The Lifehack Thread
Ever find a cool time-saving tool that you want to share with everyone? Some heretofore unknown tip that everyone should know? Post it here! One famous source of these is the website Lifehacker, which I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for a simpler way of doing things.
I'd like to share a couple of web tools that I've found incredibly useful.
Hemingway—an online text editor that highlights grammar/spelling mistakes and bad practices. Incredibly useful for essays and the like. Use your better judgment when editing with it, though; you may know more than it does. It's programmed to automatically identify these things, which means that sometimes it can be wrong. Use it as a quick finder for run-on sentences, adverbs, passive voice, words that can be simpler, etc. If it sounds natural, though, keep it.
Lazarus (Chrome/Firefox)—I know every single member of this forum has had this exact issue at least once. If you have ever been typing an incredibly long post, felt proud of your work, and then—oops!—your browser crashes: Lazarus is your friend. It automatically saves content entered in web forms every once in awhile, so you can just right click and paste it when the browser reloads. It's completely separate from the clipboard, so it'll still be there if you copy something, and won't overwrite anything on the clipboard. Even if you don't think you need it now, you will need it in the future, so you'll be eternally grateful if you have it.

double rightclick on a youtube video real fast and an option to loop will come up so that you don't have to keep pressing play or use a third party site

If you're worried your car won't pass emissions, go for a nice long drive in it to bring all the exhaust components up to operating temperature and then some. Be sure to reset your check engine if it is on and then take it into the shop. It won't work every time, but it's still worth a shot over buying several thousand dollars worth of parts and paying another thousand bucks to get the parts installed.

If attempting to view a shared picture on Skype and it redirects to your browser for your login info, merely putting in your hotmail account and hitting tab will log you in.

Just found a website called Slick Write, basically like the Hemingway App mentioned in the first post, except with a lot more customization and detail. Looks for things like weasel words, overused words, unprofessional writing, word flow, sentence structure, etc.

Re: The Lifehack Thread
In the last couple months, I found a couple productivity tools that have really helped me get back on track.
The first is called Tomighty. It's a little timer that uses the Pomodoro technique to allow you to work in short, focused bursts, with some breaktime in between. Really helps get things done.
The second tool is called Rainlendar. It's a desktop calendar that allows you to create, customize, and schedule a to-do list. You can set it to remind you of a task a certain amount of days ahead of its deadline. I've used it to schedule my goals for the summer so that every day there's only one thing I have to do.

I'll admit that I don't know how many of us use Google Chrome. But for those of us that do, I present to you BackStop!
As the name suggests, BackStop prevents the Backspace button from working as a back button, saving you time and sanity. Unfortunately, it's Google Chrome only.

I've used Chrome exclusively (well except for the couple times I've needed to redownload and install it) for several years now and I've never found such an extension necessary because over the past few years I have only accidentally gone back a few times.

Re: The Lifehack Thread
Better safe than sorry and all that jazz. (I'll admit that I don't have that many problems either, but it happened recently with my LP and I'd rather it not happen again.)

Re: The Lifehack Thread
Well one way you could avoid that problem completely is to write your entire LP post in a text document using NotePad, Word, whatever.

Re: The Lifehack Thread
Or using Lazarus, like I recommended in the first post, if you want the benefit of WYSIWYG editing :I

Re: The Lifehack Thread
A great add-on that I've been using for years: Stylish (Firefox/Chrome).
Basically, it adds custom user styles to websites. It's good if you want to customize the look, fix a bad redesign, or edit some functions for easier use. For me, it's come in especially handy for TV Tropes and Tumblr.
For example: Want to get rid of the ugly new TV Tropes layout? Install this style. That fixes a few things, but to fix it (almost) completely I've edited the code a bit.
That should make everything approximately nicer. :B
Let me know if there's any issues and I'll fix it.
There's also userstyles for displaying spoilers on mouseover and changing to a dark theme for night-time reading.

- firefox:
- Just click on the Stylish button, then "Manage styles," edit the Margin Fix style, and replace the code with this:
- Code:
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
@-moz-document domain("tvtropes.org") {
.container{ max-width: 92.6%; display: inherit; padding-left: 100px; }
.left-sidebar { display: none; }
.wrap { background-color: white; background-image: none; }
.footer-bottom { background: #EDEDED; }
}

Re: The Lifehack Thread
My history teacher showed this to us a couple weeks ago and I thought I'd share it with the other high-schoolers here. Snow Day Calculator!
Just enter in the ZIP code of your school, the number of snow days you've had this year so far, and the type of school, and it'll tell you the percent chance you'll have a snow day tomorrow. It's great, just don't plan your weekend around it.
Apparently I have an 80% chance of a snow day tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted if it's right. :B
