time you lose a plumber. How convenient!
We'll name this one Daria, after its creator. Don't want to confuse it with some other schmoe's Mario, after all. :V
The game opens up with Peach—errrr, Toadstool, sitting in some pleasant scenery with nice music.
But what's this? Oh no! The sky's gone out!
Toadstool says, "WHERE ARE MY goshdern BUTTERFLIES"
Oh yeah, and Bowser exists too. He's a thing. Right there.
BOWSER IS TOTALLY A THING AND HE'S UP TO NOT NICE THINGS
Mario what the fuck man
How could you let Bowser steal the Princess right outside your own front door
PROTAGONIST DRIVE ACTIVATING
RUNNING: "GUILT.EXE"
Either Bowser consciously chose to live in the most deep dark evil place possible or he just turns everywhere he goes dark so people don't have to look at him take your pick
He lives in a giant castle what a fucking nerd
At least he's kind enough to open the door for us!
You see that turtle guy with the helmet? That's called a Terrapin. They're basically the guards here, really easy to avoid.
...Unless they have Special Enemy Designated Immunity. In which case they are unavoidable.
Alright, so here's the battle screen! As you can see, we have four commands, each corresponding to a button on the controller. Pressing each button activates the corresponding command, and you have to keep using that button to activate things within that command. So if you use the B button, and want to do something within the B menu, you must push the B button again. Pressing any other button exits the menu. It's weird, but you get used to it.
Y brings up the Special Attack menu. Press Y again to use the Jump attack, which takes some FP. As you can see, we currently have 10 FP. A Jump costs 3 FP. I don't quite want to waste those yet.
X brings up the Item menu. We don't have items yet, but if we did, we'd press X to use them.
A brings up the Attack menu. Select the opponent you want to attack and press A again to let 'er rip.
The "Unarmed" refers to us, not the Terrapin. If we get a weapon later on, the name will show there.
B brings up the Etc. menu, which allows you to Defend or Run (which we can't do right now because forced battle).
With all that out of the way... GET READY TO RUUUUMBLLEEEEEEEEEEE
*poosh*
If you hit A at the right time during your attack, you can go for extra damage, called a Timed Hit. Timing varies for each attack; for example, when punching, Mario should hit A just before the first punch connects to get a second punch. You'll know if you're successful because a little noise plays.
There are actually two types of Timed Hits. If your timing is good, you'll deal 150% damage; if your timing is perfect, you'll deal 200% damage. And if you do a Timed Hit with a regular Attack, it will never miss, which is cool.
Timed Hits work a little bit differently with Special Attacks, so I'll go over that in a bit.
Timed Hits can also be used when you're being attacked. If you press A right before an enemy's regular Attack hits you, you can either halve the damage (normal) or avoid it completely (perfect).
But as you can see, these guys don't do much damage anyway, so I'm not even gonna bother. :B
TAKE THAT YA TURD
UR A TURDLE
And Mario celebrates mercilessly destroying our enemies with a peace sign, go figure
This is where experience and money would be awarded if we were doing that right now, but we're not doing that right now because we're in the prologue and also those guys were pushovers. :U
Gotta wonder why Bowser would guard his home with the frailest enemies in his arsenal, but eh, complaining's for chumps.
AHHHHHHHHHHH FIRE AHHHHHHHH
AHHHH LIVING FIRE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ok we're safe
AHHHH THE BRIDGE IS OUT
Welp. Guess which way we're going!
Mario thinks he's missing something here.
Hmmm... maybe it's the throne. I mean, who makes their throne out of stone anyway? So uncomfy. And cold.
OH
Princeeeeeeess
HELLO BOWSER ARE YOU ANGRY AT ME FOR DEFYING THE LAWS OF PHYSICS TO JUMP ONTO A CHANDELIER WELL I'LL DEFY U 2
Oh god not a bruise
Also: starting a battle with Bowser turns everything dark. So I guess he really does darken everywhere he goes so people don't have to look at him.
NO PLEASE DON'T SEND ME BACK TO THE FACTORY I AM A GOOD CLONE
I'm not gonna waste my jumps right now, because I have reasons. For now I will just defy physics yet again by punching BOWSER in the FACE while FLOATING IN MID-AIR! Whaddaya think of that.
After a couple of turns of that...
This is what I reserved my Jump for!
The double Mario thing is an effect the game uses to show speed that is kinda hard to capture in a screenshot. So yeah. :U
If you time this correctly, you hear a 1-Up noise! Special Attacks get 125% effect on a good hit, 150% effect on a perfect hit, since they do more damage. The timing varies for each attack. For example, with the Jump, hit Y again just before you land on the foe. Some other cool things happen with different Special Attacks later on, like increasing range.
And there you go!
Bowser has this weird spike thing he can do where he shoots a spike from his back and I don't know how that works but there must be some weird turtle biology going on there. It doesn't deal much damage, anyway.
SHIT WRONG TARGET NOOOOO
Two can play at the defying physics game! He is clawing at me while floating. Float claw claw float.
And after another Jump on the chain...
Bowser why.
It's Klinklang, Bowser. Get your Pokémon right.
Alright that's it, LP over! It was really fun to play with you guys, my next LP will be coming in 25 years and only have 3 updates, etc., etc.
EVERYTHING IN THIS SCREENSHOT IS BEAUTIFUL
NOOOOOOOOOOO
Mario I don't call that fighting that is very much falling
Mario: "My life is Hell"
...HOW HIGH ARE WE HTAT HES' STILL FLALING WHATT HE
AND HOW DID WE CATCH UP WITH HIM HOW SI THAT
ARE THESE EVEN PHYSICS
Well uh kinda
That is my job. That is what I was programmed to do. I get in your way for a living.
Oh nooooooo
Well, I guess this is a two-phase fight! Here we—
NOPE
Fungah is a great word. I want to use that word.
WHO NEEDS PHYSICS I'LL JUST STAND ON THE CHAIN
*everything starts shaking, which is hard to portray in screenshots*
THE PHYSICS GODS HAVE FINALLY CAUGHT UP AND ARE ANGRY
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAH
I would just like to confirm that, yes, it does indeed make the pipe noise when Mario falls in the pipe
I don't need your sass you fungus
OH UM ABOUT THAT
Um.
WA-HOO
Okay so something cool about Mario's Pad. If you hit this light thing!
The light goes out and Mario crashes like a fucking nerd. The screen fades into black and the "DEEEEEOOOOWIP" sound from Super Mario World plays.
So anyway, that's cool!
Something else that I like is that you can literally jump on, like, everything. And there are actually quite a few secrets you can get this way, which is cool.
AND YOU CAN JUMP ON THE BED AND IT'S SUPER BOUNCY AND GOES BOING BOING BOING AND IT'S FUN AND I LOVE IT
...
*blubbering* I'MS ORRY I TRIED AND I JUMPED AND WENT BEEEEW AND I LANDED ON THE CHANDELIER AND FOUGHT BOWSER AND he was so ugly BUT I BEAT HIM BY JIMPING ON THE CHAIN AND I THOUGH T THE GAME WAS OVER AND I W AS HAPPY BUT THEN HE CHEATED AND THREW A HAMMER AND IM SO BUMMED AND THEN THE PHYSICS GODs DIDNT LIKE IT SO THEY EJECTED ME AND I WENT INTO A PIPE AND I WAS ON MY CLOTHING RACK AND SOEM NERD GOT ALL SNARKY WITH ME AND I DIDNT LIKE IT AND IM SO BAD IM SORRY
Uh yeah sure
Oh um
He means a literal jump, by the way. You hop and do the saving.
HOP
Here's the save menu...
And here's the save menu with my name on it! Yaaaaay
Alrighty, now if Toad's done being a dundernugget, then let's-a go!
Here's the world map, as you can see. It is labelled. We are at Mario's Pad. It is also labelled.
Let's head to Bowser's Keep (labelled)!
Bowser's Keep is here!
RAAAAAR ILL GET U THIS TIME YOU FLUFFMUNCHER
WHOA WHAT THE HECK
Oh noooooooooo
That doesn't sound good. In fact that sounds bad.
What characters we're all real I do not see the problem here
He does this thing where he chomps his mouth really fast and the ground shakes and all of this is very hard to portray in screenshots but trust me, it's bad.
SEE? BAD.
WHY ARE ALL THE BRIDGES FALLING TODAY
Welp.
Now the map only goes to Vista Hill (labelled).
I just noticed Bowser managed to settle himself on a mountain literally shaped like himself. Like, what the heck. How.
If you go to Vista Hill, it just shows you this viewpoint again, so let's not do this again!
TOOOOOOOOOOOAD A SWORD CALLED ME MEAN NAMES AND CHOMPED THE BRIDGE AWAY AND HE WAS SO MEAN WAAAAH
I forgot you were a fucking nerd
*BLUBBERS*
Or we can just act it out. Acting it out is cool.
Does Mario communicate everything in performances and everyone just sort of accepted it and can now speak his language or
Action! I'm all for action. Let's do action.
WAH
Mushroom Kingdom is famous world-round for its "Shrooms"
I really have no idea! I've never eaten something before. Not once, Toad
There are some things on here that we will talk about later, so don't worry about those! Let's just focus on Items for now.
"Here" being where Toad is standing. Jussoyaknow.
Okee-dokee!
I'M SO PROUD
Toad I am always feeling tired. I am never not tired. My natural state is tired.
Well golly-gee
I've always found that phrase kinda disturbing. It implies they were very nearly in more than one piece. Toad nearly got fucking sliced in half by a Goomba, everyone, nbd
I've given them the spiel already, Toad, don't worry. :B
Goomba's like, "YIKES! Sorry my homebro. I don't want to start no fights here with your goshderngled Timed Hits mojo yo."
Alternatively, this exchange occurs:
MARIO: DO YOU BITE YOUR THUMB AT US, SIR
GOOMBA: I DO BITE MY THUMB, SIR
MARIO: DO YOU BITE YOUR THUMB AT US, SIR
GOOMBA (TO TOAD): IS THE LAW OF MY SIDE IF I SAY AYE?
TOAD (TO GOOMBA): NO.
GOOMBA: I DO NOT BITE MY THUMB AT YOU SIR BUT I DO BITE MY THUMB SIR
Goomba: wait i don't have thumbs what
Was that not the thing you had to tell us.
Toad. We had this discussion already. Toad what are you doing. Stahp.
> Implying Mario's house is not in the Mushroom Kingdom
Yaaaay!
Saving real quick.
And now we move on to Mushroom Way, to the east! Labelled.
And I think we're gonna stop here! Next time, we'll be making our way through Mushroom Way. Dari out!

Super Mario RPG! (Part 2—The Road is Full of Dangers)
I didn't want to spoil you guys by having a double-update weekend right away, buuuuut... I got bored, so here ya go! :V
- update:
Last time on Super Mario RPG, we defeated the evil King Bowser and rescued the Princess from oh wait no we did not do that. Actually, a giant talking sword got in the way. r00d.
Anyway, this time around, we'll be exploring Mushroom WaooooowhahWHOA
...I SAVED RIGHT BEFORE AN ENEMY ENCOUNTER NICE. COOL
So anyway, as we're beating this Goomba up, I guess I should tell you about these guys. As you'd expect for a Goomba, they're fairly weak (only 16 HP, and as you see, we can already deal more than that unarmed) and don't deal much damage. They have a biting attack and a spike attack, which is just like Bowser's spike attack except these guys shoot their spikes out of their mouths for some reason.
Oh, hey! Cool, I get to mention this already. Every once in awhile when you defeat an enemy, you'll get a flower. These flowers can do various things. Obviously, this one maxes out your HP (which... it already was maxed out, so :U). Later on we'll run into other cool ones that do stuff like raise your attack or let you attack again. We'll go over those when we get to them.
There's the experience points we've heard so much about!
No coins though. Sad face.
By the way, remember when we slept at Mario's Pad last time? Well, I forgot to mention that that's basically a free full heal, so you get your health and FP back. Which is pretty cool if you don't wanna waste healing items just yet.
See? Full health. You didn't actually see me lose health, but uh, trust me, I did. I've fought a few battles that I didn't show you, after that one Goomba one. :B
So yeah, I'll only actually be showing certain battles. Battles will only be shown if:- Something interesting happens
- Something funny happens
- It's a scripted battle
- It's a boss battle
- It introduces a new enemy
Uh-huh. Dem's da rules.
As you can see, floating treasure chests are basically the question mark blocks of this game.
And some of them are mean and place enemies near them so you get tricked into fighting them. >:C
So, Koopa Paratroopas! ...Is what these would be called if this was a competent translation.._.
Yeah, some of the translation errors are really weird in this game. Some common Mario enemies are called by vastly different names.
For example, these are called Sky Troopas.
It's weird, because this game was (partly) translated by Ted Woolsey, a.k.a. pretty much the best translator ever. Usually when he renames things or changes dialogue they get better, but it doesn't seem to be so with this game.
Anyway, these guys have high defense, so punching doesn't work well. But they're weak to Jump attacks.
See? Weak.
Yeah, this game has some subtle Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors stuff going on, which I like.
I should note, I found this out after the previous update: Your Jump attack actually increases in power every 2 times you use it. So if you use it enough, it effectively becomes the most powerful attack in the game. But in favor of variety, I'm not gonna try to go for that. :V
And as you can see, sometimes enemies drop items. Standard RPG fare.
Oh, hey, I got a level-up on a pack of Goombas! :O
I think I'm gonna go with HP, because tbh, I'm pretty bad at blocking.
The POW one increases your Physical Attack and Physical Defense, while the star one increases your Special Attack and Special Defense.
Toad what are we gonna do with u
Toad. It was a Goomba. Just a Goomba. No need for this drama
Honey Syrups restore 10 FP.
See that Goomba on the flower over there? You gotsta beat that Goomba on the flower over there.
I beat that Goomba on the flower over here!
This red flower is actually spinning around in 8 directions. And if you jump off...
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
It launches you very far with no directional control at all and it is fun :D
So you have to time your jumps correctly to get up these cliff small mesa plateau big rocky grass things. Official term.
Oh hey! These white flowers do something cool.
They automatically increase your FP by 1! You don't even need to go into the inventory, they just do it whenever you find one in a chest.
Notice they don't replenish your FP, though.
What's over heeeeeere
Nothing...?
OH WAIT NO THAT IS SOMETHING
Yeah. Sometimes the game sets traps like this for you. Not fun. No no no.
Tooooooooooooooooad
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Why do we let you outside the castle
Crap, I'm out of FP.
This is gonna suck.
Yeah, see, punches don't really work.
...WHAT. WHAT. ONE HIT? PUNCHES WORK. THIS JUST IN. PUNCHES WORK.
I HAVE BEEN WASTING FP THIS ENTIRE TIME.
GEE. 1 EXP. 1 COIN. THANKS
I'd appreciate it if you weren't such a nerd Toad pls
OOOOO NEVERMIND ABOUT CALLING U A NERD
These things are cool! Not only do they increase your FP, buuuut...
They replenish it as well!
So yeah, I'd recommend saving at least one of those at all times for healing purposes.
GAME WHY
HAH TAKE THAT GOOMBA
Yeah, the Mushrooms with yellow dots automatically replenish your HP. So cool.
Making my way downtown~
Walking fast~
WALKING FASTER
Crap.
Yeah, that's a Spiny, but for some reason they're called Spikeys in this game. They're thrown by Lakitu both in and out of battle.
If you try to jump on them...
Unlike future Mario RPGs, they don't hurt you if you Jump on their spikes, but they're still immune to Jump attacks. Punching them is basically the only way to take them out right now.
Ah.
That... actually looks like a valid situation to be captured in, Toad. :U
Yeeeeeeah... Thinkin' I'm just gonna heal first before fighting this guy.
Yeah, see, these are not optimal fighting conditions.
I could use these healing items, but I kinda don't wanna waste them when we're so obviously about to start a miniboss fight.
SORRY TOAD I GUESS YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT TIL MORNING
Time to rumble!
Aaaaaaand he inexplicably splits in two as soon as the battle starts. :U
These guys have moderate attack and high defense, and more HP than we've really seen before from an attacking enemy. (The Kinklinks had more, but those didn't really attack. And Bowser had more, but it's so much you can't really beat him at that point in the game without attacking the Kinklink. It'd be interesting to see what does happen if you beat him, though.)
Time to attack!
That's a respectable amount of damage.
This is their regular attack, their whole hammer thing.
Aaaaand... the damage is rather pathetic.
Well, I guess it's not bad for what percentage of our health it is right now, but still, giant muscular armored dude with hammer should do more damage to pudgy plumber with overalls.
NINTENDO. THAT NAME. STAHP
This is basically the enemy version of a Special Attack.
He tosses hammers and...
It hurts quite a bit!
HYAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Wait what.
That's. What.
Already. That's all it takes.
...Damn, I must've sucked as a kid, these guys nearly always took me out. It only took two Jumps to get one down. >_>
Noooooooooo
I don't know what that does but I'm willing to bet it raises Defense.
Yeah, it raises defense.
This is gonna be fun...
Noooooooooooooooo
Mario's a manly man.
He drinks Honey Syrup straight out of the JAR.
And it gives him FLOWERS.
Because he's MANLY.
THE MAN'S MAN.
HYAAAAAAA
OOOOOOOO FLOWER JAR
Those things raise FP by 3 and fully restore FP! Nice.
That'll teach you about speeding mister.
Gee I wonder what could have possibly brought a hammer into this situation recently.
It's almost like we just battled two Hammer Bros.
...
Naaaaaaaaaaaaah
WE GET TO BONK PEOPLE
And with that, we have our first weapon!
Okee-doke!
To the Mushroom Kingdom!
...Next time! See ya later!- Something interesting happens

IIRC the enemy names are wonky because Woolsey didn't have a bunch of experience with the Mario series, so he went more literally than someone who was more familiar would have.

Re: Super Mario RPG! (Part 11—The Beast Belome)
Just a heads-up for you guys on the update schedule: Until graduation, I'll likely be releasing at least one update every other weekend.
I go to a vocational school, so we have an A week (shop week) and B week (academic week). The weekend before a shop week is the best chance for me to get an update in, since I have a whole week after that to worry about academic homework. The weekend before an academic week is usually reserved for last-minute scrambling. :B
So yeah, most likely a biweekly schedule for awhile here. We'll see if I can keep up the double-update weekends to make up for it, but don't count on it.

Super Mario RPG! (Part 3—Hello, Happy Kingdom!)
- update:
Hey guys, this is your host Caprizant and welcome back for a fresh helping of Super Mario RPG!
Last time around, we took on Mushroom Way and defeated the Hammer Bros., gaining their hammer! Oh yeah, and Toad got himself captured a lot.
Anyway, this update we will be exploring Mushroom Kingdom and hopefully talking to the Chancellor about the whole sword-in-castle issue. And marveling over the fact that the entirety of the Mushroom Kingdom in this game appears to be... a small town. :V
That's, like, the third time this week. Ugh, so inconvenient.
Let's go in the house.
If you're the big red brother, is he the green little brother?
HE IS THE GREEN LITTLE BROTHER.
WHY ARE BROTHERS COLOR CODED IN THESE GAMES.
IT IS A VAST CONSPIRACY.
At least he seems to be having fun jumping on the bed and all.
hahaha what
sure why not. you go kid. you go
Aaaaand he keeps jumping, except like, super fast. Really fast.
Oh yeah, and you can jump on people's heads in this game. SO COOL.
ACK
That is a rather specific description and I do not think I've seen anyone fitting that description.
WHOOPS
Well, let's check out the house down there! With the door! Yeah, that one!
Aren't you supposed to date first I think you skipped a step.
Not yet! I'm sure we'll come across that at some point in the future. It will certainly not be plot relevant. Almost positive we'll never see these guys again. Yep.
That kid down there is sprinting hard like she's Usain Bolt or something.
Shhhhh. Slow down kid. Shhhh. No need to run yet. You have yet to pay taxes.
Kidnapped by Bowser all the time?
Sorry but my ship has already come into port and dropped anchor and it is unlikely to ever go back out to sea
You can step on her head and she brings you along with her really really fast!
BUT THEN IT JUST BECOMES TOO MUCH
Mario's fucking dead
WELL APPARENTLY THEY HAVE BEEN IN TOWN ON YOUR WATCH IF THAT GUY GOT HIS WALLET STOLEN BY CROCODILE AL CAPONE
It looks like they sell shrooms here!
We'll buy stuff here later, I just wanna get something out of the way first.
And it's down here!
OK.
OK?
OK!
OOOOOOOO
Neato!
Um...
There's another hidden treasure somewhere around here in the room, but I spent awhile trying to get this guy to cooperate with me to find it and it just got tedious and I'll do it later. :I
In the meantime, jump on here!
Do a victory pose!
GET YELLED AT
And then get down. :<
Will this place make us invincible? :o
We're inn!
As you can see, every inn has a save block. And a creepy child in the corner. Legal requirement.
Wow rude.
Fine.
...
MAYBE IF U WERENT SO RUDE GOSH
That's a pretty reasonable price, but no.
Resting gives you a full heal, btw.
Time to save! :D
Y'know, in case this clone has an incident. :V
Aw look at this guy having a nice nap. Be a shame to wake him up.
HEY DUDE WAKE UP I'M STANDING ON UR HEAD.
Just 23½ hours a day.
Anyway, enough wandering around, let's go in!
If you're going for 100%, be careful here! Save before entering. There's something that you can ONLY DO at this point of the game and you only get one shot.
If you jump on Toad's head...
And try to get a good aim at that ledge...
HYAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I made it!
Hidden treasure!
And just like that, we got our first Frog Coin of the game!
See? Frog Coin! :D
Those can only be used at a certain shop that we'll run into later. Trust me, that was worth it.
Exasperated, at everything, such as the stars, and life, and how we don't seem to lock the goddamn doors when Bowser's in town, and
PEACH'S BED LOOKS SUPER COMFY
There's something funny that happens in this room but I'm waiting for a later point in the game in case you can't do it again.
Going up!
Why in the world would he do that
BOUNCY BOUNCY BOUNCY
At certain points in the game you can come back in the guest room and find people hanging out there. Not gonna say who they are 'cause that's a surprise!
Darn I forgot.
TOAD IS MAGIC. HE CAN STOP MARIO FROM WALKING INTO EMPTY SPACE.
alternatively, he locked the door but that's no fun
Your... spores.
WHA
Well um you see about that
Acting time!
Mario found out Peach was gone. He sang loudly to the sky.
And then he suddenly shaPESHIFTED INTO BOWSER
THIS MADE MARIO-BOWSER FURIOUS. SO UGLY
But lo! Peach descended from the sky to save him
He's on a rampage! He cannot control himself! Peach must get help!
Peach sang to the sky and the sky said "Mario get your shit together" and Mario got his shit together and was no longer Bowser. The end.
Have you been listening
Oh.
WELL ABOUT THAT.
Forget everything I said about Mario shapeshifting into Bowser. Here's the real story.
Bowser invited Peach up for a comedy festival.
AND THEN EVIL MARIO PUNCHED BOWSER BECAUSE MARIO HATES JOKES.
Bowser was surprised at being punched.
So surprised, he turned into Peach.
Mario praised the sun for Peach's safe return!
BUT THEN THERE WAS AN EARTHQUAKE.
AND MARIO WAS ABDUCTED BY ALIENS.
Toad looked everywhere for Mario.
And then the aliens let him go!
But the landing was not soft.
Mario had no clue where he was. He looked around. A tumbleweed passed by ominously.
He eventually found his way back to Bowser's Keep.
But then!
THE ALIENS RAINED METEORS UPON HIM!
It was too much. He had to retreat.
The comedy festival performers did not survive.
Hell knows where Peach is.
The power of ALIENS.
Okay no. I made that up. I made all of that up.
That is my job. That is what I am not paid to do.
What is iiiiit
Oh um. No. No I haven't yet, actually. :B
Whoa whoa whoa let's not get ahead of ourselves here
No. Just no.
Toad is not necessary. Nothing about him is necessary
I'm sure I will! :D
WHAT NOW.
I don't think I've ever actually used that. I don't think I have.
ACK
WHUH
UGH
OOF
No.
OK.
RUN AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
Oh yeah, I didn't mention the last couple updates. You can run by holding down Y. That is a thing you can do.
...HOW
I HAVE NOT SEEN HIM
HOW HAS HE DONE THIS
LOOT
Neato!
We've already seen this one.
Ohhhh I forgot it did both!
By "find as items," I believe he means stuff that ends up in your inventory. The ones with white dots that you can get in shops, as drops, in treasure chests, etc. The yellow-dot ones are exclusively in treasure chests and are used automatically.
Aaaaand that's a good place to stop! See you guys next time!

Hey guys, sorry for the huge gulf in updates! It was pretty busy for awhile there.
But, now I'm on April vacation, so I'll try to get at least a couple of updates out this week! I'm gonna start one right now. See ya in a bit!

Super Mario RPG! (Part 4—A New Partner)
- update:
Hey guys! Long time, no see! Except I see you guys nearly every day so it's not really like that but it's been a long time for Mario at least so it holds true for him!
Since you probably need a refresher, last time we explored the Mushroom Kingdom which is... a single town, and informed the Chancellor of the abduction of the Princess, as well as the appearance of the mysterious giant sword!
This time around, we'll be starting our adventure by um... well, I don't think we got a real clear objective, but as always in video game land I'm sure that means that we're about to be interrupted with one that will conveniently tie into our quest!
Well would ya lookit that.
As you can see, I've started taking GIF screenshots with GIF Cam! As suggested by Bean quite a long time ago. :B
This will be limited to scenes in the game which are particularly difficult to capture in still shots. Hopefully it doesn't slow down anyone's load-times too badly!
That... is a surprisingly applicable insult.
WELL. Um.
I'm sure the weather changing just as this kid starts crying has nothing to do with anything and was pure coincidence! Very certain this boy does not have weather powers at all! Nope!
No I am literally the Sahara Desert
FACEPLANT
It'll come to ya eventually kid
YOU'D THINK HE'D REMEMBER BEING ROBBED BUT NOOOOOO
Okie dokie!
This is basically Mario's autograph.
Weeeeeell we did already defeat him once this gaaaaaame...
That means Mario has at least, like, 12 jump.
A... frog.
Ummm should I be the nice video game person or the not nice video game person...
This is the decision that sends me to the Underwhere. >:D
Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine
JOYOUS DAY, O! JOYOUS DAY
Even the game text be snarkin' it all up at this boy.
And with that, we now have our first partner, Mallow!
As you can see, he starts off at Level 2, same as our Mario. Not sure how this works? I don't know if he's always Level 2, or if he always matches Mario's Level. Hm.
Anyway, there is a thing I bet you have all been screaming at your screens for me to do!
Time to equip our Hammer!
As you can see, each team member has three slots for equipment: Weapon, Armor, and Accessory. Weapons are generally themed damage-dealing items, each team member has a special set of Weapons which get better and better as the game goes along.
Armor is generally for defensive purposes. Once again, each team member has a special set of Armor that they can use, and you can get better Armor throughout the game.
Accessories, meanwhile, are generally for any team member and provide special battle effects for that member. Some of them alter stats, some prevent certain status effects, etc. Pretty simple system.
Just select the equipment you want to replace...
Then select what you want to equip!
Notice that the stats field at the bottom left changes as you hover over the equipment. It shows an up arrow if the equipment will increase a stat, a down arrow if it will decrease it, and nothing if it stays exactly the same. The Hammer ups our Attack by 10, from 23 to 33.
Boom! There we go. Hammer equipped!
To get a Timed Hit with the Hammer, it's pretty much the same as plain ol' punching. Press A just before the first swing, and Mario will get a second swing in.
I think that's about all for this time! I want to keep it short just to get myself in the habit again. Also, that's all that I had recorded from the many many weeks ago when I did the last update and recorded a bit extra than I meant to. :B
But yeah, next time we're going to help Mallow find the mysterious crocodile mobster who stole his coin! See ya later.

AFAIK, Mallow always joins at Level 2, no matter what.
Even if you managed to grab 95,734 EXP for Level 30 before you get him. He'll always be level 2.

Well, at least at this point in the game he's probably not too far away from you. Some of the later partners might be underleveled, depending on how much you grind.

Super Mario RPG! (Part 5—Still, the Road is Full of Dangers)
- update:
Hey, everybody! Welcome back to my Let's Play of Super Mario RPG!
Last time around, we got our first ever party member, the "frog" Mallow! This time around, we're gonna be helping Mallow get his coin back from a purple crocodile mobster so he can run his errand properly. So let's hop to it!
(Hop? Like a frog? ...Get it? ...I'm sorry.)
And now that we're using GIFs for screenshots I can FINALLY show you JUST HOW FAST this kid runs! Seriously. She's like lightning.
(There are some frames lost using this tool but it's not really significant most of the time.)
NOW. We have a score to settle.
Remember this guy? In the basement of the Item Shop? As I've said, you can find a hidden item block down here. It requires you to step on his head and jump in a very specific spot.
THIS GUY IS VERY UNCOOPERATIVE. He does not like taking your directions. >:c
...If you try forcing him into the correct spot, that is. If you just come downstairs and stand on his head instead of blocking his path around the room, he seems more inclined to venture towards the hidden item spot.
Just hit it once to reveal it...
And hit it again to get a flower!
(Just a refresher, since it's been awhile: That will increase your total FP by one. It's used automatically, so it never goes to your inventory.)
When you're jumping back onto the guy's head to hit the box the second time, make sure you don't accidentally jump up the stairs and onto the first floor. The room will reset so you'll have to reveal the box again.
We have nothing left to do in town now, except see what this guy has to say when we try to walk out of it.
Speak up, valiant mushroom retainer!
Well um I'm not sure you've given me a rather broad question
Once again, Mario's superb acting skills coming through!
...I guess Mushroom Kingdom really doesn't mess around with what weapons they give their guards!
Now doesn't that sound familiar? :O
PURPLE CROCODILE MOBSTER
I like to imagine Mallow just stretching out the "M" sound a lot there. It's HIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
You sir, you get a jump on the head sir, because you did not do your job correctly and you let the purple thiefodile out of town good sir. A jump on the head for you.
Once we're out of town we can see that a new path has opened up on the world map! It leads us to...
Bandit's Way! Let's dive right in.
IT'S HIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Mallow says that like we're gonna get Croco back for stealing his coin by stealing him
Just put Croco in our bag and take him away
We don't have this kid's home on the map yet, though
Aaaaaand he runs away. :V
We could chase after him immediately, buuuuuut...
I wanna defeat the enemies in this area first!
This would be a good area to show off the Hammer!
Anyway, as I said before, to land a Timed Hit with the Hammer you have to press A just before a-thwackin'.
...Seems our Hammer works at long-distance. Hm.
Meanwhile, just like Mario...
Mallow's basic attack is a simple one-two punch!
And that's it! Victory pose!!
Oh, hey! Look at that! While I was battling the Spikeys on the route, I found a new enemy!
That is a Frogog, our first encounter ENTIRELY unique to Super Mario RPG! You're gonna be seeing quite a few of those.
These guys have decent defenses (8 Defense, 8 Magic Defense) and a reasonably high attack stat (15). You're never gonna find them in the field; they always pair up with other enemies. They're pretty strong for this early in the game, and take awhile to defeat, due to having 80 HP. However, they're weak to electricity and fire.
And there we are!
While it's relevant, I suppose I should go over stats and special attacks.
If you open up your menu and go to "Status"...
...You can see what everyone's stats are! In each category, the top number is the stat unboosted by equipment, while the bottom number is the stat with equipment on. At the bottom you can see the amount of experience the party member currently has, as well as how much experience they need to reach their next level.
As you can see, Mario's stats are pretty basic: Decent speed, decent attack stats, "eh" defenses. He has a good amount of HP throughout the game, and is all-around a good attacker. And he'd need to be, considering he's the only party member you're required to keep on the field at all times.
Also, he gets some pretty awesome equipment down the line, so that's nothing to sneeze at.
Mallow, meanwhile, is pretty much our resident mage at this point. He has a lot of special moves that enemies are weak to, and he can heal pretty well with a certain attack coming up. Later in the game he overlaps with a couple other party members, but his AoE attacks and super-effective coverage keeps him in the running. His speed and physical attacks are pretty bad, though.
Now for the special attack screen!
Here you've got a list of each party member's special moves. Mario and Mallow have one each right now, but as you can see, Mario's learning a new one at Level 3.
Jump is blacked out, because we can't use it in the field. Some special attacks, like healing ones, can be used in the field.
At the bottom you can see the power of a move, the amount of FP it uses, and the conditions for a Timed Hit. A Jump, of course, means you have to push Y just before landing.
Mallow currently has Thunderbolt (which, as I've said, Frogogs are weak to). It's a bit weaker than a Jump, but it makes up for that by hitting all enemies on the field susceptible to electric damage. Hit Y just before the bolts of lightning stop and you'll get a Timed Hit. (We'll be seeing this attack in the next update.)
It's worth noting that FP is shared between party members, so whenever you use a special attack, it pulls from a pool of FP that everyone uses. This can deplete FP rather quickly if you have a lot of magic attackers out at once, but on the plus side replenishing your FP mid-battle is easy.
And it looks like Mallow's also learning something new at Level 3. He has a bit further to go than Mario to get there, though.
By the way, there's a save block in the bottom-left corner of this area.
JUMP
...Crap :1
Did it right this time! Mario's happy for me.
Anyway, I think that's enough for this time! We found Croco, and started making our way through Bandit's Way. Next time, we'll be trekking on through the rest of this area in pursuit of that crooked croc Croco. See ya soon!

Super Mario RPG! (Part 6—Invincible Star!!)
- update:
Hello everyone! We're back for another update of... *drumroll* Super Mario RPG!
Last time around, we chased Croco into Bandit's Way and cleared some new enemies there! This time around we'll be going through the rest of Bandit's Way in pursuit of Mallow's coin. Fun!
But first, while I was clearing the last enemy in this map square, I got a new Bonus Flower! This one's called Attack Up, and as you'd guess, that raises Attack. The party member who gets this deals 50% more damage for the rest of the battle.
Enough blibbering and blabbering, let's head onto the next area!
And despite us spending a whole TWO DAYS on the other side of that path, Barney is still right here in front of us!
Well, unfortunately for him...
Mallow is not the one doing the jumping, because he is currently in whatever quantum zone of existence partners go to when we're out on the field! So, Mario's doing the jumping instead! >:D
Now, these platforms! These are a new mechanic.
If we hop from one to the other...
The first platform moves to the front, allowing us to cross large gaps! Like so!
...
Well, I guess my terrible platforming skills want it to be time to go over a new enemy, so here goes!
This is a K-9. They're little blue wolf-like things with weird... blinky... robot eyes. Yeah.
But hang on a sec! Robotic dog named K-9? Now where have I heard that before...? Oh, right!- image:
Yes, believe it or not, this thing's English name is a Doctor Who reference! ...Possibly. The translators have never really said anything about it, but the parallels are there. :V
Anyway, onto the actual enemy. This thing can be pretty dangerous at this point in the game. For example, if it uses its "Fangs" attack...
It can do quite a bit of damage! As you can see, it took away 15 HP from Mallow, which at this point of the game, is three quarters of his health. Yikes.
It's alright though, because they only have 30 HP, which shouldn't be too tough to take out.
Let's try our Thunderbolt out on these guys!
I... don't remember how to tell if that was a Timed Hit or not. :U
But anyway, yeah, hit Y at the end of the Thunderbolt and it should be a Timed Hit! Nice to damage all enemies on the field, though it seems the K-9 has a better Magic Defense stat than the Spikey. Which is true.
And there it is!
*tiny gasp*
There's his new stats! Except...
OOOOO WAIT A MOMENT NEW ATTACK
Now we have Fire Orb! That will do Fire damage to enemies, meaning that enemies weak to fire will now fear our almighty orb! >:D
We'll see that in a battle in a bit.
I think I'm gonna go for POW on this one. Gotta bulk up Mario's status as an attacker this time around.
I know I went for HP last time around, but I generally wouldn't recommend doing that most of the time, just because it's not as useful as the other two options. If you choose POW or Special, you get a defense buff AND an attack buff, whereas with HP you effectively ONLY get a defense buff. The HP you get without doing the bonus is usually sufficient, anyway.
And there we are! Got a little bit extra oomph to our physical attacks, and we can take a little bit more physical damage as well.
It's worth mentioning that every time you defeat a K-9 on this route, another one respawns in its place anyway. So you can't really "clear out" the area. It's good for grinding, though.
While I was playing the game, I apparently decided not to risk going back for that coin, which... looking back on it, was a stupid decision. Even if it is just one coin. :B
And now we're on the other side!
No, not death. Just the other side of the area. :U
Now, I believe there's a hidden item between these two flowers...
YEEEEES! You do NOT want to miss this, Kerokero Cola is one of the BEST healing items in the entire game. It's essentially a full heal for the ENTIRE team. All HP and FP for all conscious party members will be restored if you use this item. SAVE THIS. It's going to be useful late-game.
Alternatively, you could take it to the shop and sell it for 200 coins. But where's the fun in that?
IT'S HIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
a) "I'm a one hundred miles ahead of ya" is poor grammar
b) That statement is clearly false because you're like 3 feet away
Aaaand he's off.
In this area, there's a few branching paths. The one that Croco takes generally has the monsters, so if you want to avoid battles, then go the opposite way that he goes.
See? That path with the Goomba is the way he ran off, while the way that I came (on the right) had no enemies at all.
Towards the end of this area you'll find this specific fork in the road. If you go right...
There's a K-9 guarding a treasure chest!
HYAAAAAAAAAAAA
... I FORGOT TO HEAL MALLOW, CRAP
Against present-me's better judgment, past-me decides to show off Fire Orb on this fire-weak Frogog rather than heal our marshmallow matey! Let's see how this turns out.
As you can see, even though that wasn't the best execution of Fire Orb in the world, we still took out that Frogog pretty easily, whereas before it would take several turns to take one out. So yeah, it's a good idea to exploit enemies' weaknesses.
Thankfully, the K-9 went for Mario, which gave Mallow a chance to heal before he took any damage.
And it looks like we were just in time!
... Nevermind!
Oh nooooooooooo
Yeah, as you can see, Howl causes a new type of status affliction: Fear. This halves your attack and defense. Howl is an unblockable move, so if a K-9 uses it, there's nothing you can do about it unless the targeted partner happens to have equipment that prevents Fear.
Oh, nice! Every once in awhile when you use an item, you get a "freebie," meaning that item stays in your inventory and you get to use it again.
I'm... not sure how that works, physically. Did Mario... like... throw up that Mushroom, and now we get to use it again?
... Gross.
I just noticed that the background of the exp-coin screen is a two-fingered victory sign, like Mario and Mallow give you. I did not notice that all these years. :U
Now it's time to see what was in this box the whole time!
... Was that an automatic healing Mushroom? I think it was.
Yeah, it totally was.
... Are you telling me I didn't need to use all those healing items in that battle? Lame.
Well, there's no complaining about a full heal! At least we got a freebie in the battle so we didn't waste TWO Mushrooms.
ONWAAAARDS!
Can I—can I just—just—can I just select the Frogog please—please—PLEASE
THANK YOU
Alright, 100! Y'see, that's what a REAL Fire Orb looks like.
Oh hey, we got a Honey Syrup out of that! Not sure if we've gone over that before, that restores... I believe 10 FP? Not sure.
Level up for Mallow!
A good jump in defense and HP, rather normal everywhere else.
There's our first healing move! We don't see it this update, but this can heal HP both in and out of battle. To get a Timed Hit on this, press Y just after the cloud disappears to heal all HP. Otherwise, it only heals some.
Just like with Mario, I'll do an HP bonus for the first level, even if it's technically not the BEST usage I can get out of it.
... Yeah, I dunno why I did that either. :B
OH NO YOU DON'T SONNY
Oh come on Croco, you were almost there! You're so impatient.
Aaaand he runs off.
I guess that's our cue to check what's in this treasure chest!
These are similar to those stepping stones we saw before, in the sense that when you jump onto the next platform, the first one does something. In this case, the platforms rotate around each other, so you have a broader range of motion than just a straight line like the other platforms had. However, these are slower and can be a bit trickier to jump to depending on the angle.
But our reward is worth it because...
WE GET A STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR
We can defeat these K-9s just by touching them, without even going into battle! And guess what? We get full experience! And for every K-9 you defeat, another one charges in! :D
But eventually the star wears out and CRAP.
Well, at least we recovered our lost Mushroom out of that battle!
... We used up the Honey Syrup, though. He died well. A noble sacrifice.
... WE GOT A FULL FP HEAL OUT OF THIS TREASURE CHEST ANYWAY. OF COURSE.
Our Honey Syrup died in vain
WELL ANYWAY, after much fiddling and finagling and fillydallying, it's time to head onto the next area! I'm sure Croco waited for us anyway, he's nice like that.
... Oh. I guess we didn't get a full FP heal out of that. I keep forgetting the flowers only increase your FP by 1, not restore it.
OUR HONEY SYRUP DID NOT DIE IN VAIN!
You'd think he'd learn by now.
Oooooor you could use that super speed of yours to just zoom past us because you've done that before
But uh sure whatever if you want to help us that's fine too
And he sort of... glides... off into hiding, without even using his legs. Hm.
Sure thing, Mallow!
... Next time! We're ending it off here!
... OUR HONEY SYRUP DID DIE IN VAIN
Anyway, that's it for this update! Next time, we'll be playing hide 'n' seek with Croco the crooked crocodile! See you guys then.
