Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Snowy Daylight:
Here's that promised freeroam.
I split my 12 cars into sets of 6. G-Trax made both of these so there shouldn't be an issue with coupling.
Also note it's the middle of winter.
I did position helpers at Colfax and Truckee.
Coupled to the first set.
Now I'm going to pull forward into the refueling area here at Roseville and see if I can top off my tanks.
My speed keeps fluttering while I'm setting still and I think that might be preventing me from taking on water. I do have 17,998 gallons left, and the tender holds 18,300something . I'll try the coal.
I was able to top that off
Now I'll back onto my coaches and then make the descision to get a helper or not.
One cool thing about Donner Pass's freight locomotives, in the winter they become covered in snow.
Also I'll pass on a helper for now.
Finally exiting the yard.
*starts listening to more Fairy Tale OST*
Coming up on Rocklin Station.
And a 50 mph speed limit
12:36
This is a station?
12:39
Let's get out of here.
12:41
Nice bridge, but where did the other mainline go?
And so the ascent begins with a 1.5% grade. While my injectors are off, I can climb this with ease.
Also the other mainline went under the bridge and winds its way around the mountain.
Entering tunnel 15, then 16.
If I had TSX enabled, I think there would a be snow dust cloud around me. Oh well.
This is Newcastle. Up ahead is Tunnel 18.
The speed limit dropped to 30....
13:00
This is the Auburn Highway viaduct.
Again driving through the snowy mountains is made epic with Epic Soundtrack
I've passed through so many tunnels.....
13:23
This isn't that hard of a climb, or at least not yet.
We're getting close to Colfax, where I'll take on more water. I'm down to 13,870 gallons of water and 27.1 tons of coal.
13:28
we just pasted the enterance to Colfax's yard. I'm going to back up and enter.
So I'm going to have to uncouple from my train first.
I'll leave them here.
I think they are both incorrectly positioned.
*tries to remedy this*
Fixed it. Only now I have to start my trip all over again. I'll take the other track to Colfax.
The 4449 has enough water for 2 trips over Cajon Pass, which is equilvent of one trip over Donner Pass.
HOW DID I NOT COUPLE?
WTF
This is where the tracks split.
I'm getting quite a few lag spikes every so often.
And so the climb begins.
12:31
I find something new each time I drive her. This black thing right here is the throttle linkage. Also the speed limit dropped to 30 mph on me.
That was a long and steep climb.... I think that was the original track.
12:55
It's stuff like this that really slowed down the construction of the western side of the Transcontional Railroad.
After a long, slow, and twisty ascent, we've made it to Colfax.
This car right here is where most of the money on passenger trains were made. Most passenger trains were not successful without mail contracts. The fast way to carry mail back then was via rail.
*derails while backing into the station*
Dammit
Something I didn't mention during the LP but I discovered during route editing, Roseville leads to Portland. The City of Portland owns the 4449 and that's where she's kept and most likely where she'll be overhauled over the next few years/decade. Her boiler cerficiate expired in June (this effectively prevents her from moving under her own power). After all the money poured into the new building Union Pacific pracitically forced them to build, there's not much left for the worked needed to get the 4449 cerficiated. Her driver is also isn't getting any younger and it won't be too long before he has to step down because he just can't do the job anymore. Does that mean she won't return? Most likely not, the 4449 is a very well known and famous locomotive with fans all over the world. The only issue is if all of those fans can send the money.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- First Helpers:
Disappointantly, all of my Donner Pass scenarios are as helpers.
Also
WHY THE HELL AM I STUCK IN THIS LITTLE PIECE OF CRAP.
*attempts to couple, only to get a message in the corner*
"Derailed click here to exit or use the main menu below"
Also my laggy framerate came back when I coupled to this train.
*switches to the lead locomotives*
That's much better.
Let's get out of the yard.
And we're out of the yard. Also, I don't like that sky.....
There's that weird voice again.
Something about no defects on track one?
Having no issues on the 2.4% grade.
This is the SD-40T. The T means "Tunnel Motor". This locomotives are designed to be used in areas with a lot of tunnels. Exhaust is normally blown out from the top of most locomotives. In a tunnel, this can affect the cooling ability of the radiators on the trailing units, forcing them to shut down as the engines overheat. This locomotive avoids that with that grilled section. I believe it's the air intake.
Made it Gold Run. Emigrant Gap is in 17.64 miles.
12:36
Watch my framerate drop. Oh wait, you guys can't.
12:54
There is nothing like standing on the front end of a locomotive at speed.
Clearly this is a huge train, just the way America likes it.
Finally here at Emigrant Gap.
Tunnel 4 is next in 9.13 miles
13:22
Tunnel 3
13:46 Tunnel 4 in 0.5 miles.
Norden West Track 1 is the next check point in 10.15 miles.
This is Norden
How the hell do I do this?
Flashing amber.
*didn't get the final image in time*
"We're just outside Tunnel 41. Thanks for your help guys. We'll take it from here."
This is supposedly a two part mission thingy. We'll see if it is.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- A big disappointment:
....are you fucking kidding me? This is the exact same scenario I just did, only now it's in bad weather.
*checks the train I'm supposed to help*
IT'S THE EXACT SAME CONSIST!
fuck this.
*checks the other scenario*
This looks a little better.
My framerate is so high.
Alright, let's go get them.
Wait, reverse? Oh, I have to go the other way.
Look at that professional overshoot.
Goodbye wonderful framerate....
Okay, now we're going to Emigrant Gap Track 1. 3.95 miles away.
14:28 21.87 miles to Tunnel 6
[img]
Awfully bright out for night time. I probably would need shadowing and TSX on.
14:36
Post Play Comment: I'm a fucking dumbass.
*begins to decide what I'll get next*
14:59 Tunnel 6 in 10.47 miles
After resuming the scenario, I noticed my brakes were at 60%, my reverser in neutral, and my throttle in Notch 3. While the throttle setting was right, I don't remember applying the brakes last night. And now I'm rolling downhill
*applys the brakes and stops*
*applies full power and releases the brakes*
AND I'M GOING DOWN AGAIN!!!!!!
I have found the problem, I am in control of my second unit, which is running backwards. So while I think I'm going to go forwards, I'm actually going backwards. So my reverser is going to be in reverse for the rest of the trip.
Oh look, Norden
15:26, 1.87 miles to go.
Into the tunnel!
Truckee is in 14.93 miles and the time is 15:31
And so the descent begins.
15:33
Truckee is in 2.96 miles
16:05
1.64 miles
That signal is amber and says we're changing tracks.
16:09
I'm hungry.
16:12
"Colfax Snapper, this is Train 19. Great job getting us down here, we owe you a beer. See you down in Blue Coyote down on Palisades"
But I'm underaged
That aside, This is one of the better scenarios for Donner Pass.
*returns to the scenario list and notices that I failed the scenario*
what the fuck

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Time Traveling Mother Fucker:
#4014's restoration is expected to take 3-5 years, but with the magic of scenario creation, we don't have to wait.
I decided to use the Challenger's passenger cars, which are supposedly heavier.
16 of these should make for a good haul.
:fuuu:
Also my water level is falling.
*whisles in a manner that totally does not suggest I edited the scenario several times*
We're going to go via track 3 to Laramie.
Having absolutely no issues with the 0.8% grade.
I've used close to 3,000 gallons of water so far, but I still have plenty left.
And now we go solo.
I'm quite pleased with my framerate so far.
Lynch, 12:53
Please ignore the fact my coaches are empty.
My boiler pressure has changed from 280 psi
I forgot that track 3 merges with Tracks 1 & 2 at Hermosa.
We made through the tunnel one more time.
Bye-bye!
13:26
*goes to the website*
Hey, a new route has been released. It's in Germany, but I'm not interested in German routes.
65 mph and I don't like all the shaking.....
13:38
My injectors are stuck on....
Also
We're at Laramie.
13:42
Welcome to Laramie. I'm going to stop the gameplay for right now and go to bed.
Now I have to get over to the wye by backing all the way up onto Main 3.
We're now in the Wye.
Now we can back up
Also I got paid today so I'll be downloading some more DLC. I just have to decide which.
Apart from Wyes, there weren't many places to turn a Big Boy during the days of steam. Cheyenne's turntable was barely big enough for the job. Laramie did have a turntable big enough, but it no longer exists.
Now we can head back to Cheyenne.
Back on my favorite line on Sherman Hill.
Maybe my boiler pressure isn't glitched, maybe I'm just not running a Big Boy as hard as they were run in service.
I'm losing speed on this 1.6% grade.
Already at Hermosa? Boy I am hauling ass.
Back to Main 3
14:55
15:00
I've used nearly 12,000 gallons of water so far.
15:25
15:37
I'm going to pass on the water because I'm not going to continue this free roam past Cheyenne Depot.
Just outside Cheyenne.
I've selected $70 of DLC.
There's my truck! I was trying to remember where I parked it.
That was my fastest run real time wise. I covered 145.36 miles in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 54 seconds. I used over 12,000 gallons of water and 5 tons of coal.
Now I'm going to download my selected DLC. However it'll be some time before you guys see them

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Return to the mountain of disappointment:
This is the last freight scenario included with Donner Pass. We have to run almost light over the summit to check the line. We're also being timetabled. We have to get to Tunnel 41 West, 11 miles up the line, in 30 minutes.
It's 9:00:04 now.
OH COOL
Redeeming quality right there for these locomotives.
Excuse me!
Running light like this, it's extremely easy to exceed the speed limit of 30 mph.
I'm not fond of having to change between Notch 1 and Notch 2 every 2 seconds.
9:08 7.4 miles
This is my first time going through the big hole.
9:24
And that unrealistically continues inside the tunnel.
Norden Turntable East is in 2.93 miles and I'm due at 9:40.
8 minutes early.
Emigrant Gap Loop is next in 20.57 miles. I'm due in an hour.
I've been using my airbrakes so far, but I'm tired of them so I'm using my dynamic brakes.
Textbook example of a snow shed at work.
2.02 miles to the Balloon Track. Due at 10:43, it is 10:21
That's 26.02 miles away.
The other track isn't rendering.
11:03 9.72 miles
More Rendering fail.
11:17 3.01 miles
I get the following message when I pass through these things.
"Southern Pacific Detector Track 2, No Defects. Southern Pacific Dectector Track 2, No Defects. Detector out."
"Truckee Depot, this is Inspection X2, you'll be pleased to know, we made it to Colfax. The pass is clear, so keep em coming!"

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Why I got this hellhole of a mountain:
Finally I get to move onto the Cab Forward missions.
This is a rare switch, with 3 paths instead of 2
...........the moutain of disappoint continues to grow.
I love how the cars actually move back and forth.
It seems that the CF scenarios are all part of one big scenario. I'll combine them all into one part then.
Interesting, we're appearently not stopping at North 2, even though the first scenario ends there.
Though that doesn't stop the ebrakes from tripping when we reach it.
Wait just one fucking minute, my name isn't Joe. WHERE ARE YOU LITTLE BASTARD SO I CAN BEAT YOU UP
Well don't that say death to all squrriels.
That right there makes things more legit.
Notice the stars on the drivers? Remember how the 4449 has them? They have a meaning.
*insert post LP rage over the screenshot being ruined by a bush here*
Pity the road traffic can't be as period accurate. Or the rest of the route for that matter.
Unlike the air compressors on other locomotives, these exhaust directly into the atomsphere, giving this locomotive a unique wheezing sound.
Also note the so called "Monkey Deck" Believed by many hobos to be a great place to ride. Only the locomotive would often kill hobos with her exhaust, assuming the noise didn't get to them first.
Hmm.... maybe this has something to do with my render distance, which I lowered prior to my last trip over the summit. I'll increase it after this scenario bit.
I'm stalling out on the 2.4% grade.
We aren't stalling now
There's the second downhill train today.
Holy crap my fire mass is just 38%
Another stall, and this time I'm rolling backwards...
NONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONOPLEASE
*gives up and let's the train roll back to the last flat spot*
I found the e brake.
Alright, let's give it another shot.
*gets run over by another train*
Attempt #3....
Not going well....
*rage quit*
3.07 miles to go....
I'm running with full throttle and full reverser, plus the blower and the sand.
3.1% grade
1.4 miles
Why do I have to stop? It's not red.
Grammer Nazis are going to rape you.
This train is massive, likely double the size of mine and I've been struggling this entire time.
I'm guessing I have to help you guys in the next scenario.
Or not.
Into the tunnel, very slowly.
I never knew that my windows can be opened. In addintion to the side windows, my front windows can slid to the side and the top bit also swings out.
Appearently losing control of my train means I lose my HUD and the use of my keyboard.
*gets back in my cab*
This is getting annoying.
And I'm losing boiler pressure.
OMA, my windows actually reflect on their position outside as well
Those open too?!
The oil caused my controls to glitch, holding down my left arrow key, which pans the camera left in this view.
4.93 miles until Truckee.
Interesting.....
This is Truckee and I think the fruit is still all in one piece, so that's a victory.
I'm really surprised that my running gear is still in snych.
The wait for help was horrible, I've never seen Miku so lustful before...
*puts away the still smoking shotgun in the hammerspace of my Shihakusho*
Eh? My snowplow.... Does that mean....
*puts her in motion*
also it's just past 20:00
It's misplaced for my tastes, but there!
I'm pentialized for speeding by losing control....
well, that tells you what time period it is....
What's he doing there?
It's times like these that I prefer deisel over steam.
Based on the sheer amount of little details like the throttle moving while viewing the outside of the locomotive makes this locomotive one of the best I have.
Once again the number of diesel trains tells me that this locomotive's days are numbered. Only one Cab Forward has been preserved, 4294
and while I was typing this out, I failed the scenario for going too fast....
Or did I?
*restarts the scenario to be on the safe side*
*sees the menu, which looks like it would in the early 2000s*
Did they redo the interface while I was playing?
I didn't notice it before, but that train is actually being pushed, not sitting still.
It's finally over. This is a very hard scenario.
There's just one more scenario left.
Alright.
....why is there a helper here?
*does some research*
Okay, the last revenue service run was in 1956 with #4211 running from Oakland to Davis, and then to Roseville with only a caboose, however the last run ever was in 1957, with #4274 hauling a special passenger service from Sacramento to Sparks and back.
This run doesn't look very historically accurate.
Say goodbye to Sparks and hello to lower framerate.
10.53 miles until this is over.
Last set of railfans.
To be honest, I didn't like this scenario very much, if only because I highly doubt it's histortical accuracy.
New DLC appears in the next part.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Welcome to Amtrak:
I was not expecting this.
Where did he say the lights were again?!
Also my throttle positions are clearly marked.
Oh. Well, moving on!
What is the gauge with the white needle?
Hard hitting for the win!
What red signal?
Those two things above the numbers are lights that flash one at a time while using my bell.
Oh shit, I just noticed I'm timetabled. Also WHY IS A TANK FLOATING IN MID AIR
I am now officially late in typicial Amtrak style. I've still got 2 and a half miles to go.
That's a lot of power.
Let your dirty mind go wild.
Everybody loves me!
*is shot by somebody and then molested by Miku*
I don't have much time, only a few minutes
*epic nailbiting*
And I'm late, still 2.22 miles away.
7 minutes late.
And I failed the scenario because of it.
*looks at the targets complete*
"Picked Up Passengers at 0 out of 3 Platforms"
....
Fuck this.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- Moar Amtrak Failure:
For those of you how didn't get the joke, Amtrak has a rather poor on-time track record.
And now there's another broken down. It's 23:00 Usually a freight locomotive would do this.
These locomotives are more than capable of 100 mph and are very hard to hold back on the slopes of Donner Pass.
That moment when you realize you've been going the wrong way.....
Passing through Truckee.
3 miles till the train
23:25
Almost at the train.
Pretty good sized passenger train.
6 miles till Truckee. 23:40
Almost finished, just .5 miles till the station
And finished~
.....
HOW IS THE SCENARIO INCOMPLETE!!!!
oh, I didn't stop at some place.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- How to lose your job at Amtrak:
Already doing so
I've got 8 minutes to get to Reno.
I've got 5 horns and 6 minutes
There's something I haven't seen before
[img]
On time, barely.
50 minutes! and over 33 miles....
Reno is one of those places where trains divide the town down the middle.
I'm still trying to figure out my throttle settings. I'm in Notch 6 right now
So the real thing has cruise control. Pity I do not.
I've discovered I can make that center red light flash and manually turn on those white flashing lights
New bridge.
This section is beautiful, when it renders properly.
So far none of the AI freight trains I've seen so far are actually moving.
This is going to suck if there's a frozen AI in front of me.
More bridges!
10.63 miles from Truckee and my ETA is 7:00, a minute late.
The time is 6:44
Ooo, this train is moving.
Also a nice close up of the Phase II paintscheme, Phase III is what's on the locomotives.
6:47
10 minutes to cover 7.15 miles
A convey!
3 minutes.....
Half a mile to go and it's 6:59
Amtrak doesn't just leave equipment lying around like that.
I'm late....
And I failed the scenario because of it.
And again I'm timetabled.
More units.
It appears to be raining, but there's nothing on my windshield.
I'm not heavy enough to use my brakes. Instead I have to run notch 1.
Helpers!
30 more minutes and 20.6 miles.
14 more minutes.
Shit, I hit Z, which shuts down the engine.
This is Reno. It's 16:48
If it weren't for all the road crossings, I could go much faster than 20 mph.
I highly doubt this
I am two minutes early.
*is fired by Amtrak for completing the scenario successfully*
So much for that job.....

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- I got hired by a famous railroad:
So after being fired by Amtrak, I traveled back in time to when the Pennsylvania Railroad was in its prime.
Unfortanutely I have to work my way from the ground up.
Altoona is very impressive. It even has it's own coal loader and water tower.
I'm going to try out the turntable.
I don't think it'll fit a Challenger or a Big Boy, but it's still a pretty big one.
Wheels for steam locomotives.
I've made through 180 degrees.
Now that I've tested the turntable it's time to go do my job, which is to pick up some scrap metal from outside the shops.
So I not only had to couple, but also stop.
So now I have to go find Ted.
Clearly this is a very huge yard.
Refueling area.
I haven't seen a red arrow on my HUD before.
Did I unlock the next scenario?
Yes I did.
*fast forward several months*
It's almost the end of my shift and I just a little mor-
HOLY SHIT THAT BUILDING IS ON FIRE AND THAT TRAIN HAS TO BE MOVED!
THE SQURRIELS DO NOT MATTER
I think the distance glitched....
anyway...
*uncouples*
So um, when is the fire department getting here?
Time to back up....
or rather go forwards
I think I'm almost done.
Apparently cars don't couple if you hit them very hard.
And after dropping them off, they have put the fire out.

Re: Railworks 4: End of the Line
- On the fast track:
So after my preformance during the fire, I've been promoted from yard boy
To this lag fest of a mainline train. The lag is due to the huge length of the train, which is normal size for American Railroading. I'm going to try altering my settings a little bit.
Still laggy.....
I'm going to gamble and edit this scenario. If I do it wrong, then I will screw up the other scenarios by permanently locking them, which would suck.
It crashed on me.
*some time later*
After shedding quiet a few cars and a helper, I tried the scenario, only one of my locomotives glitched into the cars, causing a derailment the second the scenario is started.
But it's fixed now.
Where?
In case I forgot to tell you guys, this is the Horseshoe Curve route, part of the now long gone Pennsylvania Railroad. Of all the routes, this one has a lot of related DLC.
Of that DLC, I've gotten 1 out of 3 I'd like to get. There's at least 2 others, both of them switchers.
The confusion.....
Oh, here's the speed limit.
If you say so.
These diesels, although currently being used for freight work, are also very well capiable of passenger work. This first unit is refered to as an A unit because of the cab. The next unit is called a B unit and it doesn't have a cab. The trailing unit is also an A unit.
B units are very rare these days, mostly because they're useless without an A unit to control them. Almost all diesels used these days have cabs, allowing them to be more flexiable in their use.
The style of this design has also fallen out of use because it forces the driver to stick his head out the window to look behind him while shunting. Hood units, such as our helpers are now used. Only passenger trains will use units like this because they look nicer.
We're approaching a speed restriction of 30 mph, down from the 35 mph we've been going.
Those are all say clear.
Also running Notch 8 because the speed limit is 50 mph. And I'm doing 42 at the moment and accelerating.
It's now 8:52 and I have to see if I have any work today. I'm not expecting much.
I got my normal workload and then some. Also there's a water tower.
11:25
Is now the time to brag that my train is less than half the length of the failed train?
And as it turns out, there's a water tower here too. In fact it's all part of one huge siding.
Now on track two.
I wonder how much I would be struggling if I had my full sized train.
11:32
That's at caution.
5.86 miles till my run is over.
This is Creeson
The first of a series of signals.
I AM SERIOUSLY IN DANGER OF DERAILING RIGHT NOW
Phew!
*returns to the head end*
A tunnel! No wonder 4 tracks became 2.
The scenario is complete after 38 minutes and 25.95 miles.
*several months later*
We're a helper today and we're going to be helping Ted.
Just to let him know I'm here, I bumped him hard.
We're moving
8:15
Where is Ted?
Ted is MIA so I have to toot his own horn.
YOU'RE NOT EVEN ON THE GODDAMN TRAIN.

On the bright side, this is the Horseshoe curve.
In game, it's been almost 100 years since it was built. As I'm too lazy to go look up which year that was, I can only give you a ball park estimate of what year it is, around 1960 or 1950.
We have to stop at that signal gantry.
I don't see an ambulance....
I believe labor unions can file a lawsuit over something like this. Labor Unions have tremedous political power, particulatry ones for important jobs like airline pilots and locomotive operators.
Still no exhaust.
I'm ready to go now.
Supposedly this is a shade of black, not green.
The Allegheny Tunnels.
Ventilation Systems? There's something you don't normally see that often, but given how the route is diesielized, but still able to accomoate steam locomotives, this looks like something left over like the water towers.
We're almost at our final destintation and I'm doing twice the legal speed limit.
There's a wye and a diesel tank, but no water.
I just realized I could stop faster if I took her out of Notch 1.
Finished for now.

- Promotion:
It's August now and a heat wave has been tearing up the country. I meanwhile have been promoted to passenger duty.
Am I timetabled?
Nope
Also that guard actually blew his whistle.
I was exicted for the fact I could now do 70 mph, only a 40 mph appeared on my HUD
Textures are pretty crappy.....
I'm quite a ways out of the yard, and I'm having to slow down some more.
Got a passenger stop in 13 and a half miles.
I can also now go 45 mph.
14:18
A straight bit! 60 here I come!
14:19 12.33 miles
10 miles
This is Cresson.
14:35
awww
And so the descent begins.
6.24 miles to go.
The PRR often went to great lengths to ensure passengers got a good view of the curve.
Arriving in Altoona.
And finished.
5:09
And I've been selected to particpiate in the upcoming celebrations!
*some time later*

- Scenario Writer wrote:After an incredible year on the PRR you have become one of the most respected engineers. You have been selected to drive a passenger train on a night run around Horseshoe Curve for a special portrait. Four trains are scheduled to meet on the curve at which point a light show will commence. This portrait will be a huge publicity for the railroad and six weeks of preparation have gone into getting the right shot.
This is supposed to take 25 minutes and is the last of the scenarios that came with the Curve.
And it's timetabled.
Come on people.
Why are there box cars on here?!
I've got little more than 3 minutes to get to Mile Post 238
I've got-
WHAT HAPPENED! THE RPMS DROPPED TO ZERO
HELL YES THERE'S A PROBLEM!
But I made it to the milepost early.
Early again. They must not have been expecting me to diagioze and fix the problem so quickly. And all that means is that I hit Z.
I'm here already! And 3 minutes early.....
I doubt the timing was great.
But I'm off the clock now.
So did I pass or fail?
I passed.

He has two episodes, one is the 2012 version and the other is 2013
It's only complicated while driving a steam locomotive.
Driving a diesel or electric is quite easy. Just think them like a car, with the throttle being the gas pedal and the reverser being your automatic transmission's gear shift.
Steam locomotives are more like manual transmissions. The easiest way to drive one is to pick a throttle position, set the reverser to full and when the boiler pressure turns red (don't mistake it for your safety valve opening) move the reverser down a little bit until the pressure turns green again. Every once an a while you should move the reverser back up a bit to see if you can operate with a higher setting. But also keep in mind that if the setting is too high, your speed will be limited.
