Who shall be in our party?
Legendary legend of legendariness (Dragon Quest III, this is)
The world, sheathed in darkness
is at the mercy of a mad king
A hero and his three companions
shall rise up
Charged with light,
the darkness is dispelled
and peace will return
-Sophia, Seeress
godammit why has nobody uploaded the title theme yet it's epic or at least the opening is
*ahem*
Dragon Quest III, known as Dragon Warrior III in the West due to legal issues, is where the series really began picking up in the East (Japan is the East, right?). It was so popular, in fact, people started using at-the-moment non-existant thief skills and mugged people for their copies! It is a really good game, obviously; Westerners were turned off by the graphics - not to mention it got here far later, and Final Fantasy (and the SNES, I believe) were starting to pick up steam, leaving poor Dragon Quest behind. It improved a fair bit on II's mechanics, mostly because of Final Fantasy's uprising; to combat FFI's four-member party with fixed jobs from the start, DQIII let people (that aren't the hero) change jobs after they were created, as long as a certain point in the story was reached and the character aspiring for a job change was at least level 20. So, let's introduce the jobs!
- Teh jobs (males on the right, females on the left):
- - The hero of the tale is the only required party member. All others are optional, but make the game *far* easier. The hero is basically a red mage - s/he gets both healing and support magic and can wield heavy-duty stuff. However, unlike classical red mages, s/he can access the best stuff - and even have a few spells of his/her own.
- Soldiers can equip heavy armor and huge swords - but are as slow as molasses and don't get any skills whatsoever.
- Fighters or martial artists or whatever are light on their feet. However, all weapons (except claws) lower their attack power (think Poo of Earthbound, except their weapons aren't fist-shakingly hard to get) and they don't have a lot of attack. Still, good agility and also good luck (raising critical%). Also, the female fighter looks adorable in her artwork.
- Mages are obviously quite squishy. They also suck at physicalness. However, they're good at casting magic, which can help get past a few high-defense enemies, plus they have some really helpful field magic (like StepGuard, which nullifies terrain damage until you switch the map you're on). The downside to this is that MP restoration is quite hard to come by, but with high intellect (which helps MP growth, I believe), this can be circumvented.
- Priests are the white mages, with a touch of debuffness (I, ironically enough, believe the debuffing spells go to the priest, while mages have the buffing spells - this includes the defense increasing spells). I believe they're better in combat then mages, too, for when a character doesn't need a limb healed back on.
- Merchants have two unique traits - one, they have the fastest level up growth in the game. Two, they have a unique passive ability to find more gold after battle. They're only slightly better then a priest when it comes to beating stuff up, though. The female merchant does, however, get points for looking adorable in her artwork.
- Jesters, as implied by one of their names, Goof-offs, goof off in battle. They gain heavy amounts of luck (meaning if you change one to a Fighter, you have a critical-hit machine), but are absolutely useless unless they decide on a whim to help you. Manage to get one to level 20, though...
(also, please, for the love of the goddess, don't vote for a male jester)
- Thieves started the tradition of thieves being named Lief. In addition, they can equip weapons that hit all enemies, and increase item drop chances (stealing from their dead corpses, see). They, along with boomerangs (I think; I know thieves are new) first appeared in this version of Dragon Quest III.
Sages get all mage and priest spells. They also are better at physical combat. Woo! However, they can only be unlocked with a special book, which there are a finite amount of. (whoever made the sprite sheet ((some guy named Koh)) forgot to put on the Sage sprites, hence the artwork)
So, vote for the three to be in our party, and their names (this includes the hero; also, determine the hero's gender)! That is all.

Oh, by the way, I meant three characters not including the hero. Four total.

Well, given that that's the only thing they can do (besides use items and defend), I'd hope so.

Look at them, they're hideous! If I want someone to be completely ineffectual at combat, they need to be hot!

Mostly being lazy. But don't worry, the computer is still working, so I can update it without having to go through the Marsh Cave again.

I'm also wondering what's going to happen to your other LPs.
At least I have a perfectly good excuse for my LP not ending properly

Re: Legendary legend of legendariness (Dragon Quest III, this is)
Chapter I - Call to Adventure
- In which we get our personality tested:
Random fact: In all Dragon Quest games ever, you can choose the name of your player character.
>Male
>Female
Text Speed: 1 (fast) - 8 (slow): 6
>Stereo(?)
>Mono
And so our hero begins in...some kind of forest thing. Weirdest place to start an adventure, I'd say. Let's go towards the light.
...which leads to the top of a cliff that goes to a waterfall where a weird voice is talking to us.
: It is I, the ruler of everything. Soon, Edgar, you will stand before me as a great hero...But before that happens, I want to find out want kind of person you are. Now answer me honestly. Are you ready?
: As I'll ever be.
*insert a ton of shit that was lost because I accidentally closed the tab *
Basically, we were asked a lot of questions and dumped off here. As a test, see. The problem is, the personalities (which modify stat growth) that come from here are all caster-based (or, worse, useless), which the hero (Edgar) isn't too good at doing. Eh, at least he'll be able to help the healing.
To get the theoretical "best" (by virtue of not getting a strength growth penalty) personality, we have to follow a few signs. This one says "PROCEED WEST".
So we go east.
The translators derped up; it's supposed to say north and west of here. So go south. (as per RPG directions, this means go down)
So we skip the (worthless anyway) treasure chests.
Then, we...
...meet a fair maiden trapped under a boulder!
: Fear not, fair maiden, I shall save you!
*push*
: I thought you were just going to leave me like that... Well, it's time for me to get going...Thank you again for saving me!someone remind me why that emoticon's named luma
Then the woman disappears. Jesus, , couldn't you have the thing end right then?
: Edgar, you are the honest type.
blah blah stuff that won't affect gameplay at all blah
Being Honest, however, does affect it by virtue of modifying Edgar's stat gains. Specifically, he gains 10% more Wisdom at level up (compared to his base value), but has 10% less Luck and Agility.
also mentions wanted to meet Edgar again someday. When I was originally playing this game on the Game Boy Color, I thought was the Goddess (or God or whoever the deity is). If so, s/he never does meet Edgar ever again. There's another thought I have on who s/he is, but I'll tell you about it when we meet her.
: Edgar! Wake up, Edgar!
: Today will be the first time you've ever been to the castle. I do believe I've raised you and prepared you for this day.
Edgar's mother then leaves the room.
Strength Seeds raise Strength, obviously.
: Come along with me, so I can see you off at the gates.
: And don't forget your manners in front of the king! Now... Off you go!
Note: it is possible to not talk to the king.
This is what happens.
: I was gone for, like, half a minute.
: Half a minute is a long time for a king!
He then basically tells us that we are to go kill some guy named Baramos and to get some companions because our father didn't and kinda died.
He then provides us with:
Or, to be specific, Traveler's Clothes, two clubs, and a cypress stick, not including Edgar's already-included Copper Sword and Traveler's Clothes.
Then I somehow reset the game and have to do that again. So instead, I don't and instead end up with this test:
We are a dragon. What personality we get depends on how many people we kill. I kill no one and get Valiant, which boosts strength growth by 40% but decreases agility and luck growth by 30% and wisdom growth by 20%.
We then go above Ruida's bar to get our party members. It starts out as just simply choosing their name, sex (no, not that kind), and job. Then we get to this:
The seeds (stat-boosting items, like what we got earlier) determine personality for the player mooks. I'd recommend Choose Stats, because otherwise the computer may do something dumb like give a wisdom seed to a melee guy.
Anyway, our party consists of:
Lief, the fearless male Thief
Luma, the happy (?) female Fighter
Lucy, the Romantic Cleric/Priest (irony FTW! ...plus, it gives agility and wisdom boosts)
That's where we'll leave off for today. Next time: actual exploring!

Re: Legendary legend of legendariness (Dragon Quest III, this is)
Stereo has different sound coming from the speakers. In other words, what the left speaker is playing may not the same the right speaker might be playing. If you've ever looked in the direction of a sound coming from your headphones, that's stereo at work.
/crappy explaination
It's named Luma because you're the one who uses it and so we named it after your girlfriend.
